Very well researched leveraging interviews with people who knew Amelia Earhart. The book unfortunately drags and turns what should be an inspiring story about a dynamic and fascinating woman into a dry report of her life that shies away from even attempting to break through the surface of who she was.
A really terrific work. I can't say how much I learned from and enjoyed this audio. The only thing that kept it from being 5 stars was a certain bit of repetitiveness. (OK, OK, Amelia had "level grey eyes", UNCLE!) Part of it was due to the structure of the book. Butler followed themes, sometimes from start to finish, so certain bits were repeated, and at times, the chronology was hard to figure out since it went back and forth a lot. But overall, you really should read (or listen, Anna show more Fields is a great narrator, something like a cross between Kate Hepburn and Kate Mulgrew)this book, even if you THINK you know Amelia Earhart. She was so much more than I think she has ever been given credit for, and Butler really brings that out. First rate. show less
Three biographical essays that gave both different facets and different slants. Turns out Earhart was a fascinating woman. The photo section illustrates clearly how hard she worked to maintain her celebrity status so that she could continue to raise money to fly. Recommended to fans of history, feminism, and photojournalism.
A detailed and revealing biography of "AE" featuring newly uncovered primary sources. Earhart's active feminist drive, private life, familial connection to Gore Vidal, and direct line to FDR are explored. Of course, the mysterious disappearance gets examined with the conclusion is a crash at sea and complete sinking with a recap of research done to discount tales of capture by Japanese forces.
A bonus is having Anna Fields as the excellent narrator of this audiobook.
