Tertullian
Author of Early Latin Theology : Selections from Tertullian, Cyprian, Ambrose, and Jerome
About the Author
Tertullian, a convert to Christianity, lived and wrote in the North African city of Carthage. Although he never held a clerical post, his influence on Christianity, especially in the West, was enormous. His writings include apologetic, theological, controversial, and ascetic works. He never shied show more away from discoursing against those he believed to be expounding against the "rule of faith." He is the first major Christian author to write in Latin and to provide Latin terminology for trinitarian theology. Tertullian's theological interests centered around his concern for the purity and holiness of the church. The importance of these issues eventually led Tertullian to join the Montanist sect, which emphasized the immediacy of the spirit, ecstatic prophecy, and a moral strictness. Tertullian, one of the most discussed Fathers of Christian theology, has a clear, angry, brilliant, aggressive style. I love his "fighting" logic and his fascinating thought
This classic written during the second century consist of treatises that contains proofs to the Jews that the Messiah expected by the Prophets can be no one else but Jesus Christ. The writing is brilliant and the translation well done. This is a must read for Christian and Jew and recommended read for everyone.
Tertullianus was a critical lawyer and scholar but that's what it took to steer emperors and scholars to the truth of the gospel.
Contains: De praescriptione haereticorum -- Adversus Hermogenem -- Adversus Valentinianos -- De carne Christi -- De resurrectione carnis -- Adversus Praxean -- De anima
