A very detailed examination of the Nazi purge of 1934, done in a narrative style. Somehow both mind numbingly boring and impossible to put down. My only real criticism is it's relative lack of detail on the background of the ideological dispute within fascism that precipitated the crisis. Otherwise an excellent and compelling read.
[La baie des anges] by [[Max Gallo]], a multi-generational family saga of 3 brothers, who have recently become orphans who move from Piedmont in Italy over the mountains to Nice on the Mediterranean coast late in the 19th century. The oldest one, Carlo, 28 years old, has ruthless ambition, and uses devious means to fund the start-up of a construction empire. The middle brother, Vincente, 18 years old, sticks to his proletarian roots and becomes a coach driver and later chauffeur at the home show more of the rich people, the Merani family, who take in the two youngest brothers as hitchhikers in the arduous trek over the mountains. The youngest brother, Luigi, 8 years old, becomes a singer and a surrogate baby/child to the Merani family. He eventually becomes the manager of a brother/tavern. Carlo's two children don't seem to struggle too much with their destiny as upper class, but the two sons of Vincente and Denise, Dante and Antoine, espouse ideals of socialism and/or communism, and sacrifice ambitions and family safety to fight against the ingrained fascism in France. The two daughters of Vincente and Denise, Louise and Violette, fall in love with men who either die in conflicts such as World War I and the Spanish Civil War, or who are regularly thrown in prison by crypto-fascist governments.
I kept wanting to say to all the characters during all their travails from the World War I through to the retribution of the Collaborators during the Petain regime, and into the debacles of Indo-China and Algeria, "hold on, socialism is coming, just wait until the 60s and 70s, but that outcome is left mostly to one's imagination, because the book ends without giving such a denouement. I checked on Amazon and Abebooks and found no English translation. May be available in French only. My french is too poor to try to write a review in that language.

A hopeless novel/biography stuffed full of French glory, destiny, panache, style and ignoring Napoleon as a source of trouble for the rest of Europe. When will the French start to take a rational look at this person?
