Bibliography of New World Utopias by Paul Kagan
- Description
- Bibliography of New World Utopias: A Photographic History of the Search for Community by Paul Kagan (0140039031) "Much of the important written and pictorial bibliographic material not listed here is located in the Utopian Studies Collection stored at the California Historical Society. This is an archive collected by the author. The collection is an ongoing attempt to acquire and preserve materials from historical and contemporary communes. The archive includes thousands of previously unavailable photographs, pamphlets, documents, publications, and transcribed oral histories of survivors of communal groups. Persons interested in this unique utopian collection may contact the author through the California Historical Society Library, San Francisco. This bibliography includes works that were read, used, or found interesting in the preparation of the present book. More thorough and exhaustive bibliographies can be found in Robert V. Hine's indispensible work, California's Utopian Colonies (San Marino, Calif.: Huntington Library, 1953); Rosabeth Kanter's Commitment and Community (Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard University Press, 1972); and Robert S. Fogarty's bibliographical article, "Communal History in America," in Choice, Vol. X, No. 4 (June, 1973). Since some of the following books contain material that is relevant to several different chapters, the division of sources by chapter should not be taken as more than a general indication."
