For those that don't know me I am Chelle from Ontario, Canada. Late 30's, wife, mother of two and a police dispatcher. Hubby is an officer and between our two shift work schedules we share in all duties of house and children. I read at work when it is slow and after our daughters are in bed or relaxing.
My reading ebbs and flows pretty badly at times. Some years I have read as low as 36 books and in 2018 I hit 140. We shall see what 2019 brings!

Starting 2019 I am setting a few goals for myself and hoping to keep them going through the whole year, and not just January!
I had great fun in 2018 with the Pop Sugar Challenge and will be doing that again this year!
As well I would like to try and up my audiobook game and am setting a goal of two audiobooks per month.

ROOT
I'm trying something new this year and I've joined the ROOT group.
I am going to attempt to reduce my unread books by almost half (not including audio or ebooks) and my goal is 30. (I think there are about 75 up there). I won't do anything silly like pretend I can make myself stop buying (as if) but to count towards this I had to own the book prior to December 2018.

Here is the link to my ROOT thread
1) The Friday Night Knitting Club by Kate Jacobs (owned since 2018)
2) A Red Herring Without Mustard by Alan Bradley (owned since 2011)
3) I am Half-Sick of Shadows by Alan Bradley (owned since 2011)
4) Aunt Dimity and the Deep Blue Sea by Nancy Atherton (owned since 2016)
5) The Queen of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner (owned since May 2018)
6) The King of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner (owned since May 2018)
7) Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng (owned since April 2018)
8) An American Marriage by Tayari Jones (owned since 2018)
9) Seven for a Secret by Lyndsay Faye (owned since 2017)
10) The Fatal Flame by Lyndsay Faye
11) I Found You by Lisa Jewell

Happy Monday, folks!
It's a chilly day here and I'm sleepy. I may head off for a nap this morning after I make Nate's birthday cupcakes for him to take to work. He has to work nightshift tonight but we will celebrate with him a bit after Chloe gets home from school.
Yesterday before work I stopped off a Chapters to browse and grab a Starbuck Vanilla Latte. I left with $75 less in my pockets but a smile on my face. I am taking a chance on three books that I normally would not have bought, but two were on sale and one I keep seeing here on LT and it has the most gorgeous cover! I also bought a fun mug to keep at work for my coffee.

Morning, folks
Hump day is being unkind to me today. Despite getting over 8 hours sleep I have woken up groggy with a headache. Ellie is being a good girl today and letting me drink my coffee in peace while she watches a bit of tv and has a mid morning snack.

I am half way through Thick as Thieves and I'm bored. It's not the best of the series. I've put it down for now and started Sourcery by Terry Pratchett. I'll go back to the other one on the weekend when I work.

Happy Friday, folks!
I'm at work for another full weekend of shifts, boo hiss! Although I am not too sad to be here as Chloe has decided that her imagination is best used to spend each day pretending to be a dog, barks and panting and all. Sooooo it's quieter here at work :) Today is Green day at Chloe's school since they are on March Break for St Patrick's day. I am hoping that Nate sends me a picture of her all dressed up today and if he does I'll share it here :)

I am planning on finishing Thick as Thieves this weekend, hopefully today. I've also brought three to chose from for the rest of the weekend.
Speaking Among the Bones, American Marriage & Chronicles of the One: Year One.

Have a great weekend!

I just finished listening to Wonder Woman: Warbringer by Leigh Bardugo and really enjoyed it. It was a good book to listen to while driving through the thunderstorms in Nashville last night. I am going to listen to more books in this series as I wonder if this was just a one-off or if it is indicative of the quality of the others in the series. I am on spring break and headed back to Kansas so will get to listen to several other books on the trip.

Morning, folks!
Today is March Break for Chloe's school so I'm home with both girls today. I'm a little tuckered from my weekend of nightshifts so I don't think we will venture far from home today. I have some kitchen cleanup and meal prep to do today but I may take the girls out for a healthy lunch at McDonald's :-p Our local library is doing a bunch of cool stuff as well so we may head there this afternoon. We will play it by ear.

>56 Berly: HI Kim! I find that when I am too tired during my commutes I just can't bring myself to listen to my audiobooks. I have been cranking my 90's playlist and Nate accidentally left his Queen CD in my truck so I blasted that a couple days :)

I wasn't sure, originally, if I was going to be able to read it as it had two strikes against it in the first few pages. I found it very annoying that the pages were rough cut and uneven and the first few pages were full of clichés. I put it down for a few days and picked it up as an ebook instead and that made quite a difference. I was at 16% after putting the kids to bed and ended up staying up until 1am to finish it! It's not often anymore that I will risk being exhausted when the kids wake me up!

>60 ChelleBearss: Cliches really bother me too. So do obvious attempts to avoid cliches. Good writing flows with grace without you having to stop and say "oops, cliche" or "oops, putting in the cliche would have been better." (I'm specifically thinking of a book by Stephen King where he decided to write "his legs felt like a bunch of pencil erasers," instead of "his legs felt like rubber." That sort of substituting other words to mean the same thing as a cliche falls flat on me.)

Happy Hump Day, folks!
I'm working day shift today and tomorrow and the wee beasties have gone to their grandparents for tonight. Since Nate is working night shift tonight I have a very exciting night of take-out dinner, a trip to the library and then drinking wine in the jet bath before early to bed!

I've started Seven for a Secret in my attempt to read books from my shelves this year. I am enjoying it and hope to get right to the next book right after, The Fatal Flame.

My dad asked me recently if I had any books on my shelves that I wouldn't mind parting with as my Grandmother is looking for new books to read. She lives in an old age home in New Brunswick and has no access to go to the library as she no longer drives. I've managed to get a small box of books, mostly James Patterson, from my shelves that I no longer want. I also have quite a few on my TBR shelf that I could part with once I read them. I'm going to try and read as many of them as I can between now and July, as my dad is travelling there in August. I've asked my coworkers if anyone has any old books that they would like to part with and I plan on hitting up our local thrift store for $1 books. I'm hoping that I can send a few boxes of books for my Grandma and her friends.

>61 Carmenere: I hope you end up enjoying it. Honestly I thought it was annoying for the first chapter or so but once I got into I really did enjoy it.

>62 RebaRelishesReading: I hope you enjoy it, Reba! Give it a couple chapters before you judge it though :)

>63 brenzi: Thanks, Bonnie! I am loving that everyone who has read it seems to have loved it! I only picked it up because of the author and the fact that it was on sale :)

>64 jnwelch: Thanks, Joe! Glad to hear you loved it as well! I'm going to read her other books first, the Timothy Wilde series.

>65 charl08: Thanks, Char! Next week is plaid day at her school. It's going to be the ugliest outfit ever as the only plaid she has it a red dress and grey pants. Ugh

>66 The_Hibernator: I think it just bothered me because it felt like there was a whole bunch in the first few pages. I don't have the book with me at work to give any examples though

Morning, folks! Today is my last day shift before having three days off and I am on the call taking side which means answering 911 and non-emergency calls. It's my least favourite part of my job as sometimes people can be very rude and ignorant. Most callers just want help and are nice enough but enough people are nasty enough that I'd rather just work the radio side dealing with the officers instead. Although some people are just odd enough to make me laugh as someone just called and asked me what the date and time was and then hung up. Odd, that.

My night alone last night was pretty great. I ordered Thai food from a place in my town that Nate has refused to try because it looked too sketchy. A friend said her husband loves it so I gave it a shot and it was amazing. I ordered Pad Thai and crispy spring rolls and read my book and drank some wine. Then I had a hot lavender jet bath before falling asleep at 9. It was glorious! And I even have half my meal to have for lunch today!

>68 katiekrug: Thanks, Katie it turned out pretty great

>69 Carmenere: Hi Lynda, We are all surviving March break. Monday was hit or miss as Chloe had LOTS of energy and was testing my patience but it's been good since. I am trying to find some things to do outside our house for the weekend. Chloe has gymnastics Saturday morning and then we may head to a large zoo type event at the local fairgrounds. It's run by a popular animal rescue agency and they have a ton of animals on display and some the kids can bet. This year they have a bobcat that the rehabilitated and I have never seen one. We might also go to the butterfly conservatory in Cambridge as it's always a hit with the kids.

Happy Friday, Folks! Today is the first day of my three day weekend! Nate is sleeping from his nightshift so we will probably stay close to home today and perhaps do a pizza night. Tomorrow I think we will head to Little Ray's Reptile show after Chloe's gymnastics and Sunday I think we might head to the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory. This is all pending Nate's willingness to go in crowds of kids. So we shall see how willing her is or if he comes up with better ideas. There is also an indoor waterpark a couple hours away but I'm not sure I'm up to putting on a swim suit.

I'm still working on Seven for a Secret as I didn't read at work yesterday. In between doing my job I was searching the internet for a waterfront cottage to rent for two weeks in August. I found a couple great and affordable ones but they don't want dogs :( Jackson will travel with us so I need something that can accommodate him and doesn't have a thousand stairs to the water.

>72 katiekrug: I was shocked to see that this place was not only fast and delicious but offers delivery for FREE! Even our pizza place has a delivery charge. I know this is not going to be good for my waste line as I need to lose another 10lbs before I put on a swim suit in August

>73 RebaRelishesReading: Mmmm that sounds good! We have a little Thai place in the town that my in-laws used to live in and it offered a spicy thai fish with some sort of fruit sauce on it that was to die for! It's a 20 minute drive though so we can't do take-out and eating in with the girls has proven to be more disruptive than I choose to be.

>74 AMQS: Ohh time flies, eh! This August will be our 7 year anniversary! I am starting to feel a touch old lately with the kids, husband and grey hairs! LOL

I hope you like An American Marriage too! Remember to give it a few chapters before it gets good though

>76 scaifea: Thanks, Amber! I was going to try something new on the menu but I usually order either pad thai or chow mein. Chow mein can be a tricky one though as some restaurants use beansprouts and some use these delicious skinny noodles that I adore. I am too ignorant of different cuisines to know which uses which and sometimes I get tricked. I greatly dislike bean sprouts and the mix ups have turned me off the dish. I think one might be Chinese and one might be Cantonese but I'm not really sure.

>77 karenmarie: I've never tried Hot and Sour soup, Karen. I should give that a shot. I need to branch out and now that I've discovered this gem close to home maybe I'll try some new things.

>78 charl08: Sorry to heat your box lunch doesn't stand up to my Pad Thai. My work did a charity hot dog day but I had leftover Pad Thai and couldn't bring myself to eat a hot dog :)

We had a happy weekend here and I'm finally sitting down to catch my breath!
Yesterday we took the girls to see the Little Ray's zoo in London and they loved it. We even splurged for McDonald's after (ugh) for them and a bit of time on the play equipment there for Chloe.
Today we headed out of town to the Butterfly Conservatory in Cambridge. We had a blast and it was bug feast week and they had bugs to eat. We tried grasshopper, ants and crickets. I was surprised that Chloe was willing to eat the crickets and grasshoppers now problem but she drew the line at chocolate ants. I couldn't bring myself to eat the whole roasted cricket. Even Elissa ate the grasshopper but I really don't think she knew what it was lol.
Afterwards I had a busy day of meal prep, groceries and cooking for the work week ahead. Nate and I are back on our Maximized Living meal plan so it tastes a bit more effort on my part to get meals and healthy snacks prepped. Kids are now washed and in bed and I think I'm going to head off to a bath with my book soon.

Here are a few pics from this weekend. The rest can be found on my instagram or facebook.

I'm about ???? 125 pages into An American Marriage and it's very good. Rather a sad story though, at least so far. I was kind of bothered that Celestial and Roy kept such big secrets from each other until after they were married. I wanted to give them both a spanking for stupidity. Chloe is very brave to taste insects. Speaking of sketchy foods - which does not take much for me, as I am quite a picky eater we were over at my son and DIL on Friday. My SIL and her two teen aged kids are here from Barrie and they like what I consider sketchy foods. So the dinner menu was sushi, some sort of Chinese dumplings and some tempura veggies. Fortunately my son had prepared some fairly plain chicken breasts and I was able to partake of those. I ate a couple of dumplings and luckily I was at the other end of the table from my DIL and son.

We have so called " Rapid Reads " too - bestsellers that you can only check out for 7 days and luck of the draw if you find them on the shelves. I am back in Alabama and this last week at work has been so hectic that I had NO LT time. I did finish reading Sparrow Hill Road and I thought I would like this ghost story better than I did. I think it was about 75 -100 pages to long. It would have made a great novella, but as a novel it just went on to long.

The weather here is finally Spring and so tomorrow I am going to spend hours washing my car. After a week in Kansas on unpaved roads it is covered in mud from top to bottom. (Somebody in our parking deck at work wrote "wash me" on the passenger side door in the dried mud.) I don't really have time to wash it properly as I have my taxes to do this weekend as well, but I know if I hire it done it will take a lot of money. I got out my kitchen step ladder so that I could use the kitchen mop on the top and on the windows. It is amazing how muc brighter and clearer the pictures are on my front and rear cameras.

Tomorrow - the taxes!

Hi Chelle, we are both well and have been busy the last few days, Karen has taken the last of her holidays and so we went off to Grassington in the Yorkshire Dales to visit the Stripey Badger Bookshop and Café. Karen had a girly day with Amy yesterday and I was left to my own devices. The weather is picking up and I have some small jobs to get on with in the garden not least taking down the old wooden greenhouse, I need one of the large panes of glass for the window at the back of the garage to make sure the Robins don't nest again, I will put up a couple of nest boxes for them though.

Hope you, Nate, Chloe and Elissa are all well and that you are having a good weekend my dear, I will try and maintain my presence on LT and visiting your thread dear friend.

Morning folks. Just popping in quickly before my pre-work nap. We had a terrible weekend here as someone brought home the stomach flu and we all ended up with it. It was a very long weekend of cleaning up vomit and being sick myself. Saturday night saw me spend the night on the bathroom floor. Thankfully we are all on the mend now!

I'll pop in tonight during my shift and try to visit everyone. Just getting caught up on a weekend's worth of cleaning/dishes/groceries etc as not a single thing got done here this weekend. We really need to plan our sick days better and not have everyone sick on the same day! oy!

Hooray for The Shining Girls. I am a fan of that one too but did not care for Broken Monsters.

Yucky ol' stomach crud. Sorry for your misery, my dear lady, nothing is more wearing than a household of sick folks. I can breathe out of both nostrils, haven't hacked a lung up yet, and almost hear without greatly increased volume. Oh yay, I'm well.

Still not going outside. The temptation is great...50° and sunshiney...but the word "relapse" cycles through my brain as I put on socks, and everything stops for tea as the old song has it.

Hi, Chelle. I liked Zoo City a lot, and her Moxyland was pretty good. Now I need to take a look at Shining Girls.

Hi folks,

So I got behind again. I meant to catch up while at work on Monday night but one of our other communications centres had to go on fall back mode to us for tower maintenance, or something techy, so our comm centre had to take over for them. So 30 people had to do all of the calls for service for both comm centres covering all of West Region and Central region Ontario. So needless to say it was a touch busy on Monday and I wasn't feeling great still. After getting home from work at 3am and hoping to go right to sleep Elissa woke up ready to party and wouldn't go back to bed until after 5am. Chloe woke me up at 730 to start our day and get the kids to daycare and school. I finally got back to sleep from about 10am-2pm. I ended up having to call in sick lastnight as my tummy was still upset and I was just too exhausted to be able to work another nightshift.
Today I am still feeling worn out but the kids are at school and daycare and I'm just sitting here drinking coffee and listening to the quiet.
I have a few small errands to run today (GoodWill load and yard waste to drop off, coffee with friend) and I have some goodies to bake for our work bake sale for the moral committee that I am on. (Baking Slutty Brownies and possibly a banana bread)

Otherwise I plan to get caught up on LT and work away at picking out pictures for Elissa's Year One photo album (she is almost two, so yeah I'm a touch behind!)

In other news my Great Uncle has been awarded the Order of Canada! My father's Uncle George Goguen is an artist in New Brunswick and he has been recognized for his lifetime of art in the Maritimes. We are very proud!

>113 LovingLit: I realize now that I have aged a lot in the last few years. I used to love a visit to McDonalds (mmmm big mac!) but now it just makes me feel sick after eating it. The girls aren't even huge fans of it, really. I have the weirdest kids! What kid doesn't go nuts for some yummy nuggets or a cheeseburger?! Chloe's just likes the fries and the toy and Ellie is too young to care yet.

Life really has changed since our 20's eh! While I wouldn't change much (wouldn't mind them healthy more often lol) I would love to slow down the aging feeling. I feel about 80 this week!

>114 benitastrnad: Hope your taxes went well. I meant to drop ours off at the accountant last week but life got in the way. I should try and do that tomorrow. I think we are going to pay a lot and I'm probably going to cry when I see it. I think they didn't take enough tax off when Nate worked overtime.

>118 scaifea: Thanks, Amber. This was a rough one. I can't remember the last time I hugged a toilet when it was self induced (no wine consumed here recently!) The little boy that gave it to Elissa was back at daycare this morning and he was looking rough. I hope he is on the mend and isn't still contagious! Their poo family got it like 3 times. The mom looks ready to give up. Poor girl. They have three kids and the whole family had it and kept passing it around. Ugh

>119 msf59: Hiya Mark! I really enjoyed both and plan to get my hands on Zoo City at some point. I may try and pick it up used if I can find it somewhere cheap.
Chloe's class is making bird feeders this week. The teachers asked us to send in big pop bottles, egg cartons or milk cartons so they can turn them into bird feeders. Not sure which day they are doing it but Chloe is very excited to make them and hang them in the tree out front.

I am hoping the whole family stays healthy as they are going to fire me if I keep using this many sick days! (well probably not, but I feel bad about it)

>121 katiekrug: Thanks, Katie. It was a rough one and I'm still feeling the effects but slowly improving. Congrats on your new house purchase! :)

How exciting about your great uncle, Chelle. His works are gorgeous. Sorry to hear that you had to hug the toilet, Oh yuck. I'm glad to say I can't remember when I've last had to hug a toilet. I can still recall cleaning up after the kids though. Not fun. How did I have such a good stomach for cleaning up after my kids when they were in their teens. I can remember one especially huge vomit, brought on by my son eating at White Spot , I think . Ugh. We had met with friends for dinner and Wm was not the only person there that came away sick to his stomach overnight. * Shudders at the memory*.

Mar 27, 2019, 6:50 pm

>131 vancouverdeb: You don't happen to recall what you may have done in the past to get the vomit smell out of carpet and furniture. Chloe's first purge hit our recliner chair and the carpet before she could make it to the bathroom. I've tried a few things but can't get the smell to fully leave.

133vancouverdeb
Edited: Mar 27, 2019, 7:06 pm

Well, that last vomit I described hit the bathroom sink and yuck, but it was so thick I had to move it all to the toilet. I'm making myself sick thinking about it. We had a carpet cleaner that my inlaws gave us as a gift and I think for carpet and furniture, that is what we used. Dave became a master with the carpet cleaner and what ever solution came with it. I recall my inlaws so kindly saying to me - Deborah, two sons and a dog, you are going to need a carpet cleaner for home. So true!! Best of luck with your carpet and furniture. My best, Chelle.

>133 vancouverdeb: I have a mini carpet/furniture cleaner. It was my plan to try it out today to see if I could get rid of the vomit smell but I've had a hitch in my big plans as Chloe is home sick with diarrhea today. So much for us starting to get better

Morning, folks. We've entered round two of the stomach flu here with two kids with diarrhea and a mama with tummy pains. I'm just about ready to throw in the towel these days! This mama needs everyone to get healthy really fast!
Nate is off at training today so it's just us girls hanging out. My dad is coming to visit today to help fish a pair of sunglasses out of the toilet (don't ask) and then he is going to drop off my taxes at the tax man for me as I can't leave the house with two sick babes.

Yesterday I managed a quick visit to the thrift store in town that has $1 hardcovers and .50 paperbacks. I found three books for myself and 7 to send to Gramma in NB this summer.

Keeping:
Outrage by Arnaldur Indridason
The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks & Sarah Pekkanen
All Together Dead by Charlaine Harris

Sending:
Alone in the Classroom by Elizabeth Hay
A Most Wanted Man by John LeCarre
The Nightmare by Lars Kepler
The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield
Game of Thrones by George RR Martin
I Know This Much is True by Wally Lamb
Original Sin by PD James

Adding my sympathy, Chelle. Jeesh. Nate gone for training, too. I'm glad your Dad can help out a bit. When our kids were sick, we used to throw them in the backyard and tell them to be quiet. (No, we didn't!)

46) The Troop by Nick Cutter
75 Books Challenge
Pop Sugar Challenge:04 - A book you think should be turned into a movie

Stephen King says: "THE TROOP scared the hell out of me, and I couldn't put it down. This is old-school horror at its best. Not for the faint-hearted, but for the rest of us sick puppies, it's a perfect gift for a winter night."

This was one sick book. Don't get me wrong, I loved it, but it made me cringe in multiple spots. I even had to put it down when reading before bed as I didn't want those images in my dreams. This is a book for horror lovers but not for those that don't enjoy gore and terror.
