Happy (early) Halloween!

We've written 15 autumnal clues for you to solve. Read and solve each clue, and find the page on LibraryThing that matches your solution. When you find the right solution, you’ll see a banner at the top of your screen announcing that you’ve found a pumpkin.

Go here for the hunt!

You have just over one week—until Thursday, October 31st at 5pm EDT—to find as many pumpkins as you can.

Use this thread to brag, ask for and give hints, etc

As in past hunts, we'll be awarding profile badges to anyone who finds at least one pumpkin, upgrading accounts to lifetime memberships for anyone who finds at least five, and anyone who finds all 15 will be entered into a drawing for a LibraryThing or TinyCat t-shirt of their choice.

Important: When giving hints, please use the spoiler tag. To mark something as a spoiler, start your message like this:

<spoiler>

And end it like this:

</spoiler>

Troubleshooting

If you’re not seeing banners, or the hunt is otherwise not working for you, you may be using the old site design. Hunts don’t work on the old version of the site. You can switch to the new version by going here. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and look under "Design." You can always switch back after the treasure hunt, if you like.

Happy hunting!

P.S. Hats off to @conceptDawg for the adorable "Flaminghost" illustration! He's made many of our treasure hunt graphics in the last couple years. We get a kick out of them, and we hope you do, too!

Five found in five minutes. That's good enough a start. I may hunt a few more before going to sleep, but right now I have other places on the web to haunt.

#7 has me stumped ...

13/15 done yet 7 and 14 remain elusive

7: romance, vermont, witches, murder, knitting shop, supernatural, cop... no combination came up with the right book so far...

Edited: Oct 22, 2019, 11:10 am

>5 cwebb: A tagmash for vermont, witches found #7 easily for me.

If you don't know how to do a tagmash: search for the two words separated by a comma, click on Tags on the left side of the search results page, then click on "See a tagmash".

I haven't found #14 yet either.

Oct 22, 2019, 11:11 am

Oh, thanks that helped. I was trying other search engines, which helps with quite some of the clues, but definitely not #7

For 14, note the name given, and consider something which might be "drawn" for. Also note the rhyming scheme.

9Zoes_Human
Oct 22, 2019, 11:18 am

I've found them all except number 5. I think I might be stuck on one idea to the extent that I can't see any other thoughts. I've got it in my head that it's some sort of book series that ends in "quest" and is some sort of King Author retelling, so now I can't think of anything outside of those parameters, and nothing I've looked at that fits those parameters has gotten me a pumpkin.

Question for staff:

There is a missing piece of CK information that would make Clue #4 much more "fair" (in that you could get to the page of the relative if you know the name of the company founder if the relationship were entered properly). It doesn't seem right that the "diffiiculty level" of the hunt be changed mid-stream, though, by adding this information, since those of us who already did it were forced to resort to Google and others would not be if that information were present. Should we hold off on making this edit, or roll it back if we see it made, until the hunt is over?

Oh, yay, the Halloween hunt!

I've found 10 pumpkins and been distracted by needed separations and combinations. In here, I'm going to rest while picking up clues for the remaining four.

One pumpkin I found that I don't understand is #4. What does that answer have to do with Halloween?

It wasn't until I backed off and really read the first line that I realized what it must be.

Can someone help me out with # 8. I'm quite sure that the answer is the name of the mother of the author of Frankenstein , but when I search for that , I cannot I don't get a pumpkin. I've tried the author, books with the title of the author and tags etc. What am I missing ? Or am I on the wrong track altogether? I've got all the rest and #8 seems so obvious, but I'm not finding a pumpkin. Thanks in advance.

#4 was the most wretched thing ever. It has absolutely no bearing on Halloween/horror, and even knowing who it was about, and even after checking on wikipedia, it still took forever to find that. Please do not ever do another thing like that again.

I went off in a totally different direction for #4, the only one I didn't get without help. No wonder I couldn't figure it out.

The first part didn't make sense to me so I focused in on:

once a man built a box of MAGIC SAND
and then a whole EMPIRE appeared.
then his DAUGHTER penned her thoughts
on that KINGDOM MANY HOLD QUITE DEAR.
her MEMOIR'S not directly straight autumnal

Hmm, Magic Kingdom, built on sand, and Diane Disney Miller's The Story of Walt Disney is said to be more memoir that biography.

What's this? Where's my pumpkin? And what does this have to do with Halloween? Ha!

I still haven't been able to figure out what book and/or author for #2. I know what it is supposed to be and know it is in singular form, not plural, but just haven't found the right book or author. I got 14 pumpkins, which is much better than I thought I would get. So, I am calling it a day on the pumpkin hunt. Congrats to all who found all 15!! Congrats to all who found any!! # 15 - no need for google search find the author name by searching for a book title involving a 'house that goes tick'

142jjmcgaffey
Edited: Oct 24, 2019, 3:54 am

>11 2wonderY: Thank you - that was the last clue I needed! I was trying to rhyme the second line, of course (rhymes and rest don't come close to rhyming...I was trying to make it a limerick with a bad first line, I think).

Got all of them, with some Google help - in a couple cases (4, 12...) I knew vaguely what it was but had no author or book name to hang an LT search on. Though Black Spot led me astray to Treasure Island for a while...

I had all but #5 before I came to the thread, and I had _no_ idea what that was. I've actually only read the first book (yeah, I'm weird). And I got #6 by accident, on my way to #3 - awkward.

And for a bunch of them, I read the clue and the book popped up full-fledged - I'd read it or at least run across it multiple times. 1, 9, 13, 15 I searched by typing in the title directly.

I found 8 very very specific - literally follow the lines of the clue and you're there. It could have been a lot vaguer - something about creation or even "spawn" would have fit the theme and been a lot harder to figure out.

https://www.librarything.com/hunt_2019-11.php

One problem I had in the previous hunt is that a book would be the correct answer, but the banner wouldn't show because I was on an edition (a member's) page instead of the general work page for the book. The word "/book/" was in the page address. To see the pumpkin, I'd click on "Main page" to go the general page.

That might not be the problem you're dealing with. Every hunt, someone reports that the banners won't show up but the found items are recorded on the hunt page.

I'm stuck on #3. I know the author, but none of the titles I type in are working. Hint? Please?

UPDATE: Just figured it out. Thanks anyway.

Thanks for all the hints. I held off peeking until I was down to the last three, which for me were 8, 13, and 15, and then I had to look for extra clues. Got 'em all now.

I do love the hunts. The versification is, shall we say, a little off the vertical, poetically speaking, but somehow that adds to the entertainment.

First time I've tried one of these. Got all except #2 and really struggled with that. Then I'm damned if I didn't solve it by accident! A bit annoying, that ...

I don't believe they've been awarded yet, they are coming! They have to be awarded manually for our Hunts, and we're right smack in the middle of our busy holiday season, so thanks for your patience. :)
