Happy Valentine’s Day!

We've written 14 romantic clues for you to solve. Read and solve each clue, and find the page on LibraryThing that matches your solution. When you find the right solution, you’ll see a banner at the top of your screen announcing that you’ve found a heart. Remember: it's not necessarily a work page!

Go here for the hunt!

You have one week—until Friday, February 21st at 5pm EST—to find as many hearts as you can.

Use this thread to brag, ask for and give hints, etc

As in past hunts, we'll be awarding profile badges to anyone who finds at least one heart, upgrading accounts to lifetime memberships for anyone who finds at least five, and anyone who finds all 14 will be entered into a drawing for a LibraryThing or TinyCat t-shirt of their choice.

Important: When giving hints, please use the spoiler tag. To mark something as a spoiler, start your message like this:

<spoiler>

And end it like this:

</spoiler>

Troubleshooting

If you’re not seeing banners, or the hunt is otherwise not working for you, you may be using the old site design. Hunts don’t work on the old version of the site. You can switch to the new version by going here. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and look under "Design." You can always switch back after the treasure hunt, if you like.

Happy hunting!

P.S. Thanks to @conceptDawg for the gorgeous Swan illustration! He's made many of our treasure hunt graphics in the last couple years. We like them, and hope you do, too!

>14 bellsreads: when you have a guess, enter it into the site search (not to be but often confused with Your library search). You can then use the links in the side menu of the search results. The correct answers where the roses have been hid will be authors, books, tags, and Common Knowledge things: character and place.

When you've found a heart, a banner will appear at the top of the page. Your treasure hunt main page will update by graying out the hint and showing how many hearts you've collected.

If we don't read romance, is there any way of finding #14 based on *only LT searches based on what's in the clue*? I have a personal rule against using non-LT help, like Google, for these hunts - it seems to me like to be "fair" they should be things that, if you don't know them off the bat, you can figure them out based on LT information.

161lorax
Feb 18, 2020, 9:41 am

Maaly_Ahmed (#76):

They haven't given out the pumpkin badges yet. Badge distribution is a manual process (many, many things at LT that you'd think would be automatic are manual), and they haven't gotten around to it yet. My guess would be that they'll do both that one and this one together sometime next month.

Yes, there is a way. I did it.

Working on the assumption that the author's last name would rhyme with "Puillory", I thought about substituting the first letter. That gave me a couple of potential last names, which I ran through an LT author search. One found me an author with a rhyming last name and a first name that's a flower. That turned out to be correct.

Badges for this, and for the previous Halloween Hunt have gone out.

Badge names were changed post-message:

*Pumpkin Pie for participating in the 2019 Halloween Hunt
*Rogue's Rose or participating in the 2020 Valentine's Day Hunt

Other names were sent out in error, before I could get input from team.

*Finder's Flower or participating in the 2020 Valentine's Day Hunt
*Treasure Tart for participating in the 2019 Halloween Hunt

"Finder's Flower" was judged too sexual, which, frankly, I didn't think of.
Nobody liked "Treasure Tart." I vetoed various "piece of pie" ones as being sexual for (my, older) generation.

In future, we should solicit suggestions from members.

I'm new to LibraryThing. Will they post the answers now that it is over? I got 11 of them but was frustrated by two which seemed the simplest yet I was unable to find.

Yep - they will. Although being a Friday evening, it may not happen before Monday. :)

I nearly missed this - didn't see any banner and just chanced to click the discussion in Talk half an hour ago, so in time to take part. Got them all without coming in here for spoilers - 2 and 4 took me the longest.

Got 10 by myself. I think I did better last time. Thank you for all the helpful hints for the others! As always, a fun time at LT.

Too late to the game but I got enough for a badge, I hope :(

All you need for a badge is one.

The one that confused me the most was the reference to “Bulgarian” in #2.

>250 krazy4katz:, >251 EMS_24:: Have you read the Wikipedia article on the author? The reference to Bulgaria is explained (and of course, the work that reputedly led to Bulgaria).

It was a 'pop' clue for me - I was first looking for Bulgarians in Rome, not vice versa...

>252 Maddz: I guess my geographical and historical knowledge must be at fault. I thought the city he was exiled to was in Romania. Like you, I was looking for a Bulgarian in Rome. I am still puzzled.

>253 krazy4katz: I think the key is the substitution of B for V. He is a legitimate Vulgarian!

Oh! I would never have gotten that.

No, it's fair. I should have tried to rhyme with Romanian. In fairness, though, the Getae were across both countries, Tomis is very near the border, and was part of the Bulgarian Kingdom. :)

>257 krazy4katz: The Romans conquered a lot of Balkan land, which was later overrun by Bulgarians who displaced the Romanized population north. Both Romania and Bulgaria are on the west side of the Black Sea, north of Istanbul.

>257 krazy4katz:

At the time when Ovid was exiled, neither Bulgaria, nor Romania existed -- the territory (known as Dobruja in modern times) belonged to the Getae tribe. Later on, parts of this area will change hands more often than almost any other piece of land on the Balkans.

I am born in Bulgaria, I know where Ovid was exiled, I know that this was part of the Bulgarian Kingdom (more than once and during all 3 of the kingdoms) and I did not make the connection either -- the time jump required just never occurred to me - plus I partially dismissed is as a sloppy was to rhyme with vulgarian. Oh well. "Change" and "Roman poet" got it for me (so I ignored the rest) although I did try Catullus first - he fits the holiday better. :)

>259 AnnieMod: Huh, Catullus never crossed my mind, although he's a good fit for the holiday. When I read the clue I immediately thought of The Metamorphoses and The Art of Love.

Wrap up post: First, thank you all for participating in this year's Valentine Treasure hunt.

Over 1,400 people played, with a 53% completion rate. Good job, all!

Okay, to prizes:
Everyone who found at least one heart should have received a badge.

The 1,129 people who found at least five hearts have been upgraded to Lifetime memberships.

And *drumroll* the 5 winners of a LibraryThing or TinyCat tshirt (selected from the pool of those who complete all the clues) are: @overthemoon, @floremolla, @RedEyedNerd, @Avogt221, and @boxofdelights. Congrats! I will reach out to those members to get them their prizes.

Again, thanks for playing, and I hope to see you next treasure hunt!

- KJ
