Talk Like a Pirate Day Treasure Hunt - Pelican Edition

1kjgormley
Sep 18, 2020, 7:33 pm

It's Talk like a Pirate Day, so we let some pelicans loose on the site!

To celebrate Talk Like Pirate Day, we let a bunch of pelicans loose on the site for you to find. 16, to be precise. Read and solve each clue in the treasure hunt, then find the page on LibraryThing that matches your answer. When you find the right solution, you’ll see a banner at the top of your screen announcing that you’ve found one of the pelicans. Remember: it's not necessarily a work page!

Go here for the hunt!

You have just over one week—until Monday, Sept 28th at 9am EDT—to find as many pelicans as you can.

Use this thread to brag, ask for and give hints, etc.

As in past hunts, we'll be awarding profile badges to anyone who finds at least one pelican, and anyone who finds all 16 will be entered into a drawing for a LibraryThing coaster set and sticker. Shirt stock is difficult to access while the office is still closed for social distancing, hence the coasters.

Important: When giving hints, please use the spoiler tag. To mark something as a spoiler, start your message like this:

<spoiler>

And end it like this:

</spoiler>

Troubleshooting

If you’re not seeing banners, or the hunt is otherwise not working for you, you may be using the old site design. Hunts don’t work on the old version of the site. You can switch to the new version by going here. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and look under "Design." You can always switch back after the treasure hunt, if you like.

Happy hunting!

P.S. Thanks to conceptDawg for the pelican illustration! He's made our treasure hunt graphics in the last couple years. We like them, and hope you do, too!

Yay, I was going to post that I can’t wait for the pirate hunt, and found the hunt is on already. I was soooo happy! I will work on them right now :D

Ooo this is a hard one for me. Only got 5.

>3 amanda4242:
I do have 11. Think you can definitely get it with enough thought.

Edit: 10/16, improving
Edit: 12/16... 13/16... 14/16... 15/16

It's 2 I can't get. :| No hints requested - got all week.

Last edit: 16/16. Success. :D
Other last edit: I have no idea which book was #1. Seem to have accidentally gotten it. Eh.

This is a tough one! I'm not nearly as good as many others and always need hints to help me through, but this one is tougher than most. I'll have to pop back in for more hints, after I do a bit of Googling.

ETA: I've checked a bit more, and it appears that it's showing on all of the recently revamped pages.

Wow, this is the hardest one in quite a while! I am quite chuffed that I've got as many as I have, although still stuck on 1, 4, and 7. I'll keep plugging away at them, though! This is fun!

Edit: I got #1!

11Aquila
Sep 18, 2020, 11:14 pm

So you get to see a banner saying the hunt is on on those pages? I don't, I've never gotten banners for the hunts, no matter how much I select the new version (which I can't even find to try selecting again this time). I do get the banner at the top when I find a pelican, though.

Sep 19, 2020, 7:33 am

I've only ever tried the Lobster hunt before but, with the help of three clues on this page, I'm only missing #4, #9, #13, and #16 (I'm assuming I know what this is but don't know where).

30Petroglyph
Edited: Sep 19, 2020, 8:08 am

This one is trickier, which I think is a good thing. I've got 13 so far, and the three remaining (#1, #7, #13) are properly stumping me.

I'll keep trying. No hints needed just yet.

31DemetriosX
Sep 19, 2020, 8:13 am

#4 is about a specific person. A beverage often associated with pirates is named for that person
For #6, One word in the first line points at the title, one word in the third line points at the author's best known work, which has been turned into a TV series.
#13, You're looking for one word that rhymes with one of the unrhymed lines.
Finding the right page for #16 was the hardest part. Preface the usual URL with the first 3 letters of the language.

1, 2 and 9 are beating me. 9 especially frustrates me, because I know I just need to think of the right -ology word and can't.

32Figgles
Edited: Sep 19, 2020, 8:35 am

My first treasure hunt, it's been a fun way of spending a stormy afternoon - I've got 10 so far, still stuck on 3, 4, 7, 8, 13, and 16. Won't look at the hints yet...
Edit: got 16 thanks to a hint

For #8, I clearly skipped over the wein the first line, and went down some weird rabbit holes about code of conduct and synonyms.... you'd really think a book entitled "Pirate's Apprentice Code of Conduct" would be the answer, but no! and the French drinking age used to be 16, so.....

I already had the how-to idea for #8, but it wasn't indexed by the publication date in ck, and there are so few copies, it hadn't been tagged to come up in tagmash, so it wasn't coming up for me. I definitely had tried a few of those books in >53 calm:, but I guess hadn't clicked on that particular work in the name search result. I did find an author who had several tattoo coloring books though. Not the right lead!

Anyway, 16/16.

When I came back from the site of #16, I seemed to have been switched to the old design. The link provided above under Troubleshooting doesn't work. I get a page that says: error

How do I switch back to the new design?

168benitastrnad
Sep 22, 2020, 7:11 pm

Regarding clues to answering #3. Metallurgy is not helping. Neither are the pirates. Or combinations of the two. Looking in tags involves 40,000 titles. I must be missing something in the clue and can't figure out what it is I am missing. I keep looking for a book title, but is it an author? I hope it is not a tag because looking through 40,000 titles is a bit daunting.

As for the other #7 and #16 I'm giving up. Maybe later in the week somebody will give a clue that makes sense or a chip will fall into place, but it ain't happenin' right now.

Spoilers for #16

First spoiler:To get the pelican, you must log in to a translated version of LT. This is especially tricky because you only have two words with which to identify the language; if you're using google translate, you must enter *both* words *exactly* as they are written to get the correct language. Once you have the language, you will have to find the correct domain.

Second spoiler:The language is Catalan.

#16 is not as hard as many people make it out to be, and you certainly don't need to resort to Google.

It's obvious from the clue that you're looking for a language site.

If you know even a few words of any Romance language, you can tell which family it's in. For me, it was also clear that it isn't Spanish or French. I started trying less-familiar Romance languages from the Languages Zeitgeist tab and got it on my first try.

All the language sites are helpfully linked from Zeitgeist. You don't need to worry about figuring out how to type anything in, just click.

The answer is not a single word.

Page type:

As implied by the last line of the clue, you are looking for a character page here.

More specifically:

This character is a famous example of the theme of the hunt. He is fictional. The name is {title} {word}, where the second word is given by the first half of the clue (descriptively in the first two lines, with rhyming words in the third and fourth. The title is suggested both by the theme of the hunt and by the sixth line which suggests it is military in nature.

>195 benitastrnad: Yeah, it's a better question to be discussed over in the common knowledge group. Briefly: Characters are entered in common knowledge for works. Once entered on a work somewhere, a character page results, and it's possible to add additional details (character description, etc) there. All works with the same character name will link to the same character page.

If you don't want to hunt out particular works where someone has happened to have taken the time and effort to type out the characters and judged a particular character to be important enough for entry, you can also just search a character name in the main search, and then look at the common knowledge results rather than work/author results.

Wow! Finally got all of them with help from all of you. I did pretty well. Got ~12 on my own, but some of them came while I was looking for a different one. Then I couldn't remember how I got there. That happened with #8. The most difficult one for me was #7. I still don't understand the clue, but the hint was good enough for me to find it. For #16, I had the wrong language. I thought it was Portuguese but I couldn't find the site, which is strange. The real answer never occurred to me. Thank you everyone!

I got off to a late start, and I am unable to solve # 5, 8, and 15. I thought I had 5, but apparently not! Any help would be appreciated.

The hint at #102 didn't help with #5?

#8 You're not looking for a book or anything related to a book, but for another part of the site - something lots of websites have.

Study line 3 of the clue and then see what Wikipedia has to say.

For #8

Hint 2 librarything.com/(something that rhymes with piracy)

For #15

The other hints here helped me a lot with some of the riddles. Especially 16. Now I've been stuck on #4 for a while. Does anyone have a hint to make it a bit easier? The ones that have been posted haven't really helped me. Made me more confused tbh, because I had to look up on how to pronounce the word salty, in case I pronounced it wrong all the time.

Just saw the email about this hunt and went to it right away. Took me about 2 hours to get all 16 pelicans, whew!!!!

That was fun! Looking forward to the next one!

This one really helped me:

Do a tagmash of nonfiction and pirates. The book's author's name rhymes with salty.

When I did this, I immediately saw the author's name. The title has the name brand of the beverage that is associated with the pirates.

1. Do a tagmash of nonfiction and pirates. The book's author's name rhymes with salty.
2. Tagmash link: https://www.librarything.com/tag/non-fiction,+pirates
3. The answer is near the top of the list.
4. See the third entry.

Well, this was the hardest one yet and it is my 12th (?) hunt. I needed help on FOUR clues. Usually I figure them out myself.

Though if I had listened to my gut, I would have had #8 (thought I had it but "stockinged part" threw me off (afterwards I figured it out - sock puppet!)) and #11 (again, thought I had it, but naaah, too obvious.)

But #15 and #16 totally lost me and I don't understand what they have to do with pirates. #16 had me off looking for a new Spanish social networking site with a pirate-ish name and I wondered how LT would know I found it! Hmm, Taringa! means "ear" - that's not it.

Stop laughing!

ETA: GORGEOUS pelican.

Didn't see the announcement until this morning, but got 11/16 (including #16) rather quickly. Checking above now for hints on #1, 4, 6, 8, and 15. My only disappointment is that none of the "finds" seems like something I want to read. Usually I find at least one new thing for the TBR list.

I totally don't understand #16, so am going to be content to let it slide for this hunt. I have spent far too much time going down that rabbit hole, so time to say "See ya maties!" and quit. Maybe after it is done somebody will come back here and explain it to me and others who are looking for it.

I haven't sighted any pelicans hovering around my badges yet :0)

I have a suggestion for the treasure-hunt-powers-that-be: since there are so many (wonderful) treasure hunts and if (hopefully) they are going to continue, maybe you could give them their own group so they're easy to find.
