UPDATE: See the blog post
Chris and I have just rolled out a new catalog, or anyway a substantially revised one. There were also some changes to work pages. We'll blog about both soon—as soon as the really dire issues are addressed. There will no doubt be a lot of comments, questions, bug reports and etc.
To deal with the volume, I want to split this up into two threads:
New Catalog #1: Larger issues: Larger reflections on what we did. For the sake of argument, assume that it's "working" for you, and concentrate on whether you like how it works.
New Catalog #2: Bugs and small issues (this thread): Small issues, particularly ones we can just fix. I want these sequestered, so we aren't stuck with messages 2-20 in the main thread being about some trivial bug that got fixed.
More later. Thanks.

Request: If you're seeing something bad—obviously bad, not just an aversion to our colors, which are perhaps bad—tell us what your OS and browser is. And try hitting refresh (plus shift, control, whatever) a few times to make sure you have the right versions of everything.
Known issue: The talk page somehow changed it style slightly—different font and no lines on the box. This is a side-effect, and will be quashed as soon as we figure out how it happened.

Known issue: Speed. The new catalog is now slower, but so many files changed so radically that the server is having a hard-time keeping up with all the work of reparsing and regenerating files for you. Give it some time.

Ok, really small bug on Safari/iPhone 3G (most up to date OS version): Around the icons in the top bar I see tiny red lines of one pixel wide. On which side of the icon they are depends on the zoom level.
So my first impression: All in all I can say it looks different. Don't really know yet what to think of it.

There is almost 2 inches of a light green block at the top of the catalog. The tabs are normal and then there is the green block and then a bar that says next page in the middle in and 1-20 of XX on the left and the number of pages available on the right.
The column headings are gone.
The green box has icons that stack down, each on a new line.
The left is
List,
Covers,
Organize
Next is
Style
A
B
C
D
E
(Space)
Sprocket Symbol
Next is
Sort
Power Edit
Starting next to this but down one line from Print is a 9 inch bar that says search
Underneath there is another 9 inch bar that says Titles/Authors with a small triangle after it.
On the extreme right just above the first 9 inch bar (search) there is an empty white box not quite 1.5 inches.
It looks like what you have chosen is blue instead of green.

Firefox 3.0.8, Vista, the icons on the far right in Library view are a tad tiny with lack of contrast particularly for the Details page icon (preferred old icon) but if it could be made much darker in contrast to the background (book page same problem) would be nice. And perhaps a bit bigger? Ta. :)

I also have no dates (Started /Ended). I have entered them in the catalog, but they are blank. I have the correct number of columns, and I think the right ones, but no headings so can't be sure

When I tried the giant search bar to look for 2009 (which I have). The list I got starts under the bar at the top.
The first book I can only see the last 4 lines of the tags. The rest of the columns for the book are hidden under the bar that says Next Page in the middle. Everything but the tags are blank.

There's clearly a FF2 bug. Basically, everything "inline" is being shown "block." It's very off and wrong. FF2 is only 1-2%, but it's something we should support—and it took us by surprise here. Chris is on it.

The "search by" dropdown seems to go off the side of the page a little. If I drag the right edge of my browser to the right then it shows fine, but if I drag the right edge to the left with the dropdown dropped down, it doesn't move with the edge and gets covered up.

I keep FF at about 7/8ths of the screen width so that I can see the Vista sidebar.

For me, the Add books page no longer loads properly. The left-hand side of the page appears to load properly, but the recently added books list on the write displays as a large, empty white box. Lock washer? Lock washer?! I had to look that up. I guess it does look like one.
It's a little wheel cog. It's become fairly common for "preferences" or "advanced." I can understand that it's not universal, though.
I want to keep the pencil meaning "edit a book."

The search works, the column headings are back, and yes there is a difference in the bubble. Can you make it more pronounced though to differentiate between you have written a review or you have not ? Its soo small and soo minor in terms of difference.

Awhile back I had a problem not being able to sort titles ascending. The new sort box fixed that in Firefox, although I haven't finished playing with it.
When I click on sort a new tab opens and shows me the same list as in the tab I'm coming from. When I close the new tab I see the tab I'm coming from with a light box, I guess, with the sort controls. Do I need the new tab? Can you get rid of it?

Yes me too on the sort button. It turns the original screen grey, and then opens a new tab
with this URL http://www.librarything.com/catalog_bottom.php
The sort box is in the new tab, and not the original one.
Before when the top of the catalog was a mess the sort worked fine. Now not so much.
Also I have a question. I clicked on Organize (prefer Tags) and it has a listing of 3 tags with nothing there. I don't know if its supposed to be a space or a null but there is no title to it and it says I have 3. I sorted the column in the catalog both ways and the 3 books don't seem to come to the top, though maybe they did but I can't see a nothing if its part of a list with other tags. Because there is nothing there, I also can't click on the title to pull up the books with that tag.

I'm not sure if this is new or just the first time I noticed it but...
When you click on a link in Organize view, the displayed list of books is headed by the tag name, followed by a link labelled "remove" in square braces.
This is misleading -- nothing is "removed" per se when you click on this link (I was worried for a moment that this might be some misplaced way of deleting the tag). Instead, this link seems to simply return you to the full catalog. Would not "return to catalog" be more clear here?

Very minor issue happening intermittently for me. Sometimes, when I change the style of my library, the style bar re-displays "broken" with the B kinda hanging out in space (Note: I wasn't selecting Style B, I was selecting either A or E both times this happened). Clicking a new style again seems to fix this. Random, and way down the list of things you should worry about, but posted here for completeness.

Well, actually not. Chris fixed it for FF2 to some degree—it's the catalog now, not some ugly moon creature. But it's got a bunch of problems he's working through.

Right. I saw this too. And then I couldn't reproduce it. Does it ALWAYS do it? A steps-to-reproduce is what we need to fix it.
Clicking "show all {pages of the library}" partially obscures the catalogue.
Explain that more?

Well, you are IN your catalog. You're removing a search term. YOu'll see the same if you enter the catalog off an author, subject, etc.
I'm not saying it's good. I just don't know how to express it better. Anyone?

I notice a significant improvement in the speed of rendering 100 covers. In the past, such a request often bogged down, displaying half "default covers" when I have unique covers for nearly every book. Bravo for new servers and/or whatever other new technologies have launched.

The buttons along the top of the screen - List, Covers, Styles etc are no longer in a straight line but kind of higgledy-piggledy. E.g. in the Style section, D and the cog are raised above the others. The cog is no longer in its box. This is in FF3/XP Tablet. It looks fine in IE7, and looked ok in FF until about 15 mins ago.
Also, clicking on the Covers view in FF3 does nothing at all, but works in IE7. However it's been like that for months, so its not related to this change - I was just hoping it might fix itself with the new catalog.

FF3/Vista:
List style:
When I click "Show all" (as in show all pages), select a page, the icons in the List/covers/... bar are not aligned vertically and the top/down arrows of the sort icon are placed outside the icon.
Refreshing the page doesn't help. Clicking Home and back to Catalog shows a correct bar.
Clicking different display styles makes different icons higher then others (sometimes style A is higher, sometimes style B, ....)
Cover Style:
Same problem, but now all the time no alignment.
The show 100 ==> 40 problem is also here.
Clicking on sort opens an extra window where I can select sort options, but also opens a new tab with my catalog, but without the LT heading section.
The numbers for Members are not correct: They say there are 1 other members, when I am the only one. Except for 2 books, where the correct number 0 (zero) is displayed.
When I search for an item, the result is correctly displayed. There is an extra bar with Search: (remove). It took me 2 seconds to realize this would remove the search limit, not remove the results from my library. This used to be a (x), which is more logical to me.

It's sorting by the exact time you did it. It doesn't display the exact time, mostly for privacy reasons and because it would be boring, but it does maintain it, and effectively entry-date is sorting by the order. If two books were entered on the same second, the subsort would work.

Hmm. Not for me. Can you look down your rows and see if there's some unusually long language-name or garbage there. Antidisestablishmentarianism-ese?

I have it open to my tag Caribbean 9 books. One book has French in blue, 3 books have English in green. In the view I have open now, I get 3cm for authors, 4cm for Primary language, and 5 cm for original language.
edited to add 4.5 cm for the icons, and all other collumns in this view 4 cm.

i know i have a couple of duplicate works (with different isbns) but it isn't showing anything. example, the secret garden should show up there as isbn #0141321067 and #0590433466.
eta: also, and this is really small and fiddly, when it returns no results it should say 0-0 of 0 instead of 1-0 of 0.

So, uh, can we have the speech bubbles representing our reviews less subtle? I wouldn't mind if it was regularly black and white and bright green for the books I've written reviews for me.
Maybe it's just me, but I like that particularly detail to jump out at me as I look through my library. That subtle gray doesn't "pop" like the old, bright green numbers used to.

Sorry if this has been mentioned and I've missed it but ..
When I open my library all of the tool bar buttons (styles etc.) are nicely lined up and look pretty. Once I start clicking on them, they go all higgledy-piggledy up and down and it gets worse each time. Navigating away to 'Home' and back to catalogue sometimes fixes it, sometimes doesn't.

Bookel is the member that is using the low resolution/large font size and asked that we provide a way to disable the fixed powerbar. I told her that I'd look into that. I still plan on looking into a solution but just haven't had the time quite yet.

106: We still haven't settled on a name for that column. There's a long discussion about it in one of the Collections/Currently Reading threads from last week. Tim likes "Stopped" and various other forms have been offered: "Closed", "Finished", etc.
The idea is that "finished" isn't always correct since sometimes you just stop reading a book for a while and what to convey that in the start/stop dates. Yada, yada, yada.

The lovely new horizontal icons / tools on my catalog page look askew and line up poorly (FF 3.0.8 on Mac OS X 10.5.6), but I feel pretty confident that they will end nice and neat as shown in the "after" shot on the blog.
I decided to check it out in Safari 3.2.1 (same mac), and it looks very nice -- as advertised. But, I needed to log in to LT, and doing so left me in the top (logo / title bar) frame, with an an incomplete login form (I was able to select text and move downward in order to complete the login). It might be too challenging for many users to log in this way.

Chris, I posted a screenshot of my FF view here:
http://picasaweb.google.com/carport/Screenshots#5325247219505615010
like I said, it looks exactly as advertised in Safari.
I don't use Safari, so was not logged in to LT and probably had no cookies. The button on my browser bar goes to http://www.librarything.com/catalog/carport
since I wasn't logged in, I logged in from the upper right hand of the page "sign in/join" link. I just logged out and tried it again -- the link takes me to www.librarything.com to sign in, but within the top frame, instead of to a new page.
I'll try it in firefox after I post this, and if it behaves the same way, I'll edit this and add that info. ETA: same issue in firefox, goes to home page, but stays in top frame instead of new page.
ETA: 45 minutes later, I'm beginning to notice that some of the time, the new icons display correctly in Firefox. I'm trying to reproduce the discrepancies, but can't find anything consistent. Will try on a different system later.

I posted about this in the other thread before reading this one, because I didn't think it was the kind of thing that would get resolved instantly.
The idea is that "finished" isn't always correct since sometimes you just stop reading a book for a while and what to convey that in the start/stop dates.
So, the other side is that sometimes you actually do complete a book and "stopped" doesn't convey that. "I stopped reading this book" has a specific meaning that doesn't include completion.
I'd also argue that it's actually a bad thing to record "stopped" dates in the same field as "completed" dates, because then we can't get as much useful information from the field. Which books do people tend to read in the shortest and longest time? We could get interesting data like that if we looked at started dates and completion dates, but once we've thrown stopped dates into the same box, the data is a lot less meaningful.

I'm one of those who sorted by copy number often, and now it's much slower--click on sort button, scroll down one then another column checking what you want is on and what you don't want off, oops, is that "up" or "down" I'm looking for? Should they match on both "sort" or "subsort"? Can I turn "subsort" off? Do the choices stick until the next time I click on the sort button? etc.
Since you preserved sorting by column titles for Author, Title etc.,--and point out as much in the lightbox--could you not keep it for shared copies too?
Dislike "Stopped".
Switching from cover view to list and back and forth sometimes rearranges buttons--I guess that's what others described as "higgledy-piggledy".
And yeah, sorting shared books in any way doesn't work, it reverts to full catalogue view.

A few things:
- Clicking "show all" on the library pages gets rid of the column headers, and I can't figure out how to get them back without reloading.
- Using the spacebar to page-down actually goes a page-and-then-some down (the "and-then-some" is about the width of the header, so maybe it's going one page down based on the whole thing, but only the bottom part is displayed? Does that even make sense?) (Safari 3.2.1 on Mac 10.5.5)
- Another vote for making the "I've reviewed this" speech bubble more visible. It really just disappears into the background for me. Same for the edit views cog and to some extent the book detail icons, but I don't use these as much, so it's less of an annoyance.
- Still not a fan of "Stopped." Means something very different to me than "Read."

Only 'Private comments' is editable in 'Power edit' mode, i.e. by double-clicking on it.
To me this is a feature--I like being able to edit this field without doing the expensive (time- and load-wise) switch between the regular view and the 'Power edit' view--but it could be a bug. In any case, double clicking doesn't affect the final state of the html checkbox.

Everything appears to work as expected for me (FF 3.0.8), but I wanted to agree with the previous posters on the review bubble. The differentiation between books I have and have not reviewed should be greater to make coloring the bubble worthwhile at all.

Whoops, spoke too soon. If I click on Covers or Organize and then back to List view, that button panel falls out of sync - the Power Edit and Print buttons are lower than the rest of the panel, and the Sort button losses its icon. Reloading the page fixes it again (FF 3.0.8 with Vista).

On closer inspection, might not all the 'higgly-wiggly' be because the sort icon and the print icon are not actually ON the buttons they represent?

I'm seeing the misaligned buttons, too. Pretty badly misaligned, actually.
Also, a bug I don't think I've seen mentioned here yet: I assume that when I click on the "show" button on the cover view, it's supposed to give me the option to change the number of covers shown to something other than 40, but at the moment it does nothing at all.

(Also, while I'm complaining, count me among those who really dislike "stopped" as a column title. Especially as I like to keep a list of books read in each year, sorted by date read, that I can link people to, and it's not going to be at all clear to folks coming from outside LT what the heck that "stopped" field is.)

Add my vote to the chorus of "the contrast between reviewed and un-reviewed is TOO subtle". Bright green may be overdoing it, but I think the contrast could stand to be increased.

(Note: I haven't read this thread. Not good at it right now.)
A tag search also brings up results that aren't from tags, but (in the example I'm seeing) from a review. All right, now I'm sure. Whatever you set the search to search on, it's still an "all fields" search. This makes searching for reviews impossible, and having a private library, I can't get at them from my profile either...
And... oh dear. Way too few books in another tag search. But when I click on the tag, there they all are. That kind of behaviour will make wildcard and comment searching unreliable. Perhaps I should re-index again?
ETA: re-indexing fixed this.

Subsorting now works for me. That's great. You could make me really happy with it by changing the behaviour of the summary field back to the way it used to be (the last time I'm certain of is around the time private comments were introduced), so that it sorts by what is actually in it rather than by the autogenerated green text I can apparently kill, but not prevent from haunting my catalogue.

Also, it would be nice if we could sort by private comments. I'm trying to clean up my "comments" field and move personal-ish comments of little interest to anyone but me, my family, and my stalkers, to "private comments", and vice-versa. Which task is helped immeasurably by being able to sort by "comments", but not helped by not being able to sort by "private comments".

I pretty much set things the way I like them and then leave them alone, so just looking at my Catalog now without trying to change anything - it looks fine.
But I am also having a problem with screen resolution and the missing scrollbar at the bottom of the screen.
I am using screen resolution of 800 x 600 (old and wear progressive lenses, sorry that's how it is). The screen cuts off on the right edge and no way to view all the tabs or complete toolbar now. On the tabs Zeigeist is the last one visible, Tools is not showing. On the grey toolbar below where it is supposed to say Titles/Authors all I get is Ti. There used to be a scrollbar at the bottom to be able to deal with this (or maybe it just used to all fit on the page). Works ok at resolution 1024 x 768 except everything is too small for me to read.

This is a little nit-picky but it confused me so I will throw it out there.
I use the "tags" tab frequently (I was one of the ones lobbying to keep it way back when). When I click on the "tags" tab it takes me to the - "My Library" --> "Organization" screen - I realize this is correct (both get you to the same place). HOWEVER - the "My Library" tab is the one that gets high-lighted, even though I got there from the "Tags" tab. Since the first time I went there I was already in "My Library" --> "Organization" it appeared that nothing happened. So I ended up clicking it a few times.
I'm good with being able to get to the same page (tag list) from both directions but I think the tab high-light should change based on which tab I clicked to get there. (I would also like to be able to navigate to "tag cloud" and "tag mirror" from the "tag tab" - so that all "tag" things are together, but that is a different request.)

>126 jjwilson61: I've read the other thread, thanks. But Tim's decision as stated in that thread isn't reflected in the catalogue we're seeing today.
I know they've said that another field isn't an option right now, but I'd argue that the answer is to wait until another field is an option rather than starting to use the currently-existing field for two separate things.

Overall, I like the looks of the new catalog, but I have a small problem. Well over half my books are showing nothing in the holdings/reviews field. For example, the first book in my catalog (sorted by entry date) is "Mark of the Lion". I see nothing in the blue box under the tools. But, if I click thru to the book record, I see there are 78 people who own the book and 9 reviews.
XP, IE6 (I'm not where I can check how it looks with FF3).

I think my issue is the same as #146 dulcibelle's, but it is well more than 50% that have nothing in the field where members/reviews appear. This has been worsening throughout the day and less and less of my books show this data now.

Add'l info re. my post in #147. The members/reviews data works properly when I am in Style B which shows covers. In Style A which does not, the data is largely absent.

Same here - Style B (with covers) shows everything just fine. So does Style C (also with covers). Styles A, D, and E (no covers) all have the members/review data missing.

btw not seeing the titles of the columns renders the whole catalogue useless. For example I cannot sort any longer (strangely enough I have had to press the "sort" title twice for some time - pressing only once shows me only books entered up to 2007, only a second click shows the newly enterd books - pressing the sort button is not allowed to do twice, so I cannot see my newly entered books any longer).

mikebriggs: I'll check it out. You should be getting the correct styling but the lines have gotten crossed SOMEwhere.
cnrenner: It's a styling issue for you too. We just need to send Opera a different style for one of the elements. I'll take a look at it but, honestly, it's at the bottom of my list today. Opera is currently holding ground at 0.3% of our membership. Yeah, that's LESS than 1 percent. Obviously it gets less attention than...well....just about every other browser. You might be the only person using it (not really, but probably pretty close). :)

With my hardware/software it is the browser with the quickesz rendering - especially with regard to the NEW library interface. I just tried out firefox and it is incredibly sluggish with the new interface, especially when scrolling.
BTW even 0.3% of the membership should definitely be more than just me - if I calculate correctly :-)

I agree with above that the gear, the book, and the index card could use more contrast; as well as the my review/other review, etc.
It would be good to have a column header for members/reviews for quick sorting. The menu is there true, but it takes more mental time and clicks.
The interface changes are nice otherwise. :)

I haven't been following this thread, so I may have missed it when I scanned down, but the number of members with a work is wrong - it is the number for the record below. book B - #C
book C - #D etc.

'Sort' is working erratically for me now. If I sort by :
Primary: Date Read > Down (assuming it should return most recent date first)
Subsort: Entry Date > Down (assuming it should return most recent date first)
It actually orders my library with Entry date correctly sorted from most recent to oldest but the Date Read sort is the opposite (shifting all the date reads to the end).
This was working fine up until a little while ago ... I'm confused.

41, 50> Yes, I have three rows of pages and it covers up the column headings. Didn't it use to shove the headers down?
49, etc> I get the broken top bar a lot. Changing styles, clicking on a tag to filter, going to Next or Previous page - not every time, and not reproducibly (that is, changing to a particular style will one time produce the broken bar and the next time produce a good one), but approximately every other time ((almost) every change either fixes the broken bar or breaks a good one). Also what's broken varies - sometimes the style bar drops about a third of its height, leaving Style E up where the whole bar should be and showing an extension on the side as if there were another style supposed to be there (while the cog shows as in a separate button); sometimes the same for the Print button; sometimes the Search dropdown; sometimes Sort (and then the double arrows are overlapping the edges between the sprocket (cog) and the Sort button); etc. Always one or more buttons left up in the air and the rest of that bar dropped down, but which button is variable. And at least once there were two broken - E and the search dropdown. A lot of comments about this, many with screenshots showing what I've described here, but I'm going to leave my comment anyway. Another point I don't think I've seen anyone mention - when the style I'm in is the one that's misaligned, it doesn't get highlighted. That is, if E is up and the rest of the bar is down and I'm in style E, there's no highlight on the style bar. If E is up and I'm in style C, C is highlighted. Does that give you any hints, Chris?
This is a minor color complaint. The bar with the number of pages/Next Page/links to pages is exactly the color of the browser warning bar on my monitor - to the point where I've twice gone to right-click it and make it go away (by allowing Javascript, blocking a popup, or whatever it's complaining about this time). Maybe just a touch paler? Does it actually need to be a different color from the catalog background?
And a minor space complaint - does there really need to be that narrow strip of white below the tabs and above the top bar? It makes the tabs look more connected, I guess, but I'd be just as happy if the bar ran right under the tabs. It's a tiny little space but it doesn't seem to be particularly useful and a little more vertical space can't hurt.
There seems to be a little extra space between the pencil and the red X in the icon bar - but that space comes up with the tooltip for Delete this item. I haven't tried clicking - don't really want to delete a book.
Given that the only sort available for the icon column is Shared (there's no sorting by number of reviews), would it be possible to put a column header on that column to allow a quick sort? Then the question arises as to what word to put there...Sort, maybe, or just up/down arrows? Like many others, I frequently sort by Shared, and while I absolutely love the Sort button (I can actually _set_ the subsort! and the direction!) it does take more clicking and scrolling than clicking the column header. (agree with 167)

Oh, and old bug still present: I did a search and a minor edit on a book, then clicked the X on the filter to go back to my full library (and BTW, Tim, the X makes perfect sense to me and always did). The top bar was broken, so I did an F5 refresh to see if that would help - it didn't, it was still broken, and I was back to the search results (one book). Did F5 again, fixed the top bar but still on the search results. Clicked the X again and back to my full library, with the broken top bar (differently broken, BTW). An F5 refresh after dismissing a filter will bring the filter back - this has been true for a while.

Very minor, but the color change when you are mousing over the new buttons in the library, it changes to a terrible mustard yellow.
And for the review Icon maybe you can make the inside of the bubble a deeper royal blue for those that have a review for the book. Still too light and very similar to the one with no review.

Maybe I'm completely off mark, but the stuff with the misaligned buttons &c. has very much the flavour of a race condition.
Maybe related: In IE6 I sometimes, but not always, after a simple reload get misaligned member and review counts (too high up and too far left) and it recovers when I hover my mouse over one of the fields you can double click to edit.

When I resorted my library using the new 'sort' button, it bounced me to the first page of my library, rather than leaving me on the page where I was. Is this new, or did it always do this? For me personally, if I am in the middle of my library and I want to look at it sorted differently, I don't want LT to assume I want to be back on page 1 and bounce me there.

191: This puzzled me as well. It used to be possible to keep looking at the same set of books (the ones tagged "fiction", for instance), and sort them by tags, or publication date, or author. The new system requires you to set sort order first, and then to do a search, or click on a tag, or enter your catalogue from an author page, or whatever. I think I could live with this, as I rarely change my sort order, but if you want to change it a few times for a subset of books it is extremely annoying.

I'm one of those who sorted by copy number often ... Since you preserved sorting by column titles for Author, Title etc.,--and point out as much in the lightbox--could you not keep it for shared copies too?
The problem is that "shared" column was also the "here's a bunch of things you can do" column. It was a mix of data and functionality that I think made things hard to understand, particularly for newbies. As I said, many users found sort confusing, and even frequent users didn't know about subsorting. The sort button gives those people an entre into what you can actually do. It also allows you to sort by fields that you aren't actually showing. The only thing "taken away" is on-screen sorting by number of members. To add it back would again put a false title over the "toolpad" column, and I'm not going to do it.
Dislike "Stopped".
Suggest alternative.
Contrast on reviewed and un-reviewed
I'll work up another version.
The green text is your title and your author. That's the feature. It's not haunting your catalog. It is your catalog.
sort by "private comments"
The problem here is that it's fairly easy to prevent display of private comments. It's much harder for it to prevent people from sorting by a field, if sorting is allowed. So we could make it sortable, but you'll be able to sort other member's catalogs privately—or at least go from your catalog, sorted that way, to others. It's a little fiddly ball of annoyingness.
I am using screen resolution of 800 x 600 (old and wear progressive lenses, sorry that's how it is).
Sorry. We're not going to be able to help you much. 800x600 is now 3.35% of visits, and only 2.72% of member visits. Our main competitor has been 950 from the start. Before the change, 800x600 wasn't fully okay. It's not okay now either. Ultimately, if you're going to use 800x600, you're going to see layout problems.
The tags tab is going away. People are going to complain, but we aren't going to keep it around when we add collections. It already made no sense and was hurting the UI. The more true now.
I see nothing in the blue box under the tools.
You see zero, or you see nothing?

under power edit: misc powers, either the language used is wrong or the function doesn't work, as it's showing i have no duplicates.
i know i have a couple of duplicate works (with different isbns) but it isn't showing anything. example, the secret garden should show up there as isbn #0141321067 and #0590433466.
also, and this is really small and fiddly, when it returns no results it should say 0-0 of 0 instead of 1-0 of 0.

Hmm. I like the new search box in catalog view; the old one was truncated in a very annoying fashion. However, (doncha love "however") I just did a search of my library the Search box with "Tags" selected in the drop-down menu. I wanted stuff tagged "art;" what I got was anything with "art" in any field.

i hadn't had any of the toolbar problems that everyone else seems to be experiencing until just now. i went to check that cover view: show per page was working correctly (which it is!) and when i went back to my library, the toolbar was wonky.

"Finished" - goes with Started. "Ended" would be okay. Hell, if we're being old school, I liked "Read" perfectly fine. But the date I finished reading a book and the date I stopped reading a book are two separate things (and two separate sets of books), and the new label on the old field conflates them.

The problem with leaving the "members" header off the column is that there's no way to sort a subset of items by member.
Currently, the sort menu refreshes to show the whole library instead of sorting the displayed items.

Clicking links on the author page, Common Knowledge section, brings up blank pages for those connections. Ditto for Common Knowledge sections on works pages that have been connecting to the lists that similar to those from author pages (as mentioned above). Links on the work page, Common Knowledge section, that connect to other web pages (awards, series, etc) appear okay.

207> But the date I finished reading a book and the date I stopped reading a book are two separate things (and two separate sets of books), and the new label on the old field conflates them.
But that's the whole point. The field has to stand in for both the date you finished a book and the date that you may have decided to give up on the book.
I agree that is less than ideal for purposes of using the data in the future and the solution I prefer instead of making it two dates, is to add a field for why you stopped reading the books. Values could be Finished, Boring, Returned-To-Library, Lost, Destroyed-in-a-fire.
Stopped goes with Started and is fairly generic so it goes with whatever reason for stopping. But I think I prefer Begun and Ended as Ended seems more final that Stopped.

You can never represent reality in software. If you add "date stopped" then I object that I didn't STOP reading a particular reference book—there was a period I was using it; now I'm not. Etc. etc. At some level the software feature is meatware. The software lives in the user and some minimal way for them to tie the meat to the software—tags, for example.

I don't think Stopped is generic. "I stopped reading that book" means "I gave up without finishing it."
I consider Ended or End more generic because it's not used as much to describe a reading state, but it's still fairly clear what it means.
My personal preference would be Finished, since I think more people use the field for that than for recording when they stopped reading a book.
But when it comes to intuitiveness, I don't think you can beat Date Read. If someone clicked on a user's preferred display style and saw "stopped" or "end", I'm not sure it's entirely clear what it's referring to. The more generic you try to make it, the less clear it is to the average user.

Ok..I'm resorting to the crazy now. Since I can't reproduce it on any browsers or OS combinations that I have then I must delve into the darkness. I'm asking for volunteers...
Somebody that is seeing the wonky button problems and can repeat it, and will let me do screen-sharing with them via (preferably) iChat in Leopard or (possible too) VNC in Windows. Firefox users only. And your computer needs to be accessible from the outside world, but I can probably help with that if need be.
If you are willing to volunteer send me a message and I'll give you my iChat handle (not that it takes a rocket scientist to deduce it for yourself) and we can figure this stuff out.
You get a front row seat to my exciting debugging process and some witty banter. Plus, we'll send you a cuecat or LibraryThing T-shirt for your troubles. Maybe Tim will even come and do your laundry.

The green text is your title and your author. That's the feature. It's not haunting your catalog. It is your catalog.
I'm not sure we understand each other.
What I mean is that even when I delete the green text and put in something completely different, like book/shelf size, Summary still sorts by the green text (which is no longer there, or at least is not visible to me), and not by the new content. This is a relatively recent behaviour; before we got Private Comments, Summary sorted by whatever you had in it, green text or black. I know this because I used to keep my shelf order system in the Summary field until I moved it to Comments when that was made sortable. I'm asking if we can have the old sorting behaviour back.
If you mean the Summary field isn't really supposed to be used for anything but title and author information and therefore will not sort any content except the green text, please confirm this so that I have the certainty that this will not change. I will then either move my book/shelf size information to a content-sorting field (I'm thinking of Date) or await discussions on the possibility of user-defined fields.

Tim, I'm starting to recover from the shock. I think what you mean by OS is my Microsoft Windows XP, Professional Service Pack 2. What I'm seeing on "my books" is not what you're showing as examples. In addition to the blue line through the task bar, I have strange boxes to the right of the list of books. These boxes are blank and have two numbers under them. Patti, since post #245 was your first look, try clearing your cache and having another look. How you clear your cache depends on your browser (different from your OS) - try holding down the Control key as you click the Refresh button, then (just for fun) hold down the Alt key as you click Refresh. Another common method (FireFox) is to press Control-Shift-Delete at the same time (NOT Control-Alt-Delete!).

Please consider changing "Stopped" to just about anything else. "Stopped" is just . . . wrong. It sounds like a clogged up sink, or a friendly chat with a cop after going 50 in a 30 zone, or a minor medical condition calling for extra fiber.
How about "Finished" or "Ended"? Both go with Started, both are far more indicative of how probably 90% of people use that field.

I hope Tim will fix things so that folks who use IE can get the right pages and can do so without debugging messages.

The "! x shares n books with you" message on someone elses catalog is a horrible yellow. And takes up unnecessary vertical space. It used to fit quite neatly next to their name, and didn't need highlighting in lemon.
Also other people's catalogs have the reviews under the shared icon, rather than next to it!
I'd mush prefer "Finished" but "Ended" is still a vast improvement on Stopped, which is just wrong.

Please consider changing "Stopped" to just about anything else. "Stopped" is just . . . wrong. It sounds like a clogged up sink, or a friendly chat with a cop after going 50 in a 30 zone, or a minor medical condition calling for extra fiber.
These are the BEST reasons I've heard for changing that label - thank you, Talbin! :-D
I agree with others that "End" or "Ended" sounds better.
On a related note, the sort pop-up has "date read" in its options. I think you'd want to be as consistent as possible in naming those options - so I suggest changing the column name to the more pleasant "Ended" and the sort box option to "date ended." Just my two cents. :-)

Is this still the right place to talk about power bar problems when the buttons are not just misaligned but totally screwed up, as reported by #152: MikeBriggs?
If not here, where?
That is definitely not just a Firefox problem. I get it consistently, all the time with Epiphany GNOME Web Browser 2.16., like in Mike's picture of Firefox: List/Covers/Organize in one column, then Style/A/B/C/D/E/Edit in a column, Sort/Power edit/Print, then the rest of the width for Search/Searchoptions and a little text input area above them on the far right.

I just had a small issue in the catalog. I am at work on mac OSX with Safari 2.X
I added tags to a book Patpong Sisters and it was fine. Then I tried to add tags to Bangkok 8, and when the tag box opened the tags from the previous book were already in the box.
I hit cancel and closed the tag box for the second book. I then tried to reopen the tag box, hoping the previous book's tags had cleared, but I can't open the tag box. I have double clicked several times and it won't open.
Also on the work/book (not sure which) page
http://www.librarything.com/work/168195/members/14955627
When I pressed members to see who had rated it, there is a listing for one 4.5 rating (from the grid), but the listing of members is missing the stars next to the name of the user who rated it 4.5.
That person is at the top of the list, above the 4.0 ratings, not a the bottom where a no star listing would go.

A) I still have the problem mentioned in post 133 when using IE7 XPsp3. Have tried changing resolution but that does not solve the problem.
Oddly enough, when at work and using IE6 XP, it looks just fine.
Both screens as set up with the same resolution.
B) When I search for "2009" + all fields, something that ought to result in 80-odd titles, only results in 4, two of which do not have 2009 anywhere in their data.
I have re-indexed my library prior to this search.

Hello Tim,
I am a bit disappointed by what is happening. I complained about about serious bug yesterday that makes librarything unusable for me with my Opera browser and got a like answer based on percentage of membership. While I do be reasonable and can see how priorities must be set, I would not like to be shrugged off just because my work environment is not as popular as someone else's. As I see it until one or two days ago everything was just fine and librarything worked excellently for me - I did not ask for any changes, I liked what I had, I did not complain (fact is, I do not even like the optical change, I liked it better as it was before, it was faster and seemed to be more stable, but that is just me).
I invested a lot of time and energy in my catalog - that was voluntarily and I did it for myself, but I expected things to go on working. In my view those of us who do not mainstream equipment or have older machines and older systems should not be pushed away like that. If 800x 600 worked before, I think from a moral standpoint it should go on working, as well as my catalog which should continue to be accessible for me with my Opera browser. I may be only one or to percent and the man with 800x 600 may be not much more, but I would hate to see librarything starting (?) to judge its members by these standards. I expected something different. Sorry.
Just my two cents.
And I guess you and your team are busy and stressed and overworked at the moment, which I understand.

275cnrenner
I guess it is not very productive to follow that chain of discussion (which I started), but let me point out that my Linux system and my Opera browser are state of the art. BTW Opera is renowned for its strict adherence to standards so if things don't work it is less Opera and more server-side which is problematic. It is just that Opera is not widely used on desktop systems - and I see the point in that argument - but please see mine: things DID work for me, and now they don't, and it was not really my fault and while Opera is rare it does adhere to standards.
What really irked me: say it is difficult, say it takes time, but don't say I am unimportant because I represent only less than one percent of the membership. While this is a "reasonable" argument in my view it is not a good one, really - I could really talk long and loud on that subject.
So, I stop complaining here, thanks for having been patient.

I apologize profusely if this has already been addressed, but is anyone else having issues with the book pages displaying much wider than they used to?
The green boxes ("Buy Borrow or Swap"; "Popular Covers"; "Rating") are aligned so far to the right that I need the horizontal scroll bar to view them. They used to be aligned directly under the Search/Zeitgeist/Tools Tabs.
It's not a huge issue, but the previous way was more aesthetically pleasing as well as convenient.
(Oh and I'm on Windows XP with Firefox)

Also the tag text box problem is gone, but some of the text boxes for tags are tiny, while some are larger, any way to make them a uniform size, and larger rather than smaller ?

How curious. I just noticed that one instance of an author had his surname fully capitalised. The view I was on was first, last so it looked like Piers ANTHONY. I double clicked and changed the caps so it looked like Anthony, Piers in edit mode and clicked save. It stayed Anthony, Piers until I went off the page and came back, then it displayed as expected as Piers Anthony.

When I click on the review icon for my Penguin copy of The War of the Worlds and go to the review page, the "Stevil2001's review" box is entirely blank. But I have reviewed the book, and I can still see my review down below. I suspect this is because I own multiple copies, but only one of them is reviewed.
Yes, I've just looked at my copies of Ahistory: An Unauthorised History of the Doctor Who Universe. Clicking the review links for each (1st edition and 2nd edition) brings up my review for the 2nd edition.
Similar problems on other books where I have multiple copies.

Stevil, when I click on your first link in 293 I do see a review in the Stevil2001's reviews box.

You won't see the review because you don't have a review for that BOOK.
Reviews are "book" level, not "work" level data. (So you can review all three copies that you have - say you want to comment on the cover or illustrator or the additional biographical material or the translation - that wouldn't apply to all your copies so the review is specific to the copy that you entered it on.)
So I don't thing this is a bug/problem - it is working the way it is meant to.

I noticed for the actual new review box that it seems to eat spaces between paragraphs. I had a single space to set them off - works well in talk. When I copied it to the review box (using the new review link) and saved, it took them out. I had to go in and edit - used old edit book link, not the new review link, and put in double spaces which edit kept when I saved it. When I went in to the new Review Link and saved it (to see if it would save or eat the double spaces), it took out the double spaces.
Can someone fix the new review box that you get from the new review link, so that it doesn't eat spaces.
309FicusFan
Its just the spaces. It looks OK if you use the old edit book link and the save button at the bottom of the page. Its the new review link and save that seems to have the problem. When I open to edit the spaces are still there, but don't display when you use the new review link with new save button.

Hmm. I admit I haven't read all the newer posts here, but did anyone mention a problem like this? (not sure if it's related to new catalogue or newish work pages or whatever...)
When I input tags using the Edit Book link on the work page, the tags acquire double spaces between each tag after I save. It doesn't show up on display, only on the edit page, but it's there, and i know it didn't used to happen.

Two spaces between each tag has been there for quite a while (I have mentioned it elsewhere before, no one responded). For the punctuation sensitive, it's a little annoying, but there you go. Appears to be what they set it as, for many months now.

Believe me, I'm not lying. The problem is an out-of-memory error. It relates to the tags. I don't know which is worse—more tags on books or more unique tags—but the combination is causing a memory error. I'm certain I can change how the tag-getting function works, but I have to do that.

I've probably simply missed it in learning a new system and beginning the very early stages of entering my books (and returning to them as I re-read for proper comments on them) but...
I like to sort my list by Author, (Series, order) or /title
I not only don't see a way to add the columns for series and order, I don't see the way to change the way they sort.
A good explanation in the Getting started: sorting tutorial would be very helpful (and if it's NOT there, then adding it)

Hi, dragonasbreath
There are a number of helpful hints in the Wiki (link at the bottom of every page).
To add columns to your display, look for the little button with a gear on it (next to A B C D E on the tool bar). When you click that you will get a screen which allows you to select the columns for each viewing style; you can use the defaults, or change everything.
Also on the button bar is one with little blue up and down arrows; this allows sorting on some fields that you can't sort by clicking their headers (though I am afraid Series isn't one of them). It also allows sorting within.
Hope this helps!

There isn't a Series column - at least, not one in your own library. There's a CK:Series column, which contains Common Knowledge info - that's entered by everyone and shows where it touches your books (you can enter data there too, but remember it's not just showing up in your library but in everyone's). The problem with CK is that it's not sortable. This is reasonable, because you can have multiple series attached to a single book (Narnia:Publication Order and Narnia:Chronological Order, for instance) and it can't figure out how to sort. But it's not too useful for sorting in your library.
What I do is use my Comments field, which works well if you're not using it for something else - I have a view that contains both CK:Series and Comments and copy the data as appropriate. I enter the series the way that makes sense to me, and skip series that don't make sense to me - and since the data in the Comments field is entirely mine, that's fine. And it's sortable. I write it Series, Order so that it sorts correctly (with leading zeros for series that get up into double digits - 01, 09, 10 sorts correctly, 9, 1, 10 is annoying). You can use any sortable field that you're not using for other stuff - Summary, for instance - if you've got stuff in Comments.
You can do a two-level sort - either click on the header for the subsort and then the header for the main sort (ie, click Title then Author and you get it sorted by author and by title within author), or click the double-arrows button staffordcastle mentioned (it's the first (leftmost) one in the group of three that's closest to the middle) and set the primary and secondary sort there. But again, there are some things you can't sort by, including any of the CK fields and Private Comments.
