- G K Chesterton has been described as one of the most unjustly neglected writers of our time. Born in 1874 -when Kensington still formed part of Middlesex-, he became a journalist and later began writing books and pamphlets. His work includes novels, literary and social criticism, political papers and spiritual essays in a style characterised by enormous wit, paradox, humility and wonder. He converted to Catholicism in 1922 and he explores the nature of spirituality in many of his books and essays, including the mighty Orthodoxy.Chesterton created the fictional priest-detective Father Brown, and wrote on apologetics. Even some of those who disagree with him have recognised the wide appeal of such works as Orthodoxy and The Everlasting Man. Chesterton routinely referred to himself as an "orthodox" Christian, and came to identify this position more and more with Catholicism, eventually converting to Catholicism from High Church Anglicanism. Biographers have identified him as a successor to such Victorian authors as Matthew Arnold, Thomas Carlyle, Cardinal John Henry Newman, and John Ruskin. On his contributions, T. S. Eliot wrote,
He was importantly and consistently on the side of the angels. Behind the Johnsonian fancy-dress, so reassuring to the British public, he concealed the most serious and revolutionary designs—concealing them by exposure ... Chesterton's social and economic ideas...were fundamentally Christian and Catholic. He did more, I think, than any man of his time—and was able to do more than anyone else, because of his particular background, development and abilities as a public performer—to maintain the existence of the important minority in the modern world. He leaves behind a permanent claim upon our loyalty, to see that the work that he did in his time is continued in ours. - Cause of death

Folio Archives 184: The Father Brown Stories by G. K. Chesterton 1996 in Folio Society Devotees (September 2023)
Reviews
Written as a “metaphysical detective thriller,” Chesterton achieves a fresh style and effect in this novel that I’ve not yet encountered. Right up to the last chapter, the story reads as an entertaining and fast-paced mystery, following the adventure of detective Gabriel Syme as he infiltrates the underground anarchists of London. He himself deceptively earns a place on the anarchist’s council of seven, each of whom are named for a day of the week. Chesterton’s wit and humor are on show more full display as he weaves his tale, which would be entertaining enough apart from any higher meaning, but the reveal of the last chapter takes it to another level entirely. He so colorfully answers the question: What is a man in the great scope of the universe? He is a word spoken by God in the darkness, a day of creation, sent to infiltrate the anarchy of disorder and work out the righteousness of God. He obeys his commission at great peril, but discovers great help and surprising kinship as he does. show less
I first read Father Brown in middle school: after having read works by Agatha Christie and Arthur Conan Doyle, I wanted to read other early detectives in the genre. Father Brown’s quiet intelligence and masterful exploitation of the stereotypes people form about him make him an interesting sleuth to follow. The stories are not really ones where you can guess every last element of the crime, but if you’re careful you might land on the same person that Brown has identified as the show more culprit.
The earlier volumes are better than the later ones, in my mind, but once you get into a groove with the collection it’s easy to read a few stories at a stretch and want to read more. My favourite story is still “The Blue Cross”, which is the very first one.
I had previously rated this five stars, but I’m dropping it to four stars because more stories than I remembered were steeped in casual racism (particularly against people from “the Orient”). It wasn’t just characters displaying these attitudes; the narration used some cringe-worthy language as well. So if you’re planning to read these stories, keep that in mind. show less

William Cobbett is an excellent short biography of the great English farmer-journalist written by one of the mightiest wordsmiths of the early 20th century. Cobbett was a man before his time and also one deeply interested in his country's past and the lives of its common people. His reformist writings inflamed hearts and minds across the country and got him numerous court dates and prison sentences, as well as two periods of exile in America. He believed in reforming the system to bring the show more power to the people and clearly saw the industrial progressivism that would soon personify the Victorian Age as a threat. In short, he was a man after Chesterton's own heart, and you can feel the author's affection for his subject on every page. A kind of proto-populist, Cobbett is a man whom more people should know. And this book is a pretty good place to start that acquaintanceship. show less
Oh dear. This isn't really a book about Aquinas. It doesn't present much in the way of a biographical sketch, it doesn't delve into Aquinas' theology, and while the book mentions Aquinas quite a lot, it also discusses other significant figures from Christian history, notably St. Francis. This book reads more as a casual conversation in which a modern mind reflects on the influence of some Christians from long ago. It's really a book of modern musings, through which the thoughts and show more personality (of someone, I assume the author) shine from the page with much more force than the ideas of Aquinas. And I suppose that's okay, as long as you don't expect a biographical or even strictly historical work. If you want to sit down for a conversation with a modern author, you could do worse than Chesterton; he loved his faith, and he loved Christmas. He's exactly the sort of person I'd love to spend time with. Sadly, I could tell, with more and more clarity as the book unfolded, that Chesterton would NOT have wanted to spend time with me. There is a fair bit of anger in these pages—contempt even—for fellow Christians who are not Roman Catholic.
As for the book as a whole, it's difficult to understand without a thorough background in the history of the Church, and I suspect people who are already thoroughly grounded in Church history would have little cause to pick up this tome. Worse, the book rambles quite a bit, going here and there down little side-streets before eventually circling back to whatever the main point was. It seems very hap-hazard and disorganized, almost stream-of-consciousness. The best chapter, IMO, was the next-to-last, in which he explored in a mostly straightforward manner the ideas of being and permanence and change. The worst chapter, I think, is the last, because it here that he paints with such broad strokes that his book doesn't feel like history at all. It needs better grounding.
