About the Author
Jules Verne was born on February 8, 1828 in Nantes, France. He wrote for the theater and worked briefly as a stockbroker. He is considered by many to be the father of science fiction. His most popular novels included Journey to the Center of the Earth, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, and show more Around the World in Eighty Days. Several of his works have been adapted into movies and TV mini-series. In 1892, he was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in France. He died on March 24, 1905 at the age of 77. - Jules Verne was born at Nantes on the 8th of February 1828. After completing his studies at the Nantes lycée, he went to Paris to study for the bar. His first success as a writer was obtained with Cinq semaines en ballon. He was a member of the Legion of Honour. He died at Amiens on the 24th of March 1905. His posthumous works were edited by his son, Michel.Jules Gabriel Verne 8 February 1828 – 24 March 1905) was a French novelist, poet, and playwright. His collaboration with the publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel led to the creation of the Voyages extraordinaires, a series of bestselling adventure novels including Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864), Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1870), and Around the World in Eighty Days (1872).
Verne is generally considered a major literary author in France and most of Europe, where he has had a wide influence on the literary avant-garde and on surrealism. His reputation was markedly different in Anglophone regions where he had often been labeled a writer of genre fiction or children's books, largely because of the highly abridged and altered translations in which his novels have often been printed. Since the 1980s, his literary reputation has improved.
Verne has been the second most-translated author in the world since 1979, ranking between Agatha Christie and William Shakespeare. He has sometimes been called the "Father of Science Fiction", a title that has also been given to H. G. Wells and Hugo Gernsback. - Cause of death

I finished Jules Verne's Le Sphinx de Glaces. Verne wrote his book as a follow-up/continuation of Edgar Allan Poe's novel The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket.
Reading Verne's methodical sequel after Poe's meandering novel had me picturing...
Poe created a sense of creeping dread in his meandering novel that was part seafaring misadventure, a bit of scientific flora & fauna diary, & a bizarre horror story, capped by an abrupt, inconclusive ending. His perplexing narrative spurred show more both H.P. Lovecraft & Jules Verne to write their own novels to continue & flesh-out Poe's story.
H.P. Lovecraft's novel borrows the setting & builds on the abrupt ending, creating a horror landscape that delves into the Antarctic area decades after Pym disappears. Lovecraft's horrific scenes extend the setting & creatures, imagining what Pym might have also encountered had Poe decided to share Pym's Antarctic fate with us.
As for Verne's novel, I imagine the very rational, scientific Verne reading Poe's novel for the first time, loving the artistic élan, the mystery, but twitching at Poe's inconsistencies, dead-ends, & hanging plot points....
And, then, Verne set-about writing his own novel, weaving Poe's entire narrative into his own plot, fixing/explaining any incongruities, effectively retelling & extending the story of Pym to bring the entire narrative to a logical, complete, & sound ending.
I'm not sure whether Poe would have been amused or horrified at the 'tidying' that Verne does with his story.
Even so, Verne writes a wonderful 'adaptation' & sequel to Poe's novel & I think the two books read together fit together like, well... like The Odd Couple fit together -- completely different, yet complementary, & highlighting the best of each writer.
Bravo to Poe & Verne. (I also enjoyed Lovecraft's variation on the Pym story, but his was less intrusive & less revisionist of Poe's work than Verne's version; Lovecraft's is almost more of a stand-alone book than Verne's is, imo.) show less

This was one of my most re-read books as a youngster in a poor pulp paperback translation with a picture of James Mason and giant mushrooms on the front cover.
Returning to it over 30 years later in William Butcher's crisper and clearer 1992 translation of the original 1864 text has been a revelation on two counts.
First, it still holds all the excitement of my young years despite the obvious absurdities in the narrative although these are no less or more absurd than the general run of modern show more science fiction.
The journey is told as if you could follow it on a map - a map which could never exist - and the characterisation of young Axel, the monomaniacal but ultimately kindly Professor Lidenbrock and the imperturbable Icelander Hans is superb.
Even the minor characters (Miss Grauben, the servant and cook Martha and the Icelanders who pass through the first third of the story) are well drawn and believable. The wry humour is exquisite.
The moment when Axel thinks that he is left alone to die because he took a wrong turning filled me with the same existential terror as it did all those years ago. The 'sea crossing' and fight between monsters still excites. The setting is imaginatively realistic at all times.
Above all, brought out by Butcher's improved translation, the writing is crisp and functional, just how I like it. It is almost a movie script 'avant la lettre'.
The second revelation is that it is also a mock-educational text under the marketing influence of Verne's publisher Hetzel. When I first read this, I allowed the scientific gobbets of information to pass over my head but they are nothing if not persistent.
Introducing facts to give credibility and inform in a didactic way is now a trope of popular thrillers rather than science fiction but, although no more reliable than any modern popular science journalist, I can see contemporary readers being thrilled by it all.
As someone whose inheritance from his grandfather included an English translation of Figuier's 'World Before the Deluge' (1863), I already had a mental image of the battle of the icthyosaur and the plesiosaurus that matched Verne's own cultural environment.
On both grounds, clarity as an adventure story and insight into the popular scientific culture of mid-nineteenth century Europe, the book remains a work of genius and stands up well 150 or so years later.
Butcher's introduction to this edition is informative. He makes a good case for Verne's importance even if I was not persuaded by some of his more wild and abstruse literary claims.
This is deservedly a classic of European literature but is it fair to claim it as a founding text of contemporary science fiction? It strikes me as an imaginative adventure story set in a stone of contemporary science but not yet making the leap that Wells would make.
The science is part of the story, the McGuffin, but it might be better to see it a novel of industrial era didacticism which has burst its bounds because of the imaginative flair of the literary genius behind it.
One can imagine being a contemporary wanting the next novel even before finishing the first despite the didactic elements, lightly worn though they are. The emotional roller coaster and adventure is what grips, not the science. show less

What a wonderful thing an imagination is. In Journey to the Center of the Earth we get to appreciate the imagination of Jules Verne in his 1864 novel that follows Professor Otto Lidenbrock, his nephew Axel, and their guide Hans down a volcanic tube in Iceland in a quest to reach the center of the earth.
A little dated and somewhat silly at times, this was still a fun and exciting read that had this group of adventurers encountering many dangers, including prehistoric animals before they show more discovered themselves back on the surface of the earth. Although many of the scientific “facts” that were used in this book have since been disproved, the author’s vision and his writing style make this book a classic of nineteenth century literature.
I read this book in instalment form through Daily Lit and as much as I thoroughly enjoyed my trip to this subterranean world, I can’t help but wish I had discovered this book when I was young as I know it would have fired my own imagination tremendously. Coming to the book at my advanced age, does allow me to understand why this book has been filmed for both movies and television numerous times as the author’s vision of a strange inner earth is vivid and one can see that it would play well on film. show less

The Secret of Wilhelm Storitz: The First English Translation of Verne's Original Manuscript (Bison Frontiers of Imagination) by Jules Verne
H.G. Wells beat Jules Verne to the punch with “The Invisible Man,” published in 1898. Probably inspired by Wells, Verne soon began writing his own novel about invisibility, which he called “The Secret of Wilhelm Storitz.” It was not published in France until after his death, but only after his son had badly mangled it with substantial editing and rewriting. Several of Verne's other late books suffered a similar fate.
Not until a decade ago was Verne's novel restored to the way he show more wrote it and, unlike so many other Verne novels in the past, given a decent English translation. The result is a book that, even if it came after the much more famous Wells book, is original and entertaining in its own way.
Henry Vidal travels from France to Hungary for the wedding of his brother, Marc, to a lovely young woman named Myra Roderich. Myra had previously spurned a proposal from Wilhelm Storitz, the son of a noted, if mysterious, Prussian scientist. Wilhelm has vowed to prevent the marriage of Marc to Myra from ever taking place.
As the wedding approaches, mysterious things begin to occur, such as disembodied voices and objects seemingly moving by themselves through the air. When it finally becomes clear that Wilhelm has found the secret of invisibility, panic overtakes not just the wedding party but the entire city. How can anyone be confident of privacy ever again? How can any secret be safe? How can Wilhelm be found, let alone captured, when he cannot even be seen? The story reaches it crisis point when Myra herself disappears.
Myra's importance to the plot is one reason this novel is considered noteworthy among Verne's work. Mostly he wrote books for boys, who had little interest in female characters. This novel appears to have been written more for an adult audience, especially as it contains romantic scenes and wedding details. Yet Verne perhaps does women no favors by making both Myra and her mother so fragile that they faint and must be carried to bed because of the shock caused by events.
I won't discuss Verne's dramatic ending, one of the things that his son had badly rewritten, except to say that it is exceptional. H.G. Wells may have wished he had thought of it. show less
