Joe R. Lansdale

I don't think anyone who reads my reviews is unfamiliar with my adoration of both Lansdale as an author, and his Hap & Leonard series in particular.

As per usual, I loved the story, laughed along with the jokes, and thrilled to the action. I will say I was pleased that Lansdale didn't see the need to put in an advertisement for his daughter's music in this one.

Thanks, Joe. I really appreciate that.

But Lansdale still possesses the ability to surprise me, and here, it came in the form of Hap's show more ruminations on getting older and his shifting loyalties from friends and action toward family and friends and surviving to live a longer life.

The other thing that impresses me with Hap & Leonard in a sea of stony-eyed, hard-hearted, all-in-a-day's-work literary killers is how the author lets his characters go through moments of bowel-loosening, hand-shaking, mind-quaking fear. You don't see that much in fiction, and it's really appreciated, as it truly makes Hap & Leonard human.

Non avevo mai letto nulla di Lansdale. Qualche giorno fa mi sono imbattuta in una discussione in cui si parlava di copertine brutte e qualcuno ha menzionato la copertina dell'edizione italiana di Tramonto e Polvere Quella virata in rosso sangue, di ispirazione Harmony. Diceva che non c'entrava nulla col romanzo. Così mi sono incuriosita, l'ho comprato e l'ho letto.

Leggendo Tramonto e polvere mi sono sentita a disagio per la gran parte del tempo.

Ho subito odiato la protagonista Sunset. La show more sua ingenua sicumera, il suo favolesco ottimismo, le sue pose da Perry Mason. Perché non mi sembra possibile che una donna spari in testa a suo marito nel momento in cui questo la sta stuprando e da lì a pochi giorni è già bell'e pronta a vestire i panni dello sceriffo e ad aprire le gambe al primo arrivato, il farabutto belloccio e pluriomicida. Non mi sembra credibile che la stessa donna incontri per la prima volta nella sua vita un tizio che le confessa di essere il granduomo che ha ingravidato sua madre e poi se l'è data a gambe, e dopo poche battute lo chiami già disinvoltamente "papà".

Ecco, ogni dettaglio di questo romanzo l'ho trovato permeato di questi particolari stridenti, sbagliati. I registri (sempre scherzosi a dispetto della criticità delle situazioni), il modo di agire dei personaggi (sempre inverosimili, inadeguati), che vanno a riempire un plot frusto, vecchio e stravecchio e prevedibile. Che noia. Un continuo stridere tra avvenimenti drammatici e reazioni simpatiche dei personaggi. Reazioni superficiali, reazioni così poco emotive che alla fine i personaggi ti sembrano dei pupazzi che si muovono su uno sfondo di cartone. Perché solo nel mondo dei pupazzi su uno sfondo di cartone succede che la figlia della protagonista Sunset, una ragazzina di 14 anni, abortisca, con l'aiuto di una fattucchiera, l'embrione con cui il farabutto belloccio e pluriomicida di cui sopra l'ha ingravidata subito prima di andare a letto anche con Sunset, e dopo qualche giorno dall'aborto sia pronta a un trasferimento lontano lontano col sorriso sulle labbra e la speranza nel futuro.

E insomma, terminato il libro penso che secondo me la copertina è proprio adatta. show less

Like many of Lansdale's books, it seems to have been written in about as long as it takes to read, but this time there is a real heart to the story. Dot's narration, brought to perfect life in the audiobook by Kasey Lansdale's narration, is that of a real person struggling with a few growing up problems, but otherwise displaying an admirable calm in the face of less than ideal circumstances. Except, when a boy tries to hold her hand, of course....

I definitely recommend seeking out the audiobook to enjoy this book to its fullest. Kasey Lansdale doesn't just read the story, she performs it. And she inhabits more than one of the characters. She's that good. show less

It is easy to see why this story won the Bram Stoker. It is a gem from a master. Devastating in its bleakness as it shows not only the desolated land left by a nuclear apocalypse but also the blighted landscape of the hearts and souls of those left behind to do perhaps nothing more than prolong the moment of their death. The first to die clearly are the lucky ones because what do the survivors do to fill the void of those who are gone? To make this disturbing story all the more unsettling show more the final evil facing mankind takes a form of beauty. show less
