This thread is for LT’ers or thingamabrarians, or members, or their designees, to post combining or separating problems with their books.
** If a book has been combined with a book that is extremely different from the original.
** If a book won’t combine with the other books just like it.
** There is a problem with the entry & it is just too overwhelming to deal with.

WHEN YOU POST:
Give us the TITLE & author, plus any other information you think we might need & please NUMBER them if you post more than one.
Example:
..Please combine:
#1: The story of the life of you
http://www.librarything.com/work/XXXXXX
http://www.librarything.com/work/YYYYYYYY
#2: The story of the life of everyone else
http://www.librarything.com/work/WWWWW
http://www.librarything.com/work/ZZZZZZZZ
** Please do not give us search pages or author pages.
Give us concrete & specific works to be combined, not groups of possibles, unless you have questions. Series pages can be helpful.
** You can ask us to look at a set of works to ask our opinions or ask if someone with a specific language or subject knowledge look at your request, but please be brief.
** Make your request easy for yourself & for the combiners who will help you.
Then you can just wait, “and someone will be with you shortly.”
Please, keep in mind this work is done by volunteers, not LT staff.
*** If you number multiple requests, it makes it easier if someone can only work on part of a request.
*** If you edit your post to add new items to be combined, please indicate that they are new by preceding with “ETA:” or “Edit:”.
*** Also, please indicate when a request has been "DONE".

Tim’s Guidelines for Proper Etiquette for contacting members about their book records:
“For this topic, I still feel strongly that I’d like to consider it bad form. Many others agree with me. But a few think I’m dictating and are angry about that. So, fine. Let’s just write some guidelines up. I propose that the guidelines be something along the lines of:
* Remember that LibraryThing is used for many different reasons. The way you use and enjoy the site is not necessarily the way others do.
* Be sensitive to how the member is using LibraryThing. Approach members who show no interest in the social side more cautiously.
* Try to provide helpful information and ask questions rather than dictating.
* If the user indicates displeasure at the request, let it drop.
* When in doubt, raise the issue in the Combiners! group before sending a message.”

Skittles’ note: I would like to add that we should ALWAYS use private comment when we absolutely must contact a LT’er, even when their response isn’t private.

Dr Mike’s (aka theapparatus) note:
If both works that need to be combine have more than 200 records, please post your request in this thread:

You need staff intervention to handle that request.

Can someone blow up http://www.librarything.com/work/88185 ? I see at least four different books all jumbled up on the editions page, plus some Cities (no author, no ISBN) which can at least be isolated from anything identifiable.
3tjsjohanna
#2 I took a look at it - maybe someone has already worked on it? All the different isbns listed were for the same book and the covers shown are all for the same book. I worked on some the works listed as possible combinations.

My page for this book http://www.librarything.com/work/5612709/book/82459089 says there are 7 members with it on LT. When I go to the author page http://www.librarything.com/author/ahlquistdale it says there are 62 LT members with it.
Can someone get those numbers to match up?
Thank you!

I have a feeling something is not quite right with The Hedge Knight by George R. R. Martin. There is one, a novella, and another, a graphic novel.
http://www.librarything.com/work/6187725 (this is supposed to be the graphic novel)
http://www.librarything.com/work/9766443 (this is the novella/short story)
Looking at the information at the graphic novel work, some editions seem to be non-graphic. I don't know how to find out what is what...

As this is my unpaid secondary account, I can't change primary authors, so can someone please combine:
http://www.librarything.com/work/5744092
http://www.librarything.com/work/11156447
http://www.librarything.com/work/7787809
I'm not sure about these two:
http://www.librarything.com/work/9526522 (listed as by Jonathan Cape?)
http://www.librarything.com/work/8773919 (LU was one of the authors of this book, as was Robert Frost, as per the book cover, but the review makes no sense; this is poetry from 1922, not 19th and 20th century poetry.)
As you can see from http://www.gutenberg.org/files/25880/25880-h/25880-h.htm , they didn't bother giving a single author for the work, thus the confusion.

Jonathan Cape is the British publisher of this at the time. It seems to be poetry considered recent in 1922, but not necessarily written in that year, in fact as several had been published in magazines and the book itself was published in 1922, most of them must be somewhat earlier.
My guess is that the review was written without reading the foreword. Much of the poetry has a 19th century feel to it.
Yes they should be combined, but I think not through the author page.

>34 supersidvicious: Just a note on that - this is a periodical series about travel destinations, and cities and countries can be repeated. Therefore it is important to be careful when combineing that the two works are really the same issue. For example, I own three Iceland issues:
http://www.librarything.com/work/5499143/summary/31153925
http://www.librarything.com/work/5499155/summary/31154036
http://www.librarything.com/work/5528863/summary/31358240
These aren't revisions, but totally different content. It looks as though the people working on the series have done a good job of keeping them separate. But adding in anything from the search would need special care.
Edited to add - I have added some of the Merian volumes from http://www.librarything.com/catalog.php?view=hahehei&deepsearch=Merian&c... to the series. This is fairly easy, if timecomsuming because of the edition date feature. However, I found one that had been incorrectly combined - the three different covers was a dead giveaway.

I ran into a problem with the Young Sherlock Holmes series. Several copies of books 2, 3, and 4 had combined into book 1. I got all of the copies separated out of book 1, but I'm having trouble combining the authorless copies of books 3 & 4 with the copies with authors. These still need to be combined to finish cleaning up the series:

1. Jane and the Nodding Mandarin by Eve Hanley http://www.librarything.com/work/12335299/book/83549804#
needs to be combined with
Jane and the Nodding Mandarin by "Henley" http://www.librarything.com/work/2268525

2. Henley's formulas for home and workshop by "Henley" http://www.librarything.com/work/661430

The Land That God Forgot: The Saga of Gen. George Patton's Desert ... by Brigadier General David C. Henley http://www.librarything.com/work/4623249

Anyone want to tackle The Tibetan Book of the Dead?
This is the biggest glop, with what looks like at least half a dozen different editions and abridgements:
http://www.librarything.com/work/71868/editions
I started separating out Evans-Wentz, but I'm afraid I don't have the time to finish (almost done, but there are now orphaned Evans-Wentz "zero" copies.)
I don't know whether it's worth it to dissect the work under "Francesca Freemantle" completely, but someone might know at least whether Shambhala Pocket Editions ought to be combined with their "Dragon" editions? I thought the former were tiny things, unlikely to hold the same material.

It seems someone has combined two different anthologies of Fernando Pessoa's poetry — Fernando Pessoa & Co. and A Little Larger than the Entire Universe.
http://www.librarything.com/work/67923
I haven't read the latter, but here's a quote from its Amazon page:
Eight years ago, Fernando Pessoa & Co., a 300-page volume of Richard Zenith's translations of Portugal's great modernist poet, was one of the events of the year in poetry. Fortunately, Pessoa (1888-1935) was so prolific that only four short poems reappear in Zenith's new 100-pages-longer selection.

90: Done. Given that this appears to be an anthology, I expect the different authors include some contributors. Please consider adding, confirming or correcting under "Add other authors" on the Main Page. Thank you.
91: Holy cow! I can do a bit of separating, but there's lots to be done -- editions other than English, generic "Selected Poems," etc. Also, I'm highly unsure where existing CK should go. All help will be appreciated!
ETA: It looks like ALL collections of Fernando Pessoa's writings may have been lumped, not just these two anthologies of poetry. Thus far, A Little Larger than the Entire Universe: Selected Poems and Always Astonished: Selected Prose are re-separated. Add: Gedichten; "Je ne suis personne" une anthologie, vers et proses; Fernando Pessoa & Co.: Selected Poems.

Add Selected Poems to my list at 92 above, and I'm done for the time being. (Actually, this last one may be a bit of a lump itself, including as it does variant Penguin editions, an Edinburgh Bilingual Library edition, etc.)
ETA: 93, done.

My proposal about Pessoa's poems: I'd keep the various Poemas, Poesias, Poems, Poesie etc. together, although they likely only partially overlap, simply because total separation would produce dozens of singletons.
On the other hand, I separated out the editions that have something recognisable in the title, like the anthology of Pessoa citations in Tabucchi.
Unfortunately, the separated titles are taking forever to reappear on the author page, meaning that a lot of connexions will be remade only with a delay...

with the main entry
http://www.librarything.com/work/1202863
OK, now looking at it, it seems that if you search for the title you'll find that someone has listed the book 10 times, changing the author to one of the contributors (which I understand when it's done with the corresponding story title as the work title, but as it is it's just confusing). Would it be best to merge all of them and just list all contributors in Other Authors?

For reference, it's often easier to use URLS ending with a Work number (e.g., ".../work/10391564" in your "good entry"), but without a specific Book number (".../book/84019296"). The first three URLs above lead to "private" books, which only the LT Member listing them can view. We can still get to the intended main Work by omitting the Book number, but it takes a bit of trouble, and not all LT Members may understand that.
Thanks!

This series needs some kind of combining or separating. It looks like what has happened is this. The original series consisted of 6 volumes. On re-issue it looks like some of the original volumes were either dropped or lumped together but I'm not sure. The original series are the following:
#1 http://www.librarything.com/work/12417988/book/84206241 - Prewar
#2 http://www.librarything.com/work/7951634/book/84206284 -Postwar
#3 http://www.librarything.com/work/7951634/book/84206391 -Standard Gauge
#4 http://www.librarything.com/work/7951634/book/84206511 -1970-1980
#5 http://www.librarything.com/work/7951634/book/84206557 -Archives
#6 http://www.librarything.com/work/7951646/book/84206618 -Advertising and Art
If you look at these you will see they are listed as duplicates and as various volumes depending on who has entered them.
The following seems to have the same problem. Again - the first series was 4 separate volumes I-IV
#1 http://www.librarything.com/work/8282315/book/81489141 - Terror from the Sky
#2 http://www.librarything.com/work/11350390/book/81489322 - Tragic Victorys

#4 http://www.librarything.com/work/2829454/book/81489413 - Wings of Fire

The book/work 'Stickning: personligt & handgjort' which I own and have entered is a Swedish translation of 'Knit: Handmade Style'. I have done my best (and I hope not my worst, when it comes to LT database integrity) to make these two works combinable, but so far without any luck.
Stickning: personligt & handgjort:
http://www.librarything.com/work/6373036
Knit: Handmade Style:
http://www.librarything.com/work/1905301
I am sad to say that the otherwise excellent source of information, the Swedish Royal Library (National Library of Sweden) may have misguided LT in this case. They have the book title entered as 'Sticka : mönster' with the title I use above entered as an alternate title, and they chose to name Diana Crossing as main author while LT use Janine Flew in this role. Link to their information on this work (available in English): http://libris.kb.se/bib/10665044?vw=full&tab3=full
I took the liberty of adding Janine as main author of the Swedish translation, keeping Diana as co-author, adding information about original title to the CK and so on, but LT will still not suggest a combination of the two.

Someone combined The Stolen White Elephant and The Stolen White Elephant and Other Detective Stories (http://www.librarything.com/work/177619/editions) (which is obvious, because they didn't fix the CK.)
There are:
copies of The Stolen White Elephant and Other Detective Stories (according to an Amazon review, this is The Stolen White Elephant, etc., Tom Sawyer, Detective, and A Double-Barreled Detective Story in one volume)
editions of just the story (of which I believe ISBN 1466203765 to be one, at 28 pages)
copies of The Stolen White Elephant, Etc.
various works just called The Stolen White Elephant
various foreign works
So there's at least three works here.

There are still lots of non-English language variants of Mark Twain's The Stolen White Elephant, The Stolen White Elephant and Other Detective Stories, The Stolen White Elephant, Etc., and maybe a few other (apparent) anthologies, for which I haven't found detailed contents; so they're out there as distinct Works with (hopefully) cautionary Disambiguation Notices. As far as I can see the problem is solved.
Now that it is, maybe it would be safe for me to change the main author back to what the National Library of Sweden uses, in case that will help newly registered books to "find" the right work to combine with.
Diana Crossing is still a non-productive author according to LT, compared to Janine Flew. Judging from the list of contributors (no real authors, just a list of the persons contributing knitting patterns) I can not tell who would have contributed the most, who should have the honour of being listed as the primary author at LT. (I could scan the relevant page of my Swedish edition, and make a quick and dirty translation if necessary.)

LT creates 0-copy editions for just that reason, so you don't should feel free to use whatever author makes sense to you.

>166 jadler:: @jadler, I can tell nothing about the correct, or even a "best," primary author for Knit: Handmade Style. Looking at the Editions page, most copies seem currently identified as being by Janine Flew. I might suggest looking at the "» Add/edit other authors (4 possible)" dialogue from the Main Page, and confirm, add or correct as much as you can there, based on what you know about the work thus far. FWIW, two Amazon records (linked to the Main Page by ISBN) also identify the author as Janine Flew, but two WorldCat records (also by ISBN) show Diana Crossing (or "Diana Crossing, et al."), and the third WorldCat record says "Jeanette Bakker, et al." -- just to muddy the waters, I suspect. :o)

#171 With the Knit book - I suspect that the editor, the contributors, etc. are all mixed up. Would not take anything Amazon says seriously. I ususally go with WorldCat as being more accurate but I've found some flakey stuff there also. Best bet is to ask someone who has the book to look at the title page and verso and go from there. A lot of work when, in this case, adding all the editors might just be good enough.

A few more of this periodical which need combining. Thanks.

Hi, these are the same work, however 10298868 is attributed to "Dalai Lama", which conventionally refers to the current (14th) Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, where the work above is by the 6th Dalai Lama, Tsangyang Gyatso. They need to be combined but without causing the 6th Dalai Lama to be combined with the 14th.
Is it possible?
