Happy New Year!
I'm Chelle and I'm happy to be back with the 75 group for my third time!
For those of you who don't know me I'm a newly married 30something female living in Nova Scotia, Canada. I read a ton (as is common on LT) and I'm very sporadic with what I read and jump from different genres. I'm very unreliable with writing reviews but I'm a big fan of reading everyone else's reviews!
I wish you all a very Happy and healthy 2013!

Hi Chelle! I love your lists for2012.
Is that picture what it looks like at the moment, or has it melted now?

Hi Kath! I ❤ Rickman :)
HI Cushla! Actually that's what it looked like last week but we are in the middle of a blizzard right now so there is A LOT more snow!

How very very beautiful it is, Chelle. Hope all your 2013 goals are met and passed!

Hi Chelle, love all the pictures and your goals are similar to mine - read what you own and don't get distracted! Love Alan Rickman and the quote.

Found you, Chelle! So glad that you brought Alan along - I just love that quote (and that man!). Looking forward to following you in the New Year! Wishing you and Nate (and Tempe and Jax) all that is fabulous in the New Year - may the journey be full of magic!
15dk_phoenix
Oooer, I do love the sight of the Atlantic in the winter... and honestly, that Alan Rickman graphic makes me want to run downstairs and read all the HPs again immediately... *ponders*
17Kirconnell
Lurking. How could I not with such an impressive picture and book list.

Checking in on the (first of many, I am sure!) 2013 thread. Happy New Year, Chelle!

YAY.. I found your new thread.. :) Welcome back this year Chelle..

Hi Chelle! Love the snowy picture up top. We don't get much here in Oregon, and I lived in Minnesota for a long time, so I miss the white stuff. Enjoy! Oh, and love your series list. I had no idea I was so behind on the Alex Cross one...18! Oh my! I best get going....LOL.

Hi Chelle, just logging into your new thread my dear, i also love Mr Cross.

Happy New Year Chelle. :)
40ChelleBearss

Thanks for visiting me everyone and hope everyone had a safe and happy New Year!
Not surprisingly I was in bed by 11 and missed ringing in the new year! Nate (hubby) was working as well as some of my friends so I decided to stay home with the pups. We shared some yummy food and I read a good book and then went to bed when I got sleepy! I have to work tonight (yay double time!).
Hello and welcome to my thread for 2013 Richard, Kerry, Paul, Mamie, Bonnie, Doc, Faith, Rhian, Velma, Susan, Stasia, Kerri, Diana, Monica, Kim, John, Katie, Amy, Ellen, Lori, Nancy, Paul, Anne, Velma, Kath, Calm, Morphy, Nora, Lynda & Monica!
I'll be spending part of my morning visiting and starring threads and then I have to go shovel!
I got my truck stuck in the snow yesterday on my way to work. Apparently even with 4wheel drive we have too much snow to drive over. Today Nate and I are going to try and tackle the driveway. I hope it stops snowing soon!!!
41drachenbraut23
Hello Chelle, just another one who wants to wish you a wonderful 2013! Starred you as well :)
I wish your good luck with the snow! Wow, you must have *lots and lots* of snow indeed, if you got stuck with your truck.

Hi Chelle. Good luck with getting the truck out of the snow - how much is there?
43ChelleBearss
Thanks Bianca!
Hi Cushla!
It's not so much how much snow we've gotten, it's more that the wind has blown it into some interesting piles!
Yesterday my laneway looked bare when I when to leave and then I realized that the end of my laneway had a huge drift, partially from the wind and partially from the snowplow that did the highway. I tried to drive over it and not surprisingly I got stuck. Nate and a plow drive had to push me out, whoops ;-)
This is the view from my kitchen door today

We might have gotten a foot over the last week. But from the heavy winds last night my driveway has some very high piles. Nate and I will try and tackle those piles when he wakes up from nightshift sleep.

Hi Chelle! I found you!! I love the Alan Rickman picture and I saved it to my computer for possible future use. You have some great reads from 2012. I too am trying to read the books I own more then anything else.
45msf59
Happy New Year, Chelle! Love the photo of the snow! No snow here yet and I'm not complaining. I think we have only received an inch or so. Very unusual.
My daughter just finished Rebel heart. She was very disappointed. I hope it works better for you. I'll read it for FF.

I know you got stuck (oops!), but I do miss a good snowfall on Christmas. We had a dusting fall, but nothing stuck. Green grass today, but cold. Good luck!

Beautiful! We were very glad to have a White Christmas -- it used to be a given here in Colorado, but not so much anymore. Thanks for sharing the photo!

Hi Chelle! Nice new thread for the new year (of which I wish you a happy one!).
Snow drifts are the blurst. Wishing you and Nate luck with the snow removal efforts. And that you don't have to do it all over again tomorrow. :)

Happy new year Chelle. One year, we had so much snow I decided to take the quick way out of shoveling the front steps ... I boiled a couple of pots of water and just poured it all over the steps .. instant meltage! I did put salt down after though, to stop the water later from freezing.
52lunacat
I always love that Alan Rickman quote. The same applies for me. And I love pictures of snow when it looks as unblemished and perfectly pure as that. However, I'm still glad I don't live where there is a lot of it. Too much work for me!
53ronincats
I'm glad you brought the Alan Rickman graphic along--I love it so. And great pictures of your snow--good thoughts coming your way re: snow removal!
55LovingLit
>43 ChelleBearss: I love that shot! Talk about gorgeous, and I guess you get sick of hearing that and having to go about in snow all day. Sorry, but snow is so rare here, it is always an event!
How are you, Nate and the dogs? It seems you had a pretty great reading year last year, think you can top it this year? I dont hold great hopes in topping my year, I had a fantastic reading year in 2012. So many great books- thank goodness there are so many more to come.

Hi, Chelle! Happy New Year! Can't match that snowy loveliness here. We have a little, but mainly it's a cold one, down around 1 degree with the wind chill.
57lkernagh
Snow drifts.... yes, I remember those from my Alberta prairie days. Real pain in the arse to shovel/deal with when you live in a city with a 'clear your sidewalks' bylaw and Mother Nature has her own ideas of when and where she wants to pile the snow. ;-)
Happy times. Do the dogs enjoy playing in all the snow? We had cats, so it was always entertaining/annoying how they would insist on being let out but once the door was open and they encountered the "white stuff" it was a lot of nose sniffing, paw shaking and little if any forward movement to jump out and into the snow scene displayed before them.

ARG!! Have I mentioned lately how much I dislike snow?!? After spending time this afternoon clearing my laneway the wind has blown a ton back and now I'm stuck again!! Nate will have to deal with it tomorrow. At least I made it all the way into the laneway before I got stuck. It's too late and it's too cold for me to care tonight (it's midnight and -11c!)
44 Hi Monica! Yes reading from our shelves seems to be a big challenge for some us! Nate always bugs me about buying new books when I have 60something unread, but I know that is nothing compared to the TBR piles of some LT'ers!
45 Happy New Year Mark! I wouldn't be complaining if I were you! I'd love to only have a bit of snow.
I liked Rebel Heart quite a bit. It worked for me. The first one is better though
46 HI Kim! I wanted a white Christmas .... Christmas is over now, so the snow can melt anytime now ;-0
47 Thanks Anne! I do find it beautiful when I don't have to drive in it
48/49 Happy new Year Reba & Nick!!
50 Happy new Year Micky! I'm sure you can relate to the snow problems, I guess Alberta probably has it just as bad (or worse!)
51 Hi Caro! That's a pretty good idea! I'd need a lot of water for our laneway though!! (we can fit about 8 cars in it...) I think a better idea would be for me just to stay home on my couch with a book ... this whole working for a living things seem overrated ;)
52 Hi Jenny! It is a lot of work!! I have a snow blower but the snow was so wet and heavy it was too much for my little machine. I'm going to make Nate get at it again with a shovel tomorrow. I'm tired of getting stuck!
53 Thanks Roni! I adore Rickman and plan on keeping him around on my threads for a while
54 Thanks Julia! Should have my first book done tomorrow night
55 Thanks Megan! I sometimes like snow. Nate and I went to a lodge a few years back and spent a weekend snowshoeing and skating and it was great. But I was dressed properly in a snowsuit and there was alcoholic hot chocolate at the end of the day! It's pretty but I want to hibernate all winter!
I'd like to hit 130 next year. My goal this year had been 150 but I slowed down quite a bit after the wedding. Hopefully I will be more consistent this year
56 Yikes Joe, 1degree farenheit? That's about -17c. That's a tad colder than here. We are at about -11c tonight (or 11f I think) Chilly either way!!
57 haha Lori my cat dislikes the snow too! She always cries at the door in the good weather and then in the winter if I open the door she dips her paw out, shakes it and doesn't cry again at the door for many months!
The dogs love it!! They are playing and rolling in it. The don't like it when it's super cold like tonight, but during the day they don't want to come back inside!

Sigh. Alan Rickman is so hunky.
We haven't any more snow since the first 14 inches, but we came home yesterday to those 14 inches still hanging around - it hasn't been warm enough for it to melt much at all.

That photo's beautiful but I would be going a bit crazy if I had done all that work getting rid of the snow then got stuck again when the wind blew. And -11 at midnight - ow!

Hi Chelle, Happy New Year. Aren't you just loving the weather we're having. I shovelled & shovelled & shovelled some more only to have it all drift back in. Le sigh!
62MickyFine
We have had a decent pack of snow that's stuck around since before Halloween. But it's actually been weirdly warm here the past couple of days. We hit 2C here today. O_o

Happy New Year, Chelle! Dropping a star! Cold here - that means about O Celcius! Why, we've hit the freezing mark overnight! :)

First book of the year finished!!

1) The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest by Stieg Larsson
Read for 75 Books Challenge for 2013,
2013 Category Challenge: Off my shelves!!
(4*)
I really, really enjoyed this series!!
I had tried on two previous attempts to get into the first book and I kept getting stuck about 30 pages in. There is a portion where one character is giving background on a scandal and it was incredibly dull and I kept getting bored and rereading the same sentence over and over until I ended up putting the book down
Finally I was able to pick it up again and was in the right frame of mind to stick through that one dull part and I am so happy that I did. I read all three books in the last week and I couldn't put them down. My husband felt neglected because I wanted to read these books and do nothing else.
highly recommended!
First "Pearl'ed" novel

The Coffin Dancer by Jeffery Deaver
I'm not sure why I didn't like this one. Perhaps it's because I just finished three amazing books and this one doesn't fit the standard that I just experienced.
I have read the previous Lincoln Rhyme book The Bone Collector and remember enjoying it. I'll give this one another chance at a later date...

Chelle, delighted you enjoyed the Millennium Trilogy so much! I also thought it was fabulous.
67kiwiflowa
Hi Chelle, Happy New Year :) I still haven't read the millenium trilogy. When I do I'll remember to push through the beginning part.
68ChelleBearss
Morning everyone! It's another chilly, snowy day here and I woke up with a case of terrible hiccups! I wish I knew what caused them. Nate always makes fun of me because when I hiccups it's like my whole body gets in on it. It's really quite dramatic! I am hoping they go away soon as I keep scaring the dogs ;-0
59) Amber, hunky? Really? I adore him but I don't think he fits into my version of hunky. To each their own though right! I think I am overdue for a Harry Potter reread though!
60) Yes Cushla, winter makes me a little crazy too! I am trying to hibernate but I keep having to leave the house for work, sheesh! I need to find a job where I can work during the warm seasons and bank a ton of money so that I can stay at home all winter... wonder if such a job exists?
61) Hi Dee! What part of Canada are you in? It's snowing big fat snowflakes here today and the dogs want to play in it really bad. I wish I had a portion of our yard fenced in for them so I didn't have to go outside with them!
62) Oh Micky I am jealous of your temps! It's -11 again this morning. I remember in early December shoveling the snow while wearing a light jacket and mits and yesterday I had to get all decked out in my heavy snowsuit and balaclava and I still felt frozen when I came back inside! Enjoy your warmer weather!
63) Deb I am double jealous of you! I'd rather have warm rain than snow right now! At least I have a good book and no reason to leave my mountain top abode today!
64) Thanks Nancy! I wish I hadn't judged it so harsh before! I should have at least gave it the 50 pages that Pearl suggests, then I would have ended up sticking with it!
65) Thanks Rhonda, you can have all my snow if you like :)
66) Hi Lisa! Yes when you start the first one push through the part where Mikael is on the boat listening to the story. It's worth it in the end but I found that part very dull.

I really enjoyed the Stieg Larsson series, too, Chelle. I'm glad you had a good time with it.
71RebaRelishesReading
I know this is a contrary opinion but, if for no other reason than to stimulate discussion, I'll say that I read Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and IMHO it alternated between disgustingly violent and deadly dull. I stuck it out to the end but will not be reading the other two.
72katiekrug
Reba, I sort of agree. Violence doesn't bother me but there were some incredibly dull parts. I finished the book and overall thought it was pretty good but I have not felt compelled to pick up the second one.
73lunacat
Personally, I think humans should have evolved by now to be able to hibernate in the winter. Think about it - the moment ice or snow hits, we play a little bit, then make sure we're all stocked up for winter and retreat to our beds to sleep, doze or read. Our bodies therefore would evolved to only require the basic necessities once a day, so that's when we need to get up..........grab a shower, go to the bathroom, get a bit of food, go back to sleep.
If it works for bears and squirrels, we should be able to manage it.

Congrats on finishing your first read of the year!

69 Happy New Year Chèli! Hope you have a great 2013!
70 Thanks Joe! I've had those books on my shelves for a couple years now and I'm glad that I finally read them! Glad to see you enjoyed them too :)
71 Hi Reba :) That's the great thing about LT, we can all talk about why we loved or hated a book and no one judges! I thought that there was quite a bit of violence, but personally I didn't think it was overdone. It was a big book and there were a couple dull spots, but overall I really enjoyed it and couldn't wait to read the second and third
72 Hi Katie. Do you think you will end up reading the second book?
73 Jenny I like your thinking! I think that quite possibly I was a bear in another life because I feel an overwhelming urge to hibernate this week!
74 Hi Micky! Ya, -11 isn't always that cold but unfortunately with being so close to the ocean it's a very wet cold and the wind has been brutal lately. Tonight feels very mild though and I managed to go outside with a hoodie and pj pants, but there is no wind tonight so that helps.

Next time you get the serious hiccups, eat a spoonful of sugar - it's so absolutely disgusting that you completely forget about the hiccups and they stop. Seriously.
I had a professor in grad school who had an excellent cure for his students' hiccups. When someone started with them in class, he would pull out his wallet as he lectured, walk over to the student, pull out a $20 bill, slap it on the table in front of them and tell them that they could have it if they hiccuped one more time. I saw him do it a handful of times and he never lost the money.

Hi Chelle, Glad to see your first read of 2013 was a winner. I have that one on my shelf but I've no idea when I'll get around to it.
Around here, Cleveland, Ohio, many people put up snow fences to catch the snow drift and keep their driveways a little clearer. Do you have those available to you in NS?

And around here, where our first frost drifts, we laugh at snow fences. Or the lack of performance out of them. Get yourself a big, snowblower Chelle. Then you won't have any worries.
79curlysue
I finally made it here Chelle!
I still need to get to The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest I did enjoy the first two so I'm happy to hear the third one is just as good :)
I like snow but your snow just looks obnoxious ;)

I'm not sure if I'll read it or not, Chelle. Certainly not anytime soon, only because I have so many other books I really want to get to!
81JechtShot
Hi Chelle, I think I remember having mixed feelings on The Coffin Dancer when I read it a few years back. It was an okay story, but not as enjoyable as the The Bone Collector. I believe I read one book further in the series and lost interest. First two books in the Millennium Trilogy were great, but for some reason I haven't read the third one yet. Thanks for the reminder!
82richardderus
Hi Chelle, huffing through as I deasphyxiate from damn near causing a kitchen fire by being stupid.

Hi Chelle, I finally found your thread. Happy New Year to you! If I could take some of that snow off your hands, I would!
84vancouverdeb
Chelle, I'll confess here and now that I never any of Stieg Larsson's trilogy. I tried hard to get into the first of the books, but could never get that far. I was so delighted when the Norwegian Film version hit the theatres here. Hubby and I don't mind subtitles and I think I enjoyed them more as movies than the books. Long and complex!
85DorsVenabili
#64 - Hi Chelle! I'm glad you enjoyed the Larsson. I now wish I would have read the series, but I've seen the first two movies and know what happens, so it would a bit silly to read the books, as the suspense is eliminated. I suppose I still could though.
86lunacat
Personally I think I was a cat in another life - I like my independence, can change my mind for no apparent reason, but also like to sleep for 22 hrs a day.

>76 scaifea: Love the story about the hiccups! Sometimes I get them so bad, I bet I would have won the $20.
88ChelleBearss
76 haha Amber I would for sure win the money! There are days that I get the hiccups for hours!
I've tried a ton of different things and Nate has even tried to scare me and none of them have worked. I'll try the sugar thing next time I get them.
77 Hi Lynda! I've seen some of those fences but not very many around here. They would be handy on some of the roads that have a lot of farm fields as the wind blows the snow off the fields into the road. There are some pretty big drifts around here. Seems like the plows have been going nonstop for a week now!
I wish that we could afford to do something like that fence, or even to pay for someone to plow. Oh well, maybe next year
78 Hi Bonnie! Our sad little snowblower is a hand-me-down and it works pretty good when the snow is light and fluffy. The heavy wet stuff that we got last week is too much for our machine. Oh well, Nate is getting some good exercise!
Our laneway is almost clear (one side needs work but we don't need to use that side). Thankfully the wind has died down a bit and the snow isn't blowing quite as much as a few days ago. It's actually kind of pretty today
79 haha Kara you are so right, obnoxious is the perfect word for it!!
80 I can understand that Katie, so many books and not enough time!
81 Hi Nick! I must go find your thread!
I won't be continuing with the Lincolm Rhyme series. I have enough on the go and that one just didn't grab me.
82 Richard what have you done? I guess I better pop by your thread and make sure you haven't burned the house down!
83 Happy new year Anne! I'd love it if you could take some of my snow! I have more than enough to share!
84 Hi Deb! I wonder if you put the first book down around the same place that I did? I'm glad I went back to it but I can see why not everyone would. It frustrated me that I had bought the first two books and not read them so I needed to give it one more shot
85 Hi Kerri! I think the books will always be better than the movies. These were some pretty big books too so not sure how much they might have missed?
86 haha Jenny, a cat would be as nice as a bear I suppose! Either way we would get to sleep and stay out of the snow!
87 Don't hiccups suck Morphy!

Ha! I just realized that I just left a huge rant over on Melissa's thread about how much I hate unsolicited advice, and here I've gone and left you some about the sugar! My excuse is that I was mostly joking about the sugar, because it is a completely disgusting thing to do (and you'd think it would be amazing - it's *sugar*, after all), although it does indeed work and just for that reason, I think (that it's so shockingly gross that you completely forgot that you had the hiccups).
90lunacat
The sugar thing definitely works for me, although I don't find it disgusting as I have a very sweet tooth.
Another old wives tale that has helped is vinegar for indigestion/heartburn. Sounds ridiculous but usually helps more than the over the counter remedies!

Hi Chelle--Envying you the look of snow but not the cold or the work! Off to take my oldest back down to college today. Stayed up till 2 last night reading Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail. It was quite good... obviously! I still have the third in the Larson series to go. Have a great day.

About the only thing I found that works for me for hiccups is a bunch of very small sips of water in a row.

Re: hiccups. My very last resort is The Fingernail Game. You take your two index finger and point them at each other and try to get the nails as close to each other as possible without actually touching. I think it's the concentration that takes your mind off the hiccups and allows your body to relax, thus ending the hiccups.
I know, it sounds weird. But it usually works for me, but only if I try everything else first.

Hi Chelle, I finally found you and attached your star. Your snow is beautiful, but I sure wouldn't want to drive in it....or get stuck in it. Do the dogs love it? I have my grand dog for a few days. I'd love to see Lucky and Cassie scampering in the snow. We have it in the forecast for tomorrow morning.
I couldn't get into the first Stieg Larsson book, but loved the second and third ones. I saw the Scandi version of all three movies, too. The first one filled me in enough on the story so I didn't miss reading the book.
Happy New Year!

Hi Chelle!
Finally made it to your thread.
Beautiful pictures of your snow. Anytime you want to send it here, you know I will take it. Sorry about all the problems you are getting stuck with. Didn't you have tons of snow in Ontario (?) or where it was you came from?
Stay warm, read a lot, and enjoy the new year in your new home :-)

Chelle - I hate snow too, my tubes hate it so much they close up on me in protest. Malaysia has no snow. Yippee!
Apparently hiccoughs are a matter of proper breathing. Try regular deep breathing exercise and the problem should abate. SWMBO's remedy.

What an adorable picture. Our dog, Maia, will pop her head over my book and sometimes the computer screen. "Whatcha doin'?"

Awww, bless her. Did you humour her and give her love, or simply tell her that NOTHING gets in the way of reading?
My cats like to lie on my laptop keyboard when they think I've spent too much time online, or on the book if I'm not paying attention to them. They will also chew the corners of my books........quite a few have little holes in them. Fingers crossed Tempe sticks to simply looking doleful and gorgeously cute!

Aww, sweet pup... my parrot tries to chew on the edges of my books while I read if I don't pay close enough attention to him... I've become an expert at scratching his head with one hand while holding & turning pages with the other... haha.

Awe Chelle, love the adorable pic of Tempe, that is something my Angel would do and does at times. :) Makes me wanna reach through the puter and pet her precious little face.. :)
Like the reviews of the Steig Larson books however I just could not get into them. I have all three and have tried on a couple occasions to start reading the first one and just cannot get past the first 50 pages or so.. I even tried watching the first movie.. Subtitles YUCKY.. So alas I will probably resort to having the books in my collection until I give them away to someone who may read them.

89 haha Amber, that's ok I don't mind advice. Thankfully my hiccups haven't come back since I posted about them but when they do I will remember your sugar trick!
90 Oh Jenny I dislike vinegar very much so I think I would rather have the heartburn than to drink some vinegar!
91 HI Kim! Good luck in school to your kiddies!
I loved Wild! I couldn't even imagine doing what she did! I would probably give up after the first blister arrived :-p
92 Hi Morphy! I've heard some people say take a sip of water upside down is supposed to work, but I end up spilling it
93 Thanks Mamie! Hope you have a great weekend too!
94 Interesting Katie, so the theme seems to be focusing on something very hard and forgetting about the fact that you have hiccups. I wonder what causes them?
95 Amber that does sound unpleasant, although you would think a spoonful of sugar would be great. Didn't Mary Poppins sing about that?
96 HI Donna! Yes the dogs love the snow and are driving me crazy wanting to be outside all day. The snow at the back of our property is very deep and Tempe actually sinks into it. She comes out looking like a pupcicle and then spends a good amount of time trying to pick off the snow chunks that stick to her little legs.
97 HI TJ, welcome to my thread :) I really enjoyed all three Larsson books.

99 Hi Cee! You are welcome to take as much of my snow as you would like!
We did have snow in southwestern Ontario, and sometimes quite a bit. But we didn't get this wind and the snow usually stayed where it landed. The snow here is very wet and heavy so my sad little snowblower can't handle it and the wind pushes it from the fields into my yard. We will get the laneway clear from a recent snow and then get more blown in. Some parts of my laneway had two feet of snow because of the wind. It's frusting me.
Sorry for the snow rant! It is very pretty here even if the snow annoys me :)
100 Hi Paul! I wouldn't imagine that Malasia would have snow, isn't it very hot all year round?
Happy weekend to you!
101 I know Amber, she is pretty adorable when she is being a suck!
102 Thanks Julia, we like her :)
103 Thanks Kath! I am hoping the hiccups don't come back for quite a while!
104 haha Morphy, sounds pretty cute!
105 Jenny, Tempe got some cuddles after I took the photo. She is a terrible suck and when she sleeps near someone she has to be touching. So she fell asleep after that photo with her head and paws in my lap. Makes holding the heavy book (940pg) quite awkward!
Neither of my dogs are book chewers, thankfully, but Tempe is a licker! I have dog tongue marks on quite a few books now
106 Oh for sure Morphy! She gets tons of cuddles
107 ha Faith, that's pretty cute! Does your parrot have free roaming privileges in your home?
108 Thanks Katie!
109 Hi Monica! I haven't seen the movies yet but I think Nate would enjoy them so I hope to watch them with him soon. Neither of us mind subtitles (as long as I wear my glasses lol)
You probably stopped reading the first one around the same spot as I did. An editor should have picked up on how dry the first portion was.

2) Winter of the World by Ken Follett
Read for 75 Books Challenge for 2013,
2013 Category Challenge: Series & Sequels
3.5*
I am such a big fan of this series which always seems to surprise me because I don't have a political bone in my body. I loved the first book which was a fictional telling of five families from different countries and castes during the time during and after WWI. Book two in the trilogy follows the next generation of those families during WWII.
Unfortunately my knowledge of both these times in history is quite poor so I wouldn't be able to pick out the difference between the actual historical facts and the fiction that Follett weaves together, but he does it in a way that, to me, flows more like fiction than fact.
I probably would have given this novel a higher star rating but I felt it was way too long. 940 pages probably could have been skimmed down by at least a hundred, although it didn't feel like it dragged too much. Overall a very decent and enjoyable read, but a time commitment!
116RebaRelishesReading
I've never read anything by Follett but seem to come across him almost every day lately. I should try one some time -- but 940 pages...WOW

I'm almost halfway through Fall of Giants & I'm really enjoying it. Like you, I don't know enough of the history to know which part is true history & which part is Follett's creation.

Hi Chelle, I'm a little late to the party but I seem to have fallen way behind when I went away at Christmas. Looks like you are reading big, thick books that are so lovely to curl up with in the winter. Tempe is adorable and anyone would be hard pressed not to stop whatever they were doing and give her a hug!
I don't envy you the snow, I am quite contented to look out the window and see green grass. So far (fingers crossed) we haven't had any of the white stuff this year.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon
Read for 75 Books Challenge for 2013,
2013 Category Challenge: 1001 Books to read before you die
1001 Books to read before you die
3.5*
Christoper is 15 years old and suffers from something similar to Asperger's Syndrom or Autism and he describes himself as "a mathematician with some behavioral difficulties". He is a fan of Sherlock Holmes and when a dog is killed in his neighbourhood he decides to investigate and solve the mystery of "Who killed Wellington?". It is told in first person by Christopher as he is writing a book of his investigation and the drama that occurs because of his investigation.
This a very strange book and completely different than anything I have read before. I read it in one sitting and felt very drawn to Christopher, but I can't say that I would recommend this book. It definitely isn't for everyone.

112 Thanks John! It's been a quiet day here. Nate has been playing video games and I've been reading :)
113 Thanks Calm, she is sweet most of the time.
114 haha Joe, thanks for taking my side ...
116 Hi Reba! Follett writes thrillers and historical fiction so he does have quite a bit to choose from. I haven't read any of his thrillers yet, but I have read his historical fiction and love them. This latest one is part of a trilogy (and the last isn't written yet). I recommend Pillars of the Earth and the sequal World Without End. I loved them
117 Thanks Megan! I get some good shots of the pooches sometimes :)
118 Hi Dee! I really should know more about the world wars as I was supposed to study them in school but history wasn't really my forte...
119 Thanks Micky! I did enjoy it, just wish it wasn't so heavy!
120 Hi Judy! Yes she is quite cute and she knows it!
I actually broke down today and paid a fella from down the road to plow the laneway. Best $30 I've ever spent!

My daughter-in-law had left a copy of Pillars of the Earth in the guest room when we were there for Christmas. I didn't have time to look at it except to notice that it is big, very big. I don't know why I let huge books intimidate me but I do. I've never read Mitchner, for example, because they're all such tomes. Having the sae problem with Follett. It will be historical fiction that I choose, however, when I do get up the courage.

Chelle, I'm a bit behind but wanted to say that the view out your window on New Years Day was lovely! And that picture of Tempe is remarkable. Calendar-worthy (you know, the new calendar that will be "Books and Dogs").
Good reading happening at your house, as well.

Hmmm my sister has given me a copy of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime. I think if she rated books by stars, it would be 5 for her. I think given your rating, I will leave it in the TBR pile a little longer! :) Thanks Chelle!
128ChelleBearss
HI Reba. Don't let the length of Follett's book intimidate you as they aren't overly hard to read, just long. It's not like reading a 700 page Dickens novel that takes forever to read, these ones flow nicely and are not difficult reads. It only took me three days to read Follett's book.
HI Ellen! I would totally buy your books and dogs calendar!
Stasia your snow is in the mail .... it's might just be water when it arrives though...
Hi Deb. I'm not sure if you would enjoy that one. I know you like your literary fiction and this one reads as if a child wrote it. It's a tad gimmicky. I ended up enjoying it by the end but during the beginning I wasn't sure if I would end up finishing it.

Glad you enjoyed Winter of the World, Chelle. I read Fall of Giants over Christmas and I have Winter of the World on the Kindle waiting for me. I found Fall of Giants quite hard to hold open, and hopeless to read in bed, so I sympathise with book 2 being even longer!
131drachenbraut23
Hi Chelle - great review of Winter of the World for some reason that series didn' appeal to me that much. However, I loved the Knightsbridge series.
Interesting review on The curious incident..... I have got this book already for ages on my kindle.
Wish you a lovely Sunday!

I'm the same as Bianca, enjoyed the Knightsbridge series as good, entertaining reading, if not the MOST believable books I've ever read. I have Fall of Giants on my shelves at the moment but something seems to be holding me back picking it up. Hopefully I'll get to it this year though.

Hi Chelle, glad you enjoyed the Follett, i have both of these on the TBR pile, i have read a couple of his earlier books and quite enjoyed them. Hope you are having a lovely sunday, we have had a good one with all the family over for lunch and our gorgeous granddaughter and step granddaughter causing lots of laughter all afternoon.
134MickyFine
>122 ChelleBearss: It definitely is a unique book, Chelle. I had a similar reading experience with this one as I also got through it in a day or two. Glad the style worked for you. :)
135EBT1002
I agree that The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime is a bit "gimicky" but I also think it does a good job of giving voice to someone "on the spectrum." For that reason alone, I recommend it (to Deb, since you already read it, Chelle!). I read it before I discovered LT so I don't know how many stars I would have given it. Four, perhaps?
136RebaRelishesReading
OK -- I'm going straight from here to put Pillars of the Earth onto my Kindle. Will read it while travelling this spring.

Great reading, Chelle, and I love the pic of Tempe! I am here to sympathize with you and the winter weather you are experiencing in the east coast. My first couple of years on Vancouver Island were an eye-opener to the different type of winter the coastal regions experience from the cold, dry winters of the prairies. If it ever hit -11'C here in Victoria, I would be indoors huddled by any heat source with every blanket in the house wrapped around me - humidity and the cold just sinks right into your bones. Because of this, my winter outerwear - which used to be wool or downfill jackets - is now Arctic fleece beneath a Gortex performance shell.

Hi friends!
Nate and I had a very lazy Sunday and we relaxed and watched movies and I got to read a bit. But we also had another snow storm and had a few hours of shoveling to do. We got a few inches overnight as well and Nate is working today so I'll be shoveling on my own today :(
I got some nice pictures of the pups during the storm as well. I'll share two of my faves
Hope everyone is having a great Monday!

129 Ok ok Mark, no need to twist my arm! I'll add dog stars to the wishlist :) (eta I am second in line at the library for it now :)
130 Hi Susan. Gotta love ereaders for when you want to read a huge book eh!
I actually love hardcovers books because they flop open in my lap. A huge book like that in paperback would kill my hands.
131 Hi Bianca. I'm loving the series but I can understand why it wouldn't appeal to everyone. I'd like to go back and read one of his thrillers one day, eventually ....
132 Pick it up Jenny, Pick it up!! (Gentle nudge for you ...)
133 Hi John! Glad to see you had a nice time with your grand kiddies! It's always nice to have little voices laughing in the house!
134 HI Micky! It almost didn't work but it's such a small book that I stuck with it longer than I normally would have. By the end I found I was enjoying it though
135 Hi Ellen! I agree with you that it does give voice to the type of character that does not normally get a voice. Haddon did win prizes for this novel and it was well done, but at the same time I'm not sure I enjoy reading books written in this style. It was well done though so that's why I gave it the star rating that I did. I think you enjoyed it a tad more than me though :)
136 yay! Glad I could peer pressure you Reba, hehe :)
137 Monday smooch for RD!
138 ha Lori, yes I could really use an Arctic fleece right now! As it is I've been wearing Nate's military long johns underneath my fleece pants and his military balaclava when I go out to shovel! It's the only way to stay warm in the wet cold!
Nate came in from shoveling yesterday and his eyelashes (which are quite long) were completely white! He looked like old man winter, it was pretty cute :)

Fabulous pictures. I love Tempe's face in them. But then she's adorable anyway. And who could resist Jax. You can tell their different characters as well, the way he is staring off into the distance daydreaming, and she is so focused on you.
Shame about the extra snow though.

Love the dogs and snow pictures.
142susanj67
I love the dogs in the snow too :-) I saw a long trailer last night on TV for something that looked exciting, and it turned out to be World Without End, which starts here in the UK next weekend. So Follett fans have that to look out for.
143rosalita
I think that's a very perceptive observation, lunacat! Jax is secure in his home, but Tempe looks a bit wary still that she might lose this dream home she's landed in. She's keeping a close eye on Chelle to make sure she doesn't run away. :-)
144phebj
Hi Chelle, you take great pictures of your dogs. I don't think that's easy to do either. I especially like the first one of two them with all the snowflakes. Hope you like winter because it looks like you're immersed in it!
145-Cee-
Some people just seem to be naturals with a camera - and you are certainly one of them, Chelle. Nice job.
I LOVE the Tempe picture (way up there) and the snow dogs are awesome!
Will Tempe be getting anywhere near the size of Jax? He is so handsome - but Tempe you just want to scoop up and hug, hug, hug!
oh - and sorry about more snow... but it is beauteous :-)

Love the pics of the pups Chelle they are so adorable. I just wanna reach through and snuggle with both of them each time you show a pic of them.. I hope your shoveling went well I know about that we had some here in PA but now we are supposed to have a record breaking 50 degrees Fahrenheit here in the next day or so.. So we will have MUD MUD MUD and my Miss Angel will be getting her feet wiped off when she comes in the house..
148Berly
Love the puppies, and the snow. I think I gave The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime a four as well. I liked the voice. Carry on.
149kiwiflowa
ooo cute puppies!
I bought my Mum Winter of the World for her birthday as she loved the first one. I'm going to read the series too but as e-books as I don't fancy carrying around the mammoth tome that it is.

Wonderful puppy pics!!
I got a galley of the first book in this Follett series, but it's so massive to cart around that I never even opened it. That will have to change this year... I do know a lot of the history, so I'm encouraged by your comments, and may try to get going on #1 sooner rather than later. That said, he really messed around with the history for his cathedral books, so I have been more than a little wary. I generally have preferred Follett when he has stuck to his traditional thriller genre books.
Speaking of which, when will they release Frederick Forsyth's novels for Kindle?? Grrr. Some of them are really very good, seamlessly blending history and thriller.
LOL Re Alan Rickman image/quote. I remember a #of years ago being in a group that had dinner with him and Lindsay Duncan while they were on Broadway. We walked up 6th Ave to the restaurant and all of a sudden a young woman jumped right in front of him, stuck her index finger in his face and screamed "DIE HARD!" Trying to get away, he nearly ended up flattened by traffic and it took three of us to get the woman out of the way and two of us to convince him to keep going. It was rather funny walking into a restaurant - the group was about 8 or 9 of us -- and watching everyone's head turn. That really hasn't happened before or since -- quite bizarre. Made me VERY glad I'm not a celeb and never will be!
You have really had some fabulous snow up there. Any cross country skiing?

Morning friends! I woke up with a bit of a cold and two dogs that are trying to take advantage of my weakness. Not cool man, not cool. So I plan on staying in my jammies and LTing and reading the day away.
140 Hi Jenny! Well it has stopped snowing (for now...) and the dogs are loving playing in it. If only they would listen! Their listening skills are leaving a lot to be desired today so we are spending some quiet time inside now!
141 Thanks Reba!
142 Hi Susan! I forget they were making shows out of Follett's work. Didn't they do Pillars of the Earth too?
143 haha Julia, that could be it. Or it could be that when I say "look here, look here" Jax just ignores me and hyper Tempe looks because she thinks there might be something to chase ...
144 Thanks Pat! That was one of my goals when we moved to Nova Scotia. I wanted to become better at taking photos and keeping the photos organized. I'd like to do a scrapbook of the places that we end up living and traveling too.
145 HI Cee! Actually I think Tempe is just about finished growing. They both have lab in them but Jax has shepherd which helped him become a bit bigger, and Tempe might have a bit of border collie in her. The vet didn't think she would grow much more. She has filled out and gained a bit of weight, but I think that's mostly because she was underfed before and now she is spoiled!
I'll agree to that, the snow is quite pretty ... pain in the rear end though! ;)
146 Haha sorry I couldn't help more Stasia!
147 Sorry Monika, I'd actually rather have snow than mud. Wiping their feet is so much easier when it's just water to wipe off!
148 HI Kim! Glad to see you enjoyed it. I keep flopping back and forth in my head about how I felt about that one. I liked it, but I didn't like it ... so weird! I'm not normally this indecisive!
149 Good idea Lisa! eBooks are so much lighter! I'm reading them in hardcover right now because I bought the first one before I owned an ereader and I'm a big fan of having whole series in the same format. Kind of peculiar that way.
150 HI Suz! I wish I knew more of the history around the world wars, but then I would probably catch a mistake in the history in the book and then not enjoy the book so much! So I guess ignorance is a blessing that sense haha
I've not heard of Frederick Forsyth, so I'll have to look him up!
That's so incredibly cool that you not only met Rickman but that you got to help defend him! You lead a cool life lady!
There aren't many ski slopes around here but I believe there are some good places to cross country and snow shoe. There is a couple provincial parks around here that would be good if you like that sort of thing ... I prefer warmth and hot cocoa :)
151 Thanks Amber! That's not odd at all, the siding colour was one of the things that we liked about this house!
152 HI Kath! Thanks :)

The pics of the dogs in the snow are precious! I know how much they love snow. It moves!! :-D
And the pic of Tempe crashed out on Zoo Station is pretty darn cute, too.
I'm going to have to keep checking in on your thread on a regular basis if you're going to keep posting puppy pictures!

Cute puppy pic alert!!!
Oh, I think you'll like Forsyth! The Day of the Jackal and The Odessa File are his classic early novels, very fast-paced thrillers written in the 1970s or perhaps late 1960s? One of the things I like about his later novels is that he writes very effectively about a post Cold War world of espionage, even before that was fashionable. Icon is a great one that kinda foreshadows a corrupt Putinesque Russia; in Avenger, his main character pursues a Bosnian war criminal, and then there is The Deceiver, which really is four novellas linked by the idea that a British agent has to rationalize his continued employment by pointing to cases where human intelligence is still vital in a post Cold War world dominated by technology -- each of the stories is excellent. The Fist of God has as its backdrop the real-life quest by Saddam to build a super rocket and revolves around the first Gulf War. All the later novels are detail rich and very compelling, IMO. Great genre fiction.

Hello Chelle, I love the pics of your dogs, especially the once in the snow picture. Although, the one of Tempe resting on your book is brilliant as well. I can't let our dog near my books at all, because he always starts to lick and nibble *shudder*
163ChelleBearss
155 haha Jenny, Tempe's comfortable bed is actually my foot stool that the dogs have taken over as their own!
156 Thanks Jean :)
157 Maybe Cee, just maybe. She thinks books taste mighty fine as she keeps licking them!
158 Thanks Linda! 2012 was a great reading year!
159 Feel free to stop by anytime Ellen! I'll try not to overload everyone with mass amounts of puppy pictures though!
160 Thanks Suz, he does sound great and since you write so highly of him then he is for sure going on my wishlist!
161 Oh Bianca, book nibbling is not nice! Jax doesn't bother with my books at all but Tempe likes to lick them. No nibbling though thankfully!
162 Thanks Micky! Just blah today and my nose won't stop running

All caught up here, Chelle! I LOVE the dog pics - my favorite would have to be the first one with Tempe reasting her head on your book and looking at you - too sweet! Good reviews here, too. I have not yet read any Follett, but sounds like I need to check him out. And Forsyth, too (thanks, Suz!). Sorry to hear that you were feeling a bit under the weather, but a jammie day sounds like just the ticket. Hope you were feeling better today!

4) Lure of the Labrador Wild by Dillon Wallace (4*)
Read for 75 Books Challenge for 2013,
2013 Category Challenge: Non-fiction/biography
In 1903 Leonidas Hubbard and Dillon Wallace set out with their Indian guide, George Elson to explore an area of Labrador that had not been fully explored by Europeans yet. In their attempt to explore Lake Michikamau they took a wrong route and instead of following the Naskapi River they instead followed the Susan River, which sent them into the heart of Labrador and on a path that they were not prepared for. With the cold winter winds coming in and the last scraps of food gone the three men found their adventure quickly turning into a fight for their lives.
This was a completely engrossing read that left me wondering how anyone could have survived this experience. The strength and courage that Dillon writes of is inspiring. Being forced to carry hundred pound loads of gear and a canoe on little to no food and wading through snow with only moccasins on their feet yet hardly complaining and bolstering each others spirits with talk of home and bible stories is truly amazing.
I read this as an ebook and while it is a great story I would have loved to be able to see the maps and photos that went along with this story. I will be keeping an eye out for a used copy of this book with the photos and maps included as it would truly add to the story.
I found some of the photos online though and I've added a few here to share

I'm a sucker for survival stories, Chelle. I'll see if my library has Lure of the Labrador Wild. I definitely want maps and photos as I read.
Love all the cute puppy pics. There is no way you could overdo them! Tempe does seem to have a thing for books. She would make a good LT mascot.

I also enjoyed the early Forsyth thrillers.

Hi friends! Feeling better today thankfully! Nose is still running away but otherwise I am feeling more energetic. I had a doctor appointment today to try and address the back pain issues and the Doctor has suggested that I try physiotherapy and massage therapy as she thinks it is muscle related. I am pretty excited as Nate's benefits cover most of the cost of both and I LOVE massages!!
Nate is working nights today so me and the pooches have been hanging out. I managed to get two batches of marinara sauce made and frozen and now it's book time!
Hope you all are having a great day :)
166 Thanks Donna! I hope your library has a good copy of that book! I'm going to be keeping an eye out for a better copy as the ebook just didn't cut it! 167 HI Mark! Is Zoo Station part of a series then? I am about halfway and enjoying it so far. I'm getting a little over Nazi'ed though as I've read a few books lately that are set around WWII. My next book might be about fluffy puppies or kittens just to reset from all the heavy themes I've been reading about!
168 Hi Micky! I normally love the doom and gloom type books but I think I've read too many lately! I'll have to find a lighter theme for my next read
169 haha Julia, good point! Thankfully it has gotten quite a bit warmer here lately! The wind has picked up again today but the temp is finally above zero so I'm happy :)
170 Hi TJ. My fave is Stephen King's The Stand. What's yours?
171 Thanks Nancy! I noticed your review was one of only two! Nice to see you enjoyed it as well. Did you read any of the follow up books by Wallace? Hubbard's wife did a treck a few years later and wrote a book about it. Not sure if I will read hers

It's between Stephen King's The Shining, Lara Adrians entire Midnight Breed series (book one = Kiss of Midnight) or The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson...It's all too much to call my favorite haha! But Stephen King is my favorite author!

What wonderful puppy pictures, both in the snow and enjoying a book or two! They are adorable. Here it is the middle of January (almost) and Skye hasn't had more than a couple of inches of snow to play in. I should be careful what I wish for..
For the record, I loved The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time but I can see how it might not be for everyone.
Lure of the Labrador Wild looks very interesting - I need to look for that one!
Feel better!!

Hi Chelle, trying to get caught up a bit so I've just now seen the pics of your very photogenic pups. It makes me sad to think of how Tempe was treated before you brought her into your home, but what a beautiful life she lives now!
I thought The Curious Incident was a very different type of story and for that reason I really enjoyed it. However, because it's so unusual it's easy to see that it's not everyone's cup of tea.
Have you measured the size of your arm muscles since you've become the human snow plow. It can be a very peaceful chore, your mind just sort of detaches from the work at hand and goes to other thoughts, at least that use to be my experience with shoveling. Our driveway (laneway- I love that term) is way too long now to even consider going back to the shovel. A plow is an absolute necessity.
Wishing you and Nate a cozy weekend!

5) Zoo Station by David Downing (4*)
Read for 75 Books Challenge for 2013,
2013 Category Challenge: LT Recommended books
John Russell is a british journalist living in pre-WWII Berlin who writes human interest stories for British and American papers. He has a son and girlfriend living in Berlin and if war breaks out Russell will either have to flee the country or risk being placed in a labour camp for the duration of war.
Russell is approached an old soviet buddy to write some Nazi friendly stories for a Russian newspaper and he reluctantly agrees but quickly finds there are more strings attached. When his american journalist neighbour stumbles onto an explosive story and needs help with a translation Russell accompanies him to the interview and the information they receive could get them killed but if they do nothing could get thousands of children killed. In the midst of all this drama Russell finds himself trying to help a jewish family that he has grown to like and desperately needs his help.
This is a low key and slow paced thriller but one that kept me thinking. I quite enjoyed this novel and was happy to find out it was part of a series. I will be picking up the next book as soon as I can!

I posted up there in 164, but I think you missed me because we cross-posted. Glad that you liked Zoo Station, I am planning to get to that one this year, hopefully in the near future. I was happy to see that you are feeling a bit better, and that Nate's benefits will cover the massage therapy - HOORAY for that!
178ChelleBearss
oh no, sorry lady!! I didn't mean to miss you there :-(
You picked great books for me for Christmas, I loved them both! Thanks for having such great taste!

The Lure of the Labrador Wild sounds like a good one, Chelle. It reminds of the Shackleton voyage and other expeditions like that, but maybe less heartbreaking?
I enjoyed Zoo Station, too. I've got another "Station" one on my Kindle, but other books keep jumping the queue.

Whoo hoo honeymoon booked!!
January 23rd I'll be laying on the cuban sand drinking something fruity reading a book!
179 Well Joe I'm not familiar with those others but I wouldn't say Lure of the Labrador Wild is without heartbreak.
180 Glad to see it on your list Linda! It's a good one
182 Glad to help make your WL longer :)

Hi Chelle,
*big smile and a wave* congrats to your honeymoon booking. That's not that long to go anymore. Once you are there have a fruity drink for me as well. :):):):) You must be dancing in circles at home. At least I would!
Glad to hear that you are feeling better as well and hopefully the massage and physio will sort out your backproblem. Backpain *meh* never nice.
I loved your review on Zoo Station going to put the book straight onto my wishlist.
And least not last: I wish you a great weekend *smile*

Hope you are able to get some relief for your back pain, Chelle. I bet it will feel to good to soak up some sunshine. Not too long to wait, January 23rd is just around the corner!

It sounds like the honeymoon trip will be the perfect Rx for the back pain!! warmth, sunshine, salt water bathing... lots of rest...
I do recommend the Downing series; I think the next two are my favorites thus far. (His sixth is due out this year, I believe.)
I have accidentally been reading a lot of arctic stuff, including Late Nights on Air by Elizabeth Hay, and Cold: Adventures in the World's Frozen Places by Bill Streever, both of which are among my best books of the month so far. Accidentally, because after reading too much about the Franklin expedition, I had kind of resolved to steer clear of these stories. But... :-)

Oh boy. Lounging on the beach with a fruity book and a drink....
wait, I mean a fruity drink and a book, don't I?
In any case, if I come across a good book about fluffy kittens and puppies, I'll let you know. I've also been reading a bit in the grim category of late.
*shuts down laptop and settles in to read Maus II*

Your honeymoon in Cuba sounds fantastic, and such a perfect time to head somewhere warm with sandy beaches and, as you mention, fruity drinks! Sorry to learn about your cold. The flu is making its presence known on this side of the country and luckily *knock on wood* it hasn't made an appearance in our household.
Have a good weekend, Chelle!

I haven't had any good snow falls this season. I can't wait to have one just to see how my dog reacts to it. Wonderful Pictures!

Congrats on getting away to the Cuban sun later this month. Make sure that those two gorgeous pooches don't read your entire library in your absence.
I agree with Suz - the early novels of Forsythe are great, great reads.
Have a lovely weekend.

Hi Chelle, hope you enjoy your honeymoon in Cuba at the end of the month, we didn't have a honeymoon due to the infamous miner's strike of 1984/5 but we made up for it on our silver wedding anniversary when we went to Madeira in 2009 and fell in love with the island. Just need a lottery win to go and live there.
Hope you, nate and the dogs are well, we are expecting snow this weekend but not in the quantity that you get and i have have come down with the cold bug that's going around, started with a sniffle at 2pm on thursday and by 7pm i had a full blown cold, not very happy as i feel as if i've been used as a punch bag. Have a great weekend my dear.

In other exciting news today is new car day!!
Since I haven't been working much I decided that owning an expensive SUV wasn't the best choice for me so I have downgraded to a new Hyundai Elantra! We get to pick it up in two hours :)
I find it funny that I am trading in my three year old suv and picking up a brand new car with a full warranty and I'm going to be saving about $200 a month! (and on gas money!!) I will miss sitting up high in my SUV though but that savings is well worth it!
Hope you all are doing something you love this weekend!
184 Jenny, I'm not sure if there will be room for people in my suitcase since I have to leave room for books :)
185 Thanks Bianca, I am excited!! We've been trying to book it for a while now but Nate has to jump through hoops with the military to get permission to travel to certain countries. What a pain in the rear!
186 Thanks Mark! Nate and I have not been to Cuba before so I think it will be fun!
I need to find the second Downing book and get on the hold list for it!
187 Thanks Judy! I have to go for some tests on Monday and then hopefully get a massage and some physio started next week. Back pain is such an annoying pain as it reflects pretty much on everything I do.
188 Suz Isn't it weird how we sometimes read in batches of similar books? I don't know how I managed it but I have read a bunch involving WWII and the Nazi regime lately and I went to find some Orange prize books yesterday and two that I picked up were about Nazis! (I put them back down again....)
189 Thanks Reba! I'm a big fan of laying on the beach reading :)
190 Glad to see another Zoo Station fan Cushla! I'll for sure be looking for the next book
191 Thanks Linda!
192 Thanks Micky, I'm excited!!
193 Thanks Megan! 11 more days!
194 Oh you are reading a grim Nazi tale too eh! Do you want me to lend you a fluffy kitty book too once I find one?!
haha a fruity book eh? I think I'll just stick to the fruity drink
195 Thanks Cee, it will be great! I need some warmth!!
196 Happy weekend to you too Lori! Thankfully the flu hasn't made it's way here, just the sniffles. I was worried that it would get worse but it seems to be staying in my nose so hopefully it will go away soon!
197 Hi Monica, well hopefully you will get some snow soon then! I know my dogs just love it! Jax and Tempe both run out the dog and then roll around in the snow before running off to play
198 Ha Paul, these pooches will be going to puppy daycare while we are gone. They will be so tired from all the playing when we get home! Last time I took Jax to daycare he slept for a week when we brought him home!
Glad to see another fan of Forsythe! I'll be finding some of his work to add to my WL
199 Oh sorry to see you are sick John! Hope Mrs John is taking good care of you!
Do you normally see much snow where you are?
200 I think a lot of Canadians head to Cuba because the resorts are not as expensive as other countries. We got a trip for the two of us for the same price as one of us would pay in Jamaica
We had originally planned to go to Costa Rica but when we sat down with the numbers we decided to save the extra money just in case we might need it for baby related items later this year ;)
ETA I just realized that not only did I miss Mamie but I missed a few others as well!! SO sorry friends! Not trying to ignore anyone on purpose!
173 Hi TJ! Those are some good books! I haven't read anything by Lara Adrians though, what type of books does she write?
174 Oh you've done it now Joanne, you will probably get a ton of snow now because you said that! lol I'm sure Skye would appreciate some more snow!
175 Hi Lynda! Ha, human snowplow eh! Love it! I don't find it all that peaceful, mostly because of my back issues and because I am constantly on alert for watching where the dogs are. Most of the time they are smart enough to stay well back from the road but I've caught Tempe near the road once so now I need to keep my eyes on them. Our laneway is a large circular one that could fit about 10-12 cars on it, so it takes a while to shovel the whole lane. I actually broke down last weekend and paid a neighbour to plow it because there was just too much heavy wet snow for me and Nate was working. Best money ever spent :)

Chelle, we are new-car twins! I bought a new Elantra in July, and I absolutely love it. That's not surprise, as I traded in a 1999 Elantra to buy this one. :-)
205jnwelch
The honeymoon trip sounds great, Chelle - and what a good time of year to take a break and spend some time reading on a beach. Congrats on the new car, too! Lots going on in your world!
206johnsimpson
>201 ChelleBearss:, yes we do get some decent amounts of snow on occasions by UK standards but nothing like what you get but it does look nice although the country goes into a panic and things come to a stop. God knows what we'd do if we got the amount of snow you receive. And yes Mrs John (Karen) is looking after me.
207MickyFine
The most important question is: have you named new car yet? (sorry, I name lots of inanimate objects).
208MonicaLynn
Wow Honeymoon sounds wonderful. Somewhere warm with beach and sand sounds wonderful right now!! Our snow is almost melted away here and now we have MUD uggh.. I am constantly wiping off Miss Angel's paws.. Sigh.. the snow is planning to come back by Monday though Todays temp was 60 degrees Fahrenheit..
209dk_phoenix
>107 dk_phoenix:: Oh, I'm loving the dog pictures!!! And in reply to your question from AGES ago (er... last weekend, but it feels like ages), he can roam under supervision (we have a cranky cat) but oddly he chooses to either stay in/on his cage or on me/snuggled up in my sweater. He's a bit codependent, to be honest... I actually wish he would roam a little more on his own... haha.

An upcoming honeymoon in sunny Cuba AND a new car! Life is good these days isn't it? I love my 6-year-old Hyundai Azera and will probably get another one when I decide to trade. Good things tend to come in threes, Chelle. I wonder what is next for you?
212Chatterbox
In lieu of a fluffy kitten tale, and as an antidote to the Nazi stories, and because you're also a Canadian -- have you read Terry Fallis's books about Ottawa politics? At the suggestion of a friend I just read the first one of a series of two, The Best Laid Plans, and plan to move right along to #2. Fallis won a Leacock award and they are quite funny, although I think you need to be Canadian to "get" all the humor! :-)

I am dodging book bullets right and left as I already have Lure of the Labrador Wild and Zoo Station in the BlackHole.
Congratulations on getting the honeymoon booked!

Congrats on the new car! When we were car buying last fall for my wife, we looked at the Elantra but went with a Nissan Sentra. Similar vehicles. We're happy with it.

Happy Sunday friends! It's lazy day here today. We were out with friends last night and Nate had a few too many "pops" so he is resting and recovering today.
Yesterday we took back one of my christmas gifts that wasn't working right and I decided to buy books with the cash instead of anymore electronics. The haul is:
Iron House by John Hart
Aunt Dimity Digs In by Nancy Atherton
Silesian Station & Stettin Station by David Downing
202 haha Jenny I was thinking of putting the extra money towards food instead ;) Maybe a book or two as well though
203 Awesome! You have good taste :)
204 Thanks Amber! I am getting spoiled lately!
205 Thanks Joe! I am really looking forward to some beach time!
206 John if you got as much as us you all would learn how to live with it. If everything stopped every time we got lots of snow we would never get anything accomplished!
Glad to see Karen is taking good care of you!
207 Actually Micky I have never named a car before! Does your car have a name?
208 Hi Monica! Our snow is starting to melt a bit too. Our laneway is almost bare but it will take weeks of warmth to clear off our lawn enough to find the mud. Thankfully we are just dealing with wet paws still instead of muddy ones!
209 oh Faith from what I understand cranky cats and birds don't go well together! ;-)
I've never been in a house with a free roaming bird before. That would probably freak me out on the first visit (although I'm sure I would get used to it)
210 Life is good Donna! Don't know what number 3 is but I'll let you know when it arrives :)
211 Me too Rhian, I've never been before!
212 Thanks for the suggestion Suz, I'll check and see if my library has that one. I'm not a big politics fan but I do like trying Canadian authors out. I've actually got two Canadians on the go right now, Atwood's Blind Assassin and Boyden's Through Black Spruce.
213 Thanks Stasia! Glad I could add to your wishlist!
214 Hi Mark! I actually didn't end up looking at Nissan at all. We ended up going with Hyundai as they were giving me a great deal on my trade in!

I'm with Micky on naming things. My car is named Emmylou. I have a potted plant on my file cabinet at work named Chuck. And my walking cane is named Earl. And all of my electronics have names, too, but I won't inflict those on you. :-)
The key, I've found, is not to force the name. You have to drive the car for a while and just sort of listen to what it tells you. (Oh geez, now I've really made myself sound like a weirdo.)

Chelle, so glad that you enjoyed Zoo Station. Great review too! I read the entire series last summer. Once I got started on the series, I could not stop!Oh I see that you've got a couple more of David Downing series at the ready. Enjoy Cuba!
Speaking of Cuba , my brother and his wife have been at least once and very much enjoyed it. And I must recommend this book to you, written by a Canadian author. It's an interesting mystery that takes place in Cuba - The Beggar's Opera by Peggy Blair. I thought it gave a wonderful flavour of Cuba.

Another Zoo Station fan. Excellent!
How is the new car working out so far? We drive a Subaru Outback and I adore it, but the gas bill does add up. Luckily, we are very low-mileage drivers. The car is 25 months old and we just passed 15K miles.

6) Through Black Spruce by Joseph Boyden
Read for 75 Books Challenge for 2013,
2013 Category Challenge: Canadian Authors5*
Through Black Spruce introduces us to the next two generations of the Bird family. We first met the family in Three Day Road on Xavier Bird's journey through the war. This next installment introduces us to Xavier's son Will Bird, who is in a coma, and Will's niece Annie Bird, who is having a rough time in life. They alternate telling each other the tale of how their recent experiences have brought them both to the point they are currently in their lives. They each share their tales of struggle with their own vices and trying to fit into the world around them. Both are engaging story tellers.
This was a book that I did not want to put down, each chapter end makes the reader want to read another chapter. I forgot my book at work one night and felt like I was going through withdrawal.
Highly recommended.
ETA
Favorite quotes from the book.
Mother Nature was one angry slut. She'd try and kill you the first chance she got. You'd screwed with her for so long that she was happy to eliminate you.
Build it all up, and it all falls down. It all burns down. Everything you need can be taken. Remember that, nieces. Everything you hold dear, it can be taken.
225ChelleBearss
216 haha Micky I guess you are a special snowflake eh! I don't have names for any of my belongings. I guess that makes me a little boring! (Although I have decided that my car will be named Stella)

220 haha not too weird... Just a little ;-) Nate named his old car but I don't think his jeep has a name ... I'll have to remember to ask him
221 Hi Deb! Thanks for the recomendation. Touch stone is wrong but I've added the one you mentioned to my WL!
222 Aww thanks Cee! It's easy too drive too fast in my new car so I'm making an effort to watch my speed :) Hope your shoulder is feeling better these days!
223 Hi Ellen! New car is doing great! I am really noticing the gas milage difference as I would be getting close to a fill up and I've only made a small dent in the gas gage! :-)

Ahh sorry about that! I just changed the touchstone to the The Beggar's Opera to the correct one. Very sleuth like of you to track down the correct book! :) I think I saw it lately in the early reviews section here on LT.
Great review of Black Spruce! I'm trying to get to Three Day Road in my TBR pile(s.)

Deb do get to it sooner! I really enjoyed both of Boyden's books. Apparently he has a third in the works as well
Hi Cee! If you loved Three Day Road then you should also love Through Black Spruce!
Ellen I like to read books in the order they were written, but these are stand alone books so you really can read them in which ever order you want. They mention the characters in the first book a bit in the second, but it won't matter if you read them out of order.

I like to read "in order," as well, so I've put Three Day Road on hold at the library. The comments on spl.org were very enthusiastically positive (just like yours).

I loved Three Day Road and tried Through Black Spruce shortly after it came out but it didn't work for me. Maybe I should try again...

Hi Chelle! Thanks for dog photo fix - dog on book, dogs in snow, etc!
Have a lovely honeymoon! That sounds awesome! I always forget that other countries' citizens can easily vacation in Cuba.
I enjoyed your reviews. I might check out the David Downing books at some point and I had a similiar reaction as you to The Curious Incident. I do love Mark Haddon's most recent novel though - The Red House.

Chelle- Good review of Through Black Spruce! And 5 stars too! Nice. I read Three Day Road in 2011 and liked it a lot.

UGH!
Do you ever have a day where you wish you could go back to bed and start the day fresh a few hours later??
I had to get up this morning for some blood work so I let the pooches out for a pee and then put Tempe back in her crate and left to go to the hospital for the tests. I was only going to be gone an hour and it was still early so I planned to give the dogs breakfast when I got home as I would be arriving home around their normal breakfast hour.
I proceeded to forget both my book and my cell phone at home and had to sit in the waiting room for an hour without anything to do.
When I got home I found that Jackson got hungry and decided to have a breakfast buffet in my garbage can!! He tipped over the bag and spread garbage through my kitchen! I was shocked because we have had him for almost 4 years and he has NEVER done that before! If it had been Tempe I wouldn't have been so shocked because she is a puppy and learning but Jax is an older dog that has never done that before.
I think I will head back to bed now and see if the day starts better when I wake up ....

Oh no! I vote for crawling back in bed and trying again later.
Do you think Tempe put Jax up to it, whispering, "Go ahead, do it!" through the bars of the crate?

7) A Certain Justice by PD James
Read for 75 Books Challenge for 2013,
2013 Category Challenge: Authors that are new to me
4*
Venetia Aldridge, a distinguish barrister, has been killed in her chambers. Stabbed once through the heart she has been left in her office chair, covered in blood with a full wig on.
Venetia had recently won a murder trial of a young man accused of murdering his aunt. To her utter horror that young man has become engaged to her daughter and Venetia was in the process of putting a stop to the romance. Although her daughter and fiancé have an alibi for the time of the murder, it turns out they weren't the only ones who would benefit from Venetia's death.
I have seen many people mention PD James over the years and I've heard great things about the Adam Dalgliesh series but I had never gotten around to reading anything by her. I am glad to say that has been rectified. This book was very addicting and I was happily surprised to see it didn't end the way I had guessed it would. I would like to go back to the start of the series and start them in order now.

Love the pooch pictures, Chelle, and am totally excited by the idea of Cuba beaches in January!! Have lots of fun (how could you not?)!
248lit_chick
Thoroughly enjoyed your comments on A Certain Justice, Chelle. I haven't read any P.D. James, either. Perhaps something I need to rectify ...
249PaulCranswick
James, Dexter, Rendell and Hill were the seventies/eighties generation of british whodunnit writers. Great stylists especially PD James but Dalgleish can be a bit of a stuffed shirt if you ask me.
Have a great weekend as you gear up to your Cuban adventure.

8) The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
Read for:
75 Books Challenge for 2013,
2013 Category Challenge: Prize winners (Booker or Orange Prizes),
Orange January/July
4.5*
Madeline Miller tells the tale of The Iliad through Patroclus' point of view and in my opinion does a superb job! I listened to an audio version that was narrated by Frazer Douglas and I could listen to him talk all day! Such a fine job of narrating a very interesting story.

246 haha Ellen, that is true! Although I get a lot of reading time at work but rarely am I able to catch a nap
247 Thanks Roni! four more days!! I've started packing, of course the books have been packed first :)
248 Thanks Nancy! My aunt lent me a PD James book about 10 years ago and I gave it back unread. I can't imagine now why I didn't end up reading it!
249 Thanks Paul, I'll have to check out some of those other names! I didn't mind Dalgleish at all, but he sure isn't an Inspector Gamache! ;)
250 Well Kath, what are you waiting for :)

Hi Chelle! Congrats on the upcoming honeymoon and the new car!! Pooh on Jax and the garbage can. I love PD james, but I have not read that one, so yay! It is a bright, but very cold (for Portland) day here and I am mostly caught up on life, so I get to play on LT and read my book. Happiness. Wishing you a great day, too.
254MonicaLynn
Chelle, I just wanted to stop by and say Hello, I sure hope you two have a wonderful Honeymoon. Where are Jax and Tempe staying while you are away. I am sure they will miss you very much. If you were passing by I would love to take care of them for you while you were honeymooning.

Delighted you enjoyed the audio of The Song of Achilles as much as I did, Chelle : ).

Hope everyone is having a great weekend! Seems like the threads are starting to quiet down a bit.
We got a ton of snow today but I don't have to leave the house, yay! The dogs and I are hibernating tonight. We had a nice nap together on the couch after Nate left for work and now they are playing while I alternate LT time with reading time!
Nate got some exciting news yesterday. He has signed up for a military tasking and will be working in Iceland for a month in April and May. He is very excited as this will be his first trip with the military and it's to a place that we probably would never have gone on our own. I'm sad that he will be gone a month but I'm very happy for him that he gets to do some travelling!
Happy weekend everyone!
HI Kim! Thanks and thanks! 4 more days until honeymoon!! :) Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
Hi Monica! Jax and Tempe are going to a local kennel while we are away. I'm sure they will enjoy their vacation as much as Nate and I will! :)
Thanks Nancy! I was actually looking for things to do around the house so I would have an excuse to listen to it!

Hi Chelle- I think you missed me up there but no worries, I don't hold a grudge. I've been trying to get an audio copy of The Song of Achilles for several months, maybe longer and it wasn't available. I'll look again. I'm glad it worked well in that format.

Aw crap, I missed people again! I blame it on my need for a nap a few days ago! Sorry to those I missed and thanks to Mark for bringing it to my attention!
230 Ellen I am glad you are going to read them in order! They are both great books that I recommend that everyone read!
231 Yes Micky, you should try again! :) I hope it works better for you the second time around
232 HI Kerri! Thanks, 4 more sleeps to go until Cuba! Can Americans vacation there or is it too much of a hassle?
233 Hi Mark! That's awesome that they are making a film of Divergent. I wonder if it will be as good as The Hunger Games film?
234 Hi Kath! A sorta-maybe list? I think you should bump Three Day Road to your to-read list asap! :)
The car is great! I am loving being able to listen to audiobooks through my speakers instead of having to use headphones! I'll never want to go back to the days before usb plugins!
235 Thanks Joanne! I am very much looking forward to it!

259 Hi Mark! So sorry for missing you there! I always like your visits :)
I downloaded my copy from audible. PM me your address and I'll send you a CD with the mp3 file on it.

Morning Chelle! Just finished alot of catching up on your thread. Firstly, I'm so jealous about your trip to Cuba. My husband and I have been tempted to fly there from Cancun but we hear that if a US passport is stamped from Cuba, you're stripped of your passport or something weird like that. I can't wait to hear all about your trip.
Congrats on you new car! Best wishes for many safe and happy miles.
Ooo, Nates trip to Iceland is very cool, in a number of ways. Sounds like a step in the right direction as far as his career is concerned.
Have a great day :0)

Hi Chelle, just stopping by to wish you a fab remaining Sunday!
I also hope that you are going to have a wonderful time on your honeymoon, only a few more days left until you leave. Yay, for a lot of fun.
And congrats for Nate to being able to go to Iceland, another country which I would like to visit at least once in my life. I hope that he will be able to enjoy his time there and that his work will allow him to do some exploring.
I also thought that they made a stunning movie from The Hunger Games. I haven't read Divergent yet, but it is on my reading list for this year.
The same applies to Song of Achilles.

Ohhh how exciting that Nate gets to got to Iceland! I am 1/2 Icelandic and my mom and niece visited Iceland last year for a week and very much enjoyed it! I hope that you are able to get there for a little while too! My grandparents had also been, as well as my brother.
I had thought that you were off in Cuba - but not until the 23, if memory serves.
I'm so glad that you enjoyed A Certain Justice. I JUST LOVED P.D. James, most especially her early books! I read them back in my twenties. Bravo to you for a newly discovered author!

Morning friends! Happy Sunday!
Today us going to be another lazy day for me, hurray! Beef stew is in the slow cooker, Kobo is charging and I am alternating between doing something fun (like reading) and shoveling. We got a ton of snow yesterday and of course Nate is working nights! The snow is too heavy for our sad little snowblower so I am shoveling a few feet at a time when I take the beasts outside to play. It will take me a very long time but with my back pain that's all I can do.
My aunt posted this on my facebook this morning. I love Nate's family, they are so sweet!

262 Me either Faith! It's not really the type of book that I would normally pick up on my own. Suz (chatterbox) mentioned how great she thought it was so I figured I would give it a shot! Glad I did :)
263 HI Lynda! I find it so strange that Americans have such trouble traveling to Cuba. You would think after all this time USA and Cuba could come to some sort of understanding.
264 HI Bianca! Yes I am very excited! 3 more sleeps! I'll start packing tonight once Nate has left for work.
I think Nate will end up having some days off while he is in Iceland so hopefully he can do a bit of exploring and present buying ;)
265 HI Deb! I would love to go but unfortunately I won't be able to join him. I wish though!
Yep, we leave on Wednesday! Getting excited for some time away from snow!!
I checked this morning and my library has quite a few of PD James works so I have the first book in the series on hold now :)

Just remembered, Chelle. Will Nate be travelling on a military passport? Because I remember when my cousin was thinking of getting married in Cuba, her brother, who's in the Canadian Navy, learned that the Cuban government might possibly refuse him entry or exit with a military passport. So my cousin got married in Mexico instead. This was a few years ago but maybe something to do a quick check on. :)
Hope the snow lets up for you.

Oh my gosh - the honeymoon - it's almost here!
Glad Nate gets to go to Iceland. He will probably find he loves it enough to plan a trip there with you someday. It's a very unique place... and very friendly. Oh - I DO hope he gets lots of time to buy presents! lol
wishing safe travels for the honeymooners ;-)

Hi Micky! Nope, Nate can only use his military passport when he is traveling with the military. We are normal civilians this week :)
Question for all my LT peeps
Do you lend your books to friends?
Do you lend your digital books to friends (audio or ebook)?
I have always lent my books to friends. Usually I am the one who has all the good books so my friends know that they can borrow them from me! I don't see a difference between lending a normal paper book or lending an audiobook/ebook. If I have already paid for the content then shouldn't I be able to use it how I please?
I was reading this article tonight and I was surprised to see that the laws regarding digital content haven't really kept up with reality and are pretty outdated.
Normally I'm not the type of person who debates things, but this topic kind of bothers me. It came up on another thread but I felt instead of invading that friends thread that I should move it to my own thread.
Thoughts anyone?

We do lend books to friends, Chelle. The downside, of course, is their not coming back, so we have started picking up cheap copies of our favorites at books sales, etc., to lend out.
I don't even know how to lend out digital copies. :-)
Protecting digital content vs. permitting fair use of it is presenting problems every day. A lot of laws have transferred pretty easily to our online world, but that's driving people crazy.

Chelle- I just don't know! But better be safe than sorry, mentioning it. I also thrive on sharing books, almost as much as reading them. I really appreciate your offer and will love every minute of it. Wasn't that a Loverboy song?

If my friends want to read my books they're very welcome to borrow them, even if they take forever to read them sometimes.
I've never tried to share an e-book.

The Kindle actually lets you lend any of your books out to another Kindle user for 2 weeks. During that time, you can't access the book, but it automatically returns to you at the end of the two weeks.

Ahhh, good to know Roni. Sounds like it must work in much the same way as borrowing digital media from a library.

I love lending out my print books. I dont do digital, but would lend them too if I knew how. Currently I have at least 9 books out on loan to people. And I love when they come back looking for a recommendation!

I don't like ebooks a whole lot, while I do read them and have a Kindle. I don't like the fact that, no matter what you pay for your ebook, it's only rental and can never be turned into ownership. You don't actually own anything you can't dispose of as you see fit, eg houses can be sold, rented out, abandoned, whatever is within the law; ebooks can be lent *to another customer of the device seller's* and at the discretion of the content owner. (That little setting you see mentioned on Kindle pages, "Lending: Enabled" can as easily say "Disabled.")
Fie on this. I like books.

I know you can do that in the US but you can't do it in the UK (and presumably other jurisdictions as well). The only way I can share my kindle content with Mr SandDune is to use tha same amazon account, which is not ideal, particularly as I end up paying for the books half the time!

I need to get round to reading Song of Achilles soon.
And I never lend out my books. I love my friends and family, but not that much. Ha!

I lend digital books to one friend. She borrow those available to lend from my nook ...
I do not lend my books to most friends, unless it is a second copy I have purchased for that reason

Oh my rants about DRM could go on and on. Suffice it to say that my issues around ownership of ebooks is why I don't buy them and why I don't have an ereading device.
However, I do lend paper books but usually only to close friends who understand that they must take very good care of my babies or they will not get to borrow another. ;)

Just caught up on your thread, Chelle and wanted to delurk to say I'm excited for you. What a great honeymoon destination! Make sure you guys take lots of pictures. I've never been to Cuba and would love an opportunity to visit one day.

Happy Tuesday friends!! I hope everyone had a great weekend and a good start to their week
I had a doctor appointment yesterday to find out the results of my xray and blood work. Good news is my back problem is not bone related and I don't have any of the issues that my mom and uncle have. Some physiotherapy and strengthening work should help.
Bad news is the blood work found that I have hypothyroidism, which has nothing to do with my back but explains a lot about other things that I didn't really realize were an issue until the doctor mentioned my symptoms. (Nate was sitting there nodding at the doctor everytime she mentioned a new symptom: uh huh ya, uh huh ya makes sense lol. He is such an ass ;)
I have a lot to learn about this condition but from what my doctor says it's pretty common and controllable through medications, but unfortunately I'll probably always be on medications for it and it could be part of the reason that we have been unsuccessful at baby creation so far. (Shhhhhhh no one in RL knows that we've been trying. It's an LT secret now :) I go back for more blood work in three months to make sure the level of medications is right and then once a year from then on. I'm not surprised at finding out my thyroid is stupid since two of my aunts have had thyroid issues and I had been warned that I probably would end up with it later in life.
In better news we leave for CUBA tomorrow!! I'm very excited to get away from the snow and cold and RL worries to lay on the beach with a drink and a book!
I've packed my Kobo for the flight but unfortunately Cuba is 220v electricity and we don't have an adapter so I won't be able to charge my kobo, so good old paper books will be traveling with us!
Packed so far (but I reserve the right to change my mind)
The Maze Runner by James Dashner
Silesian Station by David Downing
Iron House by John Hart
and Aunt Dimity Digs in by Nancy Atherton
on my kobo for the flight I am still working away at The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood
269 One more sleep Cee!! :) We are getting exited! I bought a new pair of flipflops yesterday for the trip and some sunscreen! Now we are ready to go!
I am very happy for Nate that his first trip with the military will be someplace so cool and not war related! I wish he could pack me in his luggage and take me with him! I've been looking online at the area he will be in and it looks so pretty! I've told him that he MUST go to the geothermal spa!

271 Hi Joe! I always keep track of what books have been lent out and all my friends that borrow have been given a lecture of how to treat a book properly! (Use a bookmark, don't bend pages over, etc...)
I think if I have paid the same for an audio book as a real book then I should be able to lend it as I see fit. I really think the laws need some updating in this regard.

272 I hope you enjoy them Mark! Sorry I deleted my posts from your thread but I didn't want the LT police to put you in jail! Hope you enjoy the audios and if they don't work please let me know as I've never put them on CD before.
273 welcome to my thread Adrienne! I also share any book but only to close friends that I know will treat them nicely :)
274 Roni that is a great feature! I wonder if Kobo will ever get around to doing that?
276 That's great Megan! I'm sure your friends appreciate it! I figure I've spent so much money on books and I love sharing them so that they get read more than once!
277 Richard I like books too :) I guess we have that in common.
I didn't actually know that we couldn't *own* the ebooks until I read that article. I think I will end up buying less ebooks and more real books and I love to lend books out and I'd like to be able to donate my collection eventually. If I buy ebooks I won't have anything to donate.
278 Rhian I know when I buy a kobo book I have the option to download the epub from my kobo account onto my computer. Does Kindle let you do that as well? I wonder if you would then be able to download that epub book unto your husband's kindle? I figure if you have paid for it then there should be no reason that someone else in your household couldn't put it on their own device?
279 Yes Amber, you need to get to Song of Achilles! Although I'm sure you would be able to be more critical of it as I believe you have already read Homer. I was able to treat it like just another story as I was not familiar with the story of Achilles beforehand.
280 Morphy I stopped loaning books out to coworkers years ago for the same reason, but I still loan to close friends that I know will give them back. (I always keep track of who has them though)
281 HI Kath! So nice that you have been able to use that feature through kindle!
282 HI Micky! I didn't realize about the ownership until recently! I think I will be buying less ebooks because of it. I'm not impressed. I will still use my ereader for the books that I have already purchased and for library ebooks.
283 HI Caro! I will take tons of photos! We are thinking about doing a boat tour while we are there so I hope to have some great photos when we get home :)

Oooh potential future LT baby! Love it. I bet you'll be amazed at how much better you feel once the meds straighten out your thyroid issues; I know my mom was. She's been on thyroid medication for YEARS and she ended up with 4 children, so maybe once you're settled into the meds you'll have better luck? At any rate, sending fertile vibes your way...
And have a great time in Cuba! We have a wind chill of -16 today, so needless to say I'm jealous.

Hi Chelle. Just stopping by to catch up and wish you a wonderful honeymoon in Cuba. Have fun working on your secret!

#285 I think with kindle books in the UK you can only read them via a kindle app which is linked to your amazon account. So they can't be lent out to someone else. At the moment me and Mr SandDune share the same account, which is not particularly convenient.
Have a great time in Cuba!

Chelle - I am not averse to lending out my books but not to total strangers. I have a very close friend who is a Dutchman and works on a dregding vessel on the River Plate in Argentina. He works 6 weeks on and 6 weeks off and I generally recommend thrillers and chunksters for him to keep himself gainfully employed on ship - after all he's only the Chief Engineer. He told me that he once had a panic in the engine room and had his crew waiting and extra ten minutes as he was finishing a chapter of the latest Jack Reacher he had on loan from me.
Have a lovely, lovely time in Cuba. Does Canada have any restrictions on the import of their finest export?

Have a fantastic honeymoon, my friend! Soak up that SUN! I like the books you are bringing along too! I NEED to get to Iron House. I've had it in the stacks, since it came out.

Chiming in briefly on the e-book (and all things digital) I freely share my paper books but I never purchase e-books or on-line music. As copyright is dictated by the laws of each specific country, this is a sticky point in the on-line world we live in. Case law in Canada has currently not provided any definitive answers to the question, but if the e-purchases (books/music) are being treated as only licenses, and not outright purchases, that's a problem. One thing to keep in mind is the article you provided the link to was the Guardian, a UK newspaper and would most likely have examined the issue from a UK perspective. Our (Canadian) copyright law is technology neutral - a difference between ownership over a purchased digital copy as opposed to a purchased print copy and the rights a user has over that copy is not supposed to make a difference. The right is the right, regardless of technology, keeping in mind that even in Canada, the right does not allow an individual to make a copy to give to someone else, while retaining the original purchase copy. What is problematic is that Amazon, Apple, et al control the user accounts for purchase and download and it is their terms and conditions, and the terms and conditions of the publishers, that are proving to be the problem. Time will tell how this all plays out.
Hope you and Nate have a great honeymoon in Cuba!

Happy honeymooning!! (PS-- I had heard they are good for making families, and if not, fixing the thyroid should help.) I've been taking stuff for it for years and I guarantee you will feel better! Hugs.

seconding post #242. My first Hyundai Elantra was seven years old with 70,000 miles when I traded it in for the one I purchased in 2010. I only had to buy new tires and a battery for the entire seven years I owned the car.
The current Elantra is wonderful!!!! I feel so good about this car, I could sell them!

Linda, do you have a new Elantra too?! Isn't that funny? I got one last July. And like you, I traded in an old Elantra — a 1999 with 140,000 miles on it. So far, I love the new one even more than the old one.

We are home and we had a great time! We had lots of rain (5 days out of 7) but we still had a ton of fun! It was a beautiful resort with lots to do and the weather was hot even when it rained so I actually got in the pool a bit (And oh am I sunburned!!)
I'll post some photos on my new thread later today (the thread police knocked on the door while I was away...)
I'll be playing catch up for the next couple days with my own thread and with all of you!

Chelle, glad to see you had a wonderful honeymoon. I see you got tons of reading done as well :) I bet the furkids missed you two bunches. I hope your sunburn isn't to painful and turns into a beautiful tan.

286 Thanks for the fertility vibes Amber! :) Hope your area has gotten warmer. I came home to 15c so I'm happy!
297 Paul that is kind of you to keep your friend in books while he is working! 6 weeks is a long time to be away so I'm sure having good books helps!
There are some restrictions on bringing alcohol and cigars back into Canada but the limits are quite large. Nate brought about 40 cigars back for himself and some friends.
298 Yes Mark, you DO need to get to Iron House! I loved it and even got Nate reading it on the trip home!
299 Thanks Lori! I find the copyright laws very annoying! I love having ebooks for many reasons and I'll probably still buy some but I'm torn with the fact that I can not lend them out to people. I love being able to share my books.
302 Thanks Kim! I have been taking it about a week now and I don't feel any different but it's probably because I was traveling (& drinking & eating too much & too much sun etc etc :) Hopefully I start to feel a change in the next few weeks
310 From what I understand Lynda Cuba has two different types of Pesos. There is one for tourists and one for residents. The one for tourists is good everywhere I think. You can't change money over to tourists pesos anywhere other than Cuba though so you have to change them back before you leave or you are stuck with them!
And the food was mediocre on this resort but the beverages were excellent! :)
311 That's great to hear Linda! I am loving mine so far!
Thanks Pat, Rhian, Joe, John, Reba, Mamie, Micky, Ellen, Adrienne, Nancy, Calm, Kath, Stasia, Julia, Judy, Katie, Kath, Roni, & Richard!
