Land ho, me hearties! The Dread Pirate Spalding has done it again, and hidden treasure across the land of LibraryThing. And while you're at it, don't forget to switch over to LibraryThing in Pirate, too.

ยปJoin the LibraryThing Treasure Hunt!

Find the treasure chests we've hidden around the site, win a book, or a fabulous LibraryThing t-shirt. Everyone who finds at least 10 treasures will be automatically entered into a drawing for one of 10 prizes!

Update: The hunt is on until Tuesday, Sept. 20th, at 5pm Eastern.

Pretty sure that it's referring to Early Reviewers, but I've been all over those pages and haven't found it. Anyone have any tips?

Members who find at least ten are entered in a drawing for one of ten prizesโ€”five free books from Sherman's Books (up to $25), and five free LibraryThing t-shirts.

I'm a bit embarrassed at my (scant) clue for #16. Here's some additional help:

1. The sailor had a reputation of being unorthodox if not insane
2. He was not a foremast jack
3. He fought in the Quasi-War
4. Served in the United States Navy
5. Surname shared with a Knight of the Round Table

Combine #1 and #2 to get nickname, good enough for an LT search.

Woot! Finally found them all! I didn't come to this thread until about 8pm, at which time I was still missing three: #3, #12 and #16.

I learned some lessons today about search and became more familiar with "local" and "venues." It was incredibly difficult for me to get the name of the place in #3 to show up anywhere!

I thought the difficulty level of this was just about right. I like being stumped somewhat. :)

I am so impressed with the clue-makers, and want to thank each of you for making this a happy day for me. My dad used to organize treasure hunts for my birthdays, so I was having fun thinking of him today.

As for others, 3, 13, and 16 were real stumpers. I always forget about tagmash and I was trying too hard on 13. #3 I found the answer too ages before I got it but for some reason I assumed that it was a tv show that popped up in the Google search and I just sailed right by.

I'm happy with my 14/16. Not in the mood to try for the other two today. But it was fun! (Frustrating, exasperating, and strange, but fun!)

I, too, got a 2014 badge for this treasure hunt. This is a brand-new badge because I didn't have any Buccaneer badges before. So... needs to be updated?

Yeah, I have both the 2014 and 2016 badges now. Not *too* surprised about the 2014 badge since I seem to recall seeing something about the 2014 contest while working on this year's (my first). I think it might have been in the progress banner, which I can't see any more, having gotten all 16 (whew!). #16 was one of my last (last was #3), and I got it by putting all 3 author's names into Google, then plugging the answer into LT and thrashing around a bit. #3 gave me fits. And I didn't help myself by misreading "wench cravin' leanin'" as "wench carvin' leanin'," leading me off into figureheads for a while. I never would have gotten it without hints. Thank you all.

Okay, badges are out, new ones closed. The badge emails appear to have had the wrong badge on them. For the life of me I can't figure out why, but I can't fix it now--the profile ones are rightโ€ฆ

I believe Loranne has a final post, laying out all the answers coming. Then I'll give her a list of everyone who got 10 of them, and she'll do a random drawing.

Thanks for all the hints, i would have stalled at about 4 without them. And great work all the rhymers - my effort paled into comparison (but was fun to provide nonetheless).

I have to apologise for unintentionally making #11 difficult. I goofed when i provided my clue, i gave a link to the author instead of the work i intended. If it's any consolation, I struggled to get the answer to my own clue :/

>404 bnielsen: "Buccaneer Box", "Corsair Coffer", "???"

Hmm. It's got to be something you can put fifteen men on : Dead man's ... deed-box ? ... duffel-bag? ... - not quite right, somehow. Anyway, they've got two years to work it out...

>406 MrAndrew: You had me stumped in a quite different way: your rhyming cetacean with predation made me look it up and realise that I have had entirely the wrong pronunciation (*set-a-SEE-an) in my mind ever since i first met the word, which was presumably when I first read the book in question. Not something that happens to me often! I must have had French cรฉtacรฉ in mind, and have somehow never come across the English word anywhere other than on the printed page.

Aargh. All that stuff about pointy bits has me lost.

So do all these darned clues.

I know what vermin are responsible for #2.

I know I need to go to the "store" but I haven't seen any sign of a "critter" of any kind for #6.

I've known for ages what the darned word is for #8. And that it's a tag, but...

I've figured out more or less where to go for #13.

And I know exactly who the dude is for #16. By both names.

However, none of that information has actually managed to land me on the pages in question, tags or otherwise.
And I've read ALL the clues multiple times. (BTW, anything to do with Justin Timberlake is of no help to me.)

As for #9 and #12, even searching google, people's libraries, and hashtags has failed to give me an actual title.
And as for that "*" store in San Fran... I'm starting to want to pillage it...

I'll admit that I don't really know how to navigate around here too well, as my inability to hide spoilers might indicate, but I've got 8 of the buggers on my own and I'd kind of like to get at least 10. It sucks to get so close with the others and after hours and hours have nothing to show for it too.

So any clues would be Greatly appreciated!

Obviously lots of people love Mad Jack, they just haven't gotten together...

Dutch version of what, the song? Or the cartoon? The song is here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2sBJx-bnTQ

Oh...the cartoon shares a name with Mad Jack, not much else, from what I know. Johnny Percival was a lot more effective than Mad Jack the Pirate! The cartoon in English is here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jayJbc4fr-w

Yes, I realized that when I quit at about 5am. Felt pretty dumb. I guess I thought it was Monday for some reason so the "extension" was until the next day, which would actually have been Wednesday.
So I wasted a lot of time looking for things I'd already gotten the answers to correctly.

It was challenging but fun though and I learned how to navigate LT a bit better as a result too, plus learning more about pirates. Spotted some interesting reads as well.

I'm pretty happy that I managed 8 answers in the few hours I was within the participation time. And would have finished most, if not all, if I'd had the time.

I did better than I thought I would! I'll definitely try to participate again next year.

I wonder if there are similar challenges for other occasions? 4th of July might be fun.

>438 elenchus: Well, I was a Schooner Fare addict for a while. It's kind of faded off - they're still going, but I'm not following the band as such so much. Still love their songs, and listen to/sing them frequently. And frequently am surprised by finding books or other factual information about what they sang (found a book a couple years ago, Dark Tide, about the molasses flood mentioned in their song "Molasses" - though I'd seen a (very) few references to it elsewhere since I first heard the song).
