2025 Spring Treasure Hunt!

1AbigailAdams26
Apr 17, 2025, 3:45 pm

Spring has sprung, and we're hosting a vernal treasure hunt in celebration!

The object of the game is to solve our clues (in verse!) and go to the LibraryThing page each clue is talking about.

Go HERE for the hunt.

You have a little less than two weeks—until Wednesday April 30th at 11:59pm EST—to find all of the seedlings that we've hidden around the site and add them to your patch.

Use this thread to brag, ask for and give hints, etc.

We'll be awarding profile badges to anyone who finds at least two seedlings, and anyone who finds all 12 will be entered into a drawing for some LibraryThing swag.

Helpful tips

Please, use the spoiler tag when posting hints or suggestions. Here's how:

To use the spoiler tag, type the following before whatever you'd like to hide:

I got seven on a quick run through. Several others I have ideas of how to look for.

Well that was easy! I got them all except #9 quickly, using only LT and Talpa search and not having to resort to Google at all. I finally got #9 by thinking of all the general tips and reminders we get for every treasure hunt.

For #12, I used Talpa search for “depression cleaning.”

I had some issues with #1 - reached it via tag mash but it didn't register, went into the series and clicked back to the title and got the banner for it.

Still working on #9, tried tags and classifications and CK and works and scientific names, will keep trying variations.

In case it saves anyone some frustration, I’ve observed that links to works can have two different forms, with or without the title embedded, depending on how you get there, e.g.,

https://www.librarything.com/work/22558593/t/Spring
or
https://www.librarything.com/work/22558593/

It was my experience that only the first form, with the title, works to get the seedling. (And no, that title isn’t the answer to any of the clues!)

Any chance someone could poke at the page's code to adjust the width of the clues? On my screen (narrow/mobile), they're only the width of "Seedling" which is making it tricky to read, with only one or two words each line.

(I switched to desktop view and it changes from a narrow column of clues to a nice grid, but that is still hard to read, with the zoom-scrolling around, alas.)

>7 Charon07: Thank you very much. I had a hard time getting to Talpa. Did find it in a very convoluted way. What is the normal path? Anyway I did the search as you suggested. I tried all the results (several I had already tried) but got no seedlings. What more can I try?

Any clues for #11? I am probably overthinking it but none of the ones the clue makes me think of seems to work...

13Charon07
Apr 17, 2025, 6:16 pm

>11 Micheller7: I usually get to Talpa from “More” in the top menu bar, then scroll down the page a little to find the link to Talpa Search. The Talpa Search link back to LT for a given work doesn’t have the embedded title that I mentioned in >9 Charon07:, so you may have better success just noting the title you want to try and then searching for it on LT directly.

#3 is old, but delightful and there is a faithfully rendered film of it as well.
#12 is a fun read.
#1 is kind of an obsession. I just last month bought three copies of the complete collection, one for me and one each for my daughters, as they love them too. We even have tiny collectibles of the characters.
I’m a nut for Beatrix Potter as well.

Is there a problem with the Seedling page (where your hunt results display) today? Last night when I saw the hunt, I found 9 of the seedlings. I came back this afternoon to look for the rest, and I found two of them. I have 2 pages with a banner showing "You now have 10 out of 12 seedlings" and "You now have 11 out of 12 seedlings" but when I click on "Check on your patch of seedlings", it still says I have 9 seedlings, and the two I just found are not crossed off. Reloading that page does not resolve the problem. What is going on?

ETA: I was writing this up and apparently >53 JBD1: and >54 erinclark: reported the same problem while I was writing my description.

I have the same issue as >53 JBD1:, >54 erinclark:, and >57 erinclark:. When I locate the page, it says I have 11 of 12 seedlings. On the clue page it only shows 8 seedlings. None of the ones I found today have been updated.

I, like several others, have an incorrect display of number of seedlings on the hunt page (3 for me, when I've found 8 thus far; it was accurate, then dropped down to 2, but did update after I found seedling #9), but I wanted to add - if I go back to the pages for seedlings I've already found, it shows me the banner, saying "You found a seedling! You now have 8 out of 12 seedlings." (It does not however make that register on the hunt page.) And it will display the banner every time I go to the appropriate page(s).

I have 13(?) out of 12 after I found seedling#12 and received a banner (You found a seedling! You now have 13 out of 12 seedlings. Check on your patch of seedlings), but seedling #12 does not show as being crossed out on the Treasure Hunt page. Instead, it shows this message (You have 11 seedlings.) I guess I'll check later to see if it appears, and if my total returns to 12 of 12.

76Yamanekotei
Apr 19, 2025, 7:52 am

It does not show any of the seedling for me, even though I found a several so far. It is still “nothing found” but I am sure I received a banner each time I solved.😞

77ImShaunie
Edited: Apr 19, 2025, 8:22 am

“Seedlings found” record keeping and clue strikeouts were all working fine up through my 7th seedling find. Now, no matter if I try re-entering the found books all in a consecutive run or refreshing the page after each re-find, the “found ‘X’ seedlings!” when landing on the correct page isn’t sticking/staying.
I tried giving it an overnight and returning to it the next day as well but that hasn’t worked either.
If I re-enter the finds consecutively the banner will temporarily show that I found 9 but still only 7 seedling “finds” will actually permanently record as found. I am wondering now if I might have found some other clues but the “found” record keeping ‘thing’ didn’t record and I might have been searching quickly and didn’t see the brief notation change in the banner.
I hope my description is understandable.

Has anyone reported this in the Bug Collectors group?

79BookConcierge
Apr 19, 2025, 10:21 am

Yup ... me too.
I got the banner on each one (I keep a paper/pencil list when I work these).

The seedling patch page was updating / striking through just fine. Then suddenly no strike-through for # 10. I thought maybe I hadn't actually clicked on the right page, so I tried it again ... got the banner on the page telling me I'd found a seedling, but the main hunt page did NOT show a strike through.

I thought it might be a caching issue, so I continued with the rest of the search. I got a banner telling me I'd found a seedling on each correct page I hit, but when I went to my seedling patch to see my progress, ALL the strike-throughs for any of the answers that are works have been deleted, and now it says I have only 5 seedlings!

80lemontwist
Apr 19, 2025, 11:40 am

I’m having the same problem: My last seedling has brought me up to 11 out of 12, but on the Hunt page it looks like I have 3 to go. It didn’t credit for #11 and #12. Help!

(I have screenshots - with no spoilers - but don’t know how to include images here…)

It is Easter Sunday. I'm sure it will be quickly fixed once people are back in the office, but today people are busy with church and family.

Me too. 8 seedlings so far, but only 4 showing on the page.

The hint in >7 Charon07: absolutely does not work. The banner when I revisit pages is still showing 10 out of 12 found, regardless of title embedding or no, and the search page is still showing 3. It let me have 6, 7, and 9. I tried "close LT and come back the next day" but that didn't help.

Apr 20, 2025, 2:01 pm

>104 muumi:
You must be talking about >9 Charon07:, not 7. And yes you are right about this does not work. This title isn’t the answer to any of the clues. It let me have 6, 7, and 9, as well as 2 and 4, but nothing else. Other members have the same problem as we are posting the last 30 comments…

What I understand is that the clues #1, 3, 5, 8, 10, 11 and 12 don't get crossed through or receive a seedling even though we find them (and get the banner across the top).

I clicked on my last one and got a message that I had 12 out of 12 seedlings, but when I "Check on my patch of seedlings" I'm told I have only 5 and only 5 little plants show. All the rest are ?s. I've tried refreshing and I've tried using a different browser. Am I the only one with the problem? Maybe I need to reboot. Thanks for a very fun Easter egg hunt! I really enjoyed it! Just to add another data point: I have all 12, the treasure hunt page shows that, and all the clues are (for me) correctly struck through. I didn't keep notes of whether the banners showed correctly, but I don't remember noticing any anomalies. MacBook Pro M2, Sequoia 15.3.2, Safari version 18.2.1, if any of that matters.

I'm only trying to do the hunt, but the sitewide search is so slow it is telling me to go write a book while I wait . . . don't see any site-wide announcement but checked my internet speed and it doesn't seem to be that. I also tried logging out and logging back in.
Is there a site-wide problem with search right now?

This is my first treasure hunt, and I'm absolutely lost. Got #5 easily, but every single other one has been a grind. For the life of me, I can't get #9, even when reading through all the hints. Though, for full disclosure, I just discovered that tags are a thing, but I have no idea how to use them. People who say to "use the tags" have already lost me.

Can anyone give me some hints/tips on how these scavenger hunts work, or what practices I can employ to have better success? I think I'm missing something pretty basic. I'm missing #2, #4, #6, #7, and #9.

Thank you!

>147 ClassicalLibraryGuy: General explanation/hint: When you search for a book, look at the left menu on the result page. See the different categories there? Authors, Common Knowledge, tags and so on? When searching for something that is not a book you start the usual way - start with the search field. But once you land on the result page, you can navigate to these other categories to get results based on that and not based on book titles.

MONDO SPOILER WARNING - I have put the authors I think for the first two (rather than actual title) with a spoiler so DON'T click if you are still searching as they are NOT hints

Q1/A written by Barklem?

Q3/A written by von Arnim?

Of course I could be looking at the wrong books by these authors but I think not, can someone who has the answers already indicate if I should keep looking or if its a 'No Seedlings' issue?

I've used two or three methods to get to the same books and tried refreshing the page but nada??

It's just there no point wasting my time if its not working but I am happy to keep searching if I am just plain wrong....

Hi All! The 2025 Spring Treasure Hunt has now ended. Thank you to all who participated!

We had 1,467 players for this hunt, and 959 players finding at least five clues. The average number of clues found was eight.

Our randomly selected winners for the hunt are:

clrichm
yuki_n
Squeeakers
amuskopf
thereseg

Winners: I will be messaging you about your mailing addresses, so we can get your prizes sent out to you!

Participants who found at least two seedlings: Please be aware that badges are awarded manually, and may not appear in your badges for some time.

Regarding the banner: the developers are still aware of the ongoing problems with the banner's appearance, and the fact that dismissing it once sometimes seems to dismiss it forever, despite the member's wishes/preferences. The issue is on the list of things to be looked at, although I have no timeline to give on a resolution.
