Leo Tolstoy (1828–1910)
Author of Anna Karenina
About the Author
Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy was born on September 9, 1828 in Russia. He is usually referred to as Leo Tolstoy. He was a Russian author who is regarded as one of the greatest authors of all time. Leo Tolstoy is best known for his novels War and Peace (1869) and Anna Karenina (1877). Tolstoy's show more fiction includes dozens of short stories and several novellas such as The Death of Ivan Ilyich, Family Happiness, and Hadji Murad. He also wrote plays and numerous philosophical essays. Tolstoy had a profound moral crisis and spiritual awakening in the 1870's which he outlined in his work, A Confession. His literal interpretation of the ethical teachings of Jesus, centering on the Sermon on the Mount, caused him to become a fervent Christian anarchist and pacifist. His ideas of nonviolent resistance which he shared in his works The Kingdom of God is Within You, had a profund impact on figures such as Mohandas Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. On September 23, 1862 Tolstoy married Sophia Andreevna Behrs. She was the daughter of a court physician. They had 13 children, eight of whom survived childhood. Their early married life allowed Tolstoy much freedom to compose War and Peace and Anna Karenina with his wife acting as his secretary and proofreader. The Tolstoy family left Russia in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution and the subsequent establishment of the Soviet Union. Leo Tolstoy's relatives and descendants moved to Sweden, Germany, the United Kingdom, France and the United States. Tolstoy died of pneumonia at Astapovo train station, after a day's rail journey south on November 20, 1910 at the age of 82. (Bowker Author Biography) Count Leo Tolstoy was born in 1828 on the family estate of Yasnaya Polyana in the Tula province. He married in 1862 & was the father of 13 children. Tolstoy managed the estate of Yasnaya Polyana & ran its peasant schools, while writing his great novels, "War & Peace" (1869) & "Anna Karenina" (1877). He died in 1910. (Publisher Provided) show less

- Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (9 September 1828 – 20 November 1910), usually referred to in English as Leo Tolstoy, was a Russian writer who is regarded as one of the greatest authors of all time. He received multiple nominations for the Nobel Prize in Literature every year from 1902 to 1906 and nominations for Nobel Peace Prize in 1901, 1902 and 1910 and the fact that he never won is a major Nobel prize controversy.
Born to an aristocratic Russian family in 1828, he is best known for the novels War and Peace (1869) and Anna Karenina (1877), often cited as pinnacles of realist fiction. He first achieved literary acclaim in his twenties with his semi-autobiographical trilogy, Childhood, Boyhood, and Youth (1852–1856), and Sevastopol Sketches (1855), based upon his experiences in the Crimean War. Tolstoy's fiction includes dozens of short stories and several novellas such as The Death of Ivan Ilyich (1886), Family Happiness (1859), and Hadji Murad (1912). He also wrote plays and numerous philosophical essays.
In the 1870s Tolstoy experienced a profound moral crisis, followed by what he regarded as an equally profound spiritual awakening, as outlined in his non-fiction work A Confession (1882). His literal interpretation of the ethical teachings of Jesus, centering on the Sermon on the Mount, caused him to become a fervent Christian anarchist and pacifist. Tolstoy's ideas on nonviolent resistance, expressed in such works as The Kingdom of God Is Within You (1894), had a profound impact on such pivotal 20th-century figures as Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. Tolstoy also became a dedicated advocate of Georgism, the economic philosophy of Henry George, which he incorporated into his writing, particularly Resurrection (1899). - Cause of death

Reviews
This is the first classic that I've read this year that is getting added to my all-time favorites. This book does it for me, and I think it is because I have learned so much about the psychology of so many groups of people. I learned how the rich justify being rich, how the poor justify being poor, how cheaters justify their infidelity, how men justify their work passions, among so many others.
The characters in this story don't choose sides between good and evil, with the exception of two show more characters. The namesake character Anna Karenina is the embodiment of self-absorbed, arrogant, and uncaring evil. She ruins another life every time she does something, and she knows this. To counter this, Konstantin Levin, despite being a wealthy landowner, shows the good that can come from high society. He is devoted to his wife and child, to his work, and to his workers.
The landscape is breathtaking, and every single location that is explored has its importance. Within the cities of Moscow and Petersburg, the bustle of the people that seems to avoid the highest of society shows how these people lived as opposed to the rest of the Russian people. The constant balls and concerts and galleries that the rich are expected to enjoy is in stark contrast to the poverty of the "muzhik" (peasant). I can see why communism was allowed to explode in a place like this. The country in this story shows an unfiltered beauty that can come from toil and diligent work, while exploring how the high society exploit their land in any and every way. Hunting is a common affair, walking hundreds of acres is a break from the affairs that fill the household, and passions of the landowner are able to be explored. The class divide is stark, but due to Levin's character, is not something that is unbearably cruel.
This book taught me more than most college courses I have taken. From writing technique, to psychology, to religion, to love, this book sets out to teach right and wrong. And it does just that. show less

My first Tolstoy.
A book about death, which suits my tastes perfectly (Disclaimer: I have a morbid obsession with the concept of death).
Having witnessed first-hand a dear family member struggle with death exactly one year ago, I couldn't have read this book at a better time. It is bewildering how we only recognize the inevitability of death and the mortality of our fickle selves when we finally face it, or when someone dear passes away. Only then would we realize how close death is lurking, show more and how life was nothing but a constant struggle with death.
Tolstoy accurately describes what it is like to face death slowly but surely moving towards you. How you cling to life with every speck of hope you can muster out of your feeble self but then when death unveils itself to you, you embrace it and wait for it. But death still mocks you. How your loved ones continue believing there is hope; that you can be saved from its clutches. But only you know the truth. You urge death on to get its job done; to rid yourself of the humility of being weak; of seeing your loved ones' pity and how much of a liability you have become to them now.
I was particularly drawn to the transformation of Ivan Ilych's character from a man obsessed with life (and its minute details) to the entire opposite. It is that critical point of time in one's life that I continuously ponder on. As perplexing and mysterious the ways of death are, I think to be human is not only to recognize one's mortality, but to contemplate it and to embrace it.

“The strongest of all warriors are these two—Time and Patience”
The above lines of War and Peace aptly describe my experience of completing this behemoth of a Russian epic. As a kid, I had an understanding that one may call oneself a true literature aficionado, or a bibliophile if one can accomplish reading a classic endowed with a page count of at least a thousand pages. Over the years, that conception has been greatly altered. I have come to the realisation that some books can say a show more lot more in a few pages than the others that fail to enrapture or engage even with enormous word counts. That being said, if you feel I’m digressing from the main point of this review, then I am not. Because War and Peace takes the cake for quintessential literature that balances a character driven storyline along with pages, and pages of philosophical digressions. But while reading the book, if you ever feel disheartened by the latter, just remember the first quote and bear with it, because when Tolstoy’s not filling his pages with his deep (a convenient term for concepts where you feel you’re out of depth) philosophical meditations on the nature of war and the inevitability of life and fate, he is concocting few of the most iconic and human characters.
Set in Tsarist Russia amidst the Napoleonic war, the novel is set over a period of seven years (fourteen if you count the epilogue) from 1805 to 1812. Alternating between the setting of posh social gatherings of Moscow and St. Petersburg, and battlegrounds of Austria, Poland, and eventually Russia, the book gives an insight into the lives of Russian nobility as they go through the tumultuous period of war, and peace, and war again. But the core of this epic, in my opinion, is formed by the fictitious characters that Tolstoy sketches and places in this historical settings. Characters such as Pierre Bezukhov, Andrei and Marie Bolkonsky, Natasha Rostov are some of the deeply human characters, each with their own shade of grey. They are flawed people, and trying to make sense of the situation that has been thrust upon them in a war torn Russia. Bezukhov’s search for meaning and virtue, balancing his hedonistic tendencies and his inner conscience to become a better human is a beautiful arc in the novel. There are also some of the famous historical figures presented as characters in the novel such as Napoleon, Kuzutov, Tsar Alexander, and more. Apart from the intermittent meanderings by Tolstoy regarding his commentary on significant historical battles and futility of wondering “what ifs” that sometime leave you exhausted, my primary complaint from his magnum opus is the incomplete ending that leaves much to be desired. Over the book, Tolstoy introduces a plethora of personalities, even provides us with their background, given them a personality of their own, with their ambitions, their flaws. But at end of the story, refuses to give us even a hint about their fates, which as you must agree, is quite frustrating, and feels almost akin to betrayal.
It took me a period of a year to complete this book. That says a lot about me than what it says about the book, though. But in all seriousness, this is a book that does demand your time and patience. Rarely will you find a piece of literature that combines history, philosophy and drama with such richness in detail.

Here are a few more quotes from the book that I found memorable and insightful, in the hope that it may nudge you on that path of wanting to read this book:
“Pure and complete sorrow is as impossible as pure and complete joy.”
“The whole world is divided for me into two parts: one is she, and there is all happiness, hope, and light; the other is where she is not, and there is dejection and darkness.”
“A man on a thousand-mile walk has to forget his goal and say to himself every morning, ‘Today I’m going to cover twenty-five miles and then rest up and sleep.’”
“If everyone fought for their own convictions, there would be no war.”
“We can know only that we know nothing. And that is the highest degree of human wisdom.” show less

Patriotism & Government suffers, through no fault of its own, of being a product of its time. Its references to Christianity being the pinnacle of human morality has been proven wrong again and again (which Tolstoy alludes to being a possibility through the incorporation of a quote from an American source).
Beyond that, Tolstoy frequently groups taxation and the press (and even teachers) in with the evils of the state. This is a problem because these ideas have been so twisted and are used so show more pervasively by the insidious nationalist forces of today that the text runs the risk of being perverted into something it is not, namely an individualist, religiously motivated social-Darwinian pillar, a call to eliminate 'other' states while enabling the 'right' one. No statist patriot today likes taxation or journalists or professors; quite the opposite, they are their strongest opposers. Nor do they uphold Christianity as a peaceful, non-statist force; they use it as an exclusionary club to weed out patriots from non-patriots. Not only that, the taxation, press and educators of today are hardly exclusively statist enforcers.
Tolstoy is actually calling for internationalism, unity of people the world over, and makes some remarkably prescient observations (the virtues of feminism and vegetarianism come to mind) while even alluding to elements of intersectionality, but frequently falls back on Christianity to justify his positions. This makes this text difficult for young people without their first having had lots of time devoted to pre-teaching serious critical thinking and close reading skills in regard to such specific aspects of it.
Further, while very possibly an effect of translation, his frequent invocation of 'evil' is particularly jarring. Scholars today are very wary of applying moral certitudes to complex social structures, and rightfully so. In fact, his use of the word makes it very easy to twist the text into a moralistic pretext for violence, the very thing he hopes to eradicate, for why should something 'evil' be allowed to exist for even another moment?
Anyway, this has been rambly. Taxation is not evil. Yes, much of one's taxes being given to the military-industrial complex is wildly dangerous and violent and should be opposed, but a refusal to pay for public schooling, green public works and healthcare is not something to be praised. This distinction is one that needs to be made but unfortunately isn't in Patriotism & Government (because, of course, in the era in which it was written, these ideas did not yet exist).
Very much want to rate this higher, namely because I agree that patriotism is a great danger in the world, but the text's easy opportunity for being twisted into something it isn't and thus its limited usefulness in moving the progressive conversation further forward without extreme attention to context makes me wary to do so. show less
