Happy Valentine's Day! It's February 14th, and the Valentine Hunt has returned!
The object of the game is to solve our clues (in verse!) and go to the LibraryThing page each clue is talking about.
Go HERE for the hunt.
You have two weeks—until Monday February 28th at 5.00 pm EST—to find all the arrows hidden around the site and get them into your quiver.
Use this thread to brag, ask for and give hints, etc.
In a change from previous hunts, where only one was required, we'll be awarding profile badges to anyone who finds at least two arrows. As in previous years, anyone who finds all 17 will be entered into a drawing for a LibraryThing coaster set and sticker.

Thanks for doing this. It is a lot of fun, although I think I am not going to get very many. I have four now and think I can get a couple more, but certainly will not get all 17!
4susanbooks
Argh (I know; wrong hunt). After a first pass, I got 10 arrows. I also feel like I know 4, 12, & 13 but I can't figure out what pages they're on. Harrumph! The other 4 are just ???????
5yoyogod
I found 2 a bit confusing. From the wording, I thought I was looking for the poet, but I got the arrow from the poem.
6susanbooks
Yoyogod, Yeah, I clicked & reclicked on the poet a few times, too.
8raidergirl3
>4 susanbooks: yeah, 4 and 12 are just being finicky I think.
#4 should be romance, but it's not the tag. I've tried the plural as well
#12 I feel like I tried every version of 'Place' for Venice, even tried the tag
Hoping these are glitches so I'll come back to them later

Is #5 supposed to say "carves," or is that a typo for "craves"?
21susanbooks
5, 8, 11, 12, & 16 are baffling me
Thanks for the encouragement on 4 >14 yoyogod:. I had been looking there, but not persevering. Your hint determined me to keep keeping on & I got it.

UPDATE: FOUND!!!! Big thank you to all who helped. Now for freakin' 8.
So I'm certain I know what 4 is AND I see two clues that it ison a genre page BUT, and this may be ridiculous and I can't help but feel I'm overlooking something obvious, I don't know how to locate any genre pages . I've looked under classification but that's really not working out since I keep ending up at the romance languages part of Dewey Decimal and the LC is not giving me an arrow.
What am I missing?

51Foretopman
For #7, "sixty years" clearly lines up with the RoNA of the Romantic Novelists Association but I've tried every tag and CK Award variation of those that I can think of. What am I missing?

I've gotten all but #8 (even the tagmash didn't help), and #1. The answer is blindingly obvious, but I can't find how it applies - not CK character, not book, not author, not...help? Also maybe format - title, abbreviated title, nothing, what?
79jjmcgaffey
OK, got #8, the hard way - click on every title in the tagmash, darn it. Haven't read it, don't really want to.

I needed help from the hive mind for a few (many thanks) and was finally just stuck on 14. I just clicked and swiped for few minutes then returned to the hunt page to find that I'd found the final arrow.

Got 'em all, breezed through most but needed the hints for #4, 5 and 8. I immediately had the correct word for 4 but could not find the right place to use it! It is not always about what we think about a book - sometimes it is about what other people think about them. That's part of the beauty of the hunts - see LT from a different perspective.

Where can I see the badges that are earned in these hunts?
I participated in the Halloween hunt, and even though I cracked all the riddles, I never saw the pumpkin I was supposed to have won anywhere.

It took me a while to get a correct name of it. After that it was a lot easier. The point we have this hunt is to explore LibraryThing in a fun fashion, not to collect treasures so when I learn something new, it is ok with me. With this, I learned that there is a Genre column for each book. That is what I didn’t even notice before even though it occupies pretty big chunk of the screen. 😳

13 out of 17 not too shabby (over 2-day period)- but stuck on #7 and #16. I thought I knew the answers but my search did not result in an "arrow".
This was my first time doing this and found it amazingly fantastic! It is a great way to start my day while I sip my tea and start up my brain to write the next chapter of my life. I cannot wait to see the answers to the ones I missed.

I have the same complaint that I always do. I know many of the answers, but don't know how to connect them with things on Library Thing unless they are works.
I've decided to just content myself with knowing and not to suffer the frustration of not being able to find the answer.
Several people last month gave me much-appreciated hints which I employed, but still no joy.
I would however like to know where the famous quote is. If someone could post a message on my wall, that would be great.
I can recite the whole quote, I know the author and the play, but where the arrow is entirely escapes me.
Thanks

>199 Kathleen828: Part of the idea of the hunts is to learn about LT by exploring while looking for things. Find places you did not know exist on the site, click on links and menus you never checked before. The deciphering is half the game. The other part is getting more familiar with the site.

In general ... put the answer you think it is in the "search library thing" box in upper right. The page you'll get usually defaults to works ... BUT ... on the left hand side of the page you see other options. Might be a tag or an author. Sometimes you have to click the options on the left to get further options. For example, click on COMMON KNOWLEDGE and you'll get links for Awards, Characters or Places.

>201 Kathleen828: So put the answer you think is the correct one in the search field of LT. Then look at the search page - see that left menu? Start exploring. Click on books that seem likely, click on authors, click on tags and common knowledge. When you get to a page you had never seen before, look around it - click on things that look interesting. If you think you got it but it does not seem to register, look again - for example on the tag page - is that the only one that matches? What if you try another one? If something is a name, check Characters, book names, authors, tags. And so on.
So let's take #6: Read the clue very carefully. I am sure you know the answer but... did you take into account all the pieces in there. Look at that list of results (tags if you had not figured out which list - a lot of answers will be there). There is one obvious. And then there is one that fits better. (blossoms, they ). Did you find it now?
Then on the next hunt, it will be easier because you know these places. And in the meantime, these places show you new ways to use the site.
If your stance is: "I don't know where to look so I won't even try", noone can help you. But if you are willing to explore, it can be fun. Look at all the clues above for the ones you still cannot find and see if you can string together a solution.
As I said - knowing the answer is half of the game :)

>1 AbigailAdams26: Hello. The Valentine's Day scavenger hunt is my second attempt at managing, somehow, to play this online game, but instead of getting better at it (are there rules somewhere? How do I know this?), I seem hopelessly stuck on the page with the clues. No matter what I do, or where I place my little cursor, I either get nowhere, or I find myself looking at a list of my own books (I think) -- which list is currently blank, because I can't quite figure out what LibraryThing actually is, or what I'm supposed to do next. By the way, I'm not an extraordinarily dense and stupid person (or at least I don't think I am), but I feel like the goofy new kid, on the school playground at recess, who's either mocked by the other kids, or totally ignored. Also, for clarity's sake, I also seem to be the guy whose computer does (usually unhelpful) things no one else has ever seen a computer do before. Guidance, if available, would be appreciated. I love the idea of an on-line community, but not if it just involves me feeling stupid all the time. Thanks.

>262 WalterZ: Hi Walter!
The point of the scavenger hunts is to take you places in LT that aren't your own books. The best starting place for a scavenger hunt is usually the Search Librarything box in the upper right corner of every page. (In your catalog you'll see two searches in that corner, you want the top one.)
When you have search results, there will be a bunch of different options on the left side. Exploring all those options is a great education in how to use LT's sitewide search and what information is available! Usually the answer for the hunt comes up as a result for one of those options. If you click through the search result pages, you know you found the correct page when a bar appears at the top of the screen saying you found an arrow.
You shouldn't feel stupid! Part of the point of the search is to get you trying things you don't know yet and learning them.
(This hunt does have a couple of tough ones that you can't get through site search, and even experienced users asked for help with those up in this thread, but most of them you can find that way.)

>262 WalterZ: Welcome to LibraryThing, Walter!
Step 1: Make sure you are signed in to LT (LibraryThing.) You say you are on your computer (vs. mobile) so look at the way top of your screen on the right. You'll see this...
See where it says "Morphidae?" You should see your user name there. If not, you need to sign in.
LibraryThing is a website for people who love books! You say that your list of books is blank. Have you started cataloging the books you own? If not, that is why it shows as blank. If you have, we'll have to do more trouble shooting.
As far as the game is concerned, if you have an idea for one of the clues, put your cursor in the box under the set of words that begin with your user name and ends with the word "Help" as in the graphic above. (It also has the text, "Search LibraryThing," in faint gray.) Then hit Enter or click on the magnifying glass next to it and you'll be on your way!
Let us know how that works and then we can give you more help as needed.

>262 WalterZ: Welcome, Walter! I'm glad you found us, but sad to learn that you feel like the awkward new kid. That's normal, I think, when doing something new.
It looks like you've been given some good advice already, by melannen and Morphidae. I would reiterate that the point of the hunt (well, one of them, anyway) is to explore the LibraryThing site, and discover some of the many things we have to offer.
There were so many parts of the site that were unfamiliar to me, before I became a staffer, and even now, there's always more to discover! Good luck with the hunt!

>262 WalterZ: I totally understand your frustration. I felt that way last time. I was surprised that this time I found several on my own. Then with hints from others here I actually found all but one or two. The site is definitely not the easiest to navigate.
269Morphidae
>262 WalterZ: >268 BettyTaylor56: I've been on the website almost since the beginning and I *still* have issues finding things, especially new stuff like Genres (think I finally have that one down now.)

>262 WalterZ: One more small clarification - the hunt is not for things hidden ON the page of the hunt itself - as some other sites do. Think of it as a puzzle/crossword with clues on the side. The page is just the clue list/working area - there is nothing you need to click on that page itself. Once you think you know an answer, you need to find the answer on the site - it can be a page anywhere on the site.
As >265 Morphidae: said, the easiest way is to start from the search box with a solution you think you have and go from there.
Welcome to LT!
>262 WalterZ: I can't quite figure out what LibraryThing actually is, or what I'm supposed to do next.
Whatever you want to make it :) You can just hang out in Talk and talk about books. Or you can use it to catalog your library and/or part of your library. Had you gone through the introduction tour: https://www.librarything.com/tour/1 and the quickstart: https://www.librarything.com/quickstart.php - it won't necessarily help with the hunt but should give you some ideas of what we are.

.... I'm late, but thankfully not too late to play! I've only just started but I have to smile at #2, that was a poem I memorized for school in grade school and I still remember every word. Wonderful memories there.
273stringcat3
>257 kpagan: Thanks so much! I *did* search on that award but evidently didn't hit the right page. Finally: #7! Done!
274crazy4reading
I found them all with help of the hints. Some I found and I don't even know how I did it. I just found this hunt yesterday and so happy I was able to participate.

>262 WalterZ: I learn something each time I do one of these hunts. I find authors and books that are new to me.
Get 2 of them and you will get a badge. You can read about the badges on LT.
Read about LibraryThing, what is offered, and join some groups.
I use the Talk and during the hunts and there are some great suggestions about where to search.
Welcome.

I only have one more to go! Terribly stuck on #16. I know its not snails, and all else I can think of is maybe frogs?
277AnnieMod
>276 toast_and_tea: One carries its house, the other does not . In some languages, there is just one word for the two.

>53 Zoes_Human: I am still stuck on #7 even though I am sure I am on the right track and have followed hints! I feel as if I am missing something obvious! I got all the others, though! Really didn't think I would because they seemed a bit harder than in the past.

Wow. A few of these were difficult, but I got all of them. Thanks for the great hints. Thanks, LibraryThing for another great hunt!!
282tammyhennig
That was fun! Was able to get most of them last week. Today, I still had like 5 left to figure out and got all of them after a while, whew! Now I have 17 arrows! :)
Looking forward to the next one!

I got them all, but I'm not really sure how. Some I was pretty sure what they were looking for but I'm not sure which pages I clicked on to make it stick. I hope at the end they will display all the answers. lol
284keepfitz
Is there a link to answers after hunt ends? I managed to get all 17 this timw but in the past haven't always gotten all the clues and would have liked to know what the answers were.
286Lizzardicus-Spork
Mission accomplished! 17 arrows!
*eagerly awaits new badge* Lol 😜
Some of those were--oooof, if you don't read these genres, like, at all--haha, I had to sleuth outside-the-box!

Late to the party, struggled a bit but got there in the end - thanks to those who shared clues generously!
Thanks also to LT for another fun treasure hunt, and to conceptDawg for the bird illustration - it’s a beauty!

@abigailadams26 do you know how many managed to find all of the clues? Fun stats! ☺️

>290 avanders: The completion rate was 21%, so about 745 members found all clues. :)
292robertwmartin
>291 kristilabrie: Is this saying that about 3500 people started the event and that 745 finished it? Sorry if I am being obtuse.

I am brand new to LT (just joined last week!) and thought this Hunt was an interesting introduction to the site! lol I did eventually find all of them (with the help of a couple hints--thank you!!). I'm still trying to figure the website out and I keep stumbling across some cool features. So far, so good! Which leads me to....
A quick question: Where do the profile badges appear? I don't seem to have one, even though I found all the clues... Unless they haven't been awarded yet? Or I'm looking in the wrong place..

294PawsforThought
>293 RaeCreated: They show up on your profile page. But they’re not awarded automatically - you’ll get it when LT staff send them out. That could be tomorrow and it could be 8 months from now.
295kristilabrie
>292 robertwmartin: Correct.

Hi Abigail, I don't believe I got credit for the 7 arrows that I did find. I could be mistaken, in which case, where do I find them? This is in regards to the Valintine's day contest. Thom
298AbigailAdams26
>297 thosgpetri: Hi Thom. When you say that you haven't gotten credit, do you mean that you have not yet received your badge? If so, the badges are assigned manually, and will be awarded to you on your profile page (although I'm not sure exactly when that will be).
299krazy4katz
>297 thosgpetri: Just to let you know, none of us have gotten our badges for the Treasure Hunt before this one yet. So, yes, it can take a while. :-)

Yay, thank you for the Cucurbit Cockade 2021 Halloween Hunt and Toxophily Token 2022 Valentine's Treasure Hunt badges!

>301 humouress: Me too!
304Shookie
I swear I click on something and it doesn't show an arrow then later I come back and it does! Thank you to all of you who left clues for the tough ones!
