2022 Valentine Treasure Hunt

1AbigailAdams26
Edited: Feb 14, 2022, 2:40 pm

Happy Valentine's Day! It's February 14th, and the Valentine Hunt has returned!

The object of the game is to solve our clues (in verse!) and go to the LibraryThing page each clue is talking about.

Go HERE for the hunt.

You have two weeks—until Monday February 28th at 5.00 pm EST—to find all the arrows hidden around the site and get them into your quiver.

Use this thread to brag, ask for and give hints, etc.

In a change from previous hunts, where only one was required, we'll be awarding profile badges to anyone who finds at least two arrows. As in previous years, anyone who finds all 17 will be entered into a drawing for a LibraryThing coaster set and sticker.

Helpful tips

Please, use the spoiler tag when posting hints or suggestions. Here's how:

To use the spoiler tag, type the following before whatever you'd like to hide:

<spoiler>

And this, at the end of what's hidden:

</spoiler>

Thanks for doing this. It is a lot of fun, although I think I am not going to get very many. I have four now and think I can get a couple more, but certainly will not get all 17!

I got an arrow banner for #2 but it doesn't show on the clue page.

Argh (I know; wrong hunt). After a first pass, I got 10 arrows. I also feel like I know 4, 12, & 13 but I can't figure out what pages they're on. Harrumph! The other 4 are just ???????

5yoyogod

I found 2 a bit confusing. From the wording, I thought I was looking for the poet, but I got the arrow from the poem.

Yoyogod, Yeah, I clicked & reclicked on the poet a few times, too.

>4 susanbooks: yeah, 4 and 12 are just being finicky I think.
#4 should be romance, but it's not the tag. I've tried the plural as well
#12 I feel like I tried every version of 'Place' for Venice, even tried the tag
Hoping these are glitches so I'll come back to them later

UPDATE: FOUND!!!! Big thank you to all who helped. Now for freakin' 8.

So I'm certain I know what 4 is AND I see two clues that it is on a genre page BUT, and this may be ridiculous and I can't help but feel I'm overlooking something obvious, I don't know how to locate any genre pages. I've looked under classification but that's really not working out since I keep ending up at the romance languages part of Dewey Decimal and the LC is not giving me an arrow.

What am I missing?

There may have been a better way to do this but I know nothing about the romance genre.

>120 laytonwoman3rd: And the clue does not say it needs to be? :) And if a clue in a Valentine hunt has nothing to do with Valentine or love, you kinda check if adding one of them as an extra clue won't help - otherwise why would that clue be in THIS hunt :) Or at least that's how my mind deciphered that one - and people apparently had tagged it for that so it worked out.

It is not always about what we think about a book - sometimes it is about what other people think about them. That's part of the beauty of the hunts - see LT from a different perspective.

Hello.
Where can I see the badges that are earned in these hunts?
I participated in the Halloween hunt, and even though I cracked all the riddles, I never saw the pumpkin I was supposed to have won anywhere.
Thank you very much, greetings.

>121 AnnieMod: No, it doesn't. My reference was to lorax's comment that they "know nothing about the romance genre". I did not think of "romance" as a help for this clue, and I was surprised to see how prominent it was in the tag cloud for this work. So, that's proof that what you say is so true. But I'm pretty sure I was never going to make the necessary connection on No. 8!

I have a question that's only tangentially related to the hunt, but I'll put under a spoiler tag because it would be one for #7. Is there a way I'm missing to filter for Genre in the site search? I have the same complaint that I always do. I know many of the answers, but don't know how to connect them with things on Library Thing unless they are works.
I've decided to just content myself with knowing and not to suffer the frustration of not being able to find the answer.
Several people last month gave me much-appreciated hints which I employed, but still no joy.
I would however like to know where the famous quote is. If someone could post a message on my wall, that would be great.
I can recite the whole quote, I know the author and the play, but where the arrow is entirely escapes me.
Thanks

In general ... put the answer you think it is in the "search library thing" box in upper right. The page you'll get usually defaults to works ... BUT ... on the left hand side of the page you see other options. Might be a tag or an author. Sometimes you have to click the options on the left to get further options. For example, click on COMMON KNOWLEDGE and you'll get links for Awards, Characters or Places.

Feb 18, 2022, 1:40 pm

>201 Kathleen828: So put the answer you think is the correct one in the search field of LT. Then look at the search page - see that left menu? Start exploring. Click on books that seem likely, click on authors, click on tags and common knowledge. When you get to a page you had never seen before, look around it - click on things that look interesting. If you think you got it but it does not seem to register, look again - for example on the tag page - is that the only one that matches? What if you try another one? If something is a name, check Characters, book names, authors, tags. And so on.

So let's take #6: Read the clue very carefully. I am sure you know the answer but... did you take into account all the pieces in there. Look at that list of results (tags if you had not figured out which list - a lot of answers will be there). There is one obvious. And then there is one that fits better. (blossoms, they). Did you find it now?

Then on the next hunt, it will be easier because you know these places. And in the meantime, these places show you new ways to use the site.

If your stance is: "I don't know where to look so I won't even try", noone can help you. But if you are willing to explore, it can be fun. Look at all the clues above for the ones you still cannot find and see if you can string together a solution.

As I said - knowing the answer is half of the game :)

And how do you collect the arrows. I found one - I think. Tried clicking on arrow hunt - went back to the main page. Only other clickable thing was dismiss and that dropped the banner, but didn't make any change to my arrow collection. So I'm really confused.

>243 sumpter-girls: If you open the correct page, you will get a banner telling you that you found the arrow. You don't need to do anything else special - no clicking and collecting required.

If you did not see that, you are not on the correct page for that clue - it may be the correct answer but there is another page which is similar but fitting the clue better. :)

Never did a LT treasure hunt before. Very fun! Thanks to those who put it together and to all the patient folks in this thread you provided searching tips and hints. In some cases I got the answer right away (once I knew what to look for); in some I knew the answer, but didn't know how to look for it; and in a few I really needed the hints, as I was going in a totally wrong direction. I certainly have a better understanding of searching on LT than I did before.

Thanks again to all!

Thanks so much for another fun LT Hunt. I got all my arrows, some of them took a while. I needed hints for 4 them, even after trying Google and Wikipedia searches. I learned, again, how to do tagmashes. For some reason I forget how that works every time I try to do it. Eventually it will stick.

>1 AbigailAdams26: Hello. The Valentine's Day scavenger hunt is my second attempt at managing, somehow, to play this online game, but instead of getting better at it (are there rules somewhere? How do I know this?), I seem hopelessly stuck on the page with the clues. No matter what I do, or where I place my little cursor, I either get nowhere, or I find myself looking at a list of my own books (I think) -- which list is currently blank, because I can't quite figure out what LibraryThing actually is, or what I'm supposed to do next. By the way, I'm not an extraordinarily dense and stupid person (or at least I don't think I am), but I feel like the goofy new kid, on the school playground at recess, who's either mocked by the other kids, or totally ignored. Also, for clarity's sake, I also seem to be the guy whose computer does (usually unhelpful) things no one else has ever seen a computer do before. Guidance, if available, would be appreciated. I love the idea of an on-line community, but not if it just involves me feeling stupid all the time. Thanks.

>262 WalterZ: Hi Walter!

The point of the scavenger hunts is to take you places in LT that aren't your own books. The best starting place for a scavenger hunt is usually the Search Librarything box in the upper right corner of every page. (In your catalog you'll see two searches in that corner, you want the top one.)

When you have search results, there will be a bunch of different options on the left side. Exploring all those options is a great education in how to use LT's sitewide search and what information is available! Usually the answer for the hunt comes up as a result for one of those options. If you click through the search result pages, you know you found the correct page when a bar appears at the top of the screen saying you found an arrow.

You shouldn't feel stupid! Part of the point of the search is to get you trying things you don't know yet and learning them.

(This hunt does have a couple of tough ones that you can't get through site search, and even experienced users asked for help with those up in this thread, but most of them you can find that way.)

>262 WalterZ: Welcome to LibraryThing, Walter!

Step 1: Make sure you are signed in to LT (LibraryThing.) You say you are on your computer (vs. mobile) so look at the way top of your screen on the right. You'll see this...

See where it says "Morphidae?" You should see your user name there. If not, you need to sign in.

LibraryThing is a website for people who love books! You say that your list of books is blank. Have you started cataloging the books you own? If not, that is why it shows as blank. If you have, we'll have to do more trouble shooting.

As far as the game is concerned, if you have an idea for one of the clues, put your cursor in the box under the set of words that begin with your user name and ends with the word "Help" as in the graphic above. (It also has the text, "Search LibraryThing," in faint gray.) Then hit Enter or click on the magnifying glass next to it and you'll be on your way!

Let us know how that works and then we can give you more help as needed.

ETA: clarification

>262 WalterZ: Welcome, Walter! I'm glad you found us, but sad to learn that you feel like the awkward new kid. That's normal, I think, when doing something new.

It looks like you've been given some good advice already, by melannen and Morphidae. I would reiterate that the point of the hunt (well, one of them, anyway) is to explore the LibraryThing site, and discover some of the many things we have to offer.

There were so many parts of the site that were unfamiliar to me, before I became a staffer, and even now, there's always more to discover! Good luck with the hunt!

>262 WalterZ: One more small clarification - the hunt is not for things hidden ON the page of the hunt itself - as some other sites do. Think of it as a puzzle/crossword with clues on the side. The page is just the clue list/working area - there is nothing you need to click on that page itself. Once you think you know an answer, you need to find the answer on the site - it can be a page anywhere on the site.

As >265 Morphidae: said, the easiest way is to start from the search box with a solution you think you have and go from there.

Welcome to LT!

>262 WalterZ: I can't quite figure out what LibraryThing actually is, or what I'm supposed to do next.

Whatever you want to make it :) You can just hang out in Talk and talk about books. Or you can use it to catalog your library and/or part of your library. Had you gone through the introduction tour: https://www.librarything.com/tour/1 and the quickstart: https://www.librarything.com/quickstart.php - it won't necessarily help with the hunt but should give you some ideas of what we are.
