2022 Halloween Treasure Hunt

1AbigailAdams26
Oct 14, 2022, 5:15 pm

It's October, and the Halloween Hunt has returned!

The object of the game is to solve our clues (in verse!) and go to the LibraryThing page each clue is talking about.

Go HERE for the hunt.

You have about two and a half weeks—until Monday October 31st at 11.59 pm Eastern Time—to find all the ghosts hidden around the site and gather them all together into one hauntourage.

Use this thread to brag, ask for and give hints, etc.

We will be awarding profile badges to anyone who finds at least two ghosts, and anyone who finds all 15 will be entered into a drawing for a LibraryThing coaster set and sticker.

Helpful tips

Please, use the spoiler tag when posting hints or suggestions. Here's how:

To use the spoiler tag, type the following before whatever you'd like to hide:

<spoiler>

And this, at the end of what's hidden:

</spoiler>

If the hunt isn't working for you

You might be using the old version of the LibraryThing site. Is the nav bar at the top of the page salmon/peach colored? That's the old site. Go here to change your design. You can switch back afterwards.

Yay, so excited!

I found Ghost #4 where I expected it to be and received a notification that I found a ghost, but the corresponding clue wasn't crossed off my list. Possible bug?

I have got them all - didn't have to come in here for any extra hints - and my top of page banners read "You found a ghost! You now have 15 out of 15 ghosts. Check on your hauntourage of ghosts." but the Treasure Hunt page still says "You have 14 ghosts." and shows number four as not guessed, even though I definitely got it - it was the 3rd clue I guessed. I've been back to that page it's the only Group in the answers several times and it shows as discovered there. Will it record me having completed the whole hunt?

EDIT:
Nevermind, I should have read the hints in here, I now have 16 our of 15 ghosts and it's showing as done :)

>105 varielle: Maybe. Are you at 15 out of 15? (The problem seems to be that a webpage address can be written in many ways but the treasure count seems to require it to be written exactly as the programmer expected).
You can do similar stuff with the other urls to test this. I appended %20 to the url of #1 and I get the same page, but without the notice that I've found a ghost. I.e. it is not the page, but the address that is the answer. Which is a bit weird. But maybe Safari is the browser, that LT staff used when testing?

Many thanks to the team for another enjoyable time! And of course the helpers with the hints!
It is weird (but actually it fits into the time 😉):
When I go to the book of #7 in my library, there is no ghost, when I go to the author site and then to the book, there is a message:
You found a ghost! You now have 15 out of 15 ghosts. Check on your hauntourage of ghosts.
When I go to the hunt site there are only 14 ghosts and and the clue for #7 is not crossed out.

Glad I stopped by here -- I think I've tried to add #4 about ten times now on different days. I do have the new style etcetera.

Back to add same problem with #5 I think. I know I have the right clue, pretty sure the right place here too.

Gotta say I'm not loving the picture clues. #8 and 9 were at least recognizably referring to books I'd heard of, but #7? Um, okay, it's a horror collection where the title or maybe some of the stories have to do with hearts. Gee, thanks. Don't really feel like clicking through hundreds of titles. People who haven't heard of the books in #8 or #9 are probably in a similar boat, though at least searching for the city mentioned in #8 brings it up easily and the image obviously refers to the title once you have it.

Can anyone give an on-LT (I refuse to use Google for the hunt, since I personally regard it as cheating - it's a LT hunt, not a Google hunt) hint of something to search for, based only on what is in the clue? Like maybe what the picture is supposed to represent?

I am mystified by #7 although my first guess actually got me #9 which I hadn't really looked at yet.

From the hints I am convinced I have the right author and the right idea but having visited said author page and clicking on multiple titles I'm still not getting it.

Even after deploying >151 norabelle414:'s great suggestion and trying everything relevant on the first page of results - so I am baffled.

I am sorry. These kind of words do not work in other languages than English. I have LibraryThing in Spanish. "Early Reviewers" in Spanish is said "Primeros revisores" or, in the special case of writing reviews for books, "Primeros reseñadores", or "Reseñadores antiguos".

ER, as a title of a thriller or a horror book, usually means "Emergency Room". I could have been looking until the end of the world. Thank you.

I’m in despair. Still stuck on 6 and 14. Clueless on 14 and have followed all the hints on 6 to no avail. Help!

>244 varielle: General reminder: LT is not just books, authors, tags and CK :)

On 6: Go to the LTER page, remove ALL filters except for genre (romance) and look at the list of books). If you do not see anything that makes sense (it is pretty obvious IMO), just start clicking on them until you get it. It won't take that long.

On 14: Head to the LT store and see if you won't find something there

Whoo! *blows steam off the end of her proton pack's particle thrower*

Done and dusted. (Spectrally speaking.)

14 took me a bit, but that was more about not knowing my way around the Thing that well. (This hunt is DEFINITELY good for that!)

>245 AnnieMod: and >246 lesmel: I believe I found them. I got a message that I had all 15 but when I look #6 didn’t clear. I keep reading about a glitch. Is there something special I need to do to it? ETA - never mind. It now says I have 16 of 15. Must be a poltergeist. Clearly haunted. 👻

That was fun, but i am at a loss about those getting 16 out of 15 ghosts! What the heck? i have 15 now. Am i missing something?
Thanks!

>249 clamato: The "16 out of 15" was due to a bug, so maybe they have fixed it or maybe you were lucky to have a browser that didn't trigger the bug.

https://www.librarything.com/topic/345140 and https://www.librarything.com/topic/34514%30 is the same address just spelled a bit different. In the same way one of the web addresses used for the ghost hunt could be spelled in different ways and the LT program doing the counting was confused by this.
You are not missing something if you got 15/15.

If all the the ghosts are crossed out, you have completed the hunt.

Have tried the hints, but I'm still stuck on #s 14 and 15. Not sure I'll be able to find them before things end tomorrow (will depend when I can get back online for personal stuff!).

Now, revisit any of the pages hiding a ghost; does the second banner in the above image mention '16 out of 15 ghosts'?

If only there were a large version of the badge, so we could see what it actually looks like.

Where have you looked for them?
If you go to your profile page, and choose Charts&Graphs at the top, THEN click Social on the left, THEN click Badges under Social (I know, I know…), you will at least see them a bit larger, labeled and as a list. I don't know how to make them any larger than that.
