Description | Francis Channing Barlow (19 October, 1834 – 11 January, 1896) was a lawyer who enlisted as a private in the New York militia in April 1861 and after rising through the ranks was, after his conduct in the Battle of Antietam, promoted to brigadier general on 19 September 1862. After the war he helped found the American Bar Association, was New York Secretary of State, and prosecuted the Boss Tweed ring. |
