bluepiano: I'm flouting my own list description because I've read only chunks of this rather than the lot but it includes a notorious academic hoax; whether it's a fair-minded one or not is the subject of some argument.

Alex_Maybe: When "Octobriana and the Russian Underground" was published in 1971, it was presented by its author (Czech immigrant Petr Sadecký) as an expose on a secret society of libertine Soviet dissidents operating behind the Iron Curtain called Progressive Political Pornography (PPP). The title character, Octobriana, was presented as a symbol of their movement and the star of comic strips published in the PPP's samizdat (underground publication). However, it later came to light that Sadecký had made up the PPP and stole the character of Octobriana from two Czech artists he had known in Prague.

bluepiano: The first-line index in a poetry anthology can make for odd reading. This book is an unusually interesting one from The Great Poetic Anthology.

bluepiano: Long before Ali G's interviews there were Henry Root's letters. A great shame they seem to be nearly forgotten, as both the author and his correspondents--whose replies are in good faith--are very funny.

bluepiano: Undemanding but often fetching and sometimes charming collection of letters from the editors' Polish uncle. Some of the fetched & charmed reviewers would have done well to look at the copyright page.

bluepiano: Svevo's short novels are as good in their way as Zeno. Here, a writer falls victim to a hoax. (The cf is surely Lardner's 'The Maysville Minstrel'.)

bluepiano: Sad story of Darwin's youngest's attempt to follow in his father's footsteps. Not only his ideas but his very existence have been unaccountably overlooked.

bluepiano: Scholarly presentation of fragments of a classical Greek poem, copiously annotated and with commentary from various sources over the centuries.

bluepiano: Not the best writing style but nonetheless interesting for the outcome of Erdal's move from publisher's editor to ghostwriter for the publisher's MD and the consequences of it.
