Nicely done! Easier to keep track of clues and answers. What a pleasure to play.

Can I assign a lifetime membership to another account, as I already have one?

8nytbestsellers
Oct 24, 2018, 3:31 pm

7 and 10 are my trouble spots. I thought I had 10, but then the second stanza completely changed the subject! And I thought 7 was going to be the Draugr tag, but that was definitely not it, nor Norse mythology, not paranormal. I feel like it has to be Norse/Scandinavian specific.

9lorannen
Oct 24, 2018, 3:34 pm

>7 2wonderY: No problem! I'll have to do it manually on my end, so you'll just need to message me next week and tell me what account I should apply it to.

This is fun. I'm up to 10 now. (I just got the last two together; I knew the answers, but it took a while to figure out where exactly to look for them!)

Question: Is there a way to get the announcement banner back? I closed it when it first popped up, but now that I've started playing I wouldn't mind having that reminder back up there...

10/24 348pm Wow! Hasn't been up an hour yet and I've already gotten 2-4-5-8-11-13-14, seven in all. Much better than I could ever do as a Pirate! I doubt I'll get twelve, much less all fifteen, but in the past all I've been able to get is my Pirate's Badge.

358pm And now I just got Candy 9, bringing me to eight in all.

Huh. I'm also stuck on #7 -- at first I thought it might be Scandi crime -- but figured that must be the "old category" referenced in the last line of the clue. So then I tried the "Nordic Noir" tag page, which got no results either. Then I clicked a whole bunch of related things and got nothing.

However, I solved the rest of them on my own, so am feeling pretty good about that! Maybe somebody can push me in the right direction for this last one.

I feel like I KNOW what some of these clues are hinting at, but I must not be searching in the right places or for the right terms! For example, I know clue 6 is referring to Hogwarts, but checking that page and a bunch of similar pages (like Harry Potter series page and individual book pages) isn't helping! I have a similar problem with clues 12 and 14. As for clue 2, I really have no idea and am feeling very dense.

52Maddz
Oct 24, 2018, 5:32 pm

Woohoo! Got them all - mostly without assistance. A couple I guessed the right thing but wasn't in the bull's eye, so to speak. 6, 7 and 12 I had to skate around to find the exact page, others required some Google-fu.

Wow - this one was sooo much easier for me than some of the others. I got all but #7 without help, but I'm still stuck despite all of the good clues that everyone has shared. This was so much fun! #7 and #12 really had me chasing around the site, but with everyone's awesome tips, I got them! For #7, I used a broad geographic area related to the Norse countries, and added a phrase that made it a genre. I believe it was @mahsdad that gave me the hint that I used to figure it out! Really helpful! as for #12, I thought it was a cemetery- it isn't. Think of a super diverse city, and what relation "York" and "Edward" has to a specific country. I loved this one! To my eternal and utter astonishment (and, ok, a bit of Googling of key terms for a couple - but NOT reading this thread), I've got 14 candies.

Since I'm really really bad at crosswords ... yes, I'm amazed. And pleased. And enormously entertained. I've been enjoying this thoroughly!

Esp. once I realised that LT was trying to ensure we learnt about some of the less-known bits of LT - series and places were things I'd only really come across recently, for eg - so I made sure to look to the left on a search result.

#5 is the final, baffling rhyme. I'll see how long I can hold out before looking for clues in this thread ...

... OMG, I did it. But I had to stop focussing on the "John" aspect of it. Yes, I Googled; no, I didn't read this thread.

WOOHOO!! That was FUN. :)

I got 11 on my own, and I had the answers for two more but had forgotten about CK places (I did try Local - no joy, of course). Those were 6 and 12. 7 had me stumped completely - I needed every single clue here to find it. >80 Taphophile13:'s clue got me 11, the last one. I had never heard of 10 (but found it with very little searching), and was unfamiliar with what you need to find for 5 - I googled the name triggered by the first line, which led me off in not quite the right direction, then googled the quote in the second-to-last and that got me aimed right.

Fun! as usual.

101WeeTurtle
Oct 25, 2018, 3:12 am

Yeah, some took a fair bit of clicking around, but many of these I lucked out and had the right knowledge to figure out the clue. I'm most impressed with myself for getting #12 right on the first try, though it took some clicking to find the right form. Same with (I think) #6.

#15 I got part-way through the clue and brain immediately jumped to the book and I was thinking "no...(way)." I liked the book so much in primary school that I brought it to my teacher to read to the class. I also read one of the first words with letters transposed ("everydoby") and blamed it on the character for not knowing proper words because it was Grover. Poor fellow.

#5 I have to wikipedia and then click around some more.

If you visit the right page (the answer to the clue) a banner will appear on top, and it will be registered. If you then go back to the hunt page, the corresponding clue will be grayed out and you get a candy in the bar on the top of that page.

An answer can be a work, author, tag, CK location, and everything else, as long as it is a LibraryThing page.

LOVE THESE!!! Though, one always stumps me.....and this time it's #10. Conceptually I get what each stanza is alluding to, but can't find the thing that mashes those 2 things together?

I got the first three clues right off the bat, so I'm going to pace myself this run. Not going to peek at any clues at all this time! ;)
I'm also going to try to resist searching for more than three a day, but it'll be like trying to put a Rowntree's fruit pastille in your mouth without chewing it! :)

Fun! Got all of them fairly easily though #6 and #7 required a lot of guesswork for the specific one (I knew the name of the place immediately for 6 but took a few tries to find the right listing, and for #7 likewise had to try several synonyms for each of the two words in the answer). 5. Arthur Miller? But I can't find the spot.
7. I thought it was Nordic Noir, but again, I mustn't be getting the right page.
10. cats and bats? bats and cats?

>160 pith: You're really close on most of those!

5. Have you tried his author page?

7. You have one word right, and it is a two-word tag. The other word appears in some of the clues above...

10. The cats are a red herring. The important part of this clue is the author name in the next-to-last line.

12. The answer to this one is common knowledge -- or, should I say, Common Knowledge?

15. Searching the phrase in quotation marks may clear things up.

Hope my hints aren't too direct, but you really are on the right track.

163wordcauldron

>160 pith:: Here are my hints for you:

5. You are right. Go to his author page--easiest way is to find one of this books then click the link on link for his name.
7. You are REALLY close. Last part is "noir," but try a narrower word for the first word, like more specific to a country instead of an all-encompassing word that describes a region.
10. You are right with "bats." Go to the "bats" tag, then look at the books that show up for it. Should be one of the first ones listed.
12. You are right. Search "Tower of London", then look for it in the Common Knowledge section as a place.
15. Look for a Golden Book with the quoted phrase as a part of the title.

Quick instructions: there are poems on the hunt page linked in the original post above. Each of those poems acts as a clue pointing you to a particular page on LT (a work page, tag page, author, character, place, etc.)
If you go to one of those pages you'll see a little message at the very top of the window that tells you that you've found one of the clues.

I have to say that clue '6' did stump me for a while, not because I didn't know the answer, but rather that I had trouble figuring out the sneaky way KJ wanted it used. I was so accustomed to only searching under the same old things 'tags' etc. but I'm on to you now! ;)

Speaking of old things, a curious 'glitch' happened to me this afternoon, as I clicked on the 'Come boast of your haul' hyperlink on the Halloween Hunt page, it took me to the last Pirate Day hunt rather than this page!
I hit the back button and tried again, and this time it worked correctly.
I have been unable to repeat the bug. This is one of the reasons that I dislike when people say that computers work on pure logic and don't make mistakes. :/

#12 was incredibly difficult for me. First I kept thinking of a graveyard and tried that and all synonyms, I really thought that HAD TO BE the answer. Eventually I needed to consult the thread and figured it had to do with London, but no idea what to look for. I read hint after hint and *still* didn't get it. I literally had to see trillianiris' comment #163 where they *spell it out* to finally find it.

Not sure where to go -- I've been happily playing (I'm up to 8) but then somehow, I seem to be disconnected from the game, nothing appears on top -- before I had a banner all the time that I could click on to get back to the clues? It would shift to saying I had gotten the clue right, but now there's nothing. Did that go away? If it is a problem do I take it elsewhere?

Back to say, problem solved! I just wasn't getting any clues. I figure the first banner was just to get my attention and is gone now.

266Sylak
Oct 27, 2018, 2:53 pm

I must admit that a couple of years ago I'd have been stumped by #7 myself. But a friend got me into the genre by lending me his copy of Forbrydelsen, and I was reading an article only days ago on Jo Nesbø’s The Snowman (which is what I originally thought the answer might be), which had the genre name in the title of the article (on theconversation.com). The Tag of the genre name as I knew it 'Nordic _ _ _ _', didn't reveal the candy, but by revealing the full Tags list on The Snowman page on LT it came up under a different title (begining with 'S') and that was the right answer. Simple if you are in the know. Otherwise I probably would not have got it either. ;)

Just got 8, and 9 to get today (doing all the clues in order, just a few a day).

With a free account you can catalog up to 200 books (other than that there's no limitation on what a free account can do). For more than 200 books it's $10 per year, or $25 for lifetime. They often give away lifetime memberships in events like this.

@JaynaP.B4 - you need to go to the page containing the answer. For eg, if you believe the answer to the clue is an author, then you search for that author's name and select their author page from the results.

If you've guessed correctly, then the bar at the top of the page will say "You have found n candies!" (or words to that effect).

Wheee! #7 was the only one I needed hints for, and that still took some clicking around.

So, if I am understanding correctly, before I had the Lifetime account, I would have had to pay once I added more tha 200 books to my catalog. It’s a good thing I have a lifetime account.:-)

I tried to do as much as I could on my own. This is my first try at one of these and it took me a little bit to figure out what I was doing. Some of them I found but didn't know I had found them so kept looking until I figured it out. I didn't think I would finish them all and I had to have a little help from the hints here so thank you all so much! Honestly, I had the most difficult time with #8. I have never read one of his books. I am not really into the thriller style but I actually have some of his books on my TBR pile because I heard they are not thriller.
Anyway, this was fun. I learned a lot about the site and have added some more books to my TBR pile. It's always growing.

<331> LibraryCin, now I know why I never got more than a couple of the pirate treasures! This is only the second time I've played the hunting game.

It has been a marvellous way to make time to explore the LT resource. I'm usually too preoccupied with writing reviews and looking at other people's libraries.

Well, I got 10 candies, mostly without clues, just want 2 more definite clues - I have searched and searched CLUES and tags and CK and ??? to no avail.

Help!

#2 Barcode = I've entered this A LOT, also Barcode Scanner and Printed Barcode.

#6 Hogwarts = I clicked on TAG and on each Harry book and the author.

#7 I've clicked with every country, plus Noir, then Iceland and Icelandic, even North Sea.

#10 No clue has helped.

#12 I searched for Tower of London in CK and have no idea where to find it.

3: Have you tried looking at tag pages? If you do a search in the box at the upper right corner of your screen, then click "tags" on the left sidebar, that should help.

5: You're looking for the page of an author of a famous play. If you know what play, go to that page and then click on the author's name.

6: >335 norabelle414: gave good, specific instructions for finding this one. If you go to the page of any of the books in this series, look at the left sidebar under the cover image for "common knowledge" and you should be able to find it under places.

7: This is a two-word tag; both of the words have been used in hints above. The first word starts with an "S" and the second word starts with an "N".

13: You're looking for a children's book by a famous British children's author with an unusual name -- he wrote about a certain chocolate factory, and a very large peach. If you go to his page and look at the list of works he's written, you'll find one that best fits the Halloween theme.

#2 Barcode isn't what you are looking for in the store. You are looking for the product page of an item that is sold in the LibraryThing store that rhymes with rat.

#7 Did you type in 'Scandanavian Noir' or did you type in 'Scandinavian Noir' (one letter spelling difference)?

#10 The title of the book is in the spoiler tag of post #325 of this thread.

YSBookRev (#361):

2: What you're looking for rhymes with "bat", and is a physical item sold by LT.

5:This is a famous play often read by US high school students. Think "witch hunt".

6:What you're looking for here is the Common Knowledge "place" referenced. Pick the most verbose of the options.

7:Not really sure how to help out if all the many prior hints for this one haven't helped, sorry. They've all but spelled out the answer.

12:Think of a famous landmark associated with a bird that is separately associated with the word "Nevermore".

14:What do vampires want?

Thank you so much for this. I had gotten 12 yesterday and your help gave me #6 & #2 (which I just noticed as I never saw the candy while clicking away...) but still not the others: 5, 7, and 14. truly I have tried crucible, arthur miller, salem, salem, ma, witches, witchcraft and on and on and on for #5 with no luck. For #7 I have tried everything as well Nordic, Norwegian, Scandinavia, crime fiction, mythology, vikings and every variant of such - even the tags associated with Girl with the dragon tattoo... and for #14 I have tried every variant of blood, dracula, vampires, etc. with no luck...
But I'm not going to give up.

Thank you.

>368 YSBookRev: Please use the spoiler tag when posting hints/the solutions you've tried! Instructions on how to do that are in >1 lorannen: We don't want to spoil the solutions for folks who are still hunting.

It sounds like you're getting the hints right, but you're not on the right types of pages.

For #5 You're all around this one. You need to find the author page for the writer of The Crucible

For #7 Start with a book in the genre in question. You're looking for a tag page.

For #14 You've already found the answer. This one is also a tag page

370lorax
Oct 30, 2018, 1:02 pm

YSBookRev (#368):

You are trying the right words, so you must not be trying them in the right places.

For an author, try the author page. For the others, try the tag pages, and keep going for #7. You'll need to do a "Show all" on the tags to get the right one to show.

This was a lot of fun and helped point out some of the features of the site that I wasn't familiar with.

I really enjoyed it with the exception of number 7 (which I had to ask a friend for hints, then finally the answer and still don't see how I could ever have worked that out from the clue nor can I see a Halloween connection). As I never did figure it out (was finally given the answer), it's the only candy I didn't collect.
