Off the Deep End - a portrait of a swimmer who trains for the Olympics in his forties. I'm very psyched, not only because this is the type of non-fiction that I love, but also because my DH - a former swimmer and swim coach - will really enjoy it, too.

Double or Nothing : How two friends . . . is coming to my house! I'm thrilled for two reasons: I LOVE Vegas (witness the number of books about Vegas in my library) and The Golden Nugget is my favorite hotel anywhere! I just hope the book lives up to my expectations.

I came back from lunch and all of the sudden, new comment from Abby! That was really fast, Abby!

I got Venetian Mask. I'm very excited about it, but at the same time I'm a little disappointed about all of the other great books that I DIDN'T get...I think I'm going to have to add a lot to my wishlist!

I'm getting Secrets of the Hollywood Girls Club. This is my 2nd month requesting, so I'm really excited to get a book! I've got to track down and read the first one, though, since this is the 2nd Hollywood Girls Club book. LOL!

Me three!

I was a little surprised to have gotten it, but less than I was to have gotten Nearly Human. At least I actually have another music book.

I was also a little surprised not to have gotten the Arthurian book. I have quite a bit of Arthurian legend in my catalog (q.v.), though I suppose it must be said that a third of my books so tagged are by Marion Zimmer Bradley. And that in adition to The Mists of Avalon, I have The Once and Future King and Le Morte d'Arthur.

Well, a book's a book, and music isn't a bad subject -- as long as it isn't sheet music (I don't play anything).

Totally forgot about requesting anything, but am happy to see I'm going to get He Said Beer, She Said Wine. I say BOTH! Woo hoo. We usually have several kinds of beer in the house and literally hundreds of bottles of wine, so I'm good to go with some pairing recommendations. I hope I won't be too drunk to post. ; )

I'm interested in hearing how you like that book: it was the one I was a little surprised at not getting.

38_Zoe_
Edited: Mar 18, 2008, 2:48 pm

>33 AnnaClaire: It's the same thing as before: everyone has lots of Arthurian books (well, slight exaggeration, but the point stands), whereas far fewer people have music-related books. Again, music-related is the key; the books that are considered good matches for the book may not actually be about music.

I'm getting Living Rich by Spending Smart. I've finally figured out that I'm never going to get the big-publisher popular fiction books, but I seem to be having better luck with more niche-y non-fiction (after a long dry spell, I also got 26 Gorgeous Hikes on the Western Côte D'Azur last month).

edit: also, I think the publishers care a lot more about the general type of book than the specifics. I wouldn't be surprised if the shortlist had included at least one book that wasn't Arthurian at all.

I've been trying to get a book for a few months now. Previously, I just selected the books that I was really interested in reading. This time, I switched my method around, and just selected every single book on the list. And, I finally got one (though, not one I would have pre-selected had I sticked to my prior method).

But, at any rate, after looking up the book on the publisher's site, it looks pretty interesting. I received: Owning the Olympics: Narratives of the New China (The New Media World) by Monroe E. Price and Daniel Dayan.

42AnnaClaire
Mar 18, 2008, 2:53 pm

>38 _Zoe_:
I actually said as much. Your first paragraph says more or less what I said. Namely, that while I was a little surprised to have gotten a music book, it does, in fact, have some basis in my library. And that while I was a little surprised not to have gotten the Arthurian book, a third of my Arthurian books are by a single author, and that three of my Arthurian books are fairly common.

This will be my second ER in five months. Very exciting - especially as I just cleared off enough books in my pile to read the *first* ER (The Girl with No Shadow). ;) Maybe I'll end up going at them back-to-back.

I'm the third (I think) in the topic to get This Gaming Life. A slightly peculiar choice, as I don't think I own/have cataloged *any* books on video games - the closest I can come to is the Scrabble Dictionary and another book on chess. I do have several "travelogue" sort of books, though, and I'm anticipating an interesting read for sure!

Hi, Bubbacoop!!

To post a review for a book, go to the book. On the left, go to edit book. There, you'll see some stars. Give what you feel appropriate. Right beneath that, is the space for you to enter your review. It will automatically be posted for everyone to see when they click that book.

Hope that helps! :)

I didn't request it for that reason -- I don't drink a lot of alcahol, and I suspect I would need to do any reviewing sober.

Another one for This Gaming Life: Travels in Three Cities and I am So Excited! This is my first ER book too, and I've been rambling on about it in real life for the last few days now. I'm fighting the urge to use bold-type, underling, italics, and exclamation points all at once, right now.

And unlike some of the others who're receiving this book, I actually do have other books about video games as well as traveling! Should be fun!

I'm new on LT and am only about 1/3 of the way through cataloging my library, so I was surprised (and thrilled) to get a book on my first try: Dream Lucky: When FDR was in the White House, Count Basie was on the radio, and everyone wore a hat

Yeah, I finally got one. Owning the Olympics: Narratives of the New China How exciting to finally get one. So many of us got this one because there was 100 available. I can't wait to receive and read it, then see what everyone thinks of it.

Now there are even 2 more books available. March is a good month for ERers on LT.

I just got my copy of Larryisms by Larry John and I'm laughing already! I popped it out of the envelope and just meant to look at it, but I got sucked in I don't want to put it down...

I got my first ER book, Double or Nothing: How Two Friends Risked It All to Buy One of Las Vegas' Legendary Casinos, in the mail today, and I already finished it!

Fans of non-fiction should definitely take a chance on this well-composed and fast-paced memoir about friendship and fortunes. Set in Las Vegas, the story focuses on the business partnership of Tim Poster and Tom Breitling (the author) as they make $100 million not once, but twice. While the first third of the novel, focusing on their first venture as a hotel reservation service riding the dot-com boom of the late 90s, is necessary to establishing their relationship and characters, the memoir really comes alive with their purchase of The Golden Nugget Casino. From meeting Tony Bennett to starring in a reality TV show, the meat of the memoir is a very well-organized collection of anecdotes about the running of a casino. Though a bit skimpy on exact details and a bit excessive with the "gas pedal vs. brake pedal" metaphor used to describe Tim and Tom's business relationship, this book is a quick and fun read that will make you long for a Vegas vacation.

Manadabomb -- I got Seven Days to Sex Appeal: How to Be Sexier Without Surgery, Weight Loss, or Cleavage by Eva Margolies and Stan Jones, also. I've read it and started a review.

Abby, do I post the review here? on the book page? I know they sent me an editor's email to send my review to also.

Actually, I was impressed. MOST of the stuff in the book is what I was taught in middle school under the heading of "how to act like a lady", coupled with the mother-daughter course I took at Barbizon on "how to be a run-way model and escort-appropriate" (not the sexual escort -- just a good-companion escort). NOTE: the above is not my review, just a couple of comments.

If anyone who got This Gaming Life doesn't really want it -- it was one I did want -- my husband, my kids, all their friends just fall into the computer and get lost and BOTH my next door neighbors are gamer writers (one wrote all the support stuff on World of Warcraft), and I've gone to a couple of gaming conventions with them, so I would love to see it if you don't want it.

As little as I thought the one I got Seven Days to Sex Appeal had to do with me, I loved it and think I figured out how to post the review on it!

I am getting Franklin and Lucy and This Gaming Life. Yahoo!

Though out of curiosity, I took a look and we share 37 out of 846 for you and 896 for me. And I see a fair number of titles in your library that might well have been in mine were it not for the "so many books, so little time" problem.
