2023 Halloween Treasure Hunt

1AbigailAdams26
Oct 17, 2023, 11:30 am

It's October, and the Halloween Hunt has returned!

The object of the game is to solve our clues (in verse!) and go to the LibraryThing page each clue is talking about.

Go HERE for the hunt.

You have two weeks—until Tuesday October 31st at 11.59 pm Eastern Time—to find all the jack-o-lanterns hidden around the site and gather them all together into one troupe.

Use this thread to brag, ask for and give hints, etc.

We will be awarding profile badges to anyone who finds at least two jack-o-lanterns, and anyone who finds all 12 will be entered into a drawing for a LibraryThing prize.

Helpful tips

Please, use the spoiler tag when posting hints or suggestions. Here's how:

To use the spoiler tag, type the following before whatever you'd like to hide:

#5: Every month, LT highlights a List of the Month, the latest of which should be visible in the news feed on your Homepage. The riddle straight-up tells you which particular one you need to click to get the jack-o-lantern.

#6: This is a riff on a line from a poem. Specifically, "Candy is dandy, but liquor is quicker". You'll want the author.

#12: The riddle contains the location Copley Lawn, which is in Georgetown, Washington DC. Nearby is a set of stairs (also mentioned in the clue) that feature prominently in one of the most famous horror movies of all time.

I have looked at tag pages for Pumpkin, pumpkins, carved pumpkins, Jack o'lantern. Refreshed the pages (as suggested above). I think I must be on the wrong track or that they are also known by another name that I don't know.

Edit - found it forgot to try the plural for Jack o'Lantern

Posts regarding this "refreshing" difficulty brings to mind that perhaps-maybe-possibly (?) what you're doing with your specific operating system is not clearing the cache and replacing the webpage with the latest version.

On a a Mac (Apple), to refresh (replace the webpage), you hold down the shift key while clicking the refresh symbol in the browser bar. I've had absolutely no trouble collecting the Jack O'Lanterns (except #4, which I have given up trying to solve).

Been too long since I used a Windows OS, but if this message might help you, there are lots of great people here to advise.

And sorry if I've spoken out of turn, and *everyone* was already replacing the webpage correctly. No intention of being a pedantic know-it-all.

>102 LC3library:

Certain pages on LT are currently special: if you land on them, you'll get a jack-o-lantern. These pages can be a specific Work, a tag, an item in the shop, a List, an Author or anything else. The riddles on the Hunt page provide clues as to the pages you're looking for. If you've found a certain jack-o-lantern, refresh the hunt page: the riddle you ticked off will now be greyed out.

In >104 LC3library: you've answered one clue -- go to that tag page to receive a jack-o-lantern. Then figure out some of the others.

In the end, every member who finds more than five or so items is entered into a raffle where they can win some items from the LT shop. Those members will also receive a badge (yours will appear here) for participating in this hunt -- although those badges can be several months late. They are not the priority anyway.

These hunts are semi-regular and are a way for letting members find out about areas of the site that are not directly relevant for fiddling with your catalogue and that they may not know about.

For #6, you want the author page for the poet that the clue is riffing off.

For #11, you want the Legacy Library page for the author in question; there’s a link to it in the right-hand column of their author page.

145Gryphon-kl
Oct 20, 2023, 5:53 pm

>136 Terrell_Solano:

#2 is a tag that’s another term for restless spirits of the dead. Note that you want the plural form.

#4 is a tag for the holiday described in the clue. Either the English or Spanish name should work.

#6 is the author page for the poet who wrote a poem with the second line that’s the first line of the poem in the clue.

#9 is the tag page for a type of seasonal decoration. Again, you want the plural form.

Another hint for #2:Tag search what badge was awarded for the 2022 Halloween Treasure Hunt. If one doesn't work, try many :)

Since there were no hints for #10 yet, here's a walkthrough:
Do a Google search for 'story about + 2nd line of 2nd paragraph of Clue#10' to get the title. Since the 1st line of the 1st paragraph of Clue#10 mentions cinephiles, do a tagmash search with ONE of the nouns from the title plus the surname of the director of the film adaptation OR the surname of the author.

Another enjoyable Halloween hunt I cheated my way through! My thanks to the creators

Hello Everyone! The 2023 Halloween Treasure Hunt has now ended. Thank you to all who participated!

We had 2,183 players for this hunt, and 1,304 players finding at least five clues. The average number of clues found was seven.

Our randomly selected winners for the hunt are:

EAMesa
grumpydan
kellyslist
aeww
djryan

Winners: I will be messaging you about your mailing addresses, so we can get your prizes sent out to you!

Participants who found at least two jack-o-lanterns: Please be aware that badges are awarded manually, and may not appear in your badges for some time.

Regarding the banner: the developers are still aware of the ongoing problems with the banner's appearance, and the fact that dismissing it once sometimes seems to dismiss it forever, despite the member's wishes/preferences. The issue is on the list of things to be looked at, although I have no timeline to give on a resolution.
