Land ho, me hearties! The Dread Pirate Spalding has done it again, and hidden treasure across the land of LibraryThing.
» Join the LibraryThing Treasure Hunt!
Read the clues, and find the treasure chests we've hidden around the site. Everyone who finds at least 12 treasures will be automatically entered into a drawing for one of UPDATE: 20 fabulous prizes (a LibraryThing or TinyCat t-shirt or tote bag (as seen on the LT Store)!
And while you're at it, don't forget to switch over to LibraryThing in Pirate, too.
UPDATE: The hunt has officially ended! We'll be picking our lucky landlubbers who've won some LT swag shortly. See >366 lorannen: below for links to the solutions to our pirate poems.

I must disagree with Clue 7. Spices have no place here. Well, perhaps as a later addition, but not in the actual manufacture.

I'll trade it for a clue on #2 - even a good hint on what to search on. I'm not active on Twitter, and appearance-based clues (bearded, rides a bike the wrong way) are not usefully searchable.
For #9, the last couplet is the relevant part, particularly the penultimate line.

I finally figured out that I have to switch to new design to see the clues. Not that interested. Not even for a new badge.

Is it just me? I'm coming up blank on most of them. Poking around in general, I've found 8 so far; but had to go back to the ditty page to see which one it applied.

Clue for #4 Popular Children's Author. The last line of the clue gives it away.
Clue to #5 What is today? and how do most books about sciences end.
Clue for #10 The clue tells you where to look, just have to parse out which word is needed. It is part of the clue.
Clue for #13 and #14 When you click through to the answer for #15, start clicking on books, you'll get these two.

1-4 have me stumped.
44ValerieAndBooks
Love working the brain cells over these! Thanks to those of you who gave hints on #2 and #9.
I still need to figure out #3 (keep thinking vulgate is more important to the clue than Viking?) and #12 (seems like this should refer to a certain ship that Darwin was on, but maybe not :-) ).

I believe I know what # 3 means, but none of the pages that relate to it seem to give me a treasure chest. Have tried tag pages as well as books about this particular famous library, but have been lacking -illuminating- results.

#10Yes. So, if the sailors are no longer "drunken" you'd look for what tag?
#13Starting with a relevant tag usually helps when I don't know what specific book it's pointing to
#16Looks like we've got a minor bug on this one, such that the venue page ending with just the venue ID doesn't quite cut it. We'll fix that soon. In the meantime, search Local for the name of the place. That should get you to the right page.

I think search is broken :(
I was not getting any results for where all the very helpful hints for 1 led me so I tried searching for a well known popular author and got no results for them either.

Many thanks to everyone for the hints - I needed them! If anyone has any further hints for 6, I'd be most appreciative (my knowledge of pop culture leaves a lot to be desired). It's the only one I can't get.
161Fullmoonblue
>160 sweeks1980: I'm short on pop culture too! But while I've never read or watched the treasure that rhymes with (or at least sounds like) "hoard of tomes" it helped me to know that #6 wanted a "hoard" or series of works instead of a single one...

Aaah! Almost missed it this year since I had a bad day and hadn't been online. But with some help from everyone's clues here I was able to get them all!
I got #7 and #4 right awayLa la la, I can recite the whole thing on command . #8 was next, and #9 shortly after I recall from a previous year . Most of the later ones I just got by poking around. #16 was fun for me.
Some, such as #3, #5, #12 -- I understood the answers pretty quickly, and even where on the site to go for them, but it took me a long time to zero in on the exact page requirements. I always get to places in a roundabout, url-changey way and #12 in particular didn't like the way I was doing it. (This happens to me every year and I never learn from it.)
#1 and #2 were last, but I got them eventually with the clues that #1was a person and not known primarily as an author and #2 as Tim specific . Yay!

#3 / #16 - I looked up these place on Local but again,

Geez and Blimey! FINALLY found all 16; but I swear I'd tried all those combinations more than once unfruitfully yesterday.

I'm brain farting and going off in the "wrong" direction on all the ones I don't have yet. I'm pretty sure where I should be going, but then it doesn't seem to be the destination. For instance, on 12 I know I should be going to something dealing with Darwins Legacy Library , but clicking all the links for it don't get a chest.
Oh well, it's my night off tonight, so I can afford to keep hunting.

I seem to be the only one stuck on #6?
I don't watch TV, and in the series/books I think it isGame of Thrones, although I've tried The Hollow Crown and Wolf Hall , I've clicked every conceivable link I can find. I can't fine one for the 7 books clue mentioned above, so I must have the wrong show. It's my last clue.
By the way, staff, you are responsible for my very-hard-day-at-work-today. I couldn't sleep last night for thinking about these clues. Got up in the middle of the night and found a few more treasures, then when I did sleep for the three and a half hours I got, I was dreaming about them! I will report you to my boss today and beg for mercy before she makes me walk the plank. :D
ETA: After I clicked "save message" I see I'm not the only one! Still, can't seem to find the right page through search. I'll try again.

edit: eg this one was supposed to reply to post 229 https://www.librarything.com/topic/269682#6184396 - how is everyone doing that funky >229 lorannen: thing?
edit 2: I guess that answers one of my questions! Typing > 229 (without the space) links to post 229. Would still like to see a consolidated list of all the options (eg the @ user which I just guessed)?

Thoughts - what does #4 have to do with pirates? I got this one from google, not one I was familiar with. I also got stuck on a few that I knew the answer to, but had trouble knowing exactly which section to look at, or got pluralisations wrong etc. Was an interesting way to learn more about librarything, thanks!

>215 lorannen: I'm giving up. I got a bunch this morning and now I can't figure out/remember what answer went with which clue. I guess I should have written them down.
316LucindaLibri
Wrote down all those I remembered from this morning and then used those answers to help find a few others. Made it to 12. woohoo. Still not clear on some of my "correct" answers. Several times I went to a page I thought was the answer to one clue only to find it didn't match that one, but was the answer to another. And there's still one that I'm certain I have the right answer to, but every page related to that answer has been clicked on and none give me a prize. In any case, this provided some amusement, but now it's time to get back to learning about The Vietnam War on PBS and fighting for my health care. aarrggghh!

Never mind... just found it. Just spent about 2 hours on this but fun and learned more about the site.

Thank you!!! Got it!
321btuckertx
>318 ReadingbythePond: Check out the clue at >105 rarm: - that did the trick for me.
322LucindaLibri
>317 Petroglyph: That wasn't the issue. I saw which it SAID I had found, but needed to connect the correct answers with the clues. There are still pages I know were the answers to one of the clues, but can't figure out which one . . . because I stumbled on them while searching general things about pirates. It would have been helpful to be able to click on that green check mark and have it show me the page or answer that went with that clue. (or once you get the answer correct, that answer appears at the end of the grayed out clue).
323LucindaLibri
Finally was able to search through all the hints above and find the rest. Thanks all!

I had an awful time with number 16. The answer seemed so obvious...and it was. If you're super sure you have the answer but it isn't coming up, check your venue filters. And that's all of them! Everyone gave great hints.
326cerebrumhabeo
This is such a fun challenge! I really appreciate the complexity of the clues — everyone who wrote these is awesome!
I hope there's more challenges like this in the future!

I'm going to risk sounding extremely stupid here, but I've just found this challenge and I don't understand if we are looking for specific books, sections of the website? Authors? All of the above? I've never been really good at this kind of thing but would like to find at least one.
328Jarandel
>327 sdbookhound: All of the above, it can be a different type of page for each riddle.
329sdbookhound
I think I know one, but I don't know how to find a subject page.

Me either.

Going thru this thread again and looking at the clues for 7 and 10 still aren't helping any. I've got 12, so I'm going to settle for that unless i have a "DOH!" moment. Will check back tho to see if I can offer up any clues of my own.
334DanaJean
Found him! Oh my lord. I have others that I know the answer, but just not looking at the right page. I wish I would've had more time to play this, really fun.

Managed to get them all, with help from himself and others posting here. #5 was the worst for me - no children (except my sister's 4), and not knowing many US children's authors. #2 was easy for us - himself got that one!
We usually watch the history shows that person fronts, and have been to local events where that person has participated.

I have never actually seen a "treasure Chest" but a badge has appeared. Is this because of my Google Chrome browser that I don't see the chests? As a result, I never know which clue I solved.
357lorannen
>355 Yamanekotei: For #3 think very famous libraries. Not necessarily where you'd expect Vikings. And where are housed some famous copies of the Vulgate text (or parts of it).
For #16I can tell you this is one we've used in a past treasure hunt, if that helps. And be sure you're using the right URL—there's a bug where the version of the URL that ends with "/venue/###" doesn't trigger the treasure chest. Only the full URL with the venue name does. To find it, do a Local search and make sure you've selected to search by name, not location. Clicking on the link that comes up in your search results should do the trick.
For #16
358lorannen
>356 david.maness: Go to the Treasure Hunt page and look next to the titles (Treasure 1, 2, etc.) for the clues. The treasure chest icon changes into a green check-mark if you've found that treasure.
And your profile badge is the "corsair coffer" which was the badge from 2016's treasure hunt! We haven't sent out badges for this year's hunt yet.

I had time to look for just one chest when I first read about the contest and made a mental note to come back in a few hours. Wish I'd catalogued that mental note on LT, because I completely forgot about it until it was too late.
Kudos to all the buccaneers who came up with this idea. 11/10, would play again.

Re #3, Dublin was the place I was thinking along with York. It was the Vulgate bit that rather threw me - I was looking for actual Vulgates, not the library it's in. I don't think I've ever visited Dublin at all - the one family holiday we did to Eire we sailed Holyhead-Dun Laoghaire outbound, and Rosslare-Fishguard return and were staying in rural Wexford, so no reason to visit Dublin.

And now for some more fun stats:
Based on the number of members who found Treasure 3 (Trinity College Library), it was our most difficult riddle, with only 300 buccaneers hunting down this clue.
We also had 300 members who found all 16!
For the prize drawing, there was a grand total of 318 swashbucklers in the running—meaning they each found at least 12 treasures.
Well done, everyone!

One more update: Folks who found six or more treasures will be upgraded to a full lifetime membership here on LT. However, I need Tim's help to process those and he's out of the office until next week. If you need your lifetime membership before Tuesday, drop me a message, and I'll upgrade you manually. I'm sorry for the inconvenience—bad timing on our part.
374elenchus
Love the stats! Do you have handy the comparison results from prior years?
I'm also curious how many found just 1 treasure. Thought I read somewhere in this thread that LT might have drawn more participants this year than in past years. Medals for all!
ETA Oops, I see I did read it -- in >366 lorannen:.

>374 elenchus: So, for comparison, we had 360 members who found more than two treasures last year, in 2016. Compare that with 502, which is a pretty big leap! Last year, we had 194 members who found every last treasure, compared to this year's 300.
The main reason I didn't post the number for how many found at least one treasure, is that Treasure 9 goes to the Early Reviewers page, and we had a number of folks for whom that was the only one. We figure the number of members who found only one treasure was likely a bit skewed because of that, though I don't mind sharing it. We had a total of 1,294 members who found at least one treasure.
