Land ho, me hearties! The Dread Pirate Spalding has done it again, and hidden treasure across the land of LibraryThing.

» Join the LibraryThing Treasure Hunt!

Read the clues, and find the treasure chests we've hidden around the site. Everyone who finds at least 12 treasures will be automatically entered into a drawing for one of UPDATE: 20 fabulous prizes (a LibraryThing or TinyCat t-shirt or tote bag (as seen on the LT Store)!

And while you're at it, don't forget to switch over to LibraryThing in Pirate, too.

UPDATE: The hunt has officially ended! We'll be picking our lucky landlubbers who've won some LT swag shortly. See >366 lorannen: below for links to the solutions to our pirate poems.

I must disagree with Clue 7. Spices have no place here. Well, perhaps as a later addition, but not in the actual manufacture.

13lorax
Sep 19, 2017, 12:11 pm

>12 rarm:

I'll trade it for a clue on #2 - even a good hint on what to search on. I'm not active on Twitter, and appearance-based clues (bearded, rides a bike the wrong way) are not usefully searchable.

For #9, the last couplet is the relevant part, particularly the penultimate line.

14lorannen

Clue for #4 Popular Children's Author. The last line of the clue gives it away.
Clue to #5 What is today? and how do most books about sciences end.
Clue for #10 The clue tells you where to look, just have to parse out which word is needed. It is part of the clue.
Clue for #13 and #14 When you click through to the answer for #15, start clicking on books, you'll get these two.

#10 Yes. So, if the sailors are no longer "drunken" you'd look for what tag?
#13 Starting with a relevant tag usually helps when I don't know what specific book it's pointing to
#16 Looks like we've got a minor bug on this one, such that the venue page ending with just the venue ID doesn't quite cut it. We'll fix that soon. In the meantime, search Local for the name of the place. That should get you to the right page.

I thought it was quite difficult this year - I found three on my own (#6 only because I'm currently reading it) and nine with your help, so now it's time to get some sleep and take a fresh look at the rest tomorrow.

I found #12 with >52 2wonderY:'s help. Everybody is on the right track, but I have to admit before today I had no clue this particular page existed.

Aaah! Almost missed it this year since I had a bad day and hadn't been online. But with some help from everyone's clues here I was able to get them all!

I got #7 and #4 right away La la la, I can recite the whole thing on command. #8 was next, and #9 shortly after I recall from a previous year. Most of the later ones I just got by poking around. #16 was fun for me.

Some, such as #3, #5, #12 -- I understood the answers pretty quickly, and even where on the site to go for them, but it took me a long time to zero in on the exact page requirements. I always get to places in a roundabout, url-changey way and #12 in particular didn't like the way I was doing it. (This happens to me every year and I never learn from it.)

#1 and #2 were last, but I got them eventually with the clues that #1 was a person and not known primarily as an author and #2 as Tim specific. Yay!

I'm brain farting and going off in the "wrong" direction on all the ones I don't have yet. I'm pretty sure where I should be going, but then it doesn't seem to be the destination. For instance, on 12 I know I should be going to something dealing with Darwins Legacy Library, but clicking all the links for it don't get a chest.

Oh well, it's my night off tonight, so I can afford to keep hunting.

I seem to be the only one stuck on #6?

I don't watch TV, and in the series/books I think it is Game of Thrones, although I've tried The Hollow Crown and Wolf Hall, I've clicked every conceivable link I can find. I can't fine one for the 7 books clue mentioned above, so I must have the wrong show. It's my last clue.

By the way, staff, you are responsible for my very-hard-day-at-work-today. I couldn't sleep last night for thinking about these clues. Got up in the middle of the night and found a few more treasures, then when I did sleep for the three and a half hours I got, I was dreaming about them! I will report you to my boss today and beg for mercy before she makes me walk the plank. :D

ETA: After I clicked "save message" I see I'm not the only one! Still, can't seem to find the right page through search. I'll try again.

Did it this year in only three hours flat! A new personal best. :)
Although, I did have a fair bit of help too from my fellow Librarythingers. Thank you to all the guys and gals who posted spoilers. :D

I have never actually seen a "treasure Chest" but a badge has appeared. Is this because of my Google Chrome browser that I don't see the chests? As a result, I never know which clue I solved.

>355 Yamanekotei: For #3 think very famous libraries. Not necessarily where you'd expect Vikings. And where are housed some famous copies of the Vulgate text (or parts of it).

For #16I can tell you this is one we've used in a past treasure hunt, if that helps. And be sure you're using the right URL—there's a bug where the version of the URL that ends with "/venue/###" doesn't trigger the treasure chest. Only the full URL with the venue name does. To find it, do a Local search and make sure you've selected to search by name, not location. Clicking on the link that comes up in your search results should do the trick.

>356 david.maness: Go to the Treasure Hunt page and look next to the titles (Treasure 1, 2, etc.) for the clues. The treasure chest icon changes into a green check-mark if you've found that treasure.

And your profile badge is the "corsair coffer" which was the badge from 2016's treasure hunt! We haven't sent out badges for this year's hunt yet.

I had time to look for just one chest when I first read about the contest and made a mental note to come back in a few hours. Wish I'd catalogued that mental note on LT, because I completely forgot about it until it was too late.

Kudos to all the buccaneers who came up with this idea. 11/10, would play again.

This was a very fun idea. It was a great way to learn how to better use Library Thing to search for items. I only got 6 of them solved.

Re #3, Dublin was the place I was thinking along with York. It was the Vulgate bit that rather threw me - I was looking for actual Vulgates, not the library it's in. I don't think I've ever visited Dublin at all - the one family holiday we did to Eire we sailed Holyhead-Dun Laoghaire outbound, and Rosslare-Fishguard return and were staying in rural Wexford, so no reason to visit Dublin.

And now for some more fun stats:

Based on the number of members who found Treasure 3 (Trinity College Library), it was our most difficult riddle, with only 300 buccaneers hunting down this clue.

We also had 300 members who found all 16!

For the prize drawing, there was a grand total of 318 swashbucklers in the running—meaning they each found at least 12 treasures.

Well done, everyone!

One more update: Folks who found six or more treasures will be upgraded to a full lifetime membership here on LT. However, I need Tim's help to process those and he's out of the office until next week. If you need your lifetime membership before Tuesday, drop me a message, and I'll upgrade you manually. I'm sorry for the inconvenience—bad timing on our part.

Love the stats! Do you have handy the comparison results from prior years?

I'm also curious how many found just 1 treasure. Thought I read somewhere in this thread that LT might have drawn more participants this year than in past years. Medals for all!

ETA Oops, I see I did read it -- in >366 lorannen:.

375lorannen
Sep 22, 2017, 12:55 pm

>374 elenchus: So, for comparison, we had 360 members who found more than two treasures last year, in 2016. Compare that with 502, which is a pretty big leap! Last year, we had 194 members who found every last treasure, compared to this year's 300.

The main reason I didn't post the number for how many found at least one treasure, is that Treasure 9 goes to the Early Reviewers page, and we had a number of folks for whom that was the only one. We figure the number of members who found only one treasure was likely a bit skewed because of that, though I don't mind sharing it. We had a total of 1,294 members who found at least one treasure.

I've also updated >366 lorannen: to include the number of members who found each treasure. I'll be continuing this thread on to a new topic page, and I'll kick that off with the solutions links.

>377 amandaabend: I don't think anyone has gotten the badge yet. All badges are recalculated at some fixed time at night and then you get a message about it if you've gotten a new one.

>377 amandaabend: If you see the continuation of this thread here: https://www.librarything.com/topic/270015, you'll see I mentioned badges will be coming next week. I need Tim's help to make those happen, and he's out of the office. As >378 bnielsen: mentioned, you'll get a profile comment notification once you've been awarded the badge, and I'll post in the continuation of the thread once those have been processed, too.
