This thread is for LT'ers or thingamabrarians, or members, or their designees, to post combining or separating problems with their books.
**If a book has been combined with a book that is extremely different from the original.
**If a book won't combine with the other books just like it.
**There is a problem with the entry & it is just too overwhelming to deal with.
________________________________________...
It has been suggested many times that there be a single thread for LT'ers to post combining & separating problems so that;
** they can learn how to do it
** they can get help when needed
** just want someone else to do it (usually, they can't understand how to do it... which is normal... or don't have the time)
**and finally, those LT'ers who "enjoy" combining can have a place to look to first to see what fun can be had helping LT be the best place to catalog books.
________________________________________...
WHEN YOU POST:
Please give us HYPERLINKS, not touchstones. Hyperlinks to the pages where the problems exist are much more accurate than a touchstone when there is a problem.
Give us the title & author, plus any other information you think we might need.
Then you can just wait, "and someone will be with you shortly."

Tim's Guidelines for Proper Etiquette for contacting members about their book records:
"For this topic, I still feel strongly that I'd like to consider it bad form. Many others agree with me. But a few thing I'm dictating and are angry about that. So, fine. Let's just write some guidelines up. I propose that the guidelines be something along the lines of:
*Remember that LibraryThing is used for many different reasons. The way you use and enjoy the site is not necessarily the way others do.
*Be sensitive to how the member is using LibraryThing. Approach members who show no interest in the social side more cautiously.
*Try to provide helpful information and ask questions rather than dictating.
*If the user indicates displeasure at the request, let it drop.
*When in doubt, raise the issue in the Combiners! group before sending a message."
________________________________________...
My note: I would like to add that we should ALWAYS use private comment when we absolutely must contact a LT'er, even when their response isn't private.
and yes, this thread is similar to putting all of our problems together for people to see & say, "oh, no!! LT isn't perfect!!" or "Look at all of the problems that LT has." That isn't the case here. This is a place to gather "challenges" together to make it easier & faster to "fix" them. Let's just remember that "bad" data comes from people... people who make mistakes.. WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES! (ok, there are a couple of perfect people around here) Instead of complaining about the problem, let's fix it.

That thread is for combining information, discussion in general, not for problems....

Q&A carried over from thread #6:
Message 185: PortiaLong
>184 Nicole_VanK:
That search result is a list of individual issues of a magazine. I don't really see any "combining" to do as I don't (at fist glance) see any duplicates.
For a discussion of how some people have decided to treat periodicals you could peruse this thread:
http://www.librarything.com/topic/51179
So, one way that these magazines could all be linked would be to create a "Series" for the Magazine and list the Vol|number as the work order.
**************
vintage_books:
I will list duplicate magazines to be combined with hyperlinks and leave it to Portia or people with more brain cells and expertise than me to decide the correct titles to list. :)
I did persue the thread (3x so far!) and read some great discussion but no answers. However, I searched far and wide for information about a "series" and did not find anything. Should I be looking somewhere specific as to what a series is and how to build one?
I personally want to be able to see which individual magazines I have and do not want to have them bundled together unless I can list them individually under a series.
Advice please?
Thank you,

Addendum to message above:
When I search my library for the words Needlecraft Magazine I find 52 results within my library.
When I use the Search query button on the top menu bar of LT for Needlecraft Magazine I find 54 results total, and only 7 results from my library. Some of the results *could* be skewed due to the inclusion of the word the in the title, but I would think the Search query results would be able to skip that word and still produce more accurate results.....
Thoughts?

Hi folks.
Somebody has gone and combined partial books of the Earth's Children series. The Valley of Horses and The Plains of Passage in particular.
I don't currently have the motivation to try and separate out the partials.

In a frenzy of uniting a singleton from my library with others, I combined two (which were both in my own library, as well as a few others') which should not have been, and would appreciate someone uncombining them. With a bit of checking, since I have both books, I realized the selection of songs is, while similar, not identical.

Hi SaintSunniva, Mary Nancy Graham's songbooks should now be five distinct entities:
1. Christmas Carols
2. A Collection of Fifty Songs for Children
3. Fifty Favorite Songs for Boys and Girls
4. Fifty Favorite Songs for Girls and Boys
5. Songs for Children
As seen here: http://www.librarything.com/author/grahammarynancy&norefer=1
and of course, in your library, they should now both be orphans again.
Can you shed any light on the boys/girls, girls/boys distinction?

To create a Series you just add a Series Name to the Series CK field on the work page (click on the pencil icon next to the field to edit). If a Series with a same name already exists it will likely pop up while you are typing. When you add the Series Name to the next one your (newly created) series will pop up as a suggestion. You can add the order (Vol|No) as you are adding it to the series.
Once you have "saved" the CK information you can then click on the name (which is now a hyperlink) where you will be taken to the series page where you can add a little info about the series and see which works have already been added.

Re: search results not showing all your issues - search results lag significantly behind the rest of the database - I have no idea how long it takes for your work to show once it is entered but it is definately a while.

I'm really not sure what I'm doing or how to do it. As a sample series, I created Needlecraft Magazine 1922.

How do I add individual issues for this year?
Sorry, I actually looked around LT and even checked the Wiki and could not find instructions.

Try reading the text to the right of your series page, 'How do series work'. Basically, put the year/issue in parentheses after the series name. eg, 'Needlecraft Magazine (1922.10).

What the others said - also - I don't know that I would create a series for each year - I would probably include the year in the ordering number like 28 said:
So -
http://www.librarything.com/series/Needlecraft%20Magazine
To add the issues - you go to the work page of the issue and edit the series field - if you start typing Needlecraft Magazine You can select the entry and edit the month/year number. Then remember to save.
If you want to work on the ones in your library I will start adding the others in LT and combining for you.

Thank you everyone, for your kind assistance.
I do admit to still being confused, and I've never seen that group before! I joined and started reading, but there doesn't seem to be a "beginner's page" or FAQ, so reading just added to my confusion.
It's certainly easy enough to modify when someone like PortiaLong and Avron do the work for me! ;-) Thank you for your hard work!
So....more questions.
1) If the results are not showing in the site search to add to the series, is there something I should be doing so they:
a) Show up in the site search
b) Are readily shown in the series
2) The magazine happened to be combined with another magazine called Home Arts in later years. The name of this magazine was changed to: Needlecraft Magazine, the Magazine of Home Arts. Should this magazine also be listed under this series?
3) I usually create a spreadsheet of my magazines and than upload them. Is there a formatting or tagging I can include which would make creating series easier in the future?
Thank you for answering my questions. This is all new to me, so I am trying to learn.

So...more answers ;-)
1.a.) I don't know that there is anything you can do to get items to show up in the site search except wait, wait, wait
b.) the only way you can get them to show in the series is to add the series info in CK for the individual work so you have to find them first (which is complicated by 1a) - SO - if you happen to see that someone owns several in the series you could go to their library and search their catalogue for others to add the info to
2.) I, personally, would include the later "Needlecraft Magazine, the Magazine of Home Arts" in the series and just add that info on the series page (which I will do momentarily).
3.) I don't know of any - since the only way to create a series is to add the series info in the CK section you still have to go to each work to add the series info - I don't know that adding the tag "Needlecraft Magazine" would have made it any easier (since all you have to do is search your catalogue to find the titles anyway).
Edited to add:
Added to series description:
"This magazine was with another magazine (called Home Arts) in later years. The name of this magazine was changed to: Needlecraft Magazine, the Magazine of Home Arts."
PS - vintage_books: looks like you have about 13 ultb tags to change

If you check the author page for Julie Cummins http://www.librarything.com/author/cumminsjulie she has three titles all beginning Children's Book Illustration and Design: http://www.librarything.com/work/3497692 , http://www.librarything.com/work/7025678 , and http://www.librarything.com/work/5512523 . I tried to separate one of the miscombined editions but it seemed to get worse -- it left the wrong title behind. Could someone accomplish this separation and recombination?

Very nice!
If you want, you can make it say the month under "order," instead of just the number code you've currently got. If you enter this as series info:
American Needlewoman (1923.03|March 1923)
The series will sort by the number to the left of the pipe sign (this -> |) but what you'll actually see is whatever shows up to the right of the pipe sign.
You don't have to do this, by any means, but I think that sometimes it looks a bit more elegant.

I've just put in some separating and combining time with the Larousse dictionaries (for instance, I believe that Concise French/English Dictionary, Concise Spanish/English Dictionary, Concise Portuguese/English Dictionary, and Concise Italian/English dictionary are NOT the same work), but there's more work to be done for someone who feels motivated.
46vpfluke
I did a little work on Larousse. A big problem is that a number of these books are using Collectif as an author (e.g. Petit Larousse Illustré) rather than Larousse. There are 4,169 works under Collectif -- this must function in French like Various does in English.

Work 333083 has three seperate series entered into the common knowledge section and each is the only time that particular series is currently used on LT.
With the mass of non-english language titles in the editions list I'm unwilling to do anything with the book. But I expect that it's either the first book of a series and the other info in the series CK is for the next two books, or, someone has combined the three books in question.

I think the person who put in the three series thought one could do it at one place, instead of going to the each work. One needs some verification that the book is indeed a series. A peak at the German wiki site for Imre Kertesz indicates a "tetralogie" for the author, but I am not totally sure without enough research that the author or the publishers indeed do think of the three works as a trilogy.

If it can be done without combining authors, that would be ideal because the book is definitely by Florence Meiman White, but the other books under "Florence White" are (I think) probably by a different Florence White.
Thanks so much.
Also, I combined Snow White and Rose Red (1997 title) with Shadow of the Bear (later reprint title)

I checked first lines and then the author's website, and made absolutely sure that they are identical... where do I put the information to encourage people not to uncombine them?

You put the information in the work's disambiguation notice - If you go to the work page you scroll down through the common knowledge and the disambiguation field is near the bottom.
I usually write something along the lines of:
"Variant Titles: Shadow of the Bear is the title of a reprint of Snow White and Rose Red."

So far I've tried to separate the Disney adaptations from the Salten originals, and left disambiguation for both plus a canonical title on the Disney version.
I'm afraid lots more will need to be done however, since I suspect the Disney adaptation still includes full video, complete book adaptations, etc.

Hi, I've read a LOT of the various threads/instructions on combining, series, CK etc. and make a point of combining as I add works (why isn't that working automatically these days?) but ran afoul of the "iron law of hubris" on the following:
I set about to combine the work: A Nation of nations : the people who came to America as seen through objects and documents exhibited at the Smithsonian / Peter C Marzio http://www.librarything.com/author/marziopeterc on that page. Then discovered 2 more @ Peter Marzio http://www.librarything.com/author/marziopeter. So thought I should combine the authors. This seemed to put the works on the "wrong" author page so "separated"/re-combined etc. A mess.
Then discovered 3 more of this title (2 w/o author and 1 w/ Smithsonian Institution as author!
So, could someone please check the status of this cock-up?
All six works (8 editions) will come up on a Works (keyword) search for: nation nations smithsonian.
The works are:

BTW, I still don't understand if one can combine works w/o authors or totally different, thus uncombinable, authors.
Thanks

Why did a "potential work combinations" suggested for http://www.librarything.com/work/7140435/editions/

Some people have the book as being written by Patricia No-C Gallagher - likely because this is how it imports from Amazon (there are 3 that are found when you look from Amazon on the Add Books page - two show the "C" and one does not). The LT algorithm that picks the "elected" author does not always come up with the answer that seems the most reasonable (oh, for a canonical author field...)
The "wrong" work should still be combined with the others - even if it ends up on the wrong author page - because they are, after all, the same work. I tried to "float" the Patricial With-a-C Gallagher author to the top but was unable to do so. We will have to wait for someone with better "floating" skills to come along.
In the meantime, I think the correct thing to do is add disambig notices to the author pages and the work itself.

Aaaah! All of the editions of Little Women have been combined together, including the abridgments. The page is to big for my computer/internet connection to handle at the moment, so if anyone is looking for a project--have at it! At least the titles with "abridged" should be separated out, and then perhaps a follow up comparing ISBNs to track down others.

Occassionally when "many hands" are making "light work" of an issue you will find that you are combining something that has just been combined - in which case one of the items you are combining will show "0 copies" but it doesn't create an error or anything. On a big project you will often find several people "separating" on the editions page and when they go to the author page to combine someone has already taken care of it.
The only time you sometimes see something funny is when someone is using a trick that temporarily puts two things together that don't belong so they can get some stray copies together with the intention of plucking out the "wrong" copies when they are done - but it would be rare you would be looking at EXACTLY that place before they get things back where they go. (Obviously this is the sort of trick that should never be started if you don't have time to finish the job!)
Just a note -
When separating I would encourage people to keep track of "orphans" - works without ISBN or Author info - so they can track them down later to combine back with the appropriate work.

Can someone take a look at Lives of the Later Caesars, which currently has Anthony Richard Birley as the author, despite the fact that he only seems to have made a partial translation?
97vpfluke
I would tend to leave Anthony Birley as the author, as the original Latin authors are probably all anonymous. Birley seems to be at least the chief translator and also the compiler (from looking at the LOC record). Birley seems to be at least a significant Latin scholar, so I don't really see a problem with his name being associated with this book. The Latin original is: Scriptores historiae Augustae. I think the David Magie and Anthony Birley versions are combined at this point. Perhaps they shouldn't be, because they may be separate compilations.

Is this a cache lag or something else?

Can't combine http://www.librarything.com/author/giuseppepederiali with http://www.librarything.com/author/pederialigiuseppe - LT tells that "This author is no longer in the system" but you can see he is...

It's aggravating because I know I combined authors yesterday. These bugs that only exist on some combinations are very pesky. Of course there is also the question as to why there are two identical authors in LT at all, never mind that they can't be combined.
104Nicole_VanK
> 103: I think author combination still works generally - so your work from yesterday is probably still okay. But for some reason some authors resist combining by a claim that they're no longer in the system. It's weird.
You're right it's also puzzling that identical author names end up as two or more "authors" on LT. Some of these I do understand - for example the combination "ij" (often used in my native Dutch) can be created by typing "i" and "j" separately, but also as a ligature (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typographical_ligature). We can't expect a computer just to understand that the different codes used there really mean the same thing.
However, this doesn't seem to be the reason here.

I was looking at the work Wild Animus , and noticed that when I click onto the author page, the author page shows 0 books written by him. Although there is CK, and wikipedia page link, so they apparently used to be there.
There doesn't seem to be any other author name to combine.
Does anyone know how to fix the author page?

If that book is by another author of exactly the same name, there is no way (at this moment) for LT to make a distinction - in which case your disambiguation notice would also need to be corrected.

Since, as BarkingMatt said in 12, there is no current way to distinguish between identically named authors in LT, the only thing you can do is post a disambiguation notice that there is more than one author represented on the page and post in this thread:

so that when LT eventually does have that capability we have a starting point for sorting them out.

Michael Gear is listed as the first author of the Dutch edition. I changed their series so that they match, and added a canonical title for the English one, so perhaps that will help in the future.
All the works of W. Michael Gear and Kathleen O'Neal Gear have similar problems with authorship - the first author listed varies by edition (witness an English edition in the edition section of your Dutch copy).

I'm not sure what is going on here - if you remove the canonical author you get the middle name back - if you add "Arthur Horner" as the canonical name the "Wakefield" disappears entirely. Theoretically I thought there should be a author page for every author that has a book entered with that author in the author field (at least until it is combined)
For instance:
Author page for Arthur Geoffry Horner:

All I can say is that you should enter the MOST COMPLETE author name on your individual copies of the books and then see how the chips fall.

I know that "The Visitant" has been translated as "Tage des Wolfs", which seems to preclude "Tage der Schlange" from being a German "The Visitant", but I also know that "The Summoning God" has also been translated as "Der Schatten Gottes".

I changed the canonical title of the Anne McCaffrey version and added Roger Elwood as the Editor, but they can not be combined because the "authors" are different, even though Anne McCaffrey is not the author.
The members who have the Anne McCaffrey version would have to change the versions to Roger Elwood to make the incorrect version disappear, but we are not able to contact them in order to do so. So, we just hope that in the future people who add this title will choose the Roger Elwood version.

Currently LT does not have a way to distinguish identically named authors. The best thing you can do is add a disambiguation notice (which you have done) and post the information to this thread:
http://www.librarything.com/topic/8136
In the meantime, ambiguous author names should NEVER be combined with any of the more precise author names. For instance David Cohen should NOT be combined with David D. Cohen. You should try to include the fuller author name (middle initial/name) on YOUR copies of works - if enough people do this the work should then appear on the appropriate author's page.

>138 krazy4katz:, generally speaking, notes shouldn't really be on the same page either, as they're not the same work (at least, I hope they haven't been combined again!) -- they just frequently show up there automatically because the system suggests them for combination, usually because people or import sources have labeled them to look identical to the real book. Not a good thing, as it leads to a lot of confusion and wrong combinations.

#128 -- My wish is that users would give up on trying to combine books without a clear, unambiguous author name together just to be social. So Elizabeth Driver wrote some historical notes for a series reprinted selected editions of Canadian Cookbooks, that doesn't make her the author of the reprint let alone the author of the original and previous and later editions of the same work. I separated out my copy and it will remain a singleton thank you. Too bad, before the faulty combining it did share a home with a few other copies entered from library sources without an author.

But only when there was a name and it is removed later on. If it is still blank because no one entered any content, it does not create blanks.

Yes, sorry for the ambiguity. I did, in fact, mean the canonical name on the author page (there is, as yet, no such thing as a canonical author for a work).
Authors do not need to have the canonical name field filled in, however, once anything HAS been entered in the field then there always MUST be something entered in the field in order not to create the buggy "blank" authors.
I have not encountered the same bug with regards to Canonical Titles for works - although I have noted certain bugs regarding this field which I recently posted in the Bug Collectors group here:

Hi, I just posted this to the wrong group, I'm sure.
I entered my copy of Marmion: A Tale of Flodden Field, and then combined it successfully (or so it seemed). However, my copy still shows that I share it with no other members.
I've waited a couple days, to see if daily database maintenance solved the problem (that's usually what happens), but it's still "broken."
Can you help?

Perhaps this is a cookie issue on your end?

Not a cookie issue, have viewed it on four different computers, and tried at least two different browsers on each system. But it's working now for me also -- so perhaps someone else fixed it. Thanks!

Sorry, yes I combined several singlets from the author page, then got distracted...Sir Walter needs work.
There is a disambiguation note about the the Lung Cancer book on the page but nothing in CK. Where is it? I'd like add that the Lung Cancer book, is by Walter Scott, b. 1954.

BTW, I also checked for singlets of Marmion multiple times (ensuring no cookie issues) over the past day and a half, and they did not appear for me. I am usually logged on to LT on at least three computers simultaneously; don't know if this could be a factor ....
I checked only in the "Sir Walter Scott" author record that my copy linked to. Perhaps my singlet existed in a different Walter Scott record?

>166 carport: >167 carport: Something needs to be done about the Sir Walter Scott author page certainly. Before writing a disambiguation notice for on CK for the Sir Walter Scott author page I'd like to have some indication it will stick. What happened to a previous notice not to combine the author name Walter Scott with Scott Walter?
There are currently four authors in LT with the name Walter Scott. The author names Sir Walter Scott and Walter Scott are combined, and to all practical purposes in LT they probably should be due to the large number of copies of Sir Walter's books involved.
I'd like to move any discussion about what we should do about the disambiguation notice to the Combiner's Group Information & Discussion Thread (but later have to go out now):
http://www.librarything.com/talktopic.php?topic=50653
Thanks for bringing this all out in the open carport. "Sir Walter Scott" may appear to be the master, but that could be because "Sir Walter Scott" has been set as the CK Canonical author name to display for all the variant names, including the author of the Lung Cancer Guidebook.

>171 PortiaLong: As I don't have any language skills I take these as a challenge and thought I would remind users to search for the ISBNs of Foreign language titles on using advanced search on WorldCat. Quite often you can find the original titles this way. I found two 10 lbers and separated them from Smokescreen, can't remember the titles, Rivalen? Paparazzo? or something (short term memory is going).
As I said above I just mention this as I've found this to be a very satisfying exercise when I feel like doing a little combining. You can find WorldCat in the green buy swap area in the top right corner of every workpage. If the link is not there you can add it.

PortiaLong,
Believe me, I have NO intention of combining the generic author with any of the others. I'm just cringing at the notion of having to separate several hundred copies of a book, one copy at a time, and then trying to combine them with the correct author. I was hoping someone who had table-level access would see this, and macro it into being.

Hi folks,
Just wondering why the single copies of "Mornings on Horseback..." that show up on the David McCullough author page (http://www.librarything.com/author/mcculloughdavid&all=books) don't show up on the combining page. Is there something that can be done, do you think?
Yours in confusion,

Hi, k4k -
That is odd.
There are technically ways to get these combined but you will notice that although they say 1 copy many (most?) do not have a member name listed.
I think that this may be a clue to some recent combining difficulties so I am going to leave them alone for now and have posted about them in this thread:

I've been doing some simple combining on various volumes of annual world's best SF, but there's more to be done (where the works are attributed to different authors, and ISBNs are lacking) so I'm asking for assistance. Interestingly, someone else has already spotted this needs to be done - they've added the various editions to the series and added disambiguation notices saying that they are actually the same work.

There are several works that I think are in German and it look like they can or should be combined with the other version of the same title, But I don't understand German or whatever language they are in.
Can someone who can understand these languages please take a look and see what they can do.

Ah so...my crimes come back to bite me -
when I added those books to the series I put in the disambiguation notices so that maybe people would add the editor (didn't work, did it?) so I could combine them.
I have never found a satisfactory way to find the series(es?) that I have worked on (short of wading through hundreds of CK entries - I can't get them to sort very well) - I always meant to go back...thanks for pointing this one out.
Combinations have been done and the unnecessary disambigs deleted (left the variant title ones of course).
