I'm getting The Passage by Justin Cronin!

My good luck continues! I landed The Art of Losing, an anthology of poems about grief. It won't be light reading, but I'm looking forward to it!

Okay, I always get excited when I win something, but I just snagged The Red Thread by Ann Hood and I just about jumped out of my skin when I read the news.

YES!!!

Everyone's ER books sound wonderful. Mine (after a few months' dry spell) sounds not so wonderful but is something I really need, having been a grinder and clencher for years. Anyway, I'm getting a copy of The TMJ Healing Plan: Ten Steps to Relieving Persistent Jaw, Neck and Head Pain. I'm hoping it lives up to its title. Thanks, LT!

Edited: Mar 4, 2010, 9:01 pm

Love the new algorithm - my first book since August 2008! I'm getting CroMagnon by Brian Fagan. I'm interested in archaeology and ancient history, so I'm quite pleased to get this from among the requests I made. I also realize that I've already some experience with this author in another media - a set of dvd lectures on ancient history from the Teaching Company available at my local library. Now I know I'll almost certainly enjoy it. Thanks!

After well over a year, I have snagged my first ER book. Once in a Blue Moon by Leanna Ellis. Honestly, this probably would not have been my first choice, but I am thrilled to finally have snagged ANY ER book.

Mar 4, 2010, 6:12 pm

My first month doing ER and I snagged two so far. Booth's Sister and When Can I Go Home? .

Are all the notices out? This is my first month doing ER so I'm not sure if we get a notice that says we didn't get it.

201dragones
Mar 4, 2010, 6:19 pm

ER notices go out for having been chosen to receive a book. If you get a notice that says you did not get chosen, that's for the entire batch. You don't get a not chosen notice on a per book basis.

Member Giveawy operates differently, in that you get not chosen notices per each book request... unless, of course, you get chosen, which brings you the happier notice instead. :)

I'm getting The Dead Travel Fast. I'm thrilled. Book sounds very interesting, and Raybourn is a ER author.

27cbl_tn
Mar 4, 2010, 6:31 pm

>19 dakotamidnight: I believe When Can I Go Home? must have been a Members Giveaway book, not an Early Reviewers book. ER members only get one book per ER batch, so if you've been told you're getting one book from the February batch, you'll know that you're not getting any of the others you requested.

My first win after 16 months of trying - Cromagnon.

29RBeffa
Mar 4, 2010, 6:35 pm

I am getting The Inheritance by Simon Tolkien (He's the grandson of JRR Tolkien). This month there were quite a few books that looked great to me so I am glad to have snagged this one. This looks like a great match for my taste in mysteries.

19>

Um, how did you get two books? You're not supposed to be able to, and using multiple accounts to increase your chances is explicitly prohibited. You're not confusing two completely separate things (i.e. Early Reviewers and Member Giveaways), are you? Assuming you aren't, this is probably a serious bug in the new algorithm, and Sonya needs to know about it.

I'm excited to be getting The Bread of Angels by Stephanie Saldana after a 10 month dry spell.

34dakotamidnight
Mar 4, 2010, 6:53 pm

You're right - When Can I Go Home was a MG book - they requested a review the same as ER and it was from the author so I considered it the same.

You can only get one ER book? Really? I would have requested differently had I known that.

35quilted_kat
Mar 4, 2010, 6:54 pm

Woohoo. Doing my happy book dance. Making Rounds With Oscar by David Dosa. I didn't notice the "announcements are delayed" message, so I had already given up on February. It's like Christmas!

41lorax
Mar 4, 2010, 7:47 pm

34>

You can only get one ER book? Really?

Yep. It's always been that way, for good reasons (to avoid having people request everything just to boost their chances). It's clearly explained in the rules.

they requested a review the same as ER and it was from the author so I considered it the same.

Understandable, but it's very confusing when they're described as the same, since technically they're totally different. It's important to try to remember which books are which when talking about them, since most of the rules and issues surrounding ER books don't apply to MG books, and there are endless threads about people complaining about "ER" books that turn out to really be "MG" books.

Mar 4, 2010, 7:59 pm

I got Heart of the Matter by Emily Giffin :o) I so love this Early Reviewer thing :o) Since I only buy pocket books, it used to be that "everybody" has read the book before I can get it... Now at least I can have a chance to read a book before most of everybody ;o)

Mar 4, 2010, 8:15 pm

Hurray, scored a copy of The Inheritance by Simon Tolkien. Very happy; I might well have bought a copy anyway but now (a) it saves me the $$ and (b) I don't have to wait! Had my name down for three books, all of which I really wanted to read (vs some last time I won that I was only lukewarm about), so am v. pleased. Second win in three tries, although this is def. a better match than the last book; may the algorithm continue to love me.

I am getting Diet for a Hot Planet. I will be very interested to read it because Diet for a Small Planet had a major impact on me in college and has continued to affect my eating choices since -- never mind that the recipes were goddawfull and involved a lot of soy grits which turned everything a greeny gray. Moosewood came out very quickly thereafter and rescued me.

I'm also receiving "The Inheritance"* by Simon Tolkien. I'm very curious now, I requested it because it sounds like my cup of tea. British mystery, library, espionage, all topics which I have lots of in my book collection, but just for fun I did the "will you like it" button and it said I would hate it. Hmmm.

*When I tried the touchstones, what came up is "Eragon." Weird.

Mar 5, 2010, 8:48 pm

#111: I think that happens when there aren't any reviews/ratings for a book. I also did the "will you like it" button for the book I'm getting for ER and it said the same thing. However, it also doesn't have any reviews/ratings yet, either, so perhaps they just don't have anything to base the "will you like it" on, if that makes sense.

Hope we both end up liking the books we're going to receive! :)

I'm eagerly awaiting The Undervalued Self by Elaine Aron, though I hope the subtitle is just some publisher's gimmick. Aron has written a series of excellent books about "Highly Sensitive Persons". From the pre-publication publicity (PPP?) I thought this would be part of that series, but maybe not. I guess I'll find out more when I get/review it. My first ER book.

I'm getting Romancing Miss Bronte by Juliet Gael. This could possibly be my best ER book yet. I am a great fan of Jane Austen and thought anything about that era would be good. Looking forward to reading and posting my review.

I received Frost Moon as my requested ER pick. I only opted for requesting one because I preferred it over any of the other selections and figured I had the best chance of getting it as an eBook with multiple copies up for review. And I did receive it.

The publisher also opted to give eBook copies of their other release Twice Dead by Kalayna Price with it; they decided to give anyone that was selected for one of their books, both books. So while we got selected for either Frost Moon or Twice Dead, we all received both. It works for me since the only reason I hadn't requested "Twice Dead" is because I haven't read the first book in that series yet. Time to find it. :-D

The Inheritance Cycle is the title Christopher Paolini gave to his series which begins with Eragon... so no mystery as to why there is a bit of confusion there. I'm sure that, given time, the touchstones will bring up Simon Tolkien's Inheritance as a choice, if not the default one.

I got Mathilda Savitch. I'm very excited! Whatever they changed about The Algorithm worked in my favor! I always knew I'd be excellent for ER since I read a lot and quickly and write reviews for everything I read, but I was never able to convince LT of that for ER. Until now!

I will be getting The Passage by Justin Cronin, which is fabulous because I have been stalking this book for two years now ever since my writing professor told us that his friend (Justin Cronin) would be writing a post-apocolyptic vampire fiction book that promised to be smart and thrilling. I had already ordered it on B&N but canceled my order promptly when I got word that it was coming to me from Library Thing. Thanks guys!

I am getting Heart of the Matter by Emily Giffin. I was ecstatic because I haven't requested a book in a few months so I wasn't expecting to get one so quickly. I have enjoyed Emily Giffin's other works so I am definitely looking forward to this one!

I also got Making Rounds With Oscar. My "helper" books must be the All Creatures Great and Small series by James Herriot and The Cat Who Went to Paris series by Peter Gethers. This will be my fifth ER book, although I still haven't received the 4th in the mail yet.

I chalk up my success to doing what they suggest - writing reviews!

I definitely think that having a larger library and writing reviews is a big help to winning ER books!

After a dry spell lasting about a year, I'm getting The Brontes Went to Woolworths. I'm really looking forward to it. I've wondered how much reviewing books helps. I had promptly reviewed every ER book I had received prior to the dry spell. I wonder if the demand is just so great that even if you do it all correctly, there are still going to be long gaps in getting anything.

I got Midnight Fires: A Mystery with Mary Wollstonecraft by Nancy Means Wright and I'm thrilled. This books sounds like it will be a good one! Of course, I had just ordered four new books, but I'm not complaining!

I have been on the list for a long time, and never got a book. But now I have won my third book in a row!Booth's Sister by Jane Singer.

What I don't understand is how there can already be two (Early reviewers) reviews for this book, while I have not even received the book yet.

Receuved Mrs. Somebody Somebody by Tracy Winn. This was my first month as a LT member and an ER reviewer. The book is a perfect fit for me, so I think the mysterious algorithm must work. I'm already two chapters in on my first day and I love it. I have a question about how and where to review it for the veterans. I added the book to my catalog of books under my username. Do I just review it there as I do any other book or is there a place or listing that I am specifically supposed to go to that indicates that I am an early reviewer? Thanks for the help. I think this is fabulous.

For those of you that have Kindles or are willing to download the software to read the Kindle books on your computer,... note that Mrs. Booth's Sister is available for free on Amazon. I got it for my Kindle. (many of the free books are junk - but this looked good) and couldn't very far in it before giving up. Glad I didn't get it ER and have to finish it. I'm sure it is someone's cup of tea though.

Does anyone know if the ebooks ever come in Kindle format? The pdf doesn't work so well.

Just review it there as you do with any other book. I believe it's possible to convert a pdf so it will show on your Kindle, but you'd need to check on how.

I got my first ER book yesterday: Arcadia Falls by Carol Goodman. I'm excited! In fact, I'm so anxious to read it that I was going to go out and buy it because who knows how long it would take the publisher to send it to me! But when I got home from work yesterday, there it was on the porch. Yippie! I can spend that $25 on some other book! :-D
