In 1964, Christaphine is married to Tommy when she discovers that he is planning to commit a horrible crime. She knows that she must stop him, but in doing so, she realizes that she can never return. Now, it is 2014, and Clemmie is pulled out of church by her friend, Muffin. Muffin tells Clemmie that she has seen a man from her past, and it terrifies her.

Janie Johnson is sick of being ordinary. She's a 90s kid. When she looks at a milk in the cafeteria, she recognizes herself as a little kid on the carton. Her family has secrets and she's scared to death about what she might uncover. She falls for the boy next door. She keeps the milk carton and a journal. The knowing and wondering tears her apart. She spends a lot of time in tears. The ending comes abruptly leading into the next volume.
Felt like it hasn't aged that well.

I'm no classicist, but I flatter myself that I know a bit more about ancient Greek history than the average Joe. But Cooney gave me a completely new perspective on the character of Helen, Paris and Menelaus. They became, for want of a better word, believable. As is so often the case, a wonderful book has been relegated to the YA shelves just because the protagonist is a young girl. Don't let that label keep you from reading this excellent tale. [Audiobook note: At first, I thought the narrator's voice was too deep for a young girl's. But once I got used to it, it did not impede my enjoyment. She does a first-rate narration.]… (more)
