Joost Zwagerman (1963–2015)

The release of these poems was after Zwagermans suicide and knowledge of this makes the poems interesting in a psychological way. Without this knowledge I would have given this book just one star. The metaphors are cliches, life hanging on a thin line?, come on! No strong images where provoked by his dry and static style. Honestly, it was a bit like an depressed teenager trying to be intellectual.

This novella was the 2010 Boekenweek gift. Zwagerman was an art-critic as well as a novelist. In this quirky tale of how the director of an important Amsterdam museum ended up putting his fist through a thirty-million-dollar Mark Rothko, he has a lot of fun playing around with questions about the respect and monetary value we attach to works of art, and the conflicts between the idea that art is there to be enjoyed and the idea that it is there to be preserved for the future.

Authors are rarely remembered for their essays. Like Susan Sontag, Joost Zwagerman's essays, though not of the stature of Sontag's, are much more impressive than his fictional work. Zwagerman's fictional work is praised for recreating an image of our time, a reflection of Zwagerman's deep involvement of the seedy side of the world of culture in the 1990s, but his essays show that the fount of his depth is very broad reading. His essays show an erudition and intellectual scope one could not show more glean from his fiction.

Door eigen hand. Zelfdoding en de nabestaanden, a collection of essays and interviews, is another work of profound significance, magnified by the author's death at his own hands in 2015, ten years after its publication.

This new edition, published in 2025, is expanded with more material, and previously unpublished essays about David Foster Wallace, Ernest Hemingway, David Vann and Kurt Cobain, and a previously unpublished interview with Andrew Solomon.

In 2009 besteedde Fotomuseum Huis Marseille in Amsterdam met de spraakmakende tentoonstelling ‘Only Gaze a While Longer‘ als eerste aandacht aan het nieuwe werk van de Nederlandse fotograaf Rob Nypels (1951). Nypels woont en werkt in het Massif Central in de Franse Auvergne. Die omgeving vormde de basis voor een, wat beeldvorm betreft, vernieuwende reeks landschapsfoto’s. Hij wilde hierin niet zozeer de natuur vastleggen als iets dat je van buitenaf ziet, maar meer als iets dat je van show more binnenuit ervaart. Het landschap wordt door hem al experimenterend en zoekend afgetast, waarbij de zachtheid van de gebruikte portretlens de vormen laat samenvloeien tot een abstract en kleurrijk geheel.

In ‘Illuminations’ – een titel die is ontleend aan het boek ‘Les Illuminations’ van de Franse dichter Arthur Rimbaud (1854-1891) – verlegt Nypels zijn aandacht van het natuurlandschap naar de stedelijke ruimte, waarin nog vaag de contouren van straten, pleinen, een kermis of eenzame objecten in geheimzinnige kamers te herkennen zijn. Elk fotobeeld is als een droom, die oplicht in de ‘tuin van de herinnering’.

Wie begiftigd is met die zeldzame oogopslag, vergroot de kans dat de nabije omgeving, maar ook een ver en weids landschap, of een besneeuwde bergtop, zich tonen in hun doorgaans verborgen weerloosheid.
