Very good books, at least I think so.
The Lord of the Rings is considered the book that started the whole fantasy genre.
World War Z is an account of the Great Zombie War as told in interview form.
The Name of the Wind is a fictitious biography of a legendary man Kvothe who went into hiding after earning the name Kingkiller.
A Storm of Swords is the third part in the Song of Ice and Fire series. It's a massive story full of political backstabbing and a huge cast of characters.
The Drawing of the Three is the second part of The Dark Tower series by Stephen King. It's about the gunslinger Roland who is on a quest to prevent the Dark Tower, which is the center of all universes, from collapsing and ending all there is.

My favorite books tend to change based on the mood I'm in. Right now, I'll have to go with:
1. The Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs
2. Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert
3. Half the Sky by Nicholas D Kristof
4. Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson
5. The first 6 books in the Anita Blake series by Laurell K. Hamilton

I saw the movie and thought it was rubbish as well. I felt like it didn't quite capture the amazingness of Elizabeth . . . or any of the other characters for that matter.
25peasantstories
Elizabeth is the author and main character of Eat Pray Love ( Elizabeth Gilbert ). Julia Roberts played her in the movie.

Oh sorry!!! I should have stated that I was replying to #19. Didn't mean to confuse you or anybody else. My apologies for this.
I've not read Twilight. For those that read it, what about the book really captured your interest?

well, >27 peasantstories:, beckylynn, i think that it was the amount of people that had read and loved the books that made me want to read it. I wasn't all that fond of the storyline, to be honest, but I thought that the author was very talented but that she could have written a book with a better plot. thats just my opinion. I would love to read something else by meyer and see if she could use her talent in a better way than a vampire romance novel. just my opinion.
30Mariah7
>27 peasantstories: i agree with sarahy, all the hype about it made me want to read it.
31beckylynn
Sarahy- agreed. I think I was definitely caught up in all the hype, however, it is nice to have those books that you can veg out to and not have to think about ANYTHING while you're reading them. They provide a nice escape...
32sarahy
>31 beckylynn:, i have to agree that you do have to zone out and forget everything, so that is definitely part of the appeal.

1. The Chronicles of Narnia, by C.S. Lewis
2. The Great Divorce, by C.S. Lewis
3. Hamlet, by Shakespeare
4. The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien (almost done with it - adore it; after I finish The Lord of the Rings they will probably be on this list)

And I don't think I can pick my favorite 5. I love so many books. :)

Ditto! I kept deleting and adding so many books; I mean, Wuthering Heights, Macbeth, the Harry Potter series, and so many other books should have made my list. It's so hard to pick favorites - it's like picking your favorite children. The books are my children. :)

The Knights Templar were a military order during the Middle Ages that were heavily involved in the Crusades. The Knights Templar in the National Treasure movie don't have that much of a relationship with the Middle Ages warriors, but are part of the Freemasons, a secret society.
40ErisofDiscord
They are pretty good movies! I've always enjoyed them, being a history buff.
42ErisofDiscord
Awesome!!!!!!!!! I know too much about American History, specifically the battles. My favorite era is the Revolutionary War.
45ErisofDiscord
My brother is the one who knows everything about World War I (actually he knows everything about history - really!) and he taught me some of it. Now that I think of it, though, I love to study the second World War and its the one I know the most about.
Oh! And I love studying Renaissance England, especially the literary scene! I love history! ♥

I do like history a lot. I wish we could study everything about each of our own favorite era. I find history the most fascinating with the small details.
47ErisofDiscord
It's the little things that make or change history. Did you know that William Shakespeare's daughters, Suzanne and Judith, were illiterate? One signed her name with an X, and the other couldn't recognize her husband's handwriting.
48mrmcfluff
Wow that's crazy!!
Isn't it true that William Shakespeare didn't even write the plays? Wasn't it a prince or something??
Isn't it true that William Shakespeare didn't even write the plays? Wasn't it a prince or something??
49ErisofDiscord
Some people say that - the issue is open for speculation, but most mainstream scholars think that Shakespeare wrote the plays and they defend Shakespeare quite enthusiastically (sometimes bordering on nastiness). I myself have a personal candidate who is not Shakespeare, but I could probably rattle on forever about him (I did write a 15 page term paper on the subject!), so I'll just say that my candidate is Christopher Marlowe, who was a commoner and playwright, and was a secret agent and spy for Queen Elizabeth. He supposedly died the same year Shakespeare first emerged as a writer with the publication of Venus and Adonis, so most people write him off as a candidate. However, Marlowe did 'die' under very peculiar circumstances and there are many questions about his alleged murder. I suggest this internet site, if you wish to investigate the matter: http://www.marloweshakespeare.org/
Another tidbit about Shakespeare - when he died in the beginning of the 1600's, he left a last will and testament. He was careful to leave swords to his fellow actors and the second best bed and the linens to his wife, Anne (the only things he left her, by the way), but there were no books. No books?????? Books were precious and valuable possessions during the Renaissance, and one would think that such a great writer as Shakespeare would have oodles of them. Nope. Not a book was mentioned in the will. Strange, ain't it?
Sorry I just rattled on for two paragraphs; I've been studying the Shakespeare authorship question for two years - I know far too much about it. :)

No it's so intresting!!
I thought someone named Jason Bacon was the original author of Shakespeare's plays??
I thought someone named Jason Bacon was the original author of Shakespeare's plays??
51ErisofDiscord
That's Francis Bacon; there are some people who have proposed him and he was the first person to be brought forth as an alternative candidate. You see, there are tons of candidates that have been proposed, some of whom are more ridiculous than others (Queen Elizabeth I and Cardinal Wolsey have been suggested, and I find both a little unlikely) and many who have some substance to the theories.
Bacon might have written Shakespeare's plays, but his writing was nothing like the plays. Have you ever tried to read Bacon? I did. Got two pages into one of his books and then fell asleep (and I'm a stubborn reader!). Bacon wrote books on philosophy, politics and math, but nothing artistic like the work of Shakespeare.
I think Marlowe is the best pick, because his style of writing is so similiar to Shakespeare and many mainstream scholars admit, that had Marlowe not 'died' so young, he would have been the rival of Shakespeare.

He very well might've. The strongest piece of evidence for Shakespeare is the endorsement of Ben Jonson, who was a poet and writer during the time of Shakespeare and who authored a dedication to the First Folio (the first collection of the plays of Shakespeare made after his death) that gave glowing praise to William Shakespeare. That is a very strong piece of evidence, but it is the only sizable one.
Stated briefly, some of the objections to William Shakespeare as an author are:
1. No books are mentioned in his will, yet all the plays were made by a person who had a 30,000 word vocabulary. When people read lots, their vocabulary grows. When they don't, it is average. Given Shakespeare's vocabulary, one would imagine that he had lots of books. But at the time of his death, there were none mentioned in his will.
2. At Shakespeare's death, he was ignored by his patron, the Earl of Southhampton. This is unusual, as writers and actors of a great caliber were usually mourned vocally by their patrons; when Christopher Marlowe was supposed to have died, his patron, Thomas Walsingham, went into severe mourning.
3. His daughters were uneducated (you read The Taming of the Shrew and education was a very big part of nicening up Kat; the majority of Shakespeare's female protagonists were all educated - why would Shakespeare neglect his own daughters, yet write about these educated women?)
4. There is no evidence that Shakespeare ever attended school. Most scholars say that he probably went to grammar school in Stratford-upon-Avon, but 'probably' is all that they factually can say. We don't know. He might have. We know for certain that he never went to college.
I could go on forever as there are other objections that my brain has momentariy forgotten, but I would like to link to a collection of quotations from mainstream Shakespearian scholars about Shakespeare (provided by the Marlowe-Shakespeare theorists). Even they say that the man Shakespeare is a great mystery. http://www.marloweshakespeare.org/AuthorshipStratfordian.html

*laughs* I think you'd be the only one interested, though. Everybody else that I know looks at me like I have a huge wart on my head when I start talking about the Shakespeare authorship question.
56ErisofDiscord
What can I say? There's a reason why I wrote 15 pages on the subject, even though I was only required to write 10. :)
58ErisofDiscord
You bet. :) Plus, I just like writing. Easiest thing for me to do.
60ErisofDiscord
You just have to work at it, like anything else. If you keep writing, it will come easier and easier. I've been writing a lot since I was six, so that's why it feels easy to me.
63ErisofDiscord
A bit, but mine are either hit or miss. My best ones come when I'm least expecting them. How about you, Sarah?

The Dark is Rising series, The Queen's Thief series, Demon's Lexicon series, Crown Duel/Crown Duel by Sherwood Smith, and Hero's Song/Fire Arrow by Edith Pattou. These are definitely 5 of my favs but it was very difficult to narrow it down.
