**Please read as there have been modifications**
_________________________________________

This thread is for LT’ers or thingamabrarians, or members, or their designees, to post combining or separating problems with their books.

** If a book has been combined with a book that is extremely different from the original.
** If a book won’t combine with the other books just like it.
** There is a problem with the entry & it is just too overwhelming to deal with.

________________________________________

WHEN YOU POST:

Give us the TITLE & author, plus any other information you think we might need & please NUMBER them if you post more than one.

Example:
..Please combine:

#1: The story of the life of you
http://www.librarything.com/work/XXXXXX
http://www.librarything.com/work/YYYYYYYY

#2: The story of the life of everyone else
http://www.librarything.com/work/WWWWW
http://www.librarything.com/work/ZZZZZZZZ

** Please do not give us search pages or author pages.
Give us concrete & specific works to be combined, not groups of possibles, unless you have questions. Series pages can be helpful.

** You can ask us to look at a set of works to ask our opinions or ask if someone with a specific language or subject knowledge look at your request, but please be brief.

** Make your request easy for yourself & for the combiners who will help you.

Then you can just wait, “and someone will be with you shortly.”
Please, keep in mind this work is done by volunteers, not LT staff.

*** If you number multiple requests, it makes it easier if someone can only work on part of a request.

*** If you edit your post to add new items to be combined, please indicate that they are new by preceding with “ETA:” or “Edit:”.

*** Also, please indicate when a request has been "DONE".
________________________________________

Tim’s Guidelines for Proper Etiquette for contacting members about their book records:

“For this topic, I still feel strongly that I’d like to consider it bad form. Many others agree with me. But a few think I’m dictating and are angry about that. So, fine. Let’s just write some guidelines up. I propose that the guidelines be something along the lines of:

* Remember that LibraryThing is used for many different reasons. The way you use and enjoy the site is not necessarily the way others do.
* Be sensitive to how the member is using LibraryThing. Approach members who show no interest in the social side more cautiously.
* Try to provide helpful information and ask questions rather than dictating.
* If the user indicates displeasure at the request, let it drop.
* When in doubt, raise the issue in the Combiners! group before sending a message.”

________________________________________

Skittles’ note: I would like to add that we should ALWAYS use private comment when we absolutely must contact a LT’er, even when their response isn’t private.
_______________________________________

Dr Mike’s (aka theapparatus) note:

If both works that need to be combine have more than 200 records, please post your request in this thread:

http://www.librarything.com/topic/95602

You need staff intervention to handle that request.
________________________________________

When this thread reaches approximately 200 posts, DO NOT POST HERE, but go to thread #43. This thread will be easier to handle if we keep it under 200 (faster loading). Please copy any notes or instructions to the new thread. Thank you.

Feel free to add comments &/or suggestions ... not just “challenges.”

** There is also a Combiner’s Group Information, FAQ & Discussion Thread #2 at: http://www.librarything.com/topic/57164 . That thread is for combining information, discussion in general, not for problems ... .

I just got called in for bloodwork (Not supposed to have it on wednesdays) right in the middle of working on grammartroll's single works.

I did some author combining and was in the middle of combining individual works within those authors.

Can someone finish up for me please on these two?

http://www.librarything.com/author/parkerrobertb-1

http://www.librarything.com/author/koontzdean

I believe i had done most of them but with the tiny screen, it's hard to tell.

If not, I can finish them up later today.

Hi, can someone please fix this book http://www.librarything.com/work/9026170/summary/78134085
It should only be 'Piano Specimen Sight-reading Tests: Grade 4'

But one person has 6 copies and another person has a copy that isn't grade 4. I have tried to go to the author page but I can't find the other copies to separate it. I think it is because they haven't put the author down, which is 'The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music'

Thanks

16> Go to the editions page of the work (link in the left-hand column), you can separate editions that don't belong from there and it looks like there are quite a few that should be separated (there are Grades 1, 2, 3, and 6 mixed in there).

I;m going ahead and combing them.

edit: There's a volume 2 with volume 3's ISBN. Per policy, I'm leaving it with the volume 2. It'll screw up the isbns but per policy, title overrules isbn.

See what you think of the "Ordeal of the Union" Series now; not sure what (if anything) to do for Disambiguation Notices, to try and keep it straight.

On Neue Arbeit, neue Kultur, it looks like somebody had done the separations, so I combined; still, there are a few Verlage in Nordrhein-Westfalen 2003 ISBNs incorrectly assigned to the combined Work -- nothing we can do about that!

This is a question, hopefully someone can find confirming evidence (and if so place a disambiguation notice, or separate the two if needed):

Is the book
New world by Gillian Cross the same as The demon headmaster by Gillian Cross? (See editions.)

Managed to untangle the German one as well - based on the plot as well.
I think now they are cleanly separated - all covers recalculated to pull the proper ones in the proper works so I think this is done (and someone did the disambig notice while I was separating so we should be all set)

62bookel
Sep 21, 2011, 5:53 am

Yes, sorry, I did the disambig. for The Demon Headmaster. It may have been some kind of automatic combining error when adding the book (???) I really don't know, as when I added New World it was already combined with The Demon Headmaster. Hopefully that shouldn't happen now they're separated. Thanks for the help, I really needed an objective opinion and didn't think to check for the author's website (and not being familiar with the books). It was one I found today.

> #63-67, @theapparatus & @AnnieMod: I vote LOUDLY for not combining these -- at least not yet.

Gift of Friendship looks like a near-generic title applied to similar, but probably not the same, anthologies. Or maybe I just need to see where the Elisabeth Deane title is more fully described, and/or attributed to Peter Pauper Press? Is she the author of a particular contribution here?

We have a number of 1960s-1980s PPP editions, including collections edited by Nick Beilenson. (No, none of them are yet cataloged on LT!) I would have to check whether this title, or anything of Elisabeth Deane is also in our collection. At a minimum, in my experience, PPP is generally straight-forward in their editions, and not given to variations in titles, subtitles and authors.

I would welcome input or feedback from others. Thank you!

ETA: I stand corrected ... sorta. Looking only for the primary title, Gift of Friendship, on www.bookfinder.com yields an absolute blech-full of options, none of which appears to have either Elisabeth Deane's name or subtitle associated with it. Beilenson's 1987 edited collection comes up as two potential variants. However, searching for keywords "Gift Friendship Collection Warm Beautiful Thoughts About Love One Heart Another" in the title field produced a number of results for -- and only for! -- Elisabeth Deane's 1969 PPP compilation of (substantially) the same title.

Still, unless somebody has the two editions to compare (maybe I do!), I'd still argue to distinguish between them. My 2¢; thanks again.

I just did some clean up on Karen Robards as well as matched up the "i have 8 of her books" records:

There's about 6 foreign language titles listed that I can't match up with anything in english. "The thief with gold eyes" I guess doesn't go with the one with green eyes.

Can someone check on these please? Appears to be titles in french and spanish.

There's a series of young reader adaptations of the Dragonlance Chronicles, which I've put into a series http://www.librarything.com/series/Dragonlance+Chronicles%2C+Young+Reader+Adapta... . I noticed that Mervyn Peake the man and his art has four separate entries if you do a search on the title.
There are two separate author entries, one entry with no author and another entry with two authors.

My copy of the book says compiled by Sebastian Peake and Alison Eldred / edited by G. Peter Winnington
ISBN 0720612845 Peter Owen Pub

Could someone with greater ability than me please combine them into one.

I'd probably keep the two with truncated titles and next-to-no detail ("TB" and "Ig") separate, just because we can't really tell anything about them; it does look like somebody deliberately cataloged them separately, and made (minimal) effort to distinguish between them.

On the main work ( http://www.librarything.com/work/195578 ), I found several records that I'm also inclined to separate out based on title and/or author alone -- so I did! See:

Well, if you watch it through insta-play then you can only see the movie itself. If you get the DVD sent to your home then occasionally it's a version of the DVD made especially for rental that doesn't include bonus features. That seems to happen more often for recent movies.

The first link has the correct author. The second link has ?? as the author, but the review makes it clear that it is the same as the first. The third must be the same book, since it's tagged science fiction and the "first name" Hoyle matches up with the real author Fred Hoyle. How Wickramsinghe (presumably Chandra) got in there, I don't know. He does have a connection with Hoyle, but I don't think they ever collaborated on anything other than some articles and Wickramsinghe's PhD thesis.

I have managed to get the reader (and one of his theory books) separated out of The McDonaldization of Society but am unsure about how far to go with the rest.

There is a Thesis book mixed in as well. I would be tempted to separate that as well, due to the fact that it is a book that explains his McDonaldization theory.

The different editions... McDonaldization of Society 5, The McDonaldization of Society 6... should they be separated out as well? The original was written in 1993, and not updated until the late 2000's. the '6' book was released last year.

Any thoughts?

There are 5 short stories by Mankell, as was shown in the series I created a while back: http://www.librarything.com/series/Pyramiden+-+5+short+stories (before work-to-work relationships)

Problem is, one of the short story titles is used for the short story collection. In English, the 5th is used (The pyramid). In German, the 1st is used. Might be even different in other languages, and not all short stories might be published individually in all languages.

Not exactly a combining question but i'm hoping someone can help. Brother/sister team Georges and Madeleine de Scudéry have separate LT author pages but also have one co-authored book for which they're listed as a single author: http://www.librarything.com/author/scuderymadeleineetge-2

In trying to split them, i inadvertently created a disambiguation page that didn't quite fit what i was trying to do. Rather than make it worse, i thought i'd check whether one of you fixers could lend a hand. The book in question (Artamène ou le grand Cyrus) is generally listed as Madeleine's, and there is a copy on her page that should be combined when this is all resolved.

You can't split an author page for two authors into two different authors, that function is for a single name that refers to multiple different people of the same name (for example there are many authors named Michael Collins). I've put the author page http://www.librarything.com/author/scuderymadeleineetge back to being not split (there's only one group of two people with those names).

If you post links to the works here, we can do something about that.

It is also possible (though currently only in beta testing) to assign two authors to a single work.

Is the author listed for http://www.librarything.com/work/11815285/book/78784949 Paul Stewart? If so, the easiest way would be to go to that author's page - http://www.librarything.com/author/2783070162 - then click Search in the pink box on the right, under Combine with. Search for Paul Stewart and combine the two author pages together. You can then combine the works from the author's combine/separate page.

It's complicated slightly by the fact that there's more than one Paul Stewart, you'll have to do the work combining from the disambiguation page - on Paul Stewart's page http://www.librarything.com/author/stewartpaul-1 it's in the pink box on the right, under Combine/Separate Works, the link that says "Paul Stewart (disambiguation)".

I'm going to throw this out since I'm really tired and don't want to screw something up.

I think that these are a couple of different authors mixed together because of misspellings of the last names:

http://www.librarything.com/author/elliotbruce

http://www.librarything.com/author/elliottbruce

I see the same titles on both lists. They just need to be combined.

thanks

There is at lease one legitimate with double t and one with a single t. So I would keep them separate and just alias the way it is already done....

180 Actually I think there's at least 4 authors in there. :)

I'm more concerned about the books that exist on both author's lists. I did a couple of them last night but, flipping between tabs got me confused and when that happens, I know I'm too tired to do any good.

I'll look at it in a couple of hours after some volunteerism that I'm really late to if no one else gets to it.

Then let's split and alias around :) And yeah - there are a few.
I am on my way out of the door to catch a plane so can work in that once I am back on the ground if noone gets to it.

I'm on my locked down terminal so I can't do any combining but I'll look at it later.

If somebody can tell me how to separate all of "The Pyramid" I'd be happy to recombine them correctly - I only know about clicking on each book to separate them out.

I'm back on my locked down terminal so I can't check these. They may be the same author. I see at least one title on both authors though:

http://www.librarything.com/author/hoffmanneleanor

That Mischief in Fez one.

thanks

Hello, I've found a Lord of the Rings volume attributed incorrectly to Guy Kawasaki instead of J.R.R. Tolkien. I've been inactive on LT, and am not sure of potentially new combining protocols. Will someone please fix this?

I don't think that's a good idea as the title and ISBN match http://www.librarything.com/work/15061. Only the author matches with the work you suggest.

It's also a 0 copy work. Best leave it on it's own.

>192 carport:

At first I suspected a spam work, the guy being apparently an author of business strategy guides, which may sometime go hand in hand with less than pristine and respectful SEO practices, but if there were such, they go back further in time than the creation of the LT entry, since there *is* a borked Amazon entry of LotR with him as the author, which this user must have inadvertently used when adding their copy.

The best would be to contact this user "Thalador" who apparently has it in their library in good faith, and if still active ask if they would kindly correct the author for that book before we merge it.

> #189 @Laia: I'm not aware of any way to separate LT records except one at a time. And it probably needs to be done by someone who has a bit of time, can keep track of what's separated, and be sure that all (or almost all) of the separations get properly re-combined in due course. Note: When I've done this before, it's often been helpful to first identify one, predominant edition that matches the primary record, then start subtracting away (and re-combining among themselves) the less frequent occurrences; just a thought ... . Please let us know if / when we can help once you get started.

> #199 @theapparatus: It all appears to be the same author. I know of no reason to keep them split.

I can't find anything about Jabber Jaws or Maybe Baby, but Judging by the catalogues they are in, I would guess that they are meant to be the same person. Love in a Nutshell is due to be released next year. I agree, should not be split.

Please combine:

They list different authors because the former has the author of this particular volume in the author field, the later the series editor.
