Original SantaThing thread

SantaThing page

SantaThing Arrivals Map 2011 (first page now shows 1-200 only)

Full Arrivals Map

By popular request, we'll keep track of SantaThing arrivals here, and on the map. Feel free to post, if you like:

- where you're located (not your specific address, just your city or something identifiable for the map)
- which bookstore your SantaThing order came from
- the date on which it arrived

I'll keep track of these and plot them on the map.

Note: this is voluntary; you certainly don't have to post if you don't want to!

While we wait, a cautionary note and then some numbers. As usual it looks like some orders are being split into several shipments, so if you only get one book and it seems like it's probably not your whole order, it's very likely that more books are headed your way.

Now, numbers!

I also have data on top books ordered. Do you all want to see some of that now, or will it spoil surprises? Or, do you want to guess? (Hint: four titles share the top spot; each was picked six times).

Part of me thinks you should wait until Christmas to post the statistics, and the other part of me wants it now now now

5keristars
Dec 12, 2011, 1:33 pm

No, I wanna know now, too! There's no way I can guess. Well, I will guess that one's Gaiman? he's usually a popular suggestion. I'd also guess Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children, or whatever that ER title was a few months ago that was so popular, but I'm probably wrong on both.

6ryvre
Dec 12, 2011, 1:37 pm

I'd like to know now! Maybe it could be in a separate thread? That way people who want to avoid it till Christmas can still see the tracking thread.

7tottman
Dec 12, 2011, 1:39 pm

I'd like to know now. I'm not going to wait til xmas to open the package when it arrives, so to be consistent, I vote for not waiting here either:)

8KarenElissa

I'm all for hearing now, but I'm with tottman, I HIGHLY doubt that my package will make it to Christmas either... :D

Dec 12, 2011, 2:10 pm

OH. Now I'm curious about how many books were ordered total - at least 1090, yes?

So just 6x4 out of 1090 shouldn't spoil the surprise for anyone... I mean, it's a small percentage of the total number of books ordered, you can't really be certain you'll be one of them...

11_Zoe_
Dec 12, 2011, 2:22 pm

I'd definitely like to see the top books! Putting it in a separate thread is a good idea so that those who want to wait can.

Mine is here already! A package form Amazon.ca arrived on my step here in southern Ontario. It was delivered by UPS. I don't order books from Amazon myself, so it must be my SantaThing present. I put it under the tree, and I'm going to try to wait for Christmas. It feels like it contains at least two paperbacks. I'm so excited!

YAY! I hope that i dont get confused. I ordered my mom's christmas present from amazon last week and I got my santathing books from amazon too. I'm trying to wait until christmas to open the santathing packages, hopefully I wont get confused. That would not be good.

Dec 12, 2011, 4:28 pm

I haven't been home yet but I am curious because we usually get lightning fast delivery from Amazon.

Are the packages marked as being from LT? Even so, unless my books look like Aunt Sally's Pralines or some Calvin Klein men's cologne, I should be able to tell. I haven't ordered any books for myself lately.

Will there be a thread to talk about what books we got?

Amazon.ca strikes again, Southern Ontario (London). I order so often I ripped it open not even thinking it could be SantaThing yet. Three books, none of which I have read, all of which sound perfect.

Jeremy - are the colors for the flags automatically chosen? Because it might be more informative to group the origin by color, rather than the arrival date. That is, all the Amazons be blue, Powells be yellow, BD in red, and so on.

42jbd1
Dec 13, 2011, 6:00 pm

Yeah I was wondering that - right now I have them colored by day. Would store be more useful? Easily switched.

43jbd1
Dec 13, 2011, 6:03 pm

Switched to store color - let me know what folks think, we can go back to date easily enough.

44keristars
Dec 13, 2011, 6:09 pm

It would be awesome if Google had a way to do multiple shades of the same color. Because then we could track day and store.

As it is, I appreciate having it by store, because then I can take a quick peek and see when each store's packages have started arriving, and where, as the colored flags increase.

Thanks!

70jbd1
Dec 14, 2011, 10:42 am

Amazon.de reports that three of the four packages have been delivered, but the Santees haven't reported it here yet. Likewise at least four more Amazon.ca packages have been reported delivered, and eight more Amazon.co.uk orders should be delivered as well.

Thanks so much. Presumably the "don't pick ebooks" was a relic from previous years that should have been deleted from the instructions, or amended to "don't pick ebooks unless they specifically ask for them?"

70> I guess some people don't know of this thread and don't report when their books arrive. I know my Santee has received her books, she added them to her inventory yesterday, but so far she has not reported here.

Maybe a notice in the LibraryThing Blog would be useful and more people would leave a message here :)

That said, I also requested print books for my 7-year-old daughter, and they arrived today, in Seattle, WA, from Powell's. And a great big thank you to her Santa, who did a wonderful job interpreting her tastes with only my brief description rather than a whole library to go on. We're both excited about sharing the stories together.

Berlin calling: one successful delivery from Amazon.de

in theory: Dec. 13th
in practice: Dec. 17th

Amazon.de was fast, but those delivery guys of Deutsche Post seem to be a bit overwhelmed those days.
From the markings on the package I can deduce that they tried to deliver the package first on the 13th, then tried again on the 14th to no avail (no surprise, as I am not at home during regular delivery times), finally they filled out a notification card and sent it with the regular post on the 15th which arrived in my mailbox on the 16th, so that I finally could collect the box at the post office today...
I still remember those days, when the delivery guy just left a notification card on the first unsuccessful delivery trial and I could pick up the box at my post office right the next day.

252 yes that would be interesting. LA County has 9 million people, which is more then each of 40 other whole states have, if I'm correct. Captain Obvious here reminding us of mediating factor.
I was surprised by the amazing libraries in Montana when I was visiting there. Maybe they don't need to buy books! I had to talk to the librarian and ask where the heck they got the money because I had not seen such great libraries in California. It was from a special tax she said it took em a Long time to get.

Whilst I am waiting for MY BOOKS, twiddles thumbs,
whistles off key, I thought I would wile away the time by asking trivial questions to my USAers.

Did you have to learn all 48/49/50 states when you were a kid? And their 2 letter abbreviations?

256Helenoel
Dec 17, 2011, 9:24 pm

Well, when I was a kid the two letter abbreviations were not yet standard, but we learned all the states and their capitals and the old standard abbreviations - and could label a blank map with the right names. I do remember when # 49 and 50 became states, though I wasn't yet learning them in school.

257mkboylan
Dec 17, 2011, 9:42 pm

255 no books here yet either. And yes, what helenoel said!

258keristars
Dec 17, 2011, 10:07 pm

255> When I was a kid, they had just standardised the abbreviations (according to my grade 4 language & writing textbook, which could very well have been out of date). Not only did we have to learn all 50 states, place them on a map, and know the capitals, but we had to know the old abbreviations and the new 2 letter codes.

I imagine it's not much different than any other country's "basic knowledge for being a citizen", such as British kids having to learn the order of the monarchs from William the Conqueror on. We had to learn the countries/capitals in Europe, too, when we got to WW1/WW2 in history class in grades 7 and 8, at least at my school.

Edited: Dec 17, 2011, 10:44 pm

Thanks, #256-258,

Well here in Aussi it's easy. Lets see there is that hugh state in the west ( about one third of Aussie, and much bigger than Texas and Alaska) There is Queensland (our "deep" North) there is the civilized state, Victoria and of course, that other state, NSW. Oh and the rest!

Now, do you still remember ALL the state capitols, you learnt as kids?

My next question. Did you have to learn ALL your Presidents,
Their years of office, etc?

I can honestly say that I only learnt our Prime Ministers when I started to read some Australian history when I was in my 30's.

PS. Of course I should mention SA and Tassie and the "almost state" NT. They are tough in NT and might send a "contract" out if I am "disrespectful".

261lahochstetler
Dec 17, 2011, 11:24 pm

We had to learn the presidents in order, though not their specific years. We did have to be able to place Grover Cleveland correctly in both places (he had 2 non-consecutive terms).

262keristars
Dec 17, 2011, 11:47 pm

259> If pressed, I believe I could recite all the state capitols. I'm hopeless at the geography, though, unless I'm drawing out a map. Just last year, I learned that Boston is north of New York - despite knowing very well where they are when I see an unlabeled map/outline of the coast. (I also learned that snow comes from clouds last year, which was a bit of a revelation. It's a theoretical vs practical knowledge sort of thing.)

We didn't have to learn the specific years that presidents were in office, but we did have to learn how many terms and the general decade of those terms. I expect that different schools have students learn different things, and you'll always hear reports about how terribly ignorant any particular age group of students is about things like the fact that Cleveland had two non-consecutive terms, or that F. Roosevelt was elected 4 times, or that Ben Franklin didn't actually serve as president.

I genuinely am checking the mailbox six or seven times a day. Seeing so many books turning up in the West Island is just one more reason to sigh loudly and eat Christmas Biscotti ...

Dear Jeremy,

Obviously I am infatuated with "Secret Santa" as well I should be after 2 years of trying to get on :-)

Just a minor critism though, I find I seem to be "flying" between 3,4,5 different threads to find out what is happening :-(

Perhaps next year JUST have a single thread (even though it
does get large) so I can find out what's err. happening.

I agree with Guido insofar as it is easy to lose the SantaThing-related threads in all the other conversations. Maybe next year, you could start a SantaThing 2012 group where you could find all the related threads in one place. It would also be good if people would automatically join the group when they signed up and anyone else could join in the usual way.

>381 guido47:+ Let's not have that discussion in this thread, please. I'd like to get through this year's SantaThing before we start talking about the next one. It's a little confusing because they didn't match like with like; so my books came from Powell's (arrived last night in the DC area) but I had to order for my Santee from Amazon, because that's what she had requested. #400 by @lorax> i ordered Santee gifts from BD and Amazon, but i think the confusion is just totally my own. i went back and forth with myself over which to choose: i would rather support BD and i didn't blame them for last year, but i also worried about shipping times and those darned fluctuating prices. obviously i decided on BD, but for some reason remembered it the other way around.

turns out that Amazon is guilty of fluctuating prices as well this holiday season, as one book i picked for a Santee went up $10 from the time i picked it to the time LT went to order it. which was a total bummer since i had that order down to perfection.

Wanted to let you know that I received a book. It has the Library Thing logo on the package and I got someone else to open the package for me because I am confused with the packaging. I asked my books to be sent from Powell's. On the Library Thing label it says also Royal Mail (postage paid Gloucester) and then it also says Air Mail (par avian). Does that mean it wasn't sent from the United States? or is that for mailing purposes as a return address for other countries?

Anyway, It is:

my UPS driver said that some things would still be delivered on Christmas Eve, but he wasn't sure if it would be anything that was deliverable or just things that had been "guaranteed" by UPS. not sure how many of the still undelivered SantaThing packages might fall under that umbrella, but i'm holding onto a tiny bit of hope that my books will still get here.

if they don't, i'll be the tiniest bit sad but not overly worked up about it. books are books whether they are under the tree or not.

Just in time for Christmas! I did open it, and found 3 books that look very interesting ;) I can really tell that my santa went through my library and gave a lot of thought before coming up with this great selection. Thanks so much! and I really appreciate all the work that the people at librarything put into this project (particularly with the logistical difficulty of allowing participation from international locations).

1 Hour to go to the 25th here.
Although, when I was a child, we would get our presents, from under the tree on the 24th. About 6pm.

Or....as someone else said:

Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low-stress, non-addictive, gender-neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced with the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, with respect to other religious/secular traditions of others and/or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all. I also wish you a personally fulfilling, fiscally successful, and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of of the generally accepted calender year of 2012, but not without due disrespect for the calenders of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make America great. My package arrived on the 22rd (or 23rd- not quite sure) from BD (I am in sweden if that matters :) ) :D

There was some letter fail though :P as in alphabet letters; in swedish we have å, ä, ö (in addition to the rest- same as in english alphabet) and my last name starts with one of them, as well as the second letter of the city i live in and both words had disappeared completely from the address note. The package still found its way to me (yay :D), but i thought i'd just mention it here that it might be worth to mention as a note in the rules or something that one shouldn't use letters not in the english alphabet to be on the safe side- those letters can be changed for a, a and o an people will understand what it's supposed to be :)

Dec 29, 2011, 9:02 pm

>623 KarenElissa: I'm not sure why it would be, but I think some are not showing in that list. The reason I say that is that I donated a SantaThing to someone, and I was curious to see what their Santa had chosen for them, but they are not on the list. As I said, I don't know why that would be, except that they had set their SantaThing sign-up to private so no one could leave comments -- perhaps that is a factor?

625KarenElissa
Dec 29, 2011, 9:11 pm

>except that they had set their SantaThing sign-up to private so no one could leave comments -- perhaps that is a factor?

That must be it, looking through the list, nothing is marked private, so they must not be there anymore.

626thornton37814
Edited: Dec 29, 2011, 9:37 pm

Yes - the SantaThing was private. It's no longer there. Under my SantaThings, all I have is me. When I search on the person, it's not there.

ETA: I was extremely concerned because this person asked for books that totally did not match my reading tastes. It was the case of the person having a small library on which to compare. Most of the books on which we matched were completely random ones. I did find a colleague whose reading tastes seemed simlar to suggest things while I was logged in.
