Of course I read all the introductions, notes, etc.! I scoff at the implication that I am a page-count inflater! What seems more likely to happen is that I read the book in hardcover, then see that the page count on Amazon is for the paperback, which is usually lower due to denser print. It's depressing.

I'm in a contest with another reader, and we both agreed to use the Amazon page count so as to avoid the temptation to choose an edition based on large font size. ;-)

Oh believe me, I run into the same difficulties considering how many audio books I listen to. Fortunately I can nab solid numbers from the great "look inside" Amazon feature, praise be to Bezos. The trickiest books are the longest where editions can have page counts that vary by hundreds of pages:

Oxford World's Classics: 944
Penguin Popular Classics: 720

I've also picked on some standard page counts that publishers simply adapt font size and line spacing to meet. So in the end I guess the the only thing that truly matters is that we read them :)

I think one day we'll all read e-books, and then we can compare kbs. You can tell someone you read an entire mg.

I read all of "The Recognitions" in 24 hours!

To read "The Recognitions" in 24 hours, consecutive or otherwise, is a remarkable achievement (and those were 1000 oversized pages of infamously challenging text!) How did you find it?

Well, I went to Powell's and looked under G... ;-)

I loved it. I think reading it in one sitting actually helped the flow. The party scenes were antic and there were a number of things that made me laugh out loud. I'm looking forward to reading "JR" when I do the NBA's - maybe in '11. (Thinking of Bookers next year).

PS They were actually 24 consecutive hours (23 hours 20 minutes) - I decided to do only one book for this fall's read-a-thon.

I wasn't entirely certain that you could pull off the magic 500 given your numbers on the 15th but you really pulled out all the stops (43 books in 2 weeks?! Yikes!)

I was lucky; we all had an "involuntary vacation" for 10 days at my work. I was also able to finish some things I had bookmarks stuck in. You might notice that I also read shorter books!
