Frances Hodgson Burnett (1849–1924)

I'd read this before in a short story anthology. I found an 1888 edition (handwriting inside the cover from 1890) at a thrift shop last week and tenderly re-read it. The story still made me laugh at the sweet little girl's absurd decisions.

2.5 stars. After watching "The Making of a Lady" on PBS I was interested in the book it was based on, especially when I heard the author's name. I preferred the film, which of course was more suited to a contemporary audience. Part 1 was quite interesting, but Part 2 got more & more soap-opera-ish as the end neared.

Absolutely delightful. I had fond memories of it from childhood, so I picked up the Kindle edition. There is a delightful narrative that kept me hooked and I could hardly wait to finish it.

A fantastic little book, the kind that makes you feel glad to read literature. It's a tale of change, of healing, of growing and finding happiness in the most simple way. In our modern world of depression and anxiety, classics like this will never lose their importance.
