Combining/Separating (Please Fix This Book!) Request Thread #29!!!

This topic is currently marked as "dormant"—the last message is more than 90 days old. You can revive it by posting a reply.

This thread is for LT'ers or thingamabrarians, or members, or their designees, to post combining or separating problems with their books.
**If a book has been combined with a book that is extremely different from the original.
**If a book won't combine with the other books just like it.
**There is a problem with the entry & it is just too overwhelming to deal with.
________________________________________...

It has been suggested many times that there be a single thread for LT'ers to post combining & separating problems so that;
** they can learn how to do it
** they can get help when needed
** just want someone else to do it (usually, they can't understand how to do it... which is normal... or don't have the time)
**and finally, those LT'ers who "enjoy" combining can have a place to look to first to see what fun can be had helping LT be the best place to catalog books.
________________________________________...

WHEN YOU POST:
Please give us HYPERLINKS or URLs, not touchstones. Hyperlinks to the pages where the problems exist are much more accurate than a touchstone when there is a problem.
Give us the title & author, plus any other information you think we might need.

Then you can just wait, "and someone will be with you shortly."
________________________________________...

Tim's Guidelines for Proper Etiquette for contacting members about their book records:

"For this topic, I still feel strongly that I'd like to consider it bad form. Many others agree with me. But a few thing I'm dictating and are angry about that. So, fine. Let's just write some guidelines up. I propose that the guidelines be something along the lines of:

*Remember that LibraryThing is used for many different reasons. The way you use and enjoy the site is not necessarily the way others do.
*Be sensitive to how the member is using LibraryThing. Approach members who show no interest in the social side more cautiously.
*Try to provide helpful information and ask questions rather than dictating.
*If the user indicates displeasure at the request, let it drop.
*When in doubt, raise the issue in the Combiners! group before sending a message."
________________________________________...

Skittles' note: I would like to add that we should ALWAYS use private comment when we absolutely must contact a LT'er, even when their response isn't private.

and yes, this thread is similar to putting all of our problems together for people to see & say, "oh, no!! LT isn't perfect!!" or "Look at all of the problems that LT has." That isn't the case here. This is a place to gather "challenges" together to make it easier & faster to "fix" them. Let's just remember that "bad" data comes from people... people who make mistakes.. WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES! (ok, there are a couple of perfect people around here) Instead of complaining about the problem, let's fix it.
________________________________________...

Dr Mike's (aka theapparatus) note:

If both works that need to be combine have more than 200 records, please post your request in this thread:

http://www.librarything.com/topic/95602

You need staff intervention to handle that request.

________________________________________...

When this thread reaches approximately 200 posts, DO NOT POST HERE, but go to thread #30. This thread will be easier to handle if we keep it under 200. (faster loading) Please copy any notes or instructions to the new thread.
Thank you.

Feel free to add comments &/or suggestions... not just "challenges"

**There is also a Combiner's Group Information, FAQ & Discussion Thread #2 at:
http://www.librarything.com/topic/57164
That thread is for combining information, discussion in general, not for problems....

**The wiki page is here:

Not sure what to do in this case. I;ve been putting keywords into the work search function, sorting by title and looking for obvious works that need to be combined.

Came across this:

http://www.librarything.com/work/7638628

Please note the cover, the tags, the ISBNs and how it;s listed under editions.

It's obvious this work:

http://www.librarything.com/work/6024638

They came up side by side when I pulled up the keyword and they're listed under the Potential work combinations section.

What am I missing here?

edit: Just noticed Praxis17 did the title. I'll drop him or her a note about it. I was asking because the Canonial title doesn;t have a history button to pull up the record. Just noticed that CK has one as well instead.

I'd dismiss it as craziness, wipe the canonical title, and combine them as normal.

edited to add:
It might be someone doing some editing in catalogue view, and pasting into the wrong box. I don't think the series label matches the actual book, either.

Secret Slaves: Erotic Stories of Bondage is an anthology. One of the stories in it is 'Introducing Daniel', which is part of the series Praxis17 recorded in CK. Thus, the entry of the series was legitimate, but changing the canonical title was not. Sean Michael is only one of the authors in the volume. Rachel Kramer Bussel is one of the editors.

ETA: I've combined the works now.

Also (but not with first batch)

http://www.librarything.com/work/4848560

My copy of
http://www.librarything.com/work/3966522 does not seem to match those, but I wouldn't swear to the copy it combined with.

These are all old DMC pattern books, and DMC often published without dates or individual numbers for their pattern books so it is hard to tell. One member has one each of the first two sets, so I don't think it would be a good idea to combine them all together.

ETA I found some I could do, so I need to check the work numbers above. Edit complete.

Can someone get http://www.librarything.com/work/10555643 under Bellet, Alain? Unfortunately, there's currently twice as many Bellet as Alain Bellet, and Bellet is combined with Bell, E. T. which doesn't seem fixable any time soon.

75TineOliver
Oct 21, 2010, 6:28 am

74: I've had a look, but I can't see how/why 'Bellet' is combined with Bell, E. T. - if you go to the Bell, E. T. page (in an attempt to temporarily separate), there are no editions listed under that author at all, and the above work doesn't seem to appear on any of the other 'sub' author pages.

Hopefully someone with more separating experience will be able to solve this one - if some one does, can you please let me know how you did it? It's got me fascinated now!

For the moment, I've at least separated this work to a distinct author on the Bell page.

76r.orrison
Oct 21, 2010, 6:35 am

The way that LibraryThing makes an author page URL from an author's name is to strip out all punctuation and run the letters together. The author name Bellet ends up on the page /author/bellet, as does Bell, E.T. There is unfortunately no way to separate them.

Normally I'd just combine based on your advice, but the second of these, although the cover is almost identical, clearly shows the number '2' and thus appears to be a different work. All of the editions attached to the second also clearly show '2' in the title, so I'm not confident in combining them. If you can point me to something that shows that they are in fact the same thing, I (or someone else on this thread) will finish it off for you.

Ones a British hardcover with additional pages while the other is the American softcover with just the pages from the comic series.

Not quite the distinction-- but they are distinct. The ones I requested combined collect three different comic series: Shadows of the Empire, Mara Jade: By the Emperor's Hand, and Shadows of the Empire: Evolution. The other one just collects Shadows of the Empire. I'll add some disambig notices to keep this less confusing.

Oh, and can someone please combine:

msg 137, actually the majority of members have entered the book with that ISBN with no author. (American Quilter's Society is listed in WorldCat catalogue entries as an other author, but that doesn't help when LT ignores names in MARC 110 or 710 fields on entry). So unfortunately in this case the garbage Amazon entry wins out.

I will send a report to the Amazons about the bad information on their end. Wish we could do the same thing about the bad information picked up on LT's end.

edit: Probably should have left a note on it expalining the differences in ISBNs now that I think of it. Oh well....

I;pm going to be an ass here and say I don;t think the Password quilt one should be combined. I get a different subtitle.

I combined the ones with children's tags and wound up with this: http://www.librarything.com/work/1390649 The full title on that one is "A patch work quilt of favorite tales"

The ISBN on this one: http://www.librarything.com/work/5304285

leads me here: http://fatbrain.co.uk/product/default.aspx?isbn=9781556180613 and http://search.barnesandnoble.com/A-Patchwork-Quilt/Louise-E-Gray/p/9781556180613

The full title on that one is Patchwork Quilt : Life on a Virginia Farm, 1910-1920, it;s 216 pages and listed as a history book, not a children's one.

There's a copy listed on ebay but that's blocked from here.

I;m going to say no on that one.

No on the AIDS one as well:

http://www.librarything.com/work/5349088 - Photos of the panels

http://www.librarything.com/work/6495875 - Looking at the Editions page, that's either a program (ie flyer) of the project or a list of names. Nothing about photos.

edit: I'll finish 154 up.

And Finished. I found lots more of those Uncoverings and am trying to fix them before I;m out of time.

Someone has combined "Surely You're Joking Mr Feynman" with the omnibus containing it and "What do YOU Care what Other People Think". Oddly enough, they didn't combine the latter standalone into the mess while at it.

While your link is still showing the omnibus title, all the editions are of the single work "Surely You're Joking Mr Feynman", so that seems to have been sorted. The link without that specific edition number is showing correctly:

I personally prefer one post, but if you number your requests within the post. E.g:

Please combine:
1. Random Work
http:// link
http:// link

2. Different Random Work
http:// link
http:// link

That way, people are less likely to do them out of order and skip them, but also it means that one of us doesn't have to do your whole post and there's a clear way of saying where we've finished up to.

It would also be really helpful if once someone's indicated that they've done part of your request that you edit your post to say "Done". E.g:

1. Random Work
http:// link
http:// link

2. Different Random Work - Done
http:// link
http:// link

That way, it's a lot more obvious what has been combined and what hasn't without having to read every post in the thread.

ETA - Although I'm happy to hear if anyone has any objections to this, this is just my personal view.

Re: 197: Experience tells me that editing a post to provide additional data is confusing to some folks. I would rather have folks do what is comfortable to them to put in a request. I personally don;t have a problem with editing as I do my best to keep things straight. (Heck, I edit core files of many open source projects. As long as I keep notes, I'm fine.) If someone else would rather do up individual posts for each request, hey it's the thought that counts. They're taking the time and going out of their way to make LT better than it was before.
