Combining/Separating (Please Fix This Book!) Request Thread #30!!!

This topic is currently marked as "dormant"—the last message is more than 90 days old. You can revive it by posting a reply.

This thread is for LT'ers or thingamabrarians, or members, or their designees, to post combining or separating problems with their books.
**If a book has been combined with a book that is extremely different from the original.
**If a book won't combine with the other books just like it.
**There is a problem with the entry & it is just too overwhelming to deal with.
________________________________________...

It has been suggested many times that there be a single thread for LT'ers to post combining & separating problems so that;
** they can learn how to do it
** they can get help when needed
** just want someone else to do it (usually, they can't understand how to do it... which is normal... or don't have the time)
**and finally, those LT'ers who "enjoy" combining can have a place to look to first to see what fun can be had helping LT be the best place to catalog books.
________________________________________...

WHEN YOU POST:
Please give us HYPERLINKS or URLs, not touchstones. Hyperlinks to the pages where the problems exist are much more accurate than a touchstone when there is a problem.
Give us the title & author, plus any other information you think we might need.

Then you can just wait, "and someone will be with you shortly."

Suggestion from thread #29: If you have many works that need combining at once, please consider putting them into the same post with clear divisions between each set, for example:
Please combine:
1. Random Work
http:// link
http:// link

2. Different Random Work
http:// link
http:// link

That way, people are less likely to do them out of order and skip them, but also it means that one of us doesn't have to do your whole post and there's a clear way of saying where we've finished up to.

It would also be really helpful if once someone's indicated that they've done part of your request that you edit your post to say "Done".

Also, if you add new items to be combined, please indicate that they are new, for example by preceding them with "ETA:" or "Edit:".

Tim's Guidelines for Proper Etiquette for contacting members about their book records:

"For this topic, I still feel strongly that I'd like to consider it bad form. Many others agree with me. But a few thing I'm dictating and are angry about that. So, fine. Let's just write some guidelines up. I propose that the guidelines be something along the lines of:

*Remember that LibraryThing is used for many different reasons. The way you use and enjoy the site is not necessarily the way others do.
*Be sensitive to how the member is using LibraryThing. Approach members who show no interest in the social side more cautiously.
*Try to provide helpful information and ask questions rather than dictating.
*If the user indicates displeasure at the request, let it drop.
*When in doubt, raise the issue in the Combiners! group before sending a message."
________________________________________...

Skittles' note: I would like to add that we should ALWAYS use private comment when we absolutely must contact a LT'er, even when their response isn't private.

and yes, this thread is similar to putting all of our problems together for people to see & say, "oh, no!! LT isn't perfect!!" or "Look at all of the problems that LT has." That isn't the case here. This is a place to gather "challenges" together to make it easier & faster to "fix" them. Let's just remember that "bad" data comes from people... people who make mistakes.. WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES! (ok, there are a couple of perfect people around here) Instead of complaining about the problem, let's fix it.
________________________________________...

Dr Mike's (aka theapparatus) note:

If both works that need to be combine have more than 200 records, please post your request in this thread:

http://www.librarything.com/topic/95602

You need staff intervention to handle that request.

________________________________________...

When this thread reaches approximately 200 posts, DO NOT POST HERE, but go to thread #31. This thread will be easier to handle if we keep it under 200. (faster loading) Please copy any notes or instructions to the new thread.
Thank you.

Feel free to add comments &/or suggestions... not just "challenges"

**There is also a Combiner's Group Information, FAQ & Discussion Thread #2 at:
http://www.librarything.com/topic/57164
That thread is for combining information, discussion in general, not for problems....

**The wiki page is here:

2> Well, that was a fun google search to forget the quote marks on. (Even with the quote marks...oy.)

I'm thinking #695357 and 2797967 should be combined. 4659841 is questionable - it looks like at least one separation needs to be made (the ISBN0394727967) IF it's a separate book, and it's possible that Dick Wirth did write a book that is just "Ballooning" and not a collaboration with Jerry Young. But I don't know for sure, and I'm not sure where to look. Amazon thinks that they're the same, but Worth has done several books about ballooning, it seems.

That's why I asked for a second opinion. :)

Because all you got were porn hits, too? People need to think about Google when naming their kids, really! (Time machines will be provided at some point in the future to rectify pre-google mistakes.)

don't know if this is really a combining issue, but the second description being pulled from Amazon for The Deathly Hallows Lectures is actually for a book about CS Lewis.

you can see it here.

6> Doesn't look like a combining thing. Someone entered the book with the CS Lewis ISBN (or close to it - when I copypasted the one different ISBN, amazon told me I was making things up). Nothing to be done about it.

Also, duh, I thought I caught all the edits. The OP is fixed.

#2 and 3

Just checked OCLC and the book has a subtitle if published by Random House (both 1980 and 1991 with the isbns 039451338x, 0394727967 and 0679731164) and no subtitle if by Orbis in London (1980 and 1984, 0856133094 and 0856137634) - cannot find an isbn with 0517117525.

Pagination is the same in all editions and Jerry Young is photographer in all, introduction by Dick Francis, editor, Graeme Ewens but he is not mentioned in every record. I am leaning toward combining them as I think they are the same text.

This is a graphic adaptation of the novel The Stars My Destination. It should not be combined with the novel itself.

There's also a bunch of copies of Alfred Bester's the Stars My Destination. Vol 1: The Graphic Story Adaptation published under ISBN 0894370537. I haven't separated those out yet. A combiner with some time on their hands might want to do it.

If so, it should not be combined with The Complete Alfred Bester's The Stars My Destination : The Graphic Story Adaptation as Volume 1 was only the first half. Volume 2 was never published. Instead decades later they published the complete thing as a single book.

Concerning Nicholas Evans there are several writers.
http://www.librarything.nl/author/evansnicholas

I found writer Nicholas Evans (2) on: http://asiapacific.anu.edu.au/people/personal/evann_ling.php
and on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicholas_Evans_(linguist)

At the Australian University he intrduces himself as Nick Evans.
I advise to change the name of Nicholas Evans (2) into Nicholas (Nick) Evans - Linguist

Edited: Nov 3, 2010, 2:22 pm

36:
Only one person has that work in their catalog, and only they can change the author's name that they have entered. If you can identify a work that is on Nicholas Evans' page that the work should be combined with, then it might disappear from N Evans' page.

Concerning Nicholas Evans there are several writers.
http://www.librarything.nl/author/evansnicholas

I found out that writer Nicholas Evans (3) also uses the name Nick Evans but he's an orthopaedic surgeon http://www.drnickevans.com/Profile.html
His work is: http://www.librarything.nl/work/3073236

I suggest to use the next name for him Nicholas (Nick) Evans MD, FRCS (Orth)

Hallo, isn't it possible to ad the book with the right name and combine the work and remove that book after the combination?

41r.orrison
Nov 3, 2010, 2:38 pm

40:
It's possible, and sometimes that works, but once you delete the copy you've added, and the only copy remaining is listed with "N Evans", it will probably go back to "N Evans".

37/39:
Are you suggesting that people who own those books change their catalogs? They probably aren't reading this, and there's nothing that we can do. Different authors with the same name can't just be given different names. The best place to put information like that is in the disambiguation notice on the authors' page. See, for example, http://www.librarything.com/author/robinsonpaul

I think this would be a split?

This book:

http://www.librarything.com/work/3116197/book/66384048

.. is the recently-published Foundation trilogy from Everyman's Library. It consists only of the trilogy (Foundation, Foundation and Empire, and Second Foundation).

For some reason it is bound to a larger omnibus which includes additional stories unrelated to Foundation. The work listed is "The Foundation Trilogy: Foundation, Foundation and Empire; Second Foundation - The Stars, Like Dust, The Naked Sun, I Ro"

43> Got it!
I also got it into the right work. Normally separating is easy, as you do it on the editions page of the work, but on these big ones can be a hassle to find the right line.

51, 52,

http://www.librarything.com/author/greyantony&norefer=1

I reseparated and took the canonical names out. I think they probably should be recombined, but that doesn't seem possible at the moment. There does seem to be only one author with this name, so combining in the legal name would be OK. The problem was that your book had been entered with the legal name rather than the pen name.

Alternately, you could change the author in your catalogue to read Grey, Anthony. Then the work would (at least in a day or two) move to that page, leaving the Wright, AEG page empty.

Winter Song by William Shakespeare (a picture book by Melanie Hall illustrating the poem from Love's Labour Lost) ISBN 1590782755

Seems inextricably entangled with The Winter's Tale (right author, wrong play). http://www.librarything.com/work/31219 Winter's Tale

Yesterday I tracked down the ISBN in the list of editions and separated it out giving http://www.librarything.com/work/10611596 Winter Song

But it seems to be still connected on some deep level because my copy of Winter Song did not separate out. I have tried adding it by requesting to add it from the Winter Song screen and clicking on OverCat. I have tried to add it manually. I deleted all the bad results, let it sit overnight, and tried again. But all I get is http://www.librarything.com/work/31219/book/66458836

Note the results from the search for Winter Song include the picture book with 8 libraries as well as "matched on A Winter's Tale" with 1600ish libraries. This is at least an improvement from yesterday; the database is updated. Not perfectly. But it lets you find the work, which was not the case 24 hours ago. (search results - http://www.librarything.com/search_works.php?q=winter+song&Search=Search)

Please help. Or tell me what I am doing wrong so I can fix it. Thank you.

66r.orrison

When I search your catalog for Winter Song I get
http://www.librarything.com/catalog/muumi&deepsearch=winter+song
which links to the right work:
http://www.librarything.com/work/10611596/book/66458836
which is good, but doesn't explain why your name doesn't appear in the members list for the work
That could be related to this bug http://www.librarything.com/topic/101647

The work/book link in your post is stale, that book is no longer connected to that work. Clicking the link will do something, but not the right thing. Try this link, with just your book number:
http://www.librarything.com/work/book/66458836 to see that it really is connected to the right work.

Hello! Usually the book Raffles: The Amateur Cracksman by E. W. Hornung contains the following stories,

The Ides of March

A Costume Piece

Gentlemen and Players

Le Premier Pass

Wilful Murder

Nine Points of the Law

The Return Match

The Gift of the Emperor

But my Wordsworth Classics edition of the same name contains two books. Raffles: The Amateur Cracksman and The Black Mask (published in some countries as Raffles: Further Adventures of the Amateur Cracksman). My book contains the following stories,

The Ides of March

A Costume Piece

Gentlemen and Players

Le Premier Pass

Wilful Murder

Nine Points of the Law

The Return Match

The Gift of the Emperor

No Sinecure

A Jubilee Present

The Fate of Faustina

The Last Laugh

To Catch a Thief

An Old Flame

The Wrong House

The Knees of the Gods

Shouldn’t the editions containing both Raffles: The Amateur Cracksman and The Black Mask be separated from the editions containing only Raffles: The Amateur Cracksman?

Also, there maybe other editions of the book that contain entirely different stories altogether. It is all very confusing for me. Can someone please sort this out? I’d be really grateful!

The link to Raffles: The Amateur Cracksman is here,

http://www.librarything.com/work/book/62336208

Thank you in advance!

68: Done
67: Not done. From the editions list, http://www.librarything.com/work/48979/editions it's pretty much impossible to tell what should be separated out. Presumably the single Wordsworth Classic edition, but how about all the other with the same ISBN 1853260940 that don't claim to be the Wordsworth Classic edition, at least in their title. I would suggest that, at the very least, you edit the title of your book to show what it does actually contain.

Sorry supersidvicious, your requests are a lot of work, so I skipped most of them. If I have some time again, I'll do more. To be very honest, these big requests take quite a bit of time, and maybe that's why they stay up for so long. If you want them done quicker and you don't know how to do it yourself, I'd be happy to tell you how.

>85 supersidvicious:
I think there are more ways to combine, but this is how I know to do it:

- You want to combine work A and B, where B does not have an author
- Copy the title of work B
- Manually add this to your catalogue
- Change the author to that of work A
- It helps to also change the title a bit (I add a period or slash to the end)
- Then book A will be under potential work combinations on the editions page or...
- You go to the author page and combine work A and B there
- Then you delete the work from your catalogue again

- If book B has an author, you do the same, but include that author in the manual add.

I hope this is clear, otherwise, I'll try to explain more. Good luck!

http://www.librarything.com/work/134738 is a merger of both the personal memoir of Ulysses S. Grant, and the Library of America volume with the memoir and the letters from him. It either needs separating out, or who ever did it needs to fix the disambiguation notice; if you're going to ignore a disambig notice, it should be your job to fix the CK so it doesn't have a misleading disambig notice on it.

I can't figure out how to fix this.

3 of the Miss Seeton mysteries were published as by Hampton Charles (NOT Charles Hampton), a pen name for Roy Peter Martin, who also used the pen name James Melville for the Inspector Otani novels.

The bulk of the copies (the English language ones) of those 3 Miss Seeton books are listed under Charles Hampton. I assume that someone named Charles Hampton is/was in fact the author of the other book showing on his page.

92tjsjohanna
Nov 15, 2010, 11:27 pm

Unfortunately the bulk of the Miss Seeton mysteries were entered with the author name of Charles Hampton. I've added a disambiguation and split the author, but short of trying to float all the works over to Hampton Charles, there's no way to have the books show up on the right author page (at least that I know of).

Pearl/The Pearl , the anonymous middle English poem, needs some combining work - it looks pretty easy, but it's long enough since I've done serious combining that I'm terrified of messing with a classic anon work. :D

http://www.librarything.com/work/2933199
http://www.librarything.com/work/186366
-->these two are both the medieval poem, each with various translators' versions combined.

Individual editions that are off by themselves and should be added to the bucket:
http://www.librarything.com/work/2650006
http://www.librarything.com/work/3662269
http://www.librarything.com/work/10395179
http://www.librarything.com/work/6377029

The above six works should *not* be combined with the rest of the Anonymous "The Pearl"s, which are a completely different book, and the disambiguation notice on http://www.librarything.com/work/2933199 should be preserved.

That work is listed in http://www.librarything.com/author/jeffreycalfier

The authors gives messages that they can't be combined because there are no books for them.

Did you just enter the two problems? It looks to me like you entered them, then edited the author's names, and the database is halfway from using the 0 edition authors they were first entered as, to using the right one. This may clear itself up in another day or two.

>138 dchaikin: Maybe one of the combiners with more tricks up their sleaves can combine those authors.

>137 flemmily: The work author is decided by 'vote' of those owning it. We can't 'fix' the information in other members' catalogues. (Thank goodness for that!) 'Incorrect' or not, I can see why someone might prefer to have this listed with the author of the book it is about.

Sometimes if the numbers are close extra copies can be added that will 'float' the work over to a different author. If the problem is Amazon, you can ask Amazon to correct their listing (if you have an account with them); that might help future copies to be correct. But for 'Notes on ...' I think you will find that many people will prefer the more useful author to the more correct one.

What if you want to separate a work, are unsure who combined it or how to find out for that matter and don't want to anger anyone in the process?

At some point, the work page for The Starfarers Quartet LTER ebook omnibus (added to my library when awarded by LTER) was combined with Starfarers, the first novel in the series (not in my library). This situation is messing up my recommendations because when I recommend The Starfarers Quartet LT shows that it's not in my library. My next question, can you have a work page for an omnibus edition that is digital and not paper? And finally, what about the review I wrote for LTER - if I delete the omnibus work and add the work it was combined with will my review "still be there?"

If someone has done a batch upload of thousands of books, dropping all the author surnames, I'd give them a pretty low priority in combining terms. That seems to be what happened to http://www.librarything.com/catalog/grammartroll/yourlibrary . Laboriously hand-fixing maybe 5000 records, when the user will presumably re-upload their library if they actually want to use it, seems a bit of a misdirected effort to me.

And how does someone manage to enter 5,000 books on a free account? Is it some quirk of uploading from a file?

151jjwilson61
Edited: Nov 22, 2010, 12:22 pm

142> leahsimone, you've managed to confuse me. Your book is the Starfarers Quartet and not just the first book Starfarers, yet your review seems to be about just Starfarers and not rest of the quartet. So which is it? Do you have the omnibus or just the first one?

ETA: Also, the work page shows only one person as having the work (who isn't leahsimone) and it has five member reviews. Is this a case where the system needs to catch up to the combining work?

>151 jjwilson61: jjwilson61 - sorry! I received the quartet as an ebook from LTER but have only read the first novel. I am midway through the second and will update my review as I complete each novel. I was concerned about getting a review posted as I have another ER book to review and a couple I have requested. I will make a note at the beginning of the review to clarify.

Anyway, I wanted to add them as individual novels but the entry from LTER was the quartet as an omnibus. Since there is no true omnibus edition, (doesn't seem to have it's own ISBN so maybe that's why it was combined with the first novel?) I would prefer to add each book to my library. My concern is deleting the omnibus entry and adding the individual books will mess up my LTER standing. In other words, I don't know how it's being counted for LTER. Does that make sense? I attempted to email Tim but have not gotten a response. Who else should I ask?

Update: On my ER page it's showing that I haven't added the book but that I have reviewed it. I added the entry for the first book and posted my review there as well. I will have to contact Sonya Green I guess. My ER page is now showing that I haven't added the omnibus - but I have added both now! This is a mess.

Looks like someone combined Persepolis: The Story of a Return (Parts 3 and 4, published as Persepolis 2 in the U.S.) with Persepolis 2, as in the second part of Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood, into one work:

http://www.librarything.com/work/7037

The copy I read is Persepolis: The Story of a Return. I'm afraid I don't have the time to try to separate this properly now, but I can try to help out later this evening.

153> The book in your catalog that has the review has to be combined with the work that is marked as ER. So, you have to catalog the omnibus as a unit in your catalog to get credit for the review.

What you could do is add the omnibus to a collection that you create just for this purpose that you then deactivate (and also remove the book from any other collection). Then you could add the individual works to your main collection.

>155 jjwilson61: Apparently, I cannot find the work that is marked as ER anymore. When I click the link in my 'Books You've Won' page it goes nowhere. Despite the fact that I have added both the omnibus (this was originally the work marked as ER that I added as soon as I got the snag notification) and the first novel in the series, my 'Books You've Won' page still shows I have not added what was awarded to me. Sonya Green apparently no longer works for LT so I have emailed Abby.

What you could do is add the omnibus to a collection that you create just for this purpose that you then deactivate (and also remove the book from any other collection). Then you could add the individual works to your main collection.

Assuming I can actually locate the ER marked work this sounds like an interesting solution. I will have to test that. Thanks.

Just wondering... can anything be done about combining all the Elizabeth Jane Coatsworth books onto the one page?

I've manually added the bottom one several times and then edited to add the author, but it does not change that work number to match the other.

Could someone else try it?

Is it possible to combine the writers Kathleen O'Neal Gear and W. Michael Gear with W. Michael Kathleen O'Neal; Gear Gear

When you look at p.e. the serie: The First North Americans you can see that the write the books together. Sometimes only Kathleen her name is on the book and sometine only W. Michael his name is on the book. But mostly both names are on the books.

The single authors shouldn't be combined with their dual persona because they both have written books independent of each other.

But what about all the books they have written together, all those books have a different work nr. while they are written by both of them and they are added under the two separated writers

It's just not an area that LT handles well. The author field is for single authors only and when people try to shoehorn multiple authors into it it just isn't pretty.

>164 guurtjesboekenkast:-167: There are quite a bit of works that are on two or even three of the author pages, I'll combine them together. That is of course no solution, but at least all works that belong together will be together.
