This thread is for LT’ers or thingamabrarians, or members, or their designees, to post combining or separating problems with their books.
** If a book has been combined with a book that is extremely different from the original.
** If a book won’t combine with the other books just like it.
** There is a problem with the entry & it is just too overwhelming to deal with.
________________________________________
It has been suggested many times that there be a single thread for LT’ers to post combining & separating problems so that:
** they can learn how to do it
** they can get help when needed
** just want someone else to do it (usually, they can’t understand how to do it ... which is normal ... or don’t have the time)
** and, finally, those LT’ers who “enjoy” combining can have a place to look to first to see what fun can be had helping LT be the best place to catalog books.
________________________________________
WHEN YOU POST:
Please give us HYPERLINKS or URLs, not touchstones. Hyperlinks to the pages where the problems exist are much more accurate than a touchstone when there is a problem.
Give us the title & author, plus any other information you think we might need.
Then you can just wait, “and someone will be with you shortly.”
Suggestion from thread #29: If you have many works that need combining at once, please consider putting them into the same post with clear divisions between each set, for example:
Please combine:
1. Random Work
http:// link
http:// link
2. Different Random Work
http:// link
http:// link
That way, people are less likely to do them out of order and skip them, but also it means that one of us doesn’t have to do your whole post and there’s a clear way of saying where we’ve finished up to.
It would also be really helpful if once someone’s indicated that they’ve done part of your request that you edit your post to say “Done”.
Also, if you add new items to be combined, please indicate that they are new, for example by preceding them with “ETA:” or “Edit:”.

Tim’s Guidelines for Proper Etiquette for contacting members about their book records:
“For this topic, I still feel strongly that I’d like to consider it bad form. Many others agree with me. But a few think I’m dictating and are angry about that. So, fine. Let’s just write some guidelines up. I propose that the guidelines be something along the lines of:
* Remember that LibraryThing is used for many different reasons. The way you use and enjoy the site is not necessarily the way others do.
* Be sensitive to how the member is using LibraryThing. Approach members who show no interest in the social side more cautiously.
* Try to provide helpful information and ask questions rather than dictating.
*If the user indicates displeasure at the request, let it drop.
* When in doubt, raise the issue in the Combiners! group before sending a message.”
________________________________________
Skittles’ note: I would like to add that we should ALWAYS use private comment when we absolutely must contact a LT’er, even when their response isn’t private.
And, yes, this thread is similar to putting all of our problems together for people to see & say, “Oh, no!! LT isn’t perfect!!” or “Look at all of the problems that LT has.” That isn’t the case here. This is a place to gather “challenges” together to make it easier & faster to “fix” them. Let’s just remember that “bad” data comes from people ... people who make mistakes ... . WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES! (OK, there are a couple of perfect people around here.) Instead of complaining about the problem, let’s fix it.

Dr Mike’s (aka theapparatus) note:
If both works that need to be combine have more than 200 records, please post your request in this thread:
http://www.librarything.com/topic/95602
You need staff intervention to handle that request.
________________________________________
When this thread reaches approximately 200 posts, DO NOT POST HERE, but go to thread #37. This thread will be easier to handle if we keep it under 200 (faster loading). Please copy any notes or instructions to the new thread. Thank you.
Feel free to add comments &/or suggestions ... not just “challenges.”
** There is also a Combiner’s Group Information, FAQ & Discussion Thread #2 at:
http://www.librarything.com/topic/57164 .
That thread is for combining information, discussion in general, not for problems ... .
** The wiki page is here:

Many of the combination requests I made in this thread haven't been done yet. Doing a page search for my username should work. Most of these involve zero copies. I've edited the ones that have already been done.
If you're going to work on some of these, please let us know on that thread or this one (perhaps two people could work in opposite directions), and especially let us know which ones are done, so I can edit the posts in question. Thank you!
edit: Everything combined, thanks to all who helped!

I did a bit of work on Moby Dick, mainly combining a bunch of stray NCEs that were floating around on their lonesome. I also separated out an NCE that had gotten combined into the main Moby Dick work. While I was there, I noticed a bunch of works are combined into the non-NCE work with names like "Illustrated Classics". I also noted there seem to be a lot of questionable works like Collins Classics - Moby Dick or Moby-Dick or, The Whale (Penguin Classics) that may or may not be abridgments.
One thing they don't have are disambiguation notices like I've seen people have been helpful enough to put on ones they've identified as abridgments. So these could either be combined in if appropriate, or they could get DNs to ward off future questions. Work-to-work relationships showing they are abridgments/adaptations would also be cool, though I admit not to noticing those as much as DNs (really wish Tim would implement the RSI to have those relationships appear as an automatic DN).
Anyway, just thought someone who might want some monotonous CDO-appeasing work might want to check these out.

4> I would expect a penguin classic edition to be pretty much a definitive text with the addition of a short scholarly introduction I am not sure why this has been separated.
give me a reason or I will roll it back in.

5> No, I think that's fine. I just kept running across versions that seemed otherwise okay but then would have a DN note meaning someone had actually checked it out and it was an abridgment. I figured if I wasn't going to do that kind of legwork, I should post it for someone else who was willing.

Bambi appears to be needing a looking to:
http://www.librarything.com/work/107481/
I think this because of this review stating that they're reviewing the movie:

But if you look at the D. Notice, this isn't the record for the movie.
Lots of different covers in there as well.

Okay, time to crack down on 0-copy works now that we can combine them again. I'm doing what I can with the Nancy Drews, but some... I'm not understand why the 0-copy editions are not showing up as potential combinations on the main work pages... What's weird is, for example, the 0-copy edition of "The Mystery at the Ski Jump" will show up as a potential combination on *other* Nancy Drew works, but not on the main work for The Mystery at the Ski Jump!
So yes. I'm getting frustrated with it, so if anyone could help me out...

27: If you can figure out, or have the time to figure out, exactly which ones are revised and should be separated, be my guest. Some (like the Brass-Bound Trunk one) are already separated. However, I see no logical way to pick through each and every work trying to separate the revisions. Many (sometimes most) of the editions have no ISBN, or say revision when the ISBN is for the original, etc etc. I just don't see any good way to go about it.
In the meantime, I see no reason not to combine 0-copy works with the main work, when the ISBNs are both originals.

Don't ask me how I got started on this, but somehow I caught myself trying to figure out all the different "University Physics" books. Some list volume 1 and volume 2 (Plus we have a zero copy volume 3 floating around) as well as study guides and such. Too much for me to poke at right now.

Plus, authors cross so the search link is easier than the work link.

Did you combine requests 11 and 12 together? They're both abridged audiobooks, but I kept them separate because one is part of a series and the other is not.
Perhaps it should be a publisher series, I'm not sure. I made it because Hachette is publishing them all in this form, and my separating had exiled them from the original Campion series.
Are there rules for this?

36> I may have inadvertently combined your requests 11 and 12, but I've re-separated them on the theory that I don't know whether they're the same. If so, they probably should be combined; otherwise, unless somebody points us to a practice or standards that says "any abridgment should be combined with all other abridgments of the same work," I'm all for making (or preserving) distinctions if there's any doubt. Question: Is it possible to alias two divisions to each other?
Roberta Hunt (2) = Robert Hunt (6)
actually Robert A. Hunt.

43> Why wouldn't we alias both "Roberta Hunt (2)" and "Robert Hunt (6)" into the applicable "Robert Hunt" division? Maybe I don't fully understand the "finer points of aliasing" yet -- more likely than not; but here's how (I think) I'd approach it: (1) identify the desired "top-level author," in this case the "Robert Hunt" disambiguation; (2) alias each division to that generic author, if it's not already there; and (3) re-assign the specific works attributed to each aliased author to the applicable division of "Robert Hunt." Am I close? If not, somebody stop me before I alias again! (Or, maybe gently point us in the direction of aliasing guidance that we may need to remember.) Thanks!

I've been futzing with this most of the day and my eyes are starting to cross.
http://www.librarything.com/series/Battles+and+Leaders+of+the+Civil+War
Its a four volume and eight volume set. I've added DN to a few, but they should all be in the series for combination purposes. Be sure to check the volumes to make sure that the volumes aren't crossed when combined. Someone might have dumped a first volume into teh four set or vice versa. Anyone wishing to jump into it, be my guest.
I'll start work on the photographic history later. That is a five and ten volume set, also going series. *sigh* all mixed up like the other.

# 48 done, found some extra copies too.
# 49 3>part 1: done, did a search on "dylan dog" and found a lot of copies, added some to the series but left most of them alone since I don't speak Italian and there seem to be several dylan dog-series. I trusted the numbers on the series page and combined those.
#49 2>thread # 34, did most of message 65
questions:
1. What does "ETA" mean in a message? Since I don't know, I didn't combine the works mentioned under ETA with the others.
2. I still see several radio theatre/radio collection copies combined with the Silver Chair-novel. 235711: I trust you will separate them and post the desired combinations here.
3. #36 seem to be two very different books, so these are not combined.

1. "ETA" means "edited to add". This was in case someone would start combining as soon as I posted the original message. As long as it's under the same number, they can be safely combined (unless someone else miscombined something in the meantime).
2. I did a lot of separating back then, and found some copies that were clearly meant to be books, only with the wrong ISBNs. So that might explain it.
I have to go now, will look at the rest later.

Is there any way to further improve the author "-Author-"?
http://www.librarything.com/author/author&all=1
The max number of splits (40) has been used, and they can't be reused because of aliasing?
Right now, I'm combining aliased items to their proper works. This removes items off the -author- page.
Am I then able to reuse those split numbers then?
ETA. Should I go back in to authors names and separate out -Author- names (after works have been combined out into the main name leaving e.g. author-20 with no works and therefore be reusable for the -Author- page splits)?

Excuse my ignorance and/or if I've posted t his in the wrong place.
There's a misplaced author picture and I'm not sure how to reassign it. I could perhaps fake my way through but I'm afraid of accidentally deleting the pic.

#36 seem to be two very different books, so these are not combined.
So they are. I swear I never saw that Chinese dragon book before in my life. Made a note. I'm going to look if there's any other Caspians left to combine instead. edit: Found a zero copy among the suggestions and combined it; also a BBC version.
Changed the last book of #33, which was a single Magician's Nephew but had become the omnibus after someone miscombined it. It's back to being a Magician's Nephew now.

Dear Combiners/Separaters
I've recently purchased and added some books by Peter V. Brett http://www.librarything.com/author/brettpeterv-1 but looking at his pages he seemes to have had a number of Peter Brett's combined into him http://www.librarything.com/author/brettpeterv . I'm not too sure if this affects this but I notice that Peter V. Brett has had his canonical name set to Peter Brett. Is it possible for you to work your magic and separate out the Peter Brett's to leave the Peter V. Brett?
Regards
Dave

Separate. Because the individual volumes of the 3-, 9- and 14- volume sets also show up. These need to be in separate series, together with the combined set they belong to.
I also see some individual volumes among the editions of the combined sets.
A lot of work indeed. You will also need a lot of disambiguation notices to distinguish the various sets.

Hi sturlington and welcome to this group.
Yes, this is the group to ask for the combination of works that belong together. A lot can be done by yourself, by clicking on the "editions" of the work. Often the desired combinations show up and can easily be combined. If this doesn't work, or the combinations don't show up, you are more than welcome to post here.
In this case, there is also a matter of "too much love". This is the case when more than 200 copies are involved: in the past this led to overcombining and consequently a lot of work in separating the works again. The message you get when trying to combine the two works in your request is:
"Sorry, too much love! Because of a number of massive over-combinations (eg., every book by C. S. Lewis combined into one) combinations that change more than 200 books have been disabled, except for LibraryThing staff, until we work out some rules.
We're discussing the issue on this thread. Tell us your opinion, and what you were trying to combine.
You were attempting to combine: 10264784, 10812390."
So, you will have to post your request in the thread: http://www.librarything.com/topic/94262

I am a little confused, so forgive me. I previously suggested these two copies of Wastelands be combined:
http://www.librarything.com/work/10264784
Ok, now they have the same URL, which is really weird. One of them has the author as John Joseph Adams (who is the editor), one has the author as Stephen King (who contributed a story). The first is listed as being in my library, the second is not. I'm convinced they are the same book. What could be happening?
Here is the link to the copy in my library, if that helps:

@sturlington, Take a look at the editions page:
http://www.librarything.com/work/10264784/editions
343 people think Steven King did the work. There's not enough other people who have the work as being by John Adams.
It's a common issue and has been discussed before. Only thing you can do is leave a comment to all of the members who have the book, explain how you see the issue and ask them to make the change.
Good luck with that. I went through the same thing with a cover on one of the RPG books I have indexed. :)
edit: Amazon has it right if you want to have something to point people at: http://www.amazon.com/Wastelands-Apocalypse-John-Joseph-Adams/dp/1597801054

Ok, thanks for explaining. I don't think it's worth the bother. The truth is, the only reason I noticed is the Stephen King version was showing up in my recommendations. So I'll just click No thanks! and pretend it isn't there.
The funny thing is, even though I collect Stephen King, I bought that book because it has a story by Octavia Butler that's hard to find somewhere else. So in my opinion, the author should be Butler.
(Not really.)

But you're not allowed to say that another users's data is wrong. Perhaps the King story is the only in that collection that they care about and they want the book to sort with the rest of the Kings when they sort their library. Not right according to your standards but each users data is sacred on LT.
109sturlington
>108 jjwilson61: Is that addressed to me? I think #106 and I were both agreeing it would be silly to try to change the minds of 300+ people, and it's not at all important to me. I was wondering why that version wasn't showing up as being in my library, and theapparatus kindly explained it to me.
Honestly, I'm not trying to step on toes or tell people what to do with their data when I post in these forums; I'm just trying to understand LT better.

I actually wrote 108 simultaneously w/ your 107.

>110 jjwilson61: Oh, ok, I guess the thought of writing more than 300 people to ask them to change something on their database was so ridiculous that it had to be a joke. As in, you could do this, but no one in their right mind would.
Although I knew that we could edit the author fields on our books, I had no idea what effect that would have on the larger database. The way this site works is pretty darn fascinating.

I was mostly trying to explain why someone might consider King the "author" of that work instead of the editor, but it looks like you already thought of that explanation.

>117 Gizmex:: I'm not sure which "other work" you were looking for, but I don't think you did anything wrong. WorldCat reports that Jutro możesz zniknąć is the Polish translation of Gone Tomorrow ( http://www.worldcat.org/title/jutro-mozesz-zniknac/oclc/708376766 ), so I'll combine those two. As for why the Polish translation wasn't showing up on the Lee Child author page, I'm not sure I know -- that seems pretty esoteric LT to me; it may fall under the general catch-all explanation of "caching." I just hope I'm not messing up somebody else's "diagnostic analysis" of a problem.

117/118 When you have changed an author, it doesn't automatically change the work - if the work needs to change you can hit recalculate title/author. I did and now the work is on the author page.
I've now combined it and a few other odd copies with the main work of Gone Tomorrow.

Combiners! Question:
I've seen a couple of this today (at least), and I'm NOT YET combining, so others might see it too -- one LT work (here, it happens to be http://www.librarything.com/work/8038308 ) appears on the Editions page of another LT work ( http://www.librarything.com/work/382468/editions ), but doesn't show up when I move from the Editions Page to Combine/Separate Potentials. I've also recalculated title/author and cover, to no apparent effect.
I'll also post this to Bug Collectors ( http://www.librarything.com/topic/116208#2696494 ), or maybe somebody can point me to an existing, apropos discussion thread. Any comment, thought, suggestion or insight is appreciated. Thank you!
ETA: >120 marq:: Done. And, marq, you need to quit showing me such fantastic stuff, or you're gonna bust our budget! :o) (As long as it's somebody else's fault ... right?)

I'm almost 100% certain these 2 Necronomicons should be combined:
http://www.librarything.com/work/2933844
http://www.librarything.com/work/11209178
They have the same ISBN and, oddly, the exact same disambiguation notice.

>122 DemetriosX:: I combined, the doubted the combination and (I think) re-separated these two, largely because of the disambiguation: "Do not combine with other books titled Necronomicon. All books titled Necronomicon refer to the book H.P. Lovecraft invented as a literary device in his fictional world. Each one is unique. There is no definitive Necronomicon, nor is there a "real" Necronomicon." (Emphasis added.)
In my experience of the wide variety of LT cataloging practices, ISBN -- in and of itself -- seems among the least reliable data field to base combinations on, particularly for these works where each edition may be distinctive and even "authorship" may be an unreliable attribute.
I suspect we need someone with greater familiarity, maybe even copies of each edition or variant, to help with appropriate separations and divisions of:

http://www.librarything.com/work/2933844 ;

http://www.librarything.com/work/8981988 ; and
any other Necronomicon entries on LT.

>123 jasbro:: I hesitated even suggesting the combination, based on the DN. But on top of the ISBNs, even the covers are the same. I suspect there's some bad data somewhere giving HPL author credit. Looking at the Amazon description for the apparently errant works, I think that, while they should be credited to Simon as author, they possibly shouldn't be combined with the other version. This seems to be a revised hardcover edition.
130jasbro
>128 DemetriosX:: I think you and I both may be struggling with similar limitations (and frustrations?) here, namely too little familiarity with the variant editions to determine which should be separated or combined as distinct works. To my mind, covers are NOT persuasive, primarily because -- unless explicitly chosen -- they automatically follow "best guess" matching based on ISBN. No doubt there's also ratty data here (e.g., Lovecraft, Simon and "Abdul Alhazred" each show up as "authors" of one or another text, sometimes with the same ISBN). That, together the DNs, leaves me wondering what (if any) reliable information we really have here, and what basis there is for combinations/separations. Unless we were to do "maximum separation" of all entries by ISBN, and then separate all entries with no ISBN by author and title variants, my preference is to leave well enough alone until somebody with greater familiarity with (even one!) version can lend a hand. But I would also respect the judgment of other LT members on this point. Thanks for your help!

They have different publishers. Just different ways of handling the numeration of title page etc is enough to explain most of the discrepency. Add in another couple of pages of 'I'm really glad this is now becoming available to another section of the world...'

This book: http://www.librarything.com/work/70849 has a disambiguation notice saying not to combine the "book and records" with the regular book, but it seems that they are indeed combined. To seperate or keep combined?
161bookel
I've seen many where 'book and tape' or 'book and record' have been combined with the book alone, and I don't care if they are combined as it is just an alternate edition of the book (the tape is just word for word of the book text usually, like those see, hear, read picture books). If it is just an alternate edition, same complete text as in the book, why have it separate? Also, I have several where I don't have the cassette tape, even though that edition says it is supposed to have it (but I found them secondhand without). I would combine them, personally. It is just an alternate "edition".
162europhile
very few of them mention the record so i think i would combine them with the book only ones

Actually, that module isn't set in Zelazny's Amber universe, but in Clark Ashton Smith's Averoigne, the cover likely being a rendition of The Colossus of Ylourgne :)

I went looking at the Ologies series, and found a lot of strays. Can someone please combine the following?
vampireology

spyology

http://www.librarything.com/work/9660390
http://www.librarything.com/work/9660357
Also, is Pirateology: Pirate Hunters Companion and Pirateology: The sea journal of Captain Lubbers the same book (it appears to be different titles under US and UK publishing, but I'm not sure)? If so, these can be combined, if not, then the main Pirateology book needs to be gone thru.

I guess my sleep-addled brain didn't write clearly. I didn't mean for the Pirateology Handbook to be combined with the Pirate Hunters Companion / Sea Journal. I meant to ask if the Companion and the Sea Journal were the same. The strays I identified were combined into the larger work, which already had both titles, so I'll leave that be. But the Handbook strays still need to be combined into that larger work.

#195 If I look at Worldcat, it gives the titlepage title as:
Pirateology : the sea journal of Captain William Lubber
and the cover subtitle as:
"A Pirate hunter's companion"
Since I do not have the copies at hand, I am guessing on this but I think they may be the same. My grandson has all the pirateology books (I think) and I do not have a title with sea journal on my master list.
Edited to add: both titles in Worldcat include this isbn: 0763631434; 9780763631437
and for clarity - there is more than one record in WorldCat and the subtitles varies in the last one, held by one library
