This thread is for LT’ers or thingamabrarians, or members, or their designees, to post combining or separating problems with their books.
** If a book has been combined with a book that is extremely different from the original.
** If a book won’t combine with the other books just like it.
** There is a problem with the entry & it is just too overwhelming to deal with.
________________________________________
It has been suggested many times that there be a single thread for LT’ers to post combining & separating problems so that:
** they can learn how to do it
** they can get help when needed
** just want someone else to do it (usually, they can’t understand how to do it ... which is normal ... or don’t have the time)
** and, finally, those LT’ers who “enjoy” combining can have a place to look to first to see what fun can be had helping LT be the best place to catalog books.
________________________________________
WHEN YOU POST:
Please give us HYPERLINKS or URLs, not touchstones. Hyperlinks to the pages where the problems exist are much more accurate than a touchstone when there is a problem.
Give us the title & author, plus any other information you think we might need.
Then you can just wait, “and someone will be with you shortly.”
Suggestion from thread #29: If you have many works that need combining at once, please consider putting them into the same post with clear divisions between each set, for example:
Please combine:
1. Random Work
http:// link
http:// link
2. Different Random Work
http:// link
http:// link
That way, people are less likely to do them out of order and skip them, but also it means that one of us doesn’t have to do your whole post and there’s a clear way of saying where we’ve finished up to.
It would also be really helpful if once someone’s indicated that they’ve done part of your request that you edit your post to say “Done”.
Also, if you add new items to be combined, please indicate that they are new, for example by preceding them with “ETA:” or “Edit:”.

Tim’s Guidelines for Proper Etiquette for contacting members about their book records:
“For this topic, I still feel strongly that I’d like to consider it bad form. Many others agree with me. But a few think I’m dictating and are angry about that. So, fine. Let’s just write some guidelines up. I propose that the guidelines be something along the lines of:
* Remember that LibraryThing is used for many different reasons. The way you use and enjoy the site is not necessarily the way others do.
* Be sensitive to how the member is using LibraryThing. Approach members who show no interest in the social side more cautiously.
* Try to provide helpful information and ask questions rather than dictating.
*If the user indicates displeasure at the request, let it drop.
* When in doubt, raise the issue in the Combiners! group before sending a message.”
________________________________________
Skittles’ note: I would like to add that we should ALWAYS use private comment when we absolutely must contact a LT’er, even when their response isn’t private.
And, yes, this thread is similar to putting all of our problems together for people to see & say, “Oh, no!! LT isn’t perfect!!” or “Look at all of the problems that LT has.” That isn’t the case here. This is a place to gather “challenges” together to make it easier & faster to “fix” them. Let’s just remember that “bad” data comes from people ... people who make mistakes ... . WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES! (OK, there are a couple of perfect people around here.) Instead of complaining about the problem, let’s fix it.

Dr Mike’s (aka theapparatus) note:
If both works that need to be combine have more than 200 records, please post your request in this thread:
http://www.librarything.com/topic/95602
You need staff intervention to handle that request.

When this thread reaches approximately 200 posts, DO NOT POST HERE, but go to thread #35. This thread will be easier to handle if we keep it under 200 (faster loading). Please copy any notes or instructions to the new thread. Thank you.
Feel free to add comments &/or suggestions ... not just “challenges.”
** There is also a Combiner’s Group Information, FAQ & Discussion Thread #2 at:

That thread is for combining information, discussion in general, not for problems ... .

Not really a combining problem per se, but.... It used to be that the author Carolyn Keene was split into multiple "distinct authors" because of random books showing a wrong author... Or whatever. I don't really know. Anyways, the recent author-page changes seem to have done away with those specific books. The only books under Carolyn Keene now are indeed by that author (or, authors).
So.... should we un-split the author?

Please recall lokal-profil's request in Message 204 from Combining/Separating (Please Fix This Book!) Request Thread #33:
And if someone wants a larger case:
Jules Verne's "From the Earth to the Moon" http://www.librarything.com/work/1376512 seems to be riddled with works which should actually belong in "From the Earth to the Moon and Round the Moon" http://www.librarything.com/work/8036986 which is a combination of that book and it's sequel.

Questions, questions. . .
http://www.librarything.com/work/book/70974707
http://www.librarything.com/work/book/70974704
OK, here’s one for discussion. The first book is a translation of an Italian original. The second book is a translation of a revised and expanded edition of the same original. Same author, same title, same house for the originals; different translators, different titles, same house (different imprint) for the translations. The originals are about 15 years apart.
The works are similar, but the revisions to the original are substantial, and the translations are markedly different.
This isn’t a fixed work, where the original doesn’t/hasn't/won't change – like Anna Karenina might be. Here the original has changed significantly, with the translations (and their titles!) noting that change. (BTW, the title hasn't changed in the original, though the new edition indicates "revised and expanded" in the sub-title.
So. . . to combine or not to combine?
Many thanks to the hardworking and knowledgeable combiners!

but it shows up under 'Various'

and I can't change it. Please help, or explain what I can do to fix it. Thank you!

First of all: if http://www.librarything.com/author/393186626 and http://www.librarything.com/author/augardesteve are the same person (I can't read the characters) they should be combined.
Second: It's odd, because I do see your copy on the workpage attributed to "Steve Augarde"
Third: you can always change your author info. Simply click "edit book" on the work page and take it from there.

It's not Steve Augarde, it's a separate person. Initially I had entered the book under 'Various' for the author, but the system decided it whould be titled 'the various', but listed it on the 'Various' author page. I had deleted and reentered it under the first contributor listed, but it continued to be listed incorrectly.
I've separated it from Augarde's book, 'the various' and it reassigned itself to the correct author. Thanks for pointing me toward Augarde!

19SimoneA
It seems like the book by Steve Augarde (http://www.librarything.com/work/7106) is an attractant for foreign character books. I separated about 10 greek, chinese(?) and russian (?) books with the author various from it. So the Augarde book should be ok now, but there are a lot of stray books in the suggested combination list now.

16, 17, 18, 19> Do we have consensus (or perhaps discussion threads) on entering "various" authors?
I did enter "various" as the author, once, long ago -- in fact, among my very first titles cataloged ( http://www.librarything.com/work/285695/book/39654613 ); but I was dissatisfied with the result, particularly when it came to combinations. Once I found the "Other Authors" option, I began detailing authors, editors, contributors, illustrators, translators, etc. as they matter to me, usually in their order of appearance in the text (hyperlinks not being a big feature of our 15th-Century-technology library).
I haven't much looked at, or encountered, the state of LT in this regard since that time (no going back!), but my impression is it's likely still a mess. I'd be interested / curious / maybe glad to help if there's a campaign underway to bring clarity to this aspect of LT.
If I've missed something, or if we need a "Various" thread, please advise. Thanks to all!

Not sure if the first one is connected with the following 2. 2 and 3 have ISBNs mixed in. I had separated them based on titles but after doing so, I see the ISBNs are shared. The think the 88 is the first edition while the other one is the 2nd edition.
Maybe someone else can understand what's going on.

is the same person but under a pen name.
http://www.librarything.com/author/robbinsdavid-4 and
http://www.librarything.com/author/robbinsdavidl-2
I looked at aliasing the second name to the first but it says that doesn't work for non top levels.
Also
http://www.librarything.com/author/thompsondavid-1 and
http://www.librarything.com/author/mcmastersjake
is the same person but under a pen name.

Could someone have a look at this:
http://www.librarything.de/work/71868/71220307
this book is not showing on the page of the author if you klick the name (http://www.librarything.de/author/evanswentzwy). My friend ows this book. when he is on the work-page everything is fine, it shows 1303 members and the author, but if you click on the author's name you come to the author-page but the book isn't showing up. Any ideas whats wrong here?

Is there a way of combining the two disambiguated authors
http://www.librarything.com/author/robbinsdavid-4 and
http://www.librarything.com/author/robbinsdavidl-2
I looked at aliasing the second name to the first but it says that doesn't work for non top levels.
No. What you do in this situation is alias robbinsdavid-4 to robbinsdavidl, and then assign the books to robbinsdavidl-2.

43 Check the work details. It's on the author page http://www.librarything.com/author/fremantlefrancesca as that is the most used author for that work.

After that baker's dozen, here are a few zero copies I separated because of their ISBNs, but that don't have ISBNs anymore. So I'm not sure if they should go with the unabridged edition (which I separated them from) or the abridged edition (which I was searching for).

I don't understand why separating an edition would cause the ISBN to disappear?
67235711
I don't know exactly what happened. I know I did a page search for certain ISBNs, and separated the copies with those ISBNs, and that when I checked some of them later from the helpers log, they didn't have any. The only copies without ISBNs that I separated were the ones with things like "BBC Radio" in the title.

Yeah, a lot of the original Nancy Drews were completely revised, with significant changes that sometimes made the plot completely different. Those should remain separate. (to me, the annoyance comes when there are other uncombined copies of those type of works, and there is no indication which one I should combine it with. But that's another story...)

I've seen several requests of late to combine 0 copy entries with their corresponding, multi-copy LT work. One example of a work that could use such attention is Elaine Pagels' Reading Judas: The Gospel of Judas and the Shaping of Christianity, which currently has three 0 copy entries in Norwegian (I think) separated from the main work:

75 > I have a question about the third set: http://www.librarything.com/work/11086132 has the ISBN of an entirely different work (this one http://www.librarything.com/work/10336007 ). I separated it from that work earlier today as it obviously didn't belong there. The question is: does it really belong with http://www.librarything.com/work/11002111 instead, based on title and author? Not really, but better than the other way round, yes?
Now would that (when they're not matching, title+author overrules ISBN) also apply in cases like this: http://www.librarything.com/work/5350850 where the two individual books contained in a boxed set have been entered with the ISBN of the set instead of their own?

On the Nancy Drew stuff, shouldn't all the originals and the revised versions be (a) separated, and (b) in two separate series, then? Right now, only this one, #17, is listed as "revised," but it's in the same series with all the others. Shouldn't the rest of the series be treated consistently: either all the original editions combined with the revised ones, or preferably, none of them combined, and the originals listed as a separate series?

I don't think two separate series are necessary... They are all part of the Nancy Drew Mystery Stories series, whether they are the original text or a revised version. Maybe making sure that something like "(#17 revised)" is in the series-field would be nice, but it is the same series.
There are other ND books that are separated into original vs revised (or at least there were, awhile back). The problem is, even if we know that there was a revision done, there's no real way (that I know of) to know if a specific edition is original or revised, unless it says so in the title. Which most of them don't. Like, I look under "editions" for a Nancy Drew book, and I'll see maybe one or two with a year or something in the title, but most have no indicators like that.

77 > You are absolutely right.
http://www.librarything.com/work/11086132 has the ISBN of an entirely different work (this one http://www.librarything.com/work/10336007 from Thomése, P.F).
The separations you made is correct concerning the name. There is only 1 work with the title De Kraai (http://www.librarything.com/work/11002111)
So please combine nr.3. - http://www.librarything.com/work/11086132 and
http://www.librarything.nl/work/11086135 with work 11002111.
Concerning the other case: 'De boodschapper : een vertelling ; De Koran : een vertaling / Kader Abdolah (ISBN 9044509136)' - http://www.librarything.com/work/5350850. This is a one time specially published edition in a box, with only that ISBN nr.
In al the other cases they are seperate published books with their own ISBN nr.
This can also be read in the disambiguation notice I made
From the 2nd edition they were published seperately. I think this has also something to do with the fact that not everybody is interested in bying the translations of the Koran by Kader Abdolah. Actually it is more an understandeble translation to explaine the content of some passages of the Koran.
Therefore should those two works not go together with the box-edition but has to be seen as different works, because the ISBN nr, is different. Normally the ISBN nr. stays the same as long the books are published by the same publisher.
De boodschapper : een vertelling (http://www.librarything.com/work/11073612)

> 87 to my understanding 0-copy works can only be combined with the url-method by those of us who are in the know (not me). Sometimes when I feel up to it I do the (normal) copy-paste from the editions page and add to my library. It works, but it just feels... unrewarding and is certainly a daunting task when there's many.
> 84 (Hai Guurtje) I did 'De Kraai' the way I described above.
From your answer I could tell that I should have expressed myself better. What I meant was: on the editions page of http://www.librarything.com/work/5350850 you see many entries that have the right ISBN (9044509136), but only one of the titles, not both, which probably means the member who entered it that way only has one of the two books, or has both but entered them separately while using the ISBN for the box, not the ones for the individual books (some people don't care for the right ISBN). I tried a title search on OverCat and found that the Vlaamse Centrale Catalogus gives several single title options but with the box's ISBN... so not even all libraries care for the correct ISBN. You'll see what I mean here: http://www.librarything.com/catalog/leiseboer&author=abdolahkader and here: http://www.librarything.com/catalog/rieja&author=abdolahkader
My guess is that in cases like this it's probably better to separate/combine according to title instead of ISBN, so that members will be connected with the work they actually meant to enter. I think the autocombine system which decides to what work editions go upon entry can handle this (can other combiners confirm this?). I'd adjust the disambiguation notices to no longer mention the ISBN. Oh, by the way, one of the ISBNs (9789044509137) you gave for both separate editions is actually the 13 digit version of 9044509136 (the box) :-)

> 89 There seem to be three types of 0-copies
- the ones that just pretend to be 0-copies, like you mentioned
- the ones that will show up on editions page in blue as options to combine, but are no longer available when you go to the work combining page (occasionaly these do show up on the author combining page, I think). They can be dealt with the way I described in post 88 (or url method)
- the ones that don't even have an actual edition line. These come up in search every now and then. Only url-method will work for them.

Hi folks,
These author names should be combined. I tried, but I could not figure out how to do it.

http://www.librarything.com/author/gilmancharlotteperki
Also, will that force the books to combine?
Thanks,

>98 krazy4katz: I combined the authors (in the box on the right there is a part that says "combine with ..." and a "Search" link that takes you to a box where you can type in your author) and combined a couple of books that I could see right off - I'll work on this author more tomorrow.

unsolvable problem:

The ISBN says play, the author says novel, and the five people who have it catalogued seem to disagree which is decisive. I added a disambiguation notice, but I'm not sure it should be combined with either work.

I'm sitting here looking at the main work:

And there's a Disambiguation notice on it:
>Please do not combine this LT work with any abridged edition, or with any edition that omits Lewis' additional piece, "Screwtape Proposes a Toast." Each of these variants should be combined only with similar LT works. Thank you.
While the Amazon record for the 11100124 record and there's no mention that if it has the additional piece that's required. It does say though that it is unabridged.
Care to clarify?

Comic books are mostly listed under the author of the story, with the illustrator(s) added to the book. When the illustrator is the more famous person, some people list the book under her/his name. Combining the book is a bit tricky.

Need help with combining (or maybe aliasing? I haven't figured out the new stuff).

I just did #123, 127, 129, 130.
Messages #119 & 120 were already done.
Papiervisje, I described below one way to combine works, also if one does not have an author. If you can't combine the Dark Horse works yourself for whatever reason, I'd be glad to help, but then it would help if you would add the works to a series (I guess this one... http://www.librarything.com/series/Dark+Horse+Presents). Having all works and authors on one page helps to keep track of combining.
How to combine two works:
-Add a copy of work A (if there is an authorless work, add that one)
-Change the title and author to that of work B, but add a period or comma to the end
-Then work B usually pops up on the suggested combination list

-Change the title and author to that of work B, but add a period or comma to the end
-Then work B usually pops up on the suggested combination list

I'm doing Common Knowledge on a series: Bureau of American Ethnology Annual Reports. It's complicated. The annual reports usually included "papers" which have since been reprinted as works in their own right. So a lot of users have the reprints, and a few have the original annual reports.
Please combine these three versions of the 25th Annual Report:
http://www.librarything.com/work/10830974
This one has the correct author. (According to the Smithsonian list (here), the author of the 25th Annual Report is W.H. Holmes.)
http://www.librarything.com/work/3558413
No author (and I've done CK on it).
http://www.librarything.com/work/9733818
Incorrectly credited to J. Walter Fewkes (who wrote the two papers appended to the 25th Annual Report, but not the report itself).
Thanks.

Need further help to distinguish authors:
Terry Kay (1), http://www.librarything.com/author/kayterry-1 , is the Southern U.S. (Georgia) author of To Dance With the White Dog. Most of his books appear to be correctly entered with the author as "Terry Kay."
Terry Kay (2) : Terry Kaye, http://www.librarything.com/author/kayterry-2 , appears to actually be Terry Kaye, an author of Hebrew grammar and Judaica instruction books. Most titles here seem to be (correctly) entered with an "e" on "Kaye," but a particular 3-book series, Hebrew through Prayer, is entered without the final "e." Incidentally, WorldCat identifies this author as "Kaye."
I've only managed to disambiguate the authors; please separate them completely, if you can, or advise how this might be done. Thank you!

Kaye seems to have been combined in. I would separate, but it would still need to be aliased, and I'm not sure how to do that.

Are you sure the Ahmed Ali book is not actually mistitled? Ali is the translator of an English version of the Quran. You might take it out of the Sacred Writings series (in CK) and combine with The Quran (since we're lumping all translations into one work).

Should we? We don't for the Bible, after all. Is it just that we're assuming most LTers are Christian, and likely to care passionately about tiny differences in translations of the Bible while they take a "any one is good enough" view of translations of the Quran, or is the entire issue less fraught in Islam because of the view that the Arabic original is the only real one and all the translations are flawed anyway?

Actually, its the Bible that should be combined. But when we get the expression layer each translation can still be separate in a sense. In the meantime it's probably better to keep it separate so that all the work doesn't have to be redone for the expression layer.

The Bible also has the issue of Protestant/ Protestant with Apocropha/ Roman Catholic/Orthodox which have different contents.

I actually don't know. I just don't understand -- not in the "don't agree with" sense, but in the "someone please explain this to me" sense, why the Bible is treated differently, not only from literary texts that exist in multiple translations but also from other sacred texts that exist in multiple translations. Really, this is the situation crying out for "expressions"; even if the KJV is not the same thing as the NIV, they're related in a way that the current system doesn't reflect.
This discussion should probably be taken to the "theory of combining" thread, though, to avoid cluttering things up here.

I found two anthologies, one recorded under four authors, the other under two authors, and I didn't find the way to combine these under their actual author/editor, shown below by touchstoning:
1) "Bad-Ass Faeries 2: Just Plain Bad", by Danielle Ackley-McPhail:

I remember once managing to do something like this, but it's been a long time ago and I forgot how it's done. So, if someone could be so kind as to fix these two works, then explain on a step-by-step basis how it's accomplished, I'd be quite thankful!

I have to agree with Lorax in #148. Sure, I will abide with the consensus not to combine them. But I really really don't get why different editions of the bible are treated so very differently from editions of any other ancient text.
P.s.: Heck, going by the coctail party rule we might also combine the Bible with the Quran.

That's a wonderfull remark and the solution to end the most wars (I'm just dreaming and hoping).
But search for Bijbel and you'll see the big mess, which is only in Dutch. Not all of them are combined with the Bible.
Also for the Quran, you'll find some editions which are f.e. translated in a short edtion. Those should not be combined.

Working on 161
edit: Done. Found an additional work on the 3rd one.
Not sure how we handle bibles here. The 5th one appears to be from a group called "International Bible Society". You may want to consider adding that in as the author so the system can pick it up.
Is that what we do with bibles?
There's a cover for it here:
http://www.paperbackswap.com/Path-Victory-Sports-International-Bible-Society/boo...
reedit: Just found a dozen more of the Path to Victory one. Adding them in now. That does appear to be what we do for bibles as IBS is listed as the author on a couple of those.

About combining bibles, read http://www.librarything.com/topic/59999 for starters. But I think the Path to Victory versions neaded combining the way you did - although I puzzle at all the various covers. I trust the text of the bibles is identical and I hope the testimonies are the same also.
Thanks.

Not a problem.
I can see the covers like that actually as different ones for different sports. At to the testimonies, it says Athletes and doesn't break it down to the different sports. If you look at the editions page, there's not a single mention of an individual sport.
It would have been nicer though to see some ISBNs though. On at the very least one of those works.
I bounced categorizing bibles off the staff here at the library I'm sitting in and they're still discussing it. (I got my MLS 20+ years ago. I;m way out of date plus these folks use an outsourcer I believe for cataloging information.) They sound like they're of the opinion of using the translation type (ie King James, NIV, etc) as the author so to make it easier to find in the categole system but that discussion is for the other thread.

And if you're not intimidated by jasbro's lists of combinations and are able to combine zero copies, most of the ones I proposed earlier in the thread haven't been done yet. edit: Now they have. (I know I could ask an initiate for the secret magic and do them myself, but have decided to protect both myself and LT by not doing so for the moment.)

41 up there is still up for discussion as well.
I'm going to have to hold off any more combining right now. It's too cold for the butt naked dancing under the full moon today to the sounds of Simon and Yanovic while gargling A1. (ie Combining seems to be slow today.)
edit: Oh, and I decided to drop those bible folks and email and ask them to confirm the different covers on that bible.

Last year Interweave Press / Piecework Magazine put out a special publication called "Knitting Traditions." At the time, most people thought it was a book, a one-off publication. Now there's a second one: apparently it is an annual thing.
Before I enter Knitting Traditions 2011 on LibraryThing, I want to put the problem of combining all of last year's entries for Knitting Traditions 2010 in the hands of someone more capable than I.
I think the best entry to combine *with* is the first one listed below. It has the editor who signed the introduction listed as the "author" and the canonical title changed to Knitting Traditions Winter 2010 (to harmonize with the canonical title of this year's Knitting Traditions Winter 2011). But I could agree with an author "editors of Piecework Magazine" (only, that *is* Jeane Hutchins) or even "Interweave Press". I put them in as alternate "authors".
Please combine:
http://www.librarything.com/work/9784059
http://www.librarything.com/work/9701051
http://www.librarything.com/work/10561878
http://www.librarything.com/work/11014086
http://www.librarything.com/work/10361510
that last *could* be questionable because she didn't put any information beyond the title - but that's what makes me think it is the 2010 one.
On the other hand, don't combine
http://www.librarything.com/work/11016829
with the above group - the person has put up a photo and it's the 2011 edition.

172 done. Not sure why we're indexing individual booklets coming out of boxed sets though. (Not directed at you of course. Seems like it's a bad habit around here.)
I noticed that someone combined the Ship Construction Manuals yet again. I'll separate them out. Again.
And just FYIs in case you haven't seen them:

Thank you theapparatus. Actually if I still had the box to put the booklets in, I would index it as a box set, but as they are, they are loose. :( I wasn't even aware that they came from a box set until I started looking to add them. Do you know which box set these belong to, so a work-to-work relationship can be done? Thanks!
175theapparatus
*sigh* The Legends and Lore hard covers are all combined too.
World of Grayhawk boxed set: http://www.librarything.com/work/1082560
Let me check on that one please if you're not able to. I'm at a coffee shop and the pdf of that is at home. I don;t recall it being sold separately though.
The blue cover star trek rpg books I believe were the second edition boxed set. (And those and the 1st ed are combined too. Nice.) That should be this one:
http://www.librarything.com/work/1538881
171 is done. The knitting mags. There's a Knitting Traditions tag if you want to use it for that.
edit: The blue cover star trek rpg materials are the second edition:
http://www.waynesbooks.com/FASAStarTrek.html
The first edition I believe was a single perfect bound (ie squared off) booklet.

Well, I added the work-to-work relationship for the Star Trek RPG pamplets to the box set (that was the one I thought they belonged to), and added them to the proper serieses, but I'm leaving the Greyhawk one alone. My copy auto-combined with the "Folio Edition" because of the ISBN, probably, which has a disambiguation notice about the "Box Set Edition." So I will assume, unless informed otherwise, that they are different. Thanks for your help!
177theapparatus
Not a problem. The TSR boxed set stuff is kind of weird anyway. Some of the boxed sets, each individual item had it's own ISBN while other boxed sets didn;t have any on what was inside. I believe the Gangbusters had one for everything while the Star Frontiers (Alpha Dawn) each item had it's own ISBN.

The German edition of J.G. Ballard's The Impossible Man (Der unmögliche Mensch und andere Stories. http://www.librarything.com/work/375814 ) and Louise Brown's Ein einziges Jahr ( http://www.librarything.com/work/11136169 ) appear to share ISBN 3547711541, and Amazon.com proposes the cover of Brown's book as an option for Ballard's. I've separated Brown's book from Ballard's, and "disambiguated" Louise Brown on the corresponding top-level author page (not knowing or finding anything more about her or her book); but I'm wonder if there's a way to further disassociate the two works? Thanks for your help.
182Heather19
Hmm, where exactly did you disambiguate it? I followed the links you posted, and then clicked over to each author's page, and I don't see any notices.
You should probably also put a disambiguation notice on the works themselves (or at least one of the works), so that if anyone mistakingly tries to combine them they'll see the notice. Right now they won't.

182> I replied earlier, but I don't see that message here now. With apologies for any duplication, and for lack of clarity in my Message 181 above: What (I thought) I did was to split authors from the Ballard work, then alias Louise Brown's work from the resulting author disambiguation page. I've now added Disambiguation Notices to each work's Main Page, per your recommendation, and I would welcome anyone else's review / improvement of the results. Thanks for your suggestion, Heather19!

I'll start the NCIS stuff. Just to mention, instead of listing them like that, it may be easier to assign them into a Series and just point folks to it. That's how I do it. Get the CK credit as well if you look at that.

Help needed overriding automatic system combinations please!!
I just entered an item under the author 'King Jim' and the system automatically included it with 'Jim King'
It shows as only including one author name so I cannot 'un-combine' or separate out.
I tried renaming the author as 'King Jim (Band)' but this had no effect and it remained as part of 'Jim King'.
I tried splitting the author but this just created a record for 'Jim King (2): King Jim (Band)'
How do I get it out and on to it's own page and so it does not show as Jim King or a sub division?
How do I avoid the system making erroneous combinations in the future??
Any help appreciated!
Thank you (she says hopefully)

Gilroy, I wrote that before realizing that you had done them up as a series. Sorry about that. I've been thinking about series as well and going to look for them when I can.
Maybe we should start a wiki page of show titles and work our way though it.

I was scared when you said you found more NCIS shows beyond what I had. :>
I figured it must be foreign language stuff, since I didn't check with that. The search found most of what I got. I just don't know the URL combo trick and renaming doesn't always link them.

The system cannot distinguish between "kingjim" -- what it gets from collapsing "King Jim" by removing spaces -- and "kingjim" (what it gets from collapsing "King, Jim" by removing spaces and punctuation). You have twooptions:
1. Live with it; you've done everything you can, and with the split author the link from your own catalog will always go to the kingjim-2 page so you never have to see the other work.
2. Change the name to something that will be recognized as different, not using parentheses (which are ignored). "Jim King - Band", or something.

Thanks for the suggestion - I couldn't see an option where to do that although I thought previously you could - not that it always works and if it collapses the record as suggested it would surely make no difference and automatically combine anyway?
I'll take a look and see but may just use the non parentheses method...
