MARCH ROOT - Progress Thread

The theme and question this month is HEALTH. I couldn't resist.

Since everyone here knows that I've been having a few health issues, they should know that after spending 22 days in the hospital over the last 7 weeks, I spent a good deal of time considering my state of health. Lying in a hospital bed connected to IVs and machinery to monitor physical functions in your body that are unseen and which at times you have no control over can be terrifying - and extremely thought provoking.

So here are the questions of the month:

1. Do you think that you are in good health?
2. Do you consult with your family doctor regularly or only when you don't feel well?
3. Have you ever been given advice by your doctor and ignored it?
4. Have you ever needed to make a complete change to your lifestyle for health reasons?
5. Do you make resolutions to improve your health and then not follow through?
6. What do you think is your biggest omission in preserving your health?

My sincerest apologies for the horrible delay in getting the numbers for February gathered and this thread posted. My only excuse was an overabundance of doctors appointments and exhaustion. Every time I sat down to gather numbers, I managed to fall asleep before completing the task.

I am feeling better since getting home from my 3rd hospital stay and am actually looking forward to the procedure on Friday morning which should blast this horrid kidney stone to smithereens!

Hopefully, I will have no more reasons for delays in the future.

Happy reading to all!

Don't worry about it! Taking care of yourself is far more important. Glad you're feeling better and I hope the procedure on Friday goes well :)

Exactly what rabbitprincess said! You are allowed to prioritise yourself and your health!

I know I'm not as healthy as I could be. I am going to have some cardiac investigations soon (not invasive), and I really need to shift some weight. However, I am really resistant to the idea of dieting (because even if they work in the short term, they never last, and just succeed in making me feel miserable and guilty and a failure and a terrible person. And then I just head for the cake). I think I need to get a better balance of working/leisure hours and make more of an effort to return to swimming a couple of times a week. But there aren't enough hours in the day at the moment! :)

1. Do you think that you are in good health?
I feel okay but I know there are issues, such as blood pressure and uric acid I have to have regular medication for
2. Do you consult with your family doctor regularly or only when you don't feel well?
The result is I have to see my doctor once a quarter to get my medication topped up
3. Have you ever been given advice by your doctor and ignored it?
Her standard advice to eat less and exercise more
4. Have you ever needed to make a complete change to your lifestyle for health reasons?
I need to and know I should eat less and exercise more but it never lasts long
5. Do you make resolutions to improve your health and then not follow through?
All the time: tomorrow never comes
6. What do you think is your biggest omission in preserving your health?
Not getting enough exercise. I'd rather read

7curioussquared

Sending good thoughts for your procedure!

I think I am generally pretty health-conscious, but I could eat a little healthier for sure. I have been prioritizing exercise much better than usual over the past few months, particularly since I got my new under-desk treadmill which allows me to easily hit at least 10k steps every workday and makes moving my body when I have a full time job and want to spend a lot of my free time reading much more attainable!

8atozgrl

I third >4 rabbitprincess: and >5 Jackie_K:! Please take care of yourself first! And I'm also sending best wishes for a successful outcome on Friday.

1. Do you think that you are in good health?
Overall, I think my health is good.
2. Do you consult with your family doctor regularly or only when you don't feel well?
I keep up with my annual physicals, as well as regular tests (mammograms, dermatologist, etc.)
3. Have you ever been given advice by your doctor and ignored it?
The doctors all tell me to get more exercise. I'm trying, but I'm still not getting as much as I should.
4. Have you ever needed to make a complete change to your lifestyle for health reasons?
I haven't yet, but Mr. A. had to change up his diet for quite a few months when he got an ulcer after taking NSAIDs for too long. It was hard cooking for him while he was on the diet. One of the things he couldn't have was onions, and that made it really hard to cook or find prepared foods in the store. If you can't have foods with cream or tomatoes or onions, it's almost impossible to find a soup that will work.
5. Do you make resolutions to improve your health and then not follow through?
I'm not one for making resolutions.
6. What do you think is your biggest omission in preserving your health?
As I mentioned before, not enough exercise. I think we eat pretty well overall, aside from some snacks. But exercise is my downfall.

9MissWatson
Mar 7, 2023, 3:24 am

Like everyone already said, Chèli, make sure you're okay before you start worrying about the numbers!
And my answers are pretty much like everyone else's:

1. I think my health is pretty good, apart from blood pressure which needs medication.
2. I see the GP for the medication regularly and I am pretty consistent about screenings.
3. The GP always tells me to lose weight and do more exercise, but I prefer reading...
4. I haven't, so far.
5. I have managed to cut my sugar intake, but there it ends.
6. Exercise. I'm hoping that I can make more time in the day for it once I'm retired, but after work, cooking dinner, housekeeping and reading there's not much time left.

10connie53
Mar 7, 2023, 4:34 am

Chèli, just look after yourself first. If you need any help or someone as a back up just yell.

My answers.

1. Do you think that you are in good health?
I think I am. If I have issues with my health they are mostly technical. I mean a bad knee and things like that, nothing with my organs as far as I know.
2. Do you consult with your family doctor regularly or only when you don't feel well?
Only if I don't feel well and yearly with the assistent of the family doctor for things as blood pressure and diagnostic blood tests. Luckily I was NOT diagnosed with diabetes.
3. Have you ever been given advice by your doctor and ignored it?
No, but I do ignore some exercises my physiotherapist gave me. Just laziness on my part
4. Have you ever needed to make a complete change to your lifestyle for health reasons?
No, I did not.
5. Do you make resolutions to improve your health and then not follow through?
Yes, I'm eating more vegetables now and plan to follow through.
6. What do you think is your biggest omission in preserving your health?
Rosé and smoking. But I'm reducing both. And I'm a bit embarrassed to admit to still smoking.

11cyderry
Mar 7, 2023, 2:32 pm

Well, now that many of you have "completed" the health survey, I'll give my answers.

1. Do you think that you are in good health?
I thought I was in good health mostly, a bit overweight but apparently not.

2. Do you consult with your family doctor regularly or only when you don't feel well?
I see my GP regularly and consult him if I think something is wrong

3. Have you ever been given advice by your doctor and ignored it? here I am guilty. My endocrinologist kept telling me that I needed to monitor my Blood Sugar more frequently. Then when I got these bad infections and meds were pumped in to kill them, they threw off my blood sugars. Now instead of just pills, I'm on insulin. But I'm adjusting to that pretty well.

4. Have you ever needed to make a complete change to your lifestyle for health reasons?
That's where I am right now. I used to pretty much eat anything I wanted but now I have been put on a low carb high protein diet(KETO ANYONE?) and it's been hard to give up some of my favorite foods - croissants, pasta, cookies, pastries but I'm getting there. There are a great number of books that I've found that give me the counts of what food has what carbs and proteins.

5. Do you make resolutions to improve your health and then not follow through?
Every year I try to get more exercise but find that physical limitations hold me back from doing that. My bad back and bad knees scream at walking or cycling, but I have hope! Tim and I are putting a pool in the yard at the new house and I should be able to swim and water walk every day!

6. What do you think is your biggest omission in preserving your health? I think that my biggest hindrance for my health is my own stubbornness. I hold off until it hits me smack in the face that I need to do something to not get sick. I'm going to try to do better in 2023 because, Gods knows, I do not want to go back to the hospital again!

Thanks to you all for your kind words of support!

I had been thinking about my answers, but had not written them down.

1. Overall health -- I don't like to think that my health might be fair instead of good. Since my mid 70s (I'm 79 now), I've had some health problems, but not as bad as many people's. I've had cataracts successfully removed from both eyes (although now I need to take drops nightly for mild glaucoma). For twelve years I've had arthritis in both shoulders, and approximately five years in both knees but not severe enough for replacement surgery. My dental problems have been worse the last two years. I've had two teeth removed, and next Monday I'm scheduled to have a replacement tooth inserted for the one I need; the other I can do without. I have trouble getting up from soft chairs/sofas or chairs which are too low. I've been sticking to solid chairs, etc.

2. I consult the appropriate doctor for my health needs. Sometimes it is a specialist instead of my PCP (primary care physician) although I keep her in the loop. I see my PCP for my annual exam.

3. The only advice which I have ignored from a medical professional (nurse in this case) is to take powdered fiber daily for my irritable bowel syndrome, which usually is not causing me any problems. (Was relieved to find my bowel problems were caused by IBS, not cancer.

4. The last 3 months I have been unable to do my daily exercise because I managed to break my foot in early December. Last week I was given the go ahead to follow my normal life pattern. I really do not enjoy exercising, but do it because I am supposed to do so. Going to the gym regularly makes it easier.

5. I do not make resolutions.

6. Biggest omissions recently: not eating enough fruit and especially vegetables. Enjoy these foods, but our retirement community tends not to cook plain vegetables -- puts them in sauces, casseroles, etc. I need to buckle down and eat fresh vegetables in addition to fresh fruits, especially for snacks.

1. Do you think that you are in good health? Yes

2. Do you consult with your family doctor regularly or only when you don't feel well? I see the Dr. every six months.

3. Have you ever been given advice by your doctor and ignored it? The only time I remember was when she recommended a weight loss drug. That was about 20 years ago and I irritated her by refusing them. A friend took them and inccured heart damage before they were removed from the market.

4. Have you ever needed to make a complete change to your lifestyle for health reasons? For sure.

5. Do you make resolutions to improve your health and then not follow through? In the past, yes. Now, No.

I've struggled with weight since I was a child. I went on my first diet when I was about 12. I have been lucky to remain healthy until I was 50 (I'm now 73) and the doctor prescribed blood pressure and type 2 diabetes medications. That scared me but I had been on many weight loss programs and none of them were successful. At that point I quit reading weight loss books, listening to "experts", or using anyone's diet.
I began to avoid weight loss conversation with friends and family. Instead I developed my own plan to healthy living. I made changes very slowly and focused on one small change at a time. I did not eliminate any foods but worked on amounts I ate. Eventually I learned a lot of my eating was triggered by stress, anxiety and exhaustion.

Over the years I have lost about 130 lbs. A1c is normal without meds but I take 10mg of blood pressure medicine daily.

Here are some of the things that have helped me:

*I don't weigh on a scale except at the Dr's office. I keep a pair of jeans and a top that are too tight to wear in the closet and try them on every few weeks. Once I realized my weight fluctuated as much as 3 lbs a day and because the scale measured a lot more than fat, it seemed pointless and only caused more stress.

*When I make a change it is broken down into parts if possible. When I'm ready to take on another challenge I ask myself: What can I do? Meaning pick one small change that is doable, not something somebody else says I have to do. I have to be honest with myself. The first "project" was a healthier breakfast. I had been eating a huge pastry every day (after my first meeting of the day at 6:30 AM). The first step was eliminating about 1/4 of the pastry. When I felt satisfied with that amount I started eating 1/2. When I said I took it slow I meant it! But, for me this has worked and has allowed me to totally change my diet over years.

*I like exercise of the gentle sort but the gym is not the right place for me. I like to be outside and I walk 2.5 to 3 miles a day now in a pretty park where I also visit with other people, the old trees, and whatever animal comes along. LOL. I walk at whatever pace my body wants to go that day and don't get into competitive situations. Really hot or cold days here don't last a long time and sometimes I can arrange my schedule to go very early on the hot ones. I also like doing exercises with Silver Sneakers online and I have a stationary bike if I want to ride it.

I saw the Dr. a few weeks ago and her records show I've lost 132 pounds. I'm not at the weight I'd like to be but will just continue what I'm doing and let this old body do it's thing. One of the things I've learned to accept is that we don't know much about how our bodies work and they won't be following our rules. I have accepted that I don't make any decisions except behaveorial. Our bodies decide how to react to them. On it's own terms and it's own time.

I'm adding one more thing. When I hit a long spot where my weight didn't change for months, my Dr. told me my job was to stay the course. Remembering my job in that way does help me persevere.

Mar 8, 2023, 5:31 pm

>14 clue: Your way of dealing with weight and dieting makes a lot of sense to me. It's obviously working for you, and it would probably work for many of us. I think you're right that our bodies just react to changes in their own way, and it's not the same for everyone. Thanks for sharing that!

Currently struggling to be engaged in any of my hobbies I finally finished the interesting Two Years in the Forbidden City, a book at only 236 pages that should have taken no more than three day to finish, but took me over a month but c'est la vie. The time it took me to read is no reflection on my enjoyment however. This was a great companion novel to the memoir I read last year about the Empress Dowager Cixi. Two Years follows a year out of the two spent by Princess Der Ling as Cixi's favorite lady-in-waiting.

>14 clue: Luanne, your process of going slowly sounds very much like my process when I was quitting smoking. I would give myself a timeframe, when I wanted a cigarette I would tell myself, "you can wait an hour" next time it was 2 hours, etc. That way I cut down a lot. Then I would tell myself "you can give it up for 1 day" and because I had cut down the first day wasn't that bad. Then I cut down more, went for 2 days, cut down more, 4 days, and by the time I got to giving up for a week, I didn't go back. Little steps seemed to work, I never thought to use the same process for weight control (I too have struggled all my life.) I too know that my eating habits are driven my boredom, inactivity, and stress,

Because I now find myself having to make a drastic change to my eating habits, I've turned it into a game. My glucose meter is the score keeper and so far I haven't won but I'm not near losing like I felt like in the hospital, so the marathon is still being run, but the finish line is still far ahead.

Great questionnaire, Cheli. It took me a while to answer but made me think about my health, which I guess was the idea. From the looks of the thread, it seems you made quite a few of us ROOTers think.

Here are my answers:

1. I’d say I’m in good health for my age (71).

2. I consult my doctor regularly. Well, you have to, don’t you, when on continuing meds? The doctor always wants to check you out before you get a renewal of a prescription.

3. I ignored advice from my doctor to take calcium. When I pointed out that my kidney stones had been mainly calcium he agreed that it was probably best not to take a supplement.

4. I’ve never had to change my lifestyle for health reasons except for increasing my water intake. I’m still not very good at that.

5. I’m currently working to improve my diet and hope that I follow through. I’ve also resolved to get back to weight training but that’s a harder task than it seems because I have to clear all the stacks of stuff that have accumulated on my weight bench. That’s not a fail yet but it has been a while since I made that resolution. Oddly enough, one of the reasons I gave up on the weights was because my Fitbit didn’t record those workouts well.

6. I think my biggest omission is the water intake thing but I do try.

>3 cyderry: you don't need to apologize, we're glad you're feeling better!

1. Do you think that you are in good health?
Good health, yes. I'm overweight but all my numbers are good, like blood pressure. I take a prescription for D, but don't need anything else.

2. Do you consult with your family doctor regularly or only when you don't feel well?
If I have a question I try to contact my doctor, but she's very busy and hard to talk to unless I schedule an appointment. Most of the time I handle my health with knowledge and experience.

3. Have you ever been given advice by your doctor and ignored it?
Depends on the doctor, I've had two primary doctors in the last 25 years, a couple specialists. I've made decisions to not follow my doctor's advice and they were understanding of my choice.

4. Have you ever needed to make a complete change to your lifestyle for health reasons?
Before I had my hip replacement I had to lose weight even though I could barely walk. A couple months of eating smaller portions and healthier food did the trick. I'm also allergic to many different foods, so I have adjusted my diet accordingly.

5. Do you make resolutions to improve your health and then not follow through?
No.

6. What do you think is your biggest omission in preserving your health?
Sugar, I love sugar.

Because of my drive to Kansas to see about my Mom I finished three ROOT's. All the Presidents' Gardens: Madison's Cabbages to Kennedy's Roses, How the White House Grounds Have Grown with America by Marta McDowell, German Wife by Kelly Rimmer, and Lady in Gold: The Extraordinary Tale of Gustav Klimt's Masterpiece, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer by Anne-Marie O'Connor. I enjoyed all three of them. Now I want to see the movie of Lady in Gold - if I can find it.

Earlier this month I had finished reading Beatrix Potter's Gardening Life: The Plants and Places That Inspired the Classic Children's Tales also by Marta McDowell and really liked that book. It as better than the one on the White House gardens.

This months questions:
1. Do you think that you are in good health? for my age my health is okay. I am sure it could be better but it also could be worse. What I've realized recently that at my age it is a lot harder to recover and get better and if not diligent, you lose ground fast.
2. Do you consult with your family doctor regularly or only when you don't feel well? I tend to not run to a doctor often, prior to covid I did go in once a year. Covid has changed my health behaviors.
3. Have you ever been given advice by your doctor and ignored it? the answer is kind of. I've chosen to not do certain things but they were my choice not the doctors.
4. Have you ever needed to make a complete change to your lifestyle for health reasons? I've always watched things like diet and have tried to exercise on a regular basis. I'm trying to do the things recommended for my age.
5. Do you make resolutions to improve your health and then not follow through? I do not make New Year resolutions but I do find I have to be in the right frame of mind to make changes that I might want to make.
6. What do you think is your biggest omission in preserving your health? I probably am not eating as good as I should but some things I try to do is eat real foods, avoiding processed foods, "flavored" foods, I try to limit meat and dairy in my diet. Chocolate is my biggest weakness. I also probably do not drink enough water.

Having had a recent kidney stone and seeing the dietary recommendations through me for a loop. So many healthy foods that I have always included in my diet.

Another ROOT done. I managed to finish reading Memphis by Tara M. Stringfellow while waiting around in doctors offices on Monday. Waiting is great reading time. And Memphis is a good book. I think it tries to cover too many things in the same book, but it was interesting.

Root 3 for March, 12 overall with the gripping thriller The Wildfire Season by Andrew Pyper. It's set in the Yukon, and the descriptions of the setting, fire and wildlife are fantastic.

Tickers are updated.

ROOT #5 for the year and #1 for March- Key Lime Pie Murder by Joanna Fluke. I really want to like the Hannah Swenson mysteries, but all the talk about weight and calories isn't really my cup of tea. The other characters in the book are constantly putting Hannah down because of her body! Boo.
I'm having a hard time getting my ROOTs read this year. Last year, I was looking to join a bookclub and I have now found myself in 2 of them! So many books, so little time...

I have finished the following two books but am quite busy so my progress with Anna Karenina has stopped and I haven't been able to write down my comments on these two read books.

John Wyndham : The Midwich Cuckoos
Jules Verne : Le phare du bout du monde (Lighthouse at the End of the World)

Hello, everyone!

I think I am FINALLY on the road to recovery. I was taken off the toxic IVs last Thursday and though they are still having some effect on my stomach, I am beginning to feel better. My other systems (sleep, concentration, etc.) seem to be going back to normal so I have actually been reading! I am hoping that I can keep my star.

Thank you all for your kind thoughts and prayers. They are truly appreciated.

I don't think I'm going to get anything else finished by the end of today, so my final tally is 4 ROOTs for March - 10 overall for the year to date, so 3 behind where I need to be to stay on target. Hopefully I can start to catch up in April.

I had a great reading month. I ROOTed 11 titles. No tickers are updated. 4 of the 11 titles were for upcoming Book Club discussions. There are lots of recorded books on the list because I did lots of driving in March. Driving time is quality time with recorded books. I doubt that I will do this good in one month for the rest of the year - simply because I hope to be staying home. Here is the breakdown of the titles I read or listened to this month.

Fiction
Galatea by Madeline Miller
Coldest Case by Martin Walker
Dance With the Devil by Kit Rocha
Memphis by Tara M. Stringfellow

Nonfiction
Beatrix Potter's Gardening Life: The Plants and Places That Inspired the Classic Children's Tales by Marta McDowell
All the Presidents' Gardens: Madison's Cabbages to Kennedy's Roses - How the White House Grounds Have Grown with America by Marta McDowell
Empires of the Sea: The Siege of Malta, the Battle of Lepanto, and the Contest for the Center of the World by Roger Crowley

Sound Recordings
She Come By It Natural: Dolly Parton and the Women Who Lived Her Songs by Sarah Smarsh
German Wife by Kelly Rimmer
Lady in Gold: The Extraordinary Tale of Gustav Klimt's Masterpiece, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer by Anne-Marie O'Connor
Broken Throne: A Red Queen Collection by Victoria Aveyard
