I noticed that other people have received their copies of "Triskellion" by Will Peterson over a month ago but mine never arrived.

Has anyone else had problems with early reviewer books never appearing?

Aug 18, 2008, 11:54 pm

I have never had any problems until the June Batch when I was supposed to receive Feather Man by Rhyll McMaster, really disappointing because I was looking forward to this one quite a bit.

I haven't received my copy of Feather Man either. I'm looking forward to reading it.

Still no Infoquake here. I noticed in the July book watch thread that one person in the UK posted they got their copy August 1, but I haven't seen anyone in the U.S. post about receiving it.

I note the the company is in the U.K. and I'm starting to wonder if I goofed and requested a book available only to those in the U.K. I try to pay attention, but maybe I missed it.

I still haven't received Schooled from June...

I'm so sad. :(

GwenH, I believe Abby runs eligibility as part of the formula when requesting a book. I don't think you can win a book that you're not eligible for.

8Bookmarque
Aug 21, 2008, 10:22 am

Killing Circle from the July batch is still AWOL. First time this has happened for me. Everything else has come in quickly.

9GwenH

#7 JoleneConnelly,
Thanks for that eligibility info. The flags disappear, so I wasn't able to go back and check.

10ablachly
Aug 21, 2008, 12:03 pm

> 5
Infoquake was available to US and UK - but since they're based in the UK, it'll take a little longer for the books to get to the US. And message 7 is right - it's impossible to win a book you're not eligible for.

> 6
I know a lot of people are still waiting for Schooled - I'm talking to the publisher today. I know the books were sent out but maybe something went wrong somewhere along the line.

And generally, don't worry about July books yet. They really can take up to 2 months to show up.

Thanks for the additional info. I've received two prior books and they arrived fairly quickly so I got spoiled!

I got the Killing Circle really quickly. Doesn't make sense.

13NovelBookworm
Aug 21, 2008, 6:23 pm

#8--that's odd, you might want to follow up on it. I got my copy a couple of weeks ago. Especially if you're in the US. I usually am one of the last to receive books, they seem to arrive starting at the East coast first, and I'm in the so. Cal area.

ABBY told me on March 18 that I would be receiving The Spirit of the Place by Samuel Shem but it never arrived. Would she want to be notified that it never arrived? ( I have no complaints, I've received others since and am delighted.) And does she want to be notified when we have put up our reviews of the ARC we got from her?
Anyone know? I don't want to bother her with questions, she must be so busy. Thanks in advance.

Loose Girl is still MIA as we know. I just felt like writing it in this thread. hehe. I can't wait to hear what happened there, a bunch of people got it a long long time ago. The rest of us are crying in the corner wondering why we got left out ;)

Edit: Apparently Loose Girl got lost with Schooled I'm so glad we hopefully will still be getting copies! Thanks Abby!

16indygo88
Aug 21, 2008, 9:10 pm

#14 -- Yes, I think Abby does like to know when books aren't received. She often follows up on books MIA, based on other posts I've seen.

And no, I don't think she needs to be notified when you write a review. I think as long as it shows up here on LT under your catalogued book, you're good.

17JGoto
Aug 22, 2008, 5:15 am

I never received Spirit of the Placeeither. Nor have I received Love Marriage. Since then I haven't been selected for anything - hopefully that has nothing to do with my missing reviews.

About a month ago I got a comment saying I would get a copy of: King of the Road. From Bergen-Belsen to the Olympic Games by Shaul Ladany. 30 days later and its still a no-show.

It was my first time getting an early-review title too!

23FranklyMyDarling
Aug 22, 2008, 11:53 am

I didn't receive my May book Traveler's Tool Kit: Mexico & Central America. Since there are no reviews posted for it, I'm assuming no one else received it either.

24tcw
Aug 22, 2008, 12:05 pm

I received "Gutter" by (remind me how to spell this name) K'wan (?), but I probably won't get to it for about a month. What can I say, i got used to not receiving books and have one or two ahead of it on my list. I do intend to read it and review it, I'm still thrilled to receive a free book, even more so because it appears to be outside of what i'd go and pick for myself to read. so ... soon. i promise.

I am generally surprised with how fast the ER books arrive -- and here I am still working my way through the third one I received, hee. But I still haven't received Inglorious and am pretty disappointed, because it's one I had been wanting to read since before I saw it in the ER batch!

I was hoping to see others with the same problem (I mean, bad for them, but comforting evidence of a slow publisher for me :P) but I guess it's just a fluke!

28rastaphrog
Aug 22, 2008, 8:02 pm

JGoto and lyncos

I think there's still a big group of us who haven't recieved Spirit Of The Place. At this point five months later, I think we should all just forget about ever getting it.

29JGoto
Aug 22, 2008, 8:48 pm

Yes, I've pretty much given up. But I feel like that book (plus the one from the following month I never got either) counts against me as reviews never written. Of course, there are lots of people applying for books, so it's not strange that I never got anything since then, but I can't help thinking that the missing reviews may be a factor.

30AStarIsBorn

Just Tell Me What to Say: Sensible Tips and Scripts for Perplexed Parents

From February. No arrival. Others seem to have gotten theirs, although very few - only an 18 book total. I don't know haw many Early Review copies that includes. Any word on why they've taken so long or forgotten to send?

At this point I'm beginning to wonder if it's even a real book.

32RachelfromSarasota
Aug 23, 2008, 7:55 pm

Don't give up hope! Abby keeps track of unreceived books -- especially if you email her after a reasonable amount of time (6 weeks or so).

I have gotten ALL my ER books pretty quickly, except for the first one (and the only one I really, really wanted!) -- Monique and the Mango Rains. I was awarded that one in June, and had totally given up on it. Then today, one day before my half-century mark, I got it in the mail, with a line apologizing for the delay. Hooray!

Edited to correct error.

36lorax
Aug 24, 2008, 8:28 pm

#29:

Abby keeps track of problem books, and not reviewing something because you never received it doesn't count against you.

(There are a LOT more people requesting books than there used to be, too; I've been lucky enough to have received every book I snagged, and of course reviewed all of them, but haven't snagged anything for months. The odds just aren't as good as they once were.)

37NovelBookworm
Aug 25, 2008, 12:15 pm

#35--I checked and my copy of the Killing Circle showed up on august 2. I'm in the Santa Clarita Valley, just 40 miles north of LA, so if you're in my area, I'd definitely drop Abby a line.

41Storeetllr
Aug 26, 2008, 2:54 pm

#38 Abby suggested I be patient for another week or two but that, if it doesn't arrive at all, it won't be held against me (for not writing a review, I guess). I hope it does arrive, though; I'll be very disappointed if it doesn't. Still, I'll get over it, and there's always the library (after it's published).

This is the second ER book I haven't received within a reasonable time period. I'm beginning to wonder if there's some sort of hex thing going on against me. Or maybe it's bad karma.

It took about three or four months for Vanished to find me. At first I thought it was because I moved, but the package didn't have any change of address indicators on it. On Good Reads, of the other two people who have the book, one is reading it now (as an LT early review) and one has it as a to-be-read, so I 'm thinking it got released to us a little late.

Still haven't seen hide nor hair of The Killing Circle or of Miami and the Siege of Chicago, which was, I think, from the April or May batch. I'm not even wondering yet about the August book not having come.

I've heard others say they got their ER books as long as 3-4 months after they won it.

If I never see them, I'll either buy them or get them from the library, and then I plan to write a review of them on my blog if not on LT (if I don't own it & it's therefore not in my library). I just don't want to be penalized for not writing an LT review if I never got the book, and I think Abby is pretty much on top of that.

Okay, this is just too cool! I won a copy of Miami and the Siege of Chicago in May. Abby told me it wouldn't arrive until mid-July due to some sort of glitch on the publisher's end. July ended and then August, and now it's into September. So, a week ago, I wrote a brief but nice email to the publisher telling them my story and asking if the book would ever be forthcoming and, if not, to please let me know so I could obtain it another way. Well, today it arrived via FedEx! I'm not sure if it would have gotten here had I not written, but it seems a bit too coincidental for that to be the case.

Well, now I've got two ER books to read and review! Better get moving! Just thought it might make everyone take heart.

I got this response from the publisher of Effigy:

Gwen,
May we have your address in order to send you a book?
Thanks.

While this fixes my problem, it certainly doesn't give me any confidence that the other 16 copies are on the way to those who snagged Effigy. I wonder if the publisher changed its mind about participating in the program. If so, I hope the other ER members aren't penalized for not reviewing the book. I know Abby keeps track of these things, so I'm sure nobody will be unfairly penalized.

#157 Booksloth ~ If I remember correctly, my book (Chicago and the Siege of Miami) came about a week after I contacted the publisher about it. (see #63 above) There was no response other than just one day the book showed up.

I think it fairly uncommon for publishers to go to the extra trouble of responding in writing.

One other thing, be sure you sent your email to the correct department. I know that the website was a bit confusing as to where the request should be sent. I think I actually sent it to the wrong department at first, but in my email I asked to be advised if it should have gone to a different dept. and, amazingly, I got a reply giving me the correct department's email address.

#160 Thanks very much for that info Storeetllr! Knowing me, it's quite possible my email is still whizzing around in the ether out there. I guess I'll just sit and wait - it's not as if I haven't got Mount TBR to wade through in the meantime. It's still a bit annoying though, because nobody forces these publishers to join the scheme and they do, presumably, benefit from the reviews. I'll certainly think twice before asking for another book from those particular publishers in future. All I'm really worried about is that Abby doesn't assume that I just didn't bother to do the review and penalisies me in future. Are we supposed to let her know about these non-appearances or does she have some kind of ESP about these things? (Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised.)

from the July books thread

Doesn't appear that anyone's received Massacre of Lithuania's Jews. Out of the six people who have cataloged it two are wish list accounts, one is the ER account, and another is the publisher.

The other two I assume are also wish lists, people who add ER books immediately after snagging them, or are extremely slow reviewers since there are still 0 reviews for the book.

If the book has already been released , but your ARC never arrived , you could check if your local library has a copy ! 190littlebookworm
Oct 28, 2008, 5:40 am

#186 - Well, the problem is the publisher hasn't held up their end of the deal. A review for a book. If they haven't sent out the book, then we shouldn't be forced to write a review. Things out of the publisher's control, like a book getting lost in the mail, is a trickier issue, but if it's been months for multiple people, I don't think they necessarily deserve the publicity.

Of course, if you wanted to read the book anyway, then obviously the library is a terrific idea, but both ends should hold up their side of the deal.

#187 & #190 - Just because the publisher screwed up doesn't mean the author shouldn't get reviewed . Remember we're here for the authors , not the publishers ! You could even mention in your review the bad handling of ARCs and advise the author to either talk to their publisher or get a new one for their next book !

Yeeesss, I know it's only been a month AND that I can no longer see my nightstand for the TBR books that are flowing off its shelf, and out of its drawer. I think that she would be prepared to send a copy to any other early reviewers who haven't received their copy (although maybe only UK-based people?).

Her blog is here: http://sueguineyblog.blogspot.com/2008/08/books-for-free.html and she's also active on facebook.

#221 - you did well then and thank you for that link.

It's been two weeks since I emailed Bluechrome and I haven't had a reply from them, thirteen weeks of waiting for the book.

I'm sorry that the author is having to take on the responsibility for this but I think I am just going to ask Abby to write my copy off now, I'm going to be just too busy over the next few weeks to commit to a book that has taken so long and with no further explanation or apology from the publisher.

No Museum of Human Beings here.

A few people have gotten theirs and reviewed it already. It's also now available at B&N and Amazon. In fact there is only one copy left on Amazon. (Yeah for author!)

Abby or Abby-substitute (as she's probably both extremely happy and exhausted with new baby!), I've got it on order from the Library, so really no need to bother the publishers. Could you take it off my list.

Just to keep track following a conversation yesterday I emailed Bluechrome again today, fifteen weeks from winning Tangled Roots and four weeks after first emailing them but receiving no reply. I've given up hope of the book arriving, I don't want it now, just hate to be ignored when I contact someone so am being a bit pushy about that more than anything else now.

I know exactly how you feel Jody! I'm in the same position re unanswered emails to Bluechrome. I've completely given up on Doggone and I won't be requesting any more Bluechrome books in the future (would rather concentrate my efforts on asking for something I might actually get). I do feel sorry for their authors but I hope they also realise how little effort their publishers are making on their behalf.

#242/243 I'm missing A Portrait of the Arsonist as a Young Man which was bluechrome. I reported it AWOL to Abby.

I found this on the bluechrome blog (don't know if this is why some of their books are not arriving?):

"One thing we did do, that in the greater scheme of things would no doubt be seen as dumb, was offer any delayed authors the chance to leave these humble shores, and a few have chosen to do so. It is a pity, but we thought it was fair to ask, and you can't argue if people take you up on the offer. No hard feelings and we wish them well. So if you were waiting for any of their books, I'm sure you will be able to find them 'Coming Soon' from other places in the very near future. I won't list them here, as that is a little unfair methinks."

I never did receive Dewey from the September batch, so I went and bought it for myself today. So much for an "early" review; I think everyone had it before I did! No Museum of Human Beings here in Maryland, either. I'd like to read and review it. But if it doesn't come I mostly just don't want the lack of a review to count against future ER requests. 249Booksloth
Dec 12, 2008, 11:50 am

Don't worry, it won't count against you as long as you let Abby know the score. I don't know when that particular book was due but I think about 3 months is long enough to have to wait. It does seem unfair to the authors but I think you should bear in mind that it is their publishers who are letting them down, not you. I reported Doggone unreceived lately but still managed to snag one this month so I know you are safe. If I ever see that one on the shelves and like the look of it I won't be put off buying it because of problems I'v had with the publisher but I certainly don't feel I should dash off and pay for a copy just because the publisher failed to deliver.

OK. Someone else in the US received Jane Eyre: The Graphic Novel three weeks ago, and it's about 7 weeks since I was told I was getting one, with nothing in sight. Is it fair to consider that a washout?

There's something this month that's right up my alley (I collect on this subject, I do scholarly work on it) and I'm hoping my chances at that aren't blown by not reviewing this one. (It's something I'll buy anyway so not a vast tragedy, but frustrating anyway.)

Sorry there was a hiccup, but hopefully the books get out to you all! I've made sure no one's been penalized for not reviewing the Gefen books.

In case you don't remember which books I'm referring to:
Dalet Amot: Halachic Perspectives

#325 bcquinnsmom, I'm not sure you should be too worried about Drood just yet. Most of the people who have it listed on here are book bloggers and got it from the publisher, not from ER, and it's not out until Feb, so you still have time to receive it!

327Kasthu
Jan 15, 2009, 10:23 am

325: Ditto on 326's response. I requested my copy directly from the publisher when I didn't snag it through ER, and I finished and reviewed it in only a couple of days. I don't think you have anything to worry about yet. But it's very, very good!

Just to restate what I have seen in a few other places, if you have not received Rocket Man you can leave a message on William Elliot Hazelgrove's page and he will get you a copy. I know there are still a few people who have not received it like myself. Hopefully one is in transit for me now.

There are two levels of Doing Something About It.

Something You Can Do:
You can mark it as not received, so it won't count against you, here:
http://www.librarything.com/er_winnings.php?program=earlyreview

You can always click the "Books you've won" link on the main Early Reviewers page to see the status of your books.

By reporting unreceived books, it also lets me know that you didn't get it.

Something I Can Do:
If it seems no one has received their copy of an ARC (which I know from your having reported it unreceived), I will contact the publisher and see what's up. As I'm just starting to work on Early Reviewers, it might take a bit before I assess which publishers we may need to bug.

At what point is it appropriate to stop updating the 'haven't received' button? I have one that's over a year old so I'm sure it's not coming. I'm willing to just leave it sit. Does that cause any problems?

567sonyagreen
Nov 13, 2009, 12:59 pm

Oh, as long as you noted it as unreceived, that's what we need to know. You don't need to update the date.

568debherter
Nov 13, 2009, 11:26 pm

Yep. I was supposed to get Bad To The Bone: Memoir of a Rebel Doggie Blogger from the October 2009 batch and never did. Ticks me off because if I don't review a book I was supposed to have received it greatly reduces my chances of ever getting another early reviewer book.

569The_Book_Queen
Nov 14, 2009, 12:43 am

Furdog--
If the book you're missing is only from October (2009)'s batch, you still have to be patient---yes, some publishers are good, and get the book sents out ASAP, while others truly can take up to two months to get all shipped out, and it's not yet 2 months after we received notifications from October's batch.

Also, if you do not recieve a book, and you click "did not receive" AFTER the 60 days, it does NOT affect your chances negatively! If you book does not arrive by the first/middle part of December, then the button should show up on your "What did I Win" list and you can set it as never received, and from there it won't count against you.

But I'm sure it will arrive- just be patient and keep your eyes open on the forum here to see if other winners have received that same book.

Enjoy!

I'm still waiting on one from the May group--"What Bothers Me Most About Christianity". I still haven't got "Plum Pudding Murder" yet, but that was from the September batch. I'm hoping it still might make it. From the looks of all the previous messages, I have a feeling the publishers of, "What Bothers Me Most..." skunked everybody.

571dulcibelle
Nov 17, 2009, 3:21 pm

Actually, Bad to the Bone by Bo Hoefinger was a September book. I'm waiting for that one as well, and as far as I can tell no one has received it yet. What's a little irritating is Kensington Publishing (Citidel is one of their imprints) is a pretty big publishing house. Seems like they could get things out a little quicker.

I'm also one of those who never received Smoke Gets in Your Eyes. I suspect the issue there may be the author instead of the publisher though. It's now listed as being available July 2010. Wonder if those of us who "won" it will still be on the list then.

572tardis
Nov 17, 2009, 4:29 pm

571> JULY 2010!!?? yikes. Last time I checked it was August 2009. Has to be an author problem. If we ever do get it, I really wonder if it will be worth the wait?

What Bothers me Most About Christianity still MIA from the May batch. Can we get a cut-off where if the book isn't received by, say, 6 months after the fact, it just disappears from our "received" list? I'd like to be able to stop hitting the, "I still have not received this book" link; it's just getting silly at this point. (wanders off looking for the site suggestions thread)

Also MIA is Plum Pudding Murder from the September batch. So far, I've won 4 books--1 has arrived, 2 missing in action and number 4 is still recent.

#583 and #584 -

I've yet to receive Matchless, too. But, considering it is from Harper Collins William Morrow Imprint, the same publisher of Fool (which I never received), I'm no longer chalking it up to lost mail, and instead becoming a bit peeved at that publisher. To promise a book and not deliver, when the readers are then promising reviews (which I post on here, my blog, amazon, and facebook), is bad business.

583-585 Me either... I doubt anyone ever got Matchless. I'm sorry to hear that you had the same issue with another book by them. I'm a big Gregory Maguire fan and would have bought this one (in spite of not being thrilled with his last book). Just for curiosity, do winners of ER books and MG books ever send a note to acknowledge receipt of the books they receive? There don't seem to be monthly unreceived threads. I don't know if this is for a particular reason, but I'd think it would be helpful -- anyone who's been around longer than I have on ER want to chime in?

As your ER fairy, I'd find month-based threads much easier to sift through.

670DevourerOfBooks
Mar 29, 2010, 7:55 pm

Sometimes there are, and sometimes there aren't, it seems to depend on whether or not anyone happens to start one. There probably wasn't already a February thread because it hasn't been all that long, it is just about time for one to be started by someone who is anxious about their book.
