Short biography
Alexander Pushkin was born into a poor but distinguished aristocratic family. His nobleman father was active in politics, following a 600-year tradition in his family. His maternal great-grandfather, Abram/Ibrahim Petrov (later Hannibal), was a North African from the area of Eritrea who had been kidnapped as a child and taken to Constantinople as a slave. Abram was brought to Russia on the orders of Tsar Peter the Great, who became his godfather and made him his personal valet and secretary and later a military officer. Pushkin was educated mostly at home and began writing poetry when he was very young – he published his first poem at age 14. He took up writing as a career and was Russia's first professional poet. After 1830, he wrote less poetry and began to focus on the short story form. Many of his works are the basis for other famous literary and musical efforts, including the operas Boris Godunov and Eugene Onegin. In 1831, Pushkin married Natalya Goncharova and the couple had three children, though they were not happy together. Natalya was beautiful and Pushkin thought she encouraged the attentions of other men. He frequently thought himself dishonored and fought dozens of duels, one of which killed him in 1837. His death was considered a great loss to Russian literature.

First person account of a young man coming of age and finding/rescuing his love. Pushkin uses the story to relate the history of a rebellion in Tsarist Russia. This edition comes with many footnotes to provide historical context. If one is unfamiliar (as I am) with this history, the story itself is a decent romantic tale but it is the inclusion of the larger context---very skillfully done here---that makes this special

The Falen translation of Pushkin’s “novel in verse” masterpiece really drew me in and was a very enjoyable read. Falen remains true to the original Russian rhyme and metre scheme and adds an excellent introduction and annotations. There is much to be appreciated here; the excitement and splendor of 18th century aristocratic Russia, contrasted with Onegin’s boredom and ennui, his “spleen”; a timeless story of love, rejection, loss, guilt; and Pushkin’s allusions to his development as an artist, a transition from poet to prose writer.

And scorning then Apollo’s ire
To humble prose I’ll bend my lyre:
A novel in the older vein
Will claim what happy days remain.

While the illustrations are lovely, as all of Gennady Spirin's works are, the story line is very hapzardly poor, both in structure and plot.

The plot contains fairytale like happenings, yet it seemed all over the place, understandable. I don't even know how to write the review.

Three sisters expressed their wishes. One wanted to become the Tsar's wife so there could be a magnificent feast
Sister #2 would spin the best linen for everyone
Sister #3 wanted to become the tsarina and have a strong and brave son.

Tsar Saltan hears the wishes and was captivated by the wish of Sister #3. He wanted to marry her, but not take her away from her other sisters. So, one would be the cook, the other a weaver at his court. This terribly annoyed the other two sisters. The wedding took place and the youngest sister knew she was pregnant and her wish would be fulfilled.

The Tsar went away for a long time and left the sisters together with the Tsar's cousin. This trio made plans to destroy the Tsarina. They mad an announcement that the baby was born and it was a monster. The Tsar took the news well and said he would judge for himself on his return.

This message was intercepted and another in its place said "Drown the tsarina and her child deep in the sea." Following the orders, both the baby and the Tsarina were placed in a wooded keg and taken out to sea.

The barrel opened, the baby now a boy saw a swan attached by a hawk. The swan rewarded him for saving her and promised all his wishes would come true.

The boy prince became a knat and stung one of the sisters. Hereafter, the plot unravels. The knat becomes a fly. The fly becomes a wasp.

In the end, the son is grow, becomes a prince. He forgave the two sisters and his cousin but they could never be in the presence of the swan

They all lived happily ever after.

Yikes, I don't even know if what I wrote captured the essence of this multifaceted story.

It is not a story that is worthy of the beautiful artistry of Gennady Spirin.

No Stars for this tale.
