Combining/Separating (Please Fix This Book!) Request Thread #45

**Please read as there have been modifications**
_________________________________________

This thread is for LT’ers or thingamabrarians, or members, or their designees, to post combining or separating problems with their books.

** If a book has been combined with a book that is extremely different from the original.
** If a book won’t combine with the other books just like it.
** There is a problem with the entry & it is just too overwhelming to deal with.

________________________________________

WHEN YOU POST:

Give us the TITLE & author, plus any other information you think we might need & please NUMBER them if you post more than one.

Example:
..Please combine:

#1: The story of the life of you
http://www.librarything.com/work/XXXXXX
http://www.librarything.com/work/YYYYYYYY

#2: The story of the life of everyone else
http://www.librarything.com/work/WWWWW
http://www.librarything.com/work/ZZZZZZZZ

** Please do not give us search pages or author pages.
Give us concrete & specific works to be combined, not groups of possibles, unless you have questions. Series pages can be helpful.

** You can ask us to look at a set of works to ask our opinions or ask if someone with a specific language or subject knowledge look at your request, but please be brief.

** Make your request easy for yourself & for the combiners who will help you.

Then you can just wait, “and someone will be with you shortly.”
Please, keep in mind this work is done by volunteers, not LT staff.

*** If you number multiple requests, it makes it easier if someone can only work on part of a request.

*** If you edit your post to add new items to be combined, please indicate that they are new by preceding with “ETA:” or “Edit:”.

*** Also, please indicate when a request has been "DONE".
________________________________________

Tim’s Guidelines for Proper Etiquette for contacting members about their book records:

“For this topic, I still feel strongly that I’d like to consider it bad form. Many others agree with me. But a few think I’m dictating and are angry about that. So, fine. Let’s just write some guidelines up. I propose that the guidelines be something along the lines of:

* Remember that LibraryThing is used for many different reasons. The way you use and enjoy the site is not necessarily the way others do.
* Be sensitive to how the member is using LibraryThing. Approach members who show no interest in the social side more cautiously.
* Try to provide helpful information and ask questions rather than dictating.
* If the user indicates displeasure at the request, let it drop.
* When in doubt, raise the issue in the Combiners! group before sending a message.”

________________________________________

Skittles’ note: I would like to add that we should ALWAYS use private comment when we absolutely must contact a LT’er, even when their response isn’t private.
_______________________________________

Dr Mike’s (aka theapparatus) note:

If both works that need to be combine have more than 200 records, please post your request in this thread:

http://www.librarything.com/topic/95602

You need staff intervention to handle that request.
________________________________________

When this thread reaches approximately 200 posts, DO NOT POST HERE, but go to thread #45. This thread will be easier to handle if we keep it under 200 (faster loading). Please copy any notes or instructions to the new thread. Thank you.

Feel free to add comments &/or suggestions ... not just “challenges.”

** There is also a Combiner’s Group Information, FAQ & Discussion Thread #2 at: http://www.librarything.com/topic/57164 . That thread is for combining information, discussion in general, not for problems ... .

** The wiki page is here: http://www.librarything.com/wiki/index.php/Book_combining

For 2.3 the default cover displayed cannot be authoritatively changed, but you can select or upload the one you want to see when looking at the work in your catalogue, if enough people move to a "good" cover the irrelevant one will eventually cease to be the default.
Here after recalculating the current default cover has shifted to a correct one, but of the german edition since it has the most copies listed.

For some reason Swift's Gulliver' Travels--some 11k copies are on the page of Paul Turner http://www.librarything.com/combine.php?author=turnerpaul

12jasbro
Dec 6, 2011, 10:11 pm

> 11: Confusing at first, yes; but it actually looks OK to me. The key? Click "go to work" for Gulliver' Travels on the "Combine works: Paul Turner" page, then click "other authors" where it says "Other authors: See the other authors section." There, Paul Turner's confirmed as Editor and secondary author of some editions, but the Work is still clearly attributed to Swift. (Remember seeing that on clicking "go to work"?) If you have other questions, please ask; thanks.

theapparatus has me blocked but maybe someone else can explain to me what this means. To have Nat Geo in their database is to have it in their LT catalog? And what does that have to do with whether they should be combined or not?

48AnnaClaire
Dec 10, 2011, 11:29 pm

Exactly. They should be combined with other copies of the same issue -- but not necessarily with each other.

>47 jjwilson61:,48

I think that is what 46 means -- that these need to go combined into the proper issues.
Yikes - 244? That will take a while...

PS: What it has to do with people having or not having NG is a different story - probably means that it will be easier for someone that have them. Don't see how but cannot decipher it in another way.

PS2: And I left a message to the user - he has review of '' in every single one of those - looks like a weird import.

@jjwilson61 no I blocked you because you have made multiple bigoted statements at me and others here. As I and others have explained to you multiple times as you have continued to harass me.

Just like you just did in that post by getting my gender wrong.

I flagged you again for whatever it's worth but I know Tim won't do anything about it.

I pointed out the Nation Geographic to have individual issues combined. Not to have them all combined into a single record.

Excuse me for the confusion. It was one of those "My time is very short" posts and I had to move on.

55timspalding
Edited: Dec 11, 2011, 8:22 pm

A few comments, since I was asked to look at this:

1. Except in rare cases, Jeremy, Abby and I only react to situations brought before us explicitly. That is, if you want something done about a post, you have to complain. We often read that we're "ignoring" something and smile. That's literally so because we aren't out there reading thousands of posts every day. What do you expect?!

2. If you want personal replies from me about a problem, please ensure that you have comments turned on, or send me your email so I can write back.

3. I can't judge statements like "No. theapparatus decided a while back that I said something that was personally insulting to her and blocked me." I have no idea if it's an accurate representation of the history, and it's not clearly an attack without that background. Further, it would get me involved in a dispute in a way I won't do. Personal attacks covered by the TOS are generally obvious—you're a pig! fuck you! and so forth. To get into who said what to whom and what they meant by it is beyond me, and would lead to all sorts of bad calls.

4. Come on people now, smile on your brother. Everybody get together, try and love one another right now.

Getting someone's gender wrong is not being bigoted or harassing people -- I honestly do not remember the gender of half the people I deal with here in LT... and for some I am not sure I ever knew this information.

57jjwilson61

I did look at the's profile and the only thing that hints at a gender is the profile picture which is Kim Possible. So, if you want people to get your gender right, put it in your profile.

Exactly. I've long since lost track of how many times people get mine wrong, online or in person. The only time I bother to correct people is if their error indicative of a more generalized cluelessness -- like if they assume I must be male because I have a wife. But I certainly don't see it as an insult.

There are a lot of ways to skin a cat...
The approach in 97 is one way :)

Adding and deleting a book will leave a 0-copy work:)So yes - it can work but has a side effect.

And nothing is unfixable - so try - if you make a mess, post back here and someone will help you fix it. :)

OK, I'll "fiddle" but please give me an approach for works without authors. One approach I just though of was to create a dummy Work exactly like the Non-author work, with a secondary author, combine these etc.

Seems like a lot of work!

103SimoneA
Dec 15, 2011, 3:29 am

#100 is done. In this case, I added Thornton Freeland as an other author to all works and combined them on his author page. A placeholder would probably also work, but maybe you will create a nonsense author page, so I prefer to use an actual author. And there are of course other ways to do this, but this works well for me.

>102 guido47:
Isn't that method unnecessary now? You can simply add other authors on the main work page. That's what I've been doing, and it works charmingly.

Just stumbled onto that "main work page, add another author", an hour ago.

All seems to be stumble, stub toe, stumble...

Bloody DVD adders who don't look up and use directors as authors.
Oh wait, that was me yesterday.

Just a thought. Should I keep asking questions on this thread, which is designed to solve specific problems, or go somewhere else? Where though?

Guido.

> #105: @guido47: This is our "Please Fix This Book!" request thread, and each continuation starts with guidelines similar #1 (above) including more info referenced at "Combiner's Group Information, FAQ & Discussion Thread #2," http://www.librarything.com/topic/57164 .

With these notes in mind, anything that helps us with Work combinations is fair game, and learning about stubbed toes is part of the process. (I can be gracious on this point, 'cause I don't keep the wet noodles or administer the dungeons.) If an off-topic discussion threatens to derail our primary purpose, it's best to start a new thread, and maybe post its URL here.

I did this once myself for the LOTR books: http://www.librarything.com/topic/64126 ; and another Member tried to help too: http://www.librarything.com/topic/94222 . (Unfortunately, we've got a ways to go before LOTR will be in any kind of order.)

Take a look at these resources, let us know of other questions, and keep those "Please Fix This Book!" requests coming.

Thank you!

guido,

No offense but if you do not know what are you doing, why someone would give you a method that will allow you to bypass some of the checks the site had put in place to stop people from making mistakes that will take hours to clean?

What we are trying to tell you is that there are ways to do it and we are happy to help but we are not handing it to people that still do not understand how the system works. Cleaning after that is a pain and there is no way to "un-tell" you.

Make sense?

With this being said - if someone decides to hand you the information, it is up to them. I personally wait to see people doing all they can using the standard methods before going and passing it around. Call it a precaution if you want...

Except in rare cases, Jeremy, Abby and I only react to situations brought before us explicitly. That is, if you want something done about a post, you have to complain. We often read that we're "ignoring" something and smile. That's literally so because we aren't out there reading thousands of posts every day. What do you expect?!

=============================================

What I would expect is that, if you are going to maintain these forums, you reasonably police them. If I owned an empty lot and gangs regularly used it as a gathering point, a base of attack to mug anyone who wandered by, I would be personally legally liable. It wouldn't do for me to say "Hey, I'm busy, can't bother to police my property. Let someone else take care of it." You can't legally turn a blind eye to what is being done on and with your property.

Now due to our mutual anonymity and the first amendment, the same legal standard does not apply here. However, the same social dynamics applies. You let people do whatever they want with no effective rules and no enforcement of the rules that exist and you get pages long rants by nazis (as you have recently had) and persistent abuse by the irrational and just plain assholes of everyone else - the everyone else who want to have a rational conversation.

But that is apparently what you want, since you don't have the time.......

112jjwilson61
Dec 16, 2011, 12:31 pm

111> You're perfectly free to create your own discussion group and invite those who you think want to have a rational conversation. Good luck with that.

I don't know why you think Tim is obligated to provide you with a certain type of forum. You must like something about it since you keep posting here.
