This thread is for LT'ers or thingamabrarians, or members, or their designees, to post combining or separating problems with their books.
**If a book has been combined with a book that is extremely different from the original.
**If a book won't combine with the other books just like it.
**There is a problem with the entry & it is just too overwhelming to deal with.
________________________________________...
It has been suggested many times that there be a single thread for LT'ers to post combining & separating problems so that;
** they can learn how to do it
** they can get help when needed
** just want someone else to do it (usually, they can't understand how to do it... which is normal... or don't have the time)
**and finally, those LT'ers who "enjoy" combining can have a place to look to first to see what fun can be had helping LT be the best place to catalog books.

WHEN YOU POST:
Please give us HYPERLINKS or URLs, not touchstones. Hyperlinks to the pages where the problems exist are much more accurate than a touchstone when there is a problem.
Give us the title & author, plus any other information you think we might need.
Then you can just wait, "and someone will be with you shortly."

"For this topic, I still feel strongly that I'd like to consider it bad form. Many others agree with me. But a few thing I'm dictating and are angry about that. So, fine. Let's just write some guidelines up. I propose that the guidelines be something along the lines of:
*Remember that LibraryThing is used for many different reasons. The way you use and enjoy the site is not necessarily the way others do.
*Be sensitive to how the member is using LibraryThing. Approach members who show no interest in the social side more cautiously.
*Try to provide helpful information and ask questions rather than dictating.
*If the user indicates displeasure at the request, let it drop.
*When in doubt, raise the issue in the Combiners! group before sending a message."

Skittles' note: I would like to add that we should ALWAYS use private comment when we absolutely must contact a LT'er, even when their response isn't private.
and yes, this thread is similar to putting all of our problems together for people to see & say, "oh, no!! LT isn't perfect!!" or "Look at all of the problems that LT has." That isn't the case here. This is a place to gather "challenges" together to make it easier & faster to "fix" them. Let's just remember that "bad" data comes from people... people who make mistakes.. WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES! (ok, there are a couple of perfect people around here) Instead of complaining about the problem, let's fix it.

The last thread hit 210 posts today, so I started a new one so that I can post my request...
http://www.librarything.com/author/griffith
There are at least 10 authors represented by that name, several are actually Griffiths. As far as I can tell, most of the works are in the LT system under the proper name, but they aren't combined and don't show up on the Editions page. I'm not sure of how to get them combined properly - I tried it with Bill Griffith's, and the book just stayed on the split author's page instead of moving to the appropriate one.
I did do some googling when I split it just now, so the disambig notice has each name (first and last, since some are Griffiths and not Griffith) and at least one title, to hopefully help figuring out combinations.

I copied this one over from the last thread. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out how to get these to combine.
Can someone combine GURPS Module Prime Alpha and GURPS Module Prime Alpha by Stephen V. Cole, both ISBN 1585640344? Thanks.

I was able to combine the Patricia Griffith and Michael Griffiths ones onto the correct page, because there were copies in each case with the correct name. The Bill Griffith one you tried looks evenly balanced at the moment: it looks like adding another copy would probably tilt the balance to the correct name.

skittles, is there any way you can give me a blow-by-blow of how you did that? I've stumbled on a way to discover thousands of these, and I'd much rather deal with them myself than post them one at a time on here.

magic!
Edited to add: and a lot of experience.
Keep combining where you can & post on this thread what you can't.... eventually, you'll find some of the different ways there are to combine hard-to-combine works.
There are so many 'strategies' and 'consensuses' (what is the plural of consensus? is there a plurality of consensus? would we be able to agree on it?) to combining works that takes time to maneuver the rapidly changing & rock-filled waters.
Good Luck & Welcome to the Combiners' Group.
Have you gotten your OCD/CDO vaccine yet?

BogAl, if you want to experiment a bit, this is one version of how to combine two editions of a work with different authors:
1. Click on the Editions page of the first work, and copy one edition line
2. Click on the Manual Entry link from the Add books page
3. Paste the copied information into the correct boxes, and save
4. If all goes well, this will autocombine with the first work
5. Now edit the author line, putting in the second author's name, and save
6. This should temporarily move the work to the second author's page, dragging all the other copies with it, so click on the second author's name
7. Use the combine/separate link on that author's page to combine the two works
8. Delete your temporary copy of the work.
(It may sound complicated but actually doesn't take long).
If one of the editions has no author, start with it at step 1. You can tell at step 4 if your temporary work has autocombined by checking whether it show up belonging to other members. At step 5, as well as adding the other author's name, put a c or other letter on the end of the work title. This makes it less likely that the no-author copy will fall away at the next step and not combine after all (I've no idea why!).
I hope that helps!

And on a different note, I went through and combined the various Dina Matty & co. authors under one page (http://www.librarything.com/author/mattydina), in order to combine all the various editions of the three works. Keft Burdell (Keet is a mis-spelling) does not have any other books listed on LT by herself, but Mark Richardson does (http://www.librarything.com/author/markrichardson&norefer=1 and http://www.librarything.com/author/richardsonmark&norefer=1).
Now that the works are all combined nicely, should I leave the authors all mashed up, or try to seperate the Dina Matty alone from the Dina and Keft from the Dina and Mark?

single authors should never be left combined with multiple authors, so I've separated those out.

I looked at the Peter Cameron author page and thought I might be able to assign the "unknowns" to several of the authors.
http://www.librarything.com/author/cameronpeter
However there is one with no title and the cover is a picture of a man. What do we do with that one?
Also am I correct in that the CD of a title is combined with the book?
Could someone look at this author?
Thanks.

The no title one http://www.librarything.com/work/8891426 seems to be a a case where someone is misusing the system a bit by storing author photos as works. (It's a private library and the tags are in Italian). I vaguey remember Tim making a comment on this in some thread - maybe you could drop him a line and point it out.
Edited to add - if the CDs are a complete and unabridged audio version of a book, then they should be combined with the book.

I've combined them: the work is now at http://www.librarything.com/work/3167309.
The method I used was that in post #10: pasting the work details into manual entry, saving, then adding the author name and combining from the author page.
It doesn't always succeed when the work has no author: the work you're trying to bring with the temporary copy can fall away and leave you back where you started. Making sure to change the title when adding the author name helps (as in the post above, adding a letter to the end of the name). Even if it doesn't come through the first time, deleting the failed attempt and trying again will usually succeed.

I'm struggling with a two volume set – Dave Jacke's “Edible Forest Gardens”.
There are two separate books,
Edible Forest Gardens – Volume One: Vision & Theory (ISBN 1931498792) which has a blue band on the cover, and
Edible Forest Gardens – Volume Two: Design & Practice (ISBN 1931498806) which has a red/brown band on the cover.
I know they're usually bought as a set, but they are two different books, with different ISBNs. But they're so tangled I don't know how to go about untangling them.
Help?

Done. That wasn't bad at all, very few editions.
There are also a number of people who have entered the set, with ISBN 1890132608.
This will almost certainly recur, because there are people who use just the title "Edible Forest Gardens" without subtitle or volume information with all three ISBNs. I'll add a disambiguation notice, which should at least slow them down.

Yes I know someone has probably posted a message somewhere on how to combine works that don't share authors and don't show up on the editions page, but it's quicker for me to just post my request here and let some other OCD person fix it. They'll probably fix it with fewer mistakes than I would! Thanks all!

Re 42: You know both of those work records have the same ISBN but yet when you pull up Editions -> Potential work combinations, they're not listed. You would think that would be the first thing checked. Pity that it's not. Would make life a lot easier I would think doing these.

#17: (http://www.librarything.com/series/Snapshot%20Picture%20Library%20Series) which may or may not qualify as a legit LT series, since it is a publisher's series.
Question for the rest of you - I've been creating Series pages for Publisher series. In particular, Taunton Press has "Pros for Pros" and the like. As a consumer, I'd like to know what other titles have been published in the set, and, surprisingly, the publisher's website doesn't unite them. Is this a legitimate function of the Series feature?
As a former librarian, I know that many childrens issues - science, social studies, etc. are in publisher series.

@2wonderY, we're currently having this discussion elsewhere about what a series is:
http://www.librarything.com/topic/95059
http://www.librarything.com/topic/95059
47jjwilson61
But the short answer is that there isn't anything wrong with publisher's series per se. It's just when they include books that aren't unique to that publisher (or maybe it would be clearer to say books that aren't unique to that series). So a Great Works series put out by some publisher including Little Women and Moby Dick can't be a series in LT because the series would show up on the series page of someone who had editions of those books that aren't in that Great Works series.

#56: Two separate editions, but are they two separate works? Amazon is showing the same cover on both, the same as the member covers for 4210583. The used one is so expensive because it's an import, and because some Amazon sellers seem to massively overprice everything hoping for a hit.

Not to be anal about it but even with a 50 page count difference?
60masterdeski
>59 theapparatus: I have no idea where the extra 50 pages come from, but as far as I can tell, both on Amazon and LT, these are the same book, just different editions. But, as I do not actually have the "Import" book in my hands to compare with my copy of the other, I can't say for certain.

Subjects aren't very reliable. There are often subjects included that are just wrong.
What worries me more is Possession (Star Trek) listed as a possible combination. Only one person put the author, Byatt, in the tags, so I don't think you have enough to say those two works are the same.

Have a look at the books tagged 'broken subject headings' at http://www.librarything.com/tag/broken+subject+headings and you'll see lots of examples of books with incorrect subject headings. I have a copy of Possession but I missed that 'Sports' subject and hadn't tagged it.
edited to add: I agree with jjwilson61 - with no author, no ISBN, no publisher details, and a one-word title, I don't think there's enough information there to identify the work. The 7 copies that aren't tagged A. S. Byatt could be any of the 15 or so works which are showing up as possible touchstones for Possession.

Here's a quick project for somebody:
I recently separated a few versions of "Violet Goes to the Country" from "Violet Comes to Stay." Now I can't get the separated editions of "Violet Goes to the Country" to combine with the main entry.

These are all the same work, despite variations on the title and author. Jan Karon wrote about Cynthia Coppersmith, a fictional children's book author, and then when Karon's adult works became popular enough, she worked with Melanie Cecka, who wrote actual versions of the fictional children's books mentioned in the adult books. "Violet Goes to the Country" is the second book in the children's book series. Confusion, anyone?

I agree it is most likely that the 7 copies attached to that version of Possession are not actually all the same book. They're possibly even seven different books.
But can anything be done in those cases or do we just leave them? Wasn't sure if there was a per-copy view I just wasn't familiar with.

94> I was going to suggest that the book with the author tag be separated out and combined with the right book, but I don't believe that editions can be separated. I think that all books that have the same title, author, and ISBN (even if the author and ISBN are blank) are doomed to be bound together. You could try leaving a polite note for the person with the tags on their copy to add the author as well, in which case it can be combined and it may auto-combine.
97stortemelk
> 95 Hoi Connie, the two works were properly seperated already (from your request in the other thread, I think), but one of the CK items you added was canonical title/gangbare titel for the Dutch domain, which made for 'zonder een woord' to still appear as 'dicht bij huis'. I fixed that.
As for the rest of the CK: that wasn't fixed by separating the works (never is, unfortunately). It will have to be done manually; probably best by you, as you have copies of both books and will be able to tell what belongs where :-)

1) The only book on the Guerin page is by Daniel Guerin, so no, they shouldn't be combined.
2) The books are separated, but the work title hasn't caught up. I would suggest keeping an eye on it for a few days, and bring it up again if it doesn't fix itself.
You have several more books that need separating in your 'work multiples'. (although most of them look correct.) To find that page start at your home page or profile and click on the link for Statistics/Memes. Right at the top in Library statistics you will find the link.

If you feel like taking a second step, the editor should be Tadashi Ehara for all of those.
Thanks,

When I looked at the books of Sir Walter Scott and I found this strange work which may be Ivanhoe:
http://www.librarything.com/work/5129286
This is the last work on the combine page which includes other authors like Scott Turow:
http://www.librarything.com/combine.php?author=scottsirwalter
Also there is a title missing at the top of the page which is probably Scott Walter.
Some Sir Walter Scott's are on the Scott Walter page.

Could someone look at these 2 problems?
Thanks.
Edited to add missing sentence.

I'm not 100% sure that the Greek title means Ivanhoe, but if not, it translitterates to something darn close.
According to Google translate
Пират means "pirate", Сэнт-ронанские воды is "St. Ronan's well", and the japanese book has something to do with web design. I separated them, and the zero-copy "Jack Scott" book, but did not combine.

I'm pretty sure this book:
http://www.librarything.com/work/9502404/book/55949850
is an Italian book that both has a mispelled titled ("Luter") and was written by someone other than Martin Luther King (Jr. or Sr.).
Furthermore, the MLK author has more general problems. It seems that it's both supposed to be a multiple author (Jr. and Sr.), and yet all the CK information is for Jr. There is only one book in it by Sr.:
http://www.librarything.com/work/9447582
FYI, exactly how the Canonical Name should be formatted is being discussed here:
http://www.librarything.com/topic/96101
so leave that one alone for now.
Gracias.

About MLK. First of all, I don't think those Martin Luther King w/o Jr. or Sr. should be combined with MLK Jr. But maybe there's a case if an overwhelming number of books without the Jr./Sr. are for Jr. Convince me.
Second, if they are kept together, it's ok for the CK to be about just Jr. because people nearly always mean Jr. when they don't specify. (That's the Shakespeare Rule for CK). I'm not sure, however, that the Canonical Name should have been set to Jr., though.

There are 3 Martin Luther Kings:
King, Martin Luther, $d 1899-1984 (LC 80078476)
He is the father of Jr and wrote one major work: Daddy King. Also published some religious works
King, Martin Luther, $c Jr., $d 1929-1968 (LC 79084324)
King, Martin Luther, $c III (LC 00061618)
Son of Jr and worked on soundtrack of The dream lives. Also known as Marty King
The reason all come together is the system only reads the main heading and does not take into account the other fields when importing from a library.
No question that that MLK Jr. wrote most of the materials in LT.
It won't be easy to get material under the right MLK.

I've spent probably three hours trying to clean up National Geographic from 1978-1980. Honestly Tim, the roundabout ways of combining are maddening! Will there ever be a way to combine by entering work numbers?
I found a pair of magazines, one listed with editor, the other listed with unknown.

I bought a while ago The Count of Monte Christo, old finnish edition. It's published in four parts in years 1911-1912 and I had to add it by hand.

It won't combine and I don't know how it chould?
I also wonder how to combine some book club editions that are in some cases split in two separate books.
I once had Clavell's Shogun in two parts, I wonder how that would have behaved? Maybe it would have been more reasonable just add it as one book?
Help please?

A book that is part of a work is not the same as a book that is a portion of a work, so they should not be combined. Tim is working on a Relationships feature that will handle this situation though.

119> So you're saying that the jr's and sr's should be split off of the MLK page to their own pages?
124fdholt

The MLK page appears to be mostly Jr. Problem is that senior wrote as MLK and that pulls his books to his son's page.
Don't know a way around this. I think most have the MLK Jr. so it might be unfair to split.

124> For now, we split common-name authors on their combined page, and look forward to a future ability to distinguish further by separating them to their own respective pages. :0)
Otherise, I doubt either Daddy King or MLK Jr. would worry overly much about being lumped together; and I wish Marty and his siblings all the best. ('Nuff said.)

But Martin Luther King and Martin Luther King Jr. aren't the same name but someone has combined them into one.
Yes, the page canonically titled Jr. Martin Luther King is actually the plain Martin Luther King page from the address http://www.librarything.com/author/kingmartinluther. It appears to include two other Martin Luther King pages and a Martin L. King page on the one hand, and about ten pages which include some form of Junior or Doctor in the title. But it results in Martin Luther King Sr. appearing on a Junior page, where he definitely doesn't belong.
My understanding of the present agreed practice is that all the more specific Jr. and Dr. pages should be separated off this page and recombined into a specifically Martin Luther King, Jr. page; this page should be canonically retitled plain Martin Luther King (as it really is) and the split into two (or three) kept; and disambiguation notices added to both pages.
But I'd rather leave that for the Americans here to decide: if people want to make an exception in this case I'm not going to presume to interfere.

I see one book, with two copies, by King Sr. on that page.
Given that Jr. is overwhelmingly more known, and overwhelmingly who Americans mean when they say "MLK" (and how common it is to leave off the "Jr"), I'd say that in this case, leaving them combined is the better course of action. It would be easier to suggest to the holders of the "Daddy King" book that they add "Sr" to his name and then separate that out than to try to keep the "MLK" (which is overwhelmingly actually Jr.) separate from the Jr.
If there was an obscure modern author named Charles Dikens, and 99% of books with that spelling actually belonged to Dickens, I'd be in favor of keeping them combined-but-split, too. Sometimes real-world usage has to prevail over the rules.

Funny you should mention Dickens. There are 4:
1719-1793, the Vicar of Hemingford Grey who writes sermons and other religious books
1837-1896, compiler of books about his father
1916-1972, bass player who goes by the name of Doles Dickens
and
1812-1870, "our" Dickens
There may be more in OCLC that do not have authority records.
The Dikens is an alternate spelling used by LC authorities for 1812-1870.
Our page lists #1 as 1812-1870, #2 is junior, #3 is a Charles Spencer Hart. I don't even want to think about all the books that are "unknown" on that page.

135> I took care of it. Here's how I did it, which I'm pretty sure is the "right" way:
1) Manually added a book to my library with title "Romeo and 2 Juliets" and a blank author. I also added the same ISBN 0553541803 as in the blank author work, though I think that was probably unnecessary.
2) Verified that this newly added book got auto-combined with your blank author one.
3) Edited my book record to put the correct author name in it.
4) Went to the combine page for my book and now it suggested the second work you linked to. Chose that work and combined it with it.
5) Verified that the work now had both of the previous works combined together.
6) Deleted the book from my library.

Doh, I was trying to explain it so you could follow it. Please do tell me which part was muddy and I'll endeavor to clarify it posthaste! :D
Okay, onto the example in #137.
For this one, I did almost the exact same thing.
1) I manually added a book to my library with title "Elizabeth's Super-selling Lemonade (Sweet Valley Kids)" and author "Stewart, Molly Mia".
2) I clicked on the book I just added and clicked Edit book.
3) I changed the author name to "Pascal, Francine" and clicked Save.
4) I clicked Editions. It now said:
Potential work combinations
(combine/separate potentials)
Elizabeth's Super-Selling Lemonade by Francine Pascal (9 copies)
5) I clicked on (combine/separate potentials)
6) Put a check mark next to both works and clicked the Combine Works button and then the Combine button on the next page to confirm.
That was it, now they are combined. Since I'm done, I deleted my copy from my library.
Does that help at all? Basically, the way you get around the mismatched authors is by adding a book to your library with the incorrect author. Then you edit your book to give it the right author. That makes the "Potential work combinations" list the suggestion your wanted in the first place.

I have found some books that have the same problem as in post #135, i.e., somebody's copy of this book has no author, ISBN, or any other info for some reason, and thus, I can't combine it via normal methods. I know little about Andre Norton, but just looking at the book list for the "Andre" author, it looks like what you're talking about:

128> EveleenM: I tried separating out all the MLK Jr's to recombine on a discrete page including the suffix. Unfortunately, I got down to nothing left but the photos, but couldn't figure out how to migrate those without losing something or leaving it behind in an "orhphaned" author listing. So I put it all back together, as best I could -- leaving off the "MLK Day Commission," the "Arkansas Memorial" (at least I think that's what it was), and something called "Pueblo MLK" (maybe from Pueblo, CO?) Perhaps somebody else knows how to migrate photos, or maybe this is a job for ... LIBRARYTHING STAFF!!!
In any case, all properly entered (i.e., not "Jr.") copies of Daddy King: An Autobiography are combined to a separate page for MLK (sen), out of deference to the existing page's takeover for Daddy King's son; and, to my knowledge, none of the other books catalogued on the author page currently devoted to MLK Jr. are by either Daddy King or Marty (MLK III). Seriously, is this something LibraryThing Staff can help us manipulate to get it straight?
On another front, I understand that we don't necessarily want to combine "R. Skloot" with Rebecca, since there's also a Robert Skloot out there. Does that same logic apply if all titles on a "Martin Luther King" or "Martin L. King" page are, in fact, by MLK Jr?
I'm not meaningto hijack the"Please Fix This Book" thread to talk about Author combinations; but the subject arose, and I'm not sure where else t carry it; maybe a separate thread on the Combiners Group? Thanks for your thoughts.

139> I've had good success using an on-line translator; see my prior post on point at http://www.librarything.com/topic/92822#2070883. Also, if you're using IE8 for your browser, the drop-down menu under "Page" (upper, right corner on my screen) includes Google Translate, which I've not yet tried for LT but have had some good results with on other websites. Just some thoughts; I'd welcome other suggestions, but I'm sure nothing beats knowing another language -- except knowing both the language AND the book!

we are the LT staff for these things... it is up to us to keep things as clear as possible.
All the data is not clean, clear, precise or correct.. and we have to deal with it.
What I want a book to look like in my library/book listing is different than what you want your same book to look like. I may want Mark Twain as the author, you may want Sammy Clemens! Someone else may not even care who is listed as author as long as their tags says what shelf it is on.
yes, feel free to start an authors combining/separating/problems thread. Make the second post about the MLK author pageS & we can get started on it.
I'd help right now but brain is fried!! almost literally. very tired & not worth much...
Suggestion: have the person proposing the problem give the link to ALL pages they want dealt with, not link to search page with names, but the pages... of course there may be more than those posted, but it gives a start.

Lorax, in post 131 convinced me that the MLK Jr. page isn't a problem and I thought that was the last word. Before you start disassembling it perhaps you should determine if anyone else agrees.

Please can someone combine a number of books for me. Each book has four/five authors plus as editor which is why they've not auto-combined. There's about 20 works, which need to be combined into about 6 different works. Rather than me paste all the URLs here, you can access them very easily from this page, and it's very easy to spot what should be combined:

#161, jasbro
Like jjwilson61's in #164, I was convinced that lorax's view in #131 looks very sensible. The one thing I wonder is whether the 'Jr.' in the canonical name would be better removed:
1. The majority of the works are under the name 'Martin Luther King' anyway.
2. Removing it would remove the sticking point of Daddy King being wrongly attributed to 'Jr.'
3. It seems to be impossible to get the name to show up in the proper form as 'Martin Luther King, Jr.' - 'Jr. Martin Luther King' looks a bit silly.

I would think that would be the best answer. This is one case where I doubt that we will ever get enough of the books entered in a way that makes them go to separate pages with the current system.

163, 164, 167 & 168> Thanks for your replies!
jjwilson61, I tried reorganizing Martin Luther King, Jr. on 8/4, in response to post #128 and before I saw lorax's post #131 and subsequent posts; EveleenM's suggestion seemed quite reasonable & logical, like it might actually work. But, as noted, I was stymied by photos, which I couldn't figure out how to migrate. I never really got to recombining as "MKL Jr," just undoing the separations I had already done. (Harrummph!) And then it took me a while (3 days!) to report the failed attempt. If nothing else, the effort may underscore leaving well enough alone; and, for that, your perspectives are encouraging, particularly if we're approaching consensus -- a rare commodity for Americans, even without involving the Kings! (;D)
skittles, I'll plan to work on an authors combining/separating/problems thread, if somebody else doesn't beat me to it (I'll race you!); if there's no such thread already, we could use one. I like your proposal to request all related pages to be dealt with, not just links to search pages with names. Unfortunately, I can't (shouldn't) take time to do it until next week. (You get a head start!)
EveleenM, re: your observation that "Removing it {'Jr.'} would remove the sticking point of Daddy King being wrongly attributed to 'Jr.'," would that cause all the MLKs to show up on a sinlge Author page, or could Daddy King still be separate? If the former, I (personally) would prefer leaving 'Jr.' in the Canonical Name, if only as a flag that that's what it should be. But, then again, distinguishing same/similar-named authors is a particular bee in my side & thorn in my bonnet! (To turn phrases ... .)
As for "It seems to be impossible to get the name to show up in the proper form as 'Martin Luther King, Jr.' - 'Jr. Martin Luther King' looks a bit silly," I agree 1,000%; I stop there only so somebody can one-up me. But the "flipping-Jr." problem (see brightcopy's post #117 above, re: formatting CNs & http://www.librarything.com/topic/96101) seems to be in LT's coding. I've long since ceded that expertise to others; but, while messing with MLK Jr., I found/confirmed that editing & saving his CN -- without changing anything (i.e., it stayed "King, Martin Luther, Jr.," just as Tim first entered it) -- pushed "Jr." to the end, where it belongs, at least for a little while. "III Martin Luther King ('Marty')" looks silly too; I mean the name on LT, not the person. (Still, I wish Marty and his siblings could get along; I'll say that much ... .)
Are we agreed then to apply the "Shakespeare Rule" to MLK? That seems to be where we are, absent further discussion/dissension. Please let me know if you disagree, and thanks again. Now, back to what I should have already been doing instead. (But LT is so much more fun!) Happy Saturday.
Edited to attempt a Touchstone on MLK Jr.; can't make that work either ... .

Help!
In looking at the page for Janet M. Perry, it is actually for 4 different authors.
http://www.librarything.com/author/perryjanet
I think a canonical name caused the problem here since she is the only one who uses the intial. Looking at the combine works, the predominant form of name is Janet Perry so why doesn't removing the canonical name allow the names to separate? (I did that then put it back when it made no difference.)
This is my disambiguation notice.
#1 Perry, Janet M. writes on needlework (LC 2009020320) CK is for this author
#2 Perry, Janet, 1960- , children's author (LC 98018241)
#3 Perry, Janet H. (Janet Hunter) writes about Spanish literature (LC 86827579)
#4 Perry, Janet, 1947- counsellor, sex therapist (LC 93027836)
#3 also has her own page
http://www.librarything.com/author/perryjaneth&norefer=1
And #1 is an LT author so there is a link.
Could someone who knows more about authors look at this and figure out how to fix it?

As the name Janet Perry is used by more than one author this name cannot be combined with any other variation of the name, therefore I separated out the name Janet M. Perry from the page with the Janet Perry works and reset the canonical author name to match that on the address URL.
Unfortunately this means that temporarily the works by the LibraryThing author Janet Perry are split between two pages, but maybe the fact this is happening with the books of LibraryThing author will provide some incentive for Tim to get around to fixing the problem, so I wouldn't worry too much about this happening.
I've left the disambiguation notice as is for the time being. Nice work at providing the information.
ETA: I sent a note to Amazon.com to update the author information on Bargello Revisited to the name Janet M. Perry (the name on the cover).

I thought I could do it myself, but I can't... The author simply named Barclay (http://www.librarything.com/author/barclay) has two books listed that are actually by Suzanne Barclay (http://www.librarything.com/author/barclaysuzanne), but no matter what I try, these just won't show up on Suzanne's page. And I can't just combine Barclay into Suzanne Barclay either, because there are other books listed which are not Suzanne's. I split the author named Barclay, and assigned the two books by Suzanne to Barclay (1), and the others to Barclay (unknown), because I really don't know who they are by. But now I'm at a loss... Help anyone?

>176 candamyr:
In my opinion, what you did is probably the best solution at the moment. Adding more editions with a complete author name would change the LT-calculated work author... one way to accomplish this to ask Amazon.com to correct their entry (that's probably where most "Barclay" editions come from") so that newly added books will have the correct author. But it won't change the LT work right away!

OK, here's a tough one (I thought): "Masquerade" (http://www.librarything.com/work/1224592) by Serena Richards (other name for Susan Carroll) was in Germany published as "Die Masken der Liebe" (http://www.librarything.com/work/9657663) under yet another one of her names, Susan Coppula (http://www.librarything.com/author/coppulasusan&norefer=2)... How can they be combined since they appear on two different author pages...
And since we're at it, Susan Carroll's (http://www.librarything.com/author/carrollsusan&all=1) works are sc***d up anyway...
1. "Die Lady im Park" (http://www.librarything.com/work/537835) is the German title of this work and in the list on the author page it should show up as "The Wooing of Miss Masters"
2. "Das Liebesduell" (http://www.librarything.com/work/293646) is also just the German title and should show up instead as "The Sugar Rose"
3. "Die Lady im Park" (http://www.librarything.com/work/3880186) has for one the wrong title listed, it should be "Lady Jenny" for this German edition, and second, again this is just the German title, not the original title, which is "Shades of Winter"
4. "Der falsche Lord" (http://www.librarything.com/work/425599) is once more a German title listed as the original title for "The Lady Who Hated Shakespeare"
5. "Der Racheengel" (http://www.librarything.com/work/9657665) is another German title, the original title is "Avenging Angel", which can't even be found on LT...
Also I'm pretty sure that she didn't write books about the size of a Brachiosaurus, Gorgeous Paper Gifts, Scuba Diving, Real-World Math or Student Innovations On Hindu Philosophical and Cultural Traditions...

Okay, there are a few problems there:
1. The German names are showing up because there are two canonical names, but the German name should only be entered on the German site. I'll fix that in a few minutes.
2. The author page needs to be split - that will take a bit longer since I'll try and track down some information about the other Susan Carrolls.
3. I'll combine the Masquerade works.

I discovered that Scott Gideon, an author who worked on the Battletech RPG back in the 80's has a number of his works under a Last name only account of Gideon. Can anything be done for these:

It would be the ones listed under Gideon (1), not the bible works.
I removed the Scott Gideon author record out of Evil Spammer just for reference.

#184: I'm going to try to fix spider & wolf
edited to add that caching seems a little slow this morning.
edited again: caching is catching up, but I've got more fiddling to do before I combine all the spider & wolf works.
edited to add (just after 12:20 EDT) I've combined & separated. I've added extra copies via a 'sock puppet' account I use for this stuff. I've edited authors. Amazon is where the gideon only name comes from & that's what is messing up the author ship. I can get spider & wolf to show on both author pages... but gideon is still the main author of record. caching & time may fix it, but I'm not sure.
If I had the additional patience, I would add manual copies with Scott Gideon as the author, but I'm patienced out.

Thanks so much for the work on Janet Perry. Would it be a good idea for me to copy all the CK to Janet M. but leave in the plain Janet until things sort itself out? The plain page will still have the 2 Janets and I guess the Janet H. What happens to the official LT author emblem which should move to the Janet M. page?
Also would it be a good idea to put in a notice on Janet H. saying that one of her books is on the plain Janet page?

The plain page will still have the 2 Janets and I guess the Janet H. What happens to the official LT author emblem which should move to the Janet M. page?
Also would it be a good idea to put in a notice on Janet H. saying that one of her books is on the plain Janet page?

>185 skittles: I saw earlier that you were trying. You have my thanks.
There has to be an easier way to do this.
edit: I'm half tempted to dump the bibles listed and just combine the authors.

#187: simply put, there isn't.
If you want to contact amazon.com & let them know that there copy has an incomplete author name, that would be best. Give them the page/ISBN and how the author should be correctly listed. (PM me if you do so I can remove the stray copies from my extra account.)
There's a chance that the cache will clear part of it up, but I'm not going to hold my breath. I think manual adding of the book might do it.

You could enter it yourself and put the author in in your catalogue if you wanted.

even if I don't own the book?

You can also add books that you've read to LibraryThing. It depends what you want to do with it.
Even if you have no connection to the book, you could still add it and assign to a collection that you create (you could call it Errata, forCorrections, or whatever works for you). It will show if you select All Collections on the Your Books page, but you won't see it in the Your Library collection.

Could someone combine these:

http://www.librarything.com/work/280380
and

I have problem with this:
http://www.librarything.com/work/3642134
I corrected the authors name because this was published in finland under the name of Alexandre Dumas.
It's in fact german sequel to count of monte cristo and it keeps popping back under Dumas no matter what I do.
it should be combined with this:

sorry guys but I still need your help. I added to my collection (Errata, forCorrections, or whatever) this book http://www.librarything.com/work/10272330/book/63257116 and we still have http://www.librarything.com/work/2294752/ on the other side with no author. Now what, are you going to merge them?

Fixed. I was actually Time Traveling at the time. I started #28 as well in about 10 days or so. :)
