- Sir Terence David John Pratchett (28 April 1948 – 12 March 2015) was an English humorist, satirist, and author of fantasy novels, especially comical works. He is best known for his Discworld series of 41 novels.
Pratchett's first novel, The Carpet People, was published in 1971. The first Discworld novel, The Colour of Magic, was published in 1983, after which Pratchett wrote an average of two books a year. His 2011 Discworld novel Snuff became the third-fastest-selling hardback adult-readership novel since records began in the UK, selling 55,000 copies in the first three days. The final Discworld novel, The Shepherd's Crown, was published in August 2015, five months after his death.
Pratchett, with more than 85 million books sold worldwide in 37 languages, was the UK's best-selling author of the 1990s. He was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1998 and was knighted for services to literature in the 2009 New Year Honours. In 2001 he won the annual Carnegie Medal for The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents, the first Discworld book marketed for children. He received the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement in 2010.
In December 2007, Pratchett announced that he had been diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's disease. He later made a substantial public donation to the Alzheimer's Research Trust, filmed a television programme chronicling his experiences with the condition for the BBC, and became a patron for Alzheimer's Research UK. Pratchett died on 12 March 2015, aged 66. - Cause of death

Hogfather was one I deliberately saved for Christmas, and it turned out to be a great choice. The story follows Death as he steps in to impersonate the Hogfather, while Susan investigates some increasingly odd happenings connected to belief itself. I listened to the audiobook, and despite only having read one other Discworld novel set later in the series, this worked very comfortably as an entry point.
I enjoyed it more than the other Discworld book I’ve read. That might be because of the show more festive framing, the particular cast of characters, or simply that I paid more attention to the audiobook this time. I did find that the first 80% landed better for me than the ending, though that may say more about my own distractions during the final “how it all comes together” section than about the book itself.
What I really appreciated was how Pratchett plays with the idea of belief, especially the distinctions between child and adult thinking, and how belief functions differently depending on role and responsibility. Susan is a particularly likeable protagonist, and her interactions with her employer, the “monsters”, her grandfather, and everyone else were consistently entertaining and sharp.
I also loved the way Pratchett leans on recognisably human experiences to anchor the absurd. Touches like the Cheer Fairy, the very specific “oh god” of a hangover, and the ongoing fun with Hex all felt clever without being heavy-handed. It’s that ability to draw you in with something immediately familiar before gently skewering it that really shines here.
Overall, this was a joyful seasonal read and has definitely nudged me toward looking forward to more Discworld books already sitting on my to-read list. show less

Everything comes around in the end. The idea that gods are created by belief is a common one that's used elsewhere (the plane of Theros, in Magic: the Gathering lore, operates on this system, and American Gods, by He Who We Shall Not Name Any Longer, was my proper introduction to it), but I think it's best done here.
A lot of this book's philosophy on gods and divinities seems to have made it into my own mindset before I even read the book. I don't personally pass judgment on their existence show more or non-existence, but their most realistic power is always the effect that belief in them has on people; whether the belief creates the god or the god creates the belief is irrelevant. The sad reality is that, stemming from this, the true power of the god is intrinsically linked to the power of their church, even though that is an edifice built by man and not by the god Eventually, the church *becomes* the god, above the original meaning of the religion. The consequences: Vorbis, Harry Powell, and the Westboro Baptist Church.
My personal opinion? I don't tether myself to any religion, or any way of thinking, if I can avoid it. I take what I judge to be of value and leave the rest; I appreciate the value of religion in others, but swear that everything is best in moderation, and worship in particular is best consumed intelligently, lest it become a cult. And, most importantly, THIS IS NOT A GAME. Life is life; live it while you can, and deal with what comes after... well, after.
That's exactly what this book tells us, in Terry's classic way. Absolutely five stars. show less

Reaper Man: A Satirical Discworld Fantasy About Death's Existential Crisis and Chaos by Terry Pratchett
This is one of my favorites. It has so many delightful characters: Death of course, and Miss Flitworth, and Reg Shoe, and the working-class vampire couple, and Mrs. Cake.... Windle Poons' post-death journey of self-discovery, and the fact that the characters all succeed by being kind to each other and bonding over their differences, are so heartwarming a way that is very typical of Pratchett. On top of that, the fact that Pratchett manages to work in a critique of the inhumanity of modern show more corporate culture through the intrusion of a modern mall into a fantasy world is just brilliant. show less
