John Hoyer Updike (March 18, 1932 – January 27, 20091) was an American novelist, poet, short story writer, art critic, and literary critic.

Updike's most famous work is his Rabbit series (the novels Rabbit, Run; Rabbit Redux; Rabbit Is Rich; Rabbit At Rest; and the novella "Rabbit Remembered") which chronicled the life of Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom over the course of several decades, from young adulthood to his death. Both Rabbit Is Rich (1981) and Rabbit At Rest (1990) received the Pulitzer Prize. He is one of only three authors (the others being Booth Tarkington and William Faulkner) to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction more than once.

Thanks for the reminder. I did have a feeling that I had used that name before -- AND that it was a long time ago. (Iʻm not e even a great fan of Lawrence, but I do admire him as a translator of the Odyssey.) We commonly do re-use entries, provided it was long ago. Turns out it was only about 7 months.

I think it has to be the last name unless the person has none--which does not ordinarily exist for 20th century authors (maybe Colette would qualify as not having a last name which she used.

This game started July 10, 2010 and here are the rules as stated at that time:

New Game:

We start this game with an author, surname
begining with a letter, "a" and complete a cycle of 26 authors or writers (from "a" to "z" for their surnames )
- a cycle of 26 postings per round.

These authors have lived up to 31st December,1999 or still living today.

Authors: Fiction/Non-Fiction writers, poets, playwrights, screenplay writers, illustrators and anyone in the book business.

State the year, the writer was born, and passed away (when applicable) or still living today.

(You will note, RRHowell, it does say "surname")
(The way the rules have been applied the author has to have lived and published a book in the 20th century, so I think an author who has not had a book published in the 20th century--even though he has lived in that century-- is not eligilbe. I add the day, month, place of birth, and the place of death if I can find it, since it makes the entry much more informative, IMHO.
