The First Annual Egg Hunt has ended! Below are clues, linked to their solutions. Click the "Egg #" labeled headers to see the page the clue points to.
Egg 1
Coiled metal;
To jump;
A water source;
And a thematic tag.
Egg 2
You and I, together
Eggsactly here, when one looks
You, a perfect ovoid,
I, who once raised chooks
Egg 3
An English Potter, but not the Quidditch one
Once wrote about a bunny in battle fierce.
With carrots and lettuce free under the sun
And a Farmer MacGregor his ego to pierce.
Madcap stories of a vegetable thief
—Liberator or vagrant?
Well, that’s all in your beliefs.
Egg 4
"Spring's pages are written in Mayflowers,"
Said the heroine who lived near the Lake of Shining Waters.
For 110 years she’s been collecting bowers
on the pages of this book we love to read our daughters.
Egg 5
No eggs hidden on this page—
Here they’re the star of the show.
When looking for subjects on LibraryThing,
This is where you’d go.
Egg 6
In your easter bonnet,
with all the frills upon it,
You'll be the grandest lady
in the ADAPTER ERASE
Egg 7
Fire born hodad horde.

Sam Vimes, put to the test.
Lilac upon his chest.
Addressing a crowd,
The Duke he allowed
That he wanted an egg for his ‘fast.

Egg 11
Fiver forsaw the warren's destruction
Humans encroached with new construction
The rabbits must establish a brand new home
Over the English countryside they were forced to roam
Hazel took on the leadership role
As the group of adventurers reached their goal
The story of the rabbits that had to flee
Was made into a movie, then adapted for TV
Egg 12
This black bird sings all month long,
The promise of new books sweetens its song.
It won’t hatch on Sunday,
But take a gander on Monday,
To help your TBR pile along.
Egg 13
An apple a day won’t keep this Doctor away,
And his cooking skills might make you squeamish:
Served with a fox or in a box,
Won’t make you a fan of this dish.
Egg 14
"Yer a wizard!"
But too young to play this game.
The egg will sing some hinted things,
But not under duress of flame.
Egg 15
Vegetables of egg #18 beware!
This lagomorph might give you quite a scare.
A little spooky and often funny,
This book stars a garlic-averse bunny.
Egg 16
Which came first, the tag or the egg?
Egg 17
Gods are loved the world wide over
In spring, ones of bunnies, resurrection, and clover.
This well-known book examines Gods old and new
In one young country with some reconciling to do.
New bleeding edge Gods, like media and tech
Old ones who’ve written their last check.
For teen’s first read, Eoster is intense,
A fertility goddess and incense.
Egg 18
Rooting around on the site
Should “turnip” this food—
Savored by bunnies
And horses alike!
Egg 19
A Nursery Crime,
Set in modern times.
In a mystery that’s all cracked up,
Murder is a dish best served
Sunny-side up.
Egg 20

And your calm has scrammed
enroll in a program
Called “Baby I am”
And go and tag a _____
Egg 21
Old children’s books had more disease
Trying to explain to small minds with ease
The effects of fever on old and small.
This tale of one rabbit loved to Real
Surely has intergenerational appeal
As a toy who has given it all.
Finally, like how childhood ends
The rabbit makes other friends
And is no longer a doll.
Egg 22
Sometimes the world changes on a book
Whole cultures shifting on a literary hook.
This 1960’s lyrical screed
Against the chemicals plants don’t need
Precipitated several large scale turns
Of government and environmental concerns.

Super fun! I've gotten all of them except 5, 7, and 20.

>4 amanda4242: Fast work! Let us know if you need hints. I suspect you'll probably figure those out in short order, too. :)

Eighteen eggs found so far, but now I am in a land of more pondering for 2, 6, 7, and 20.
7amanda4242
>6 shadrach_anki: For 6 the last two words of the clue are an anagram for the answer

Halfway through with 11...
9amanda4242
Stuck on 7 and 20. Any hints?

The egg counter is not working on iPad. It's showing all the eggs. Not just the ones found so far! Has anyone else noticed this?
It does say how many eggs I've found. But I expected the number of eggs to reflect this also. Am I mistaken?

Two left to find. Will have to work on this more later. One is hard and the other is probably way easier than I'm making it.
21Maddz
19 for me, stuck on 12, 13 & 14. I think I know where 12 is, but it’s not triggering when I go to the page. I’ll have another look tomorrow.

Okay, that's all 22. Only needed to ask the librarian Fiance for help with two.
I feel real stupid about a few that it took so long to find, but I still did it.

I need a bit of help with how to decipher the clues. I get a word or a phrase from some of the clues, but should I be getting a book title instead? If I search by that phrase, I get a whole list of books to work through.
I did get a book title for clue 3, but it didn’t net me an egg :0/

You do need to be sure to visit the work page for clues where the solution is a title, rather than an individual book page. Work pages represent all editions/copies of an item on LT, and have URLs that look like this: https://www.librarything.com/work/3206242/. I managed to find 19. I'll look for the others tomorrow.
I have to say, though: Several of the answers are so very American, in that they almost presume an American childhood: non-USians will have a harder time figuring those out. (I'm thinking especially of numbers 4, 7, 15, 21).
Edit: and number 13, too.Dr. Seuss isn't really a thing where I'm from.

Got 16 on my own so far. Will keep working before I check the spoiler hints.
ETA gotten 4 more on my own on the second go-around. Still working on 2, 6, 7, and 12.
And figured out that my first thought on 6 was correct and the thing that puzzled me was an anagram .
All but 12 now. I was looking at publishers, but so far no luck.

(I don't know that I heard of the Discworld one, but that one I just had to click down the list of books with Sam Vimes in them until it came up.)
61humouress
>32 humouress: >35 lorannen: So these are the answers I've come up with so far. Still no eggs, though. I've looked under the titles on the work pages and as tags.
1. Spring 3. Peter Rabbit 4. Anne of Green Gables 5. eggs 6. Easter parade 8. chocolate 9. a Discworld book, possibly Guards! Guards! 10. Easter Island 11. Watership Down 13. Dr Seuss (I peeked at one of the other posts) 14. HP and the Goblet of Fire 15. Bunnicula? 16. chicken 18. carrots 19. Humpty Dumpty 20. lamb?
ETA: and by 'work page' I assume you mean click on the 'work details' link in the menu bar on the left?

Got them all now (after peeking at the spoilers). I have to agree that a US childhood does seem to help with these Treasure Hunts - over in the UK, the answer to 4 is not at all known (I was thinking of a completely different author) but the first book in that series is, and the author of 13 did not feature in my or my sister’s childhood (he’s now known and loved as her kids had the collection).
63Peace2
>61 humouress: If you refresh the clue page - does it show you as having any of the eggs? As I think at least five of those if you had clicked on titles would have given an egg - because it sounds like what I did (assuming you used the full title for #3 and #14 - but I think that should have given you #4, #11 and #15.
For 13 you actually need to find a book that references a specific food by said author - so you're on the right lines - I can be more specific in that if you need
For 9 you're on the right lines but it's not that one - it's part of that sub series of Discworld books though
For 19 Again the right character - but you're looking for a modern 'adult' book (as in not a children's book) which has that character's death in it another clue to help focusing on Nursery Crime might help
For 13
For 9
For 19
64Peace2
I'm only missing #8, #18 and #20 - I've got this feeling I'm going to be face-palming when I do work 8 and 18 out. 20 seems to be completely beyond me.

No recourse to spoilers so far and doing well but I am really struggling with number 17. Any clues?
71humouress
>63 Peace2: Thanks for the help.
I tried refreshing the clue page, but it's still not showing any eggs. (I'm using Safari on both my iPad and iMac.) and I keep going back to check the clues, anyway so I'd expect them to pop up if I found any. I haven't seen any banners either. :0(
I'm enjoying the puzzles, just frustrated that I'm not getting the eggs. If I manage to get one, I'll probably work out what I'm not doing right and then I should be able to find some more. On with the hunt.

I got #9 by process of elimination, but I don't *get* #9, meaning why is that the answer? It's not obvious to me other than the character connection, but then I haven't read the Discworld books . Would someone just explain it?
119PhaedraB
I got 16 on my own then used your clues for the rest. What really helped was the hint for plurals . #7 messed me up because I checked Thor Heyerdahl's author page and when the egg wasn't there, I thought I was on the wrong track. But I must confess, even after getting the answer for #7, I still can't parse the clue.
121lilithcat
This is so weird.
#5 was driving me round the bend. I clicked on the correct page I don't know how many times with no luck. Just tried again and got the egg.

Nor I. What the heck is a "hodad" when it's at home? And what on earth does "kowabunga" have to do with anything? None of that clue makes any sense.

Thanks for all the clues, everyone. I've found all 22 easter eggs now that #20 finally clicked for me. "Baby I am" -- it's a baby animal associated with Easter . No idea what that has to do with tagging, though, but that was the final one.
#7, well, I too went down a Stan Lee hole, followed by a TMNT hole. A clue here led me to google a certain combination of terms that finally made me open the right LT page.
For those who still need a clue concerning #7:You're likely familiar with the name of someone who sailed to #10. Start there. One of his books has a super-relevant title.

Up to 16 eggs. Some I got right off, a few I had an idea that wasn't working so had to check the clues. Since I'm off work tonight, I can do more hunting later. Even if I don't get the rest in the next 13 hours, I have my night off Wednesday to hunt.

This was a lot of fun!
It's also interesting to read the US/UK childhood commentary as someone whose first language isn't English at all. I knew many of the children's books included by name (both US and UK based) but have never read them so it felt like stumbling in the dark for a bit. #4, on the other hand, was one of the first ones I solved. It was immediately obvious to me which author it referred to, it was only a matter of clicking on the correct title (as the quote is actually from a title further along the series - at least according to Ecosia, I haven't read them all).
#20 took me the longest and funnily enough I got it through the Dutch tips here! :D I always find rhyming clues and jokes a bit challenging, as there are so many different accents/ways to pronounce English words (and they so rarely "seem" to be rhyming until you read them aloud).
Like >65 EMS_24: I too thought that the word would be repeated in the title (and actually found one somewhat fitting candidate). For #20 I also tried to search for another food that rhymes and ended up with Lovecraft and manga...
Always a good time adventuring around LT!

I’m absolutely new here today, and its morning here, but I am not yet familiar on how to maneuver around the site. The egg hunt looks like fun but I’m not getting past the first clue, simply because I don’t know how or whether I search site pages for the “thematic tag” or pick a random topic tag and search book lists to make it fit the other clues? Where am I is an easier question for me right now. I may have to come back after a coffee or three to get a clue! Can you help me understand how to get on the right page?
I’m glad to say that my coffee has kicked in finally and I have made it to 5 eggs so far. Still not sure about the process but will keep going.

LibraryThing newbie here, too! I managed to get 21 so far, and I have an idea that my last open one, #12, might be a publisher (there are four with bird icons that I'm aware of -- Penguin, Puffin, W.W. Phew! This was fun and also challenging. I might have ripped out some of my hairs … Thirteen riddles I got by my own (#17 was the most easy one and I loved it!), for the rest - especially those connected to US/UK childhood books – I had to check on the other members clues. It took me forever to finally find the solution as nothing seemed to make sense. xD

For those who don't see the pop-up even when they're on the correct page, I had the same problem the first time I did one of the hunts, going back to the hunt page and finding I had gone to the correct page without realizing it.
The pop-up is not one that will cover any of part of the page. It's a thin notification bar right across the top edge of the page just under the header, about the same color and width as the bars above talk posts. I looked right past it any number of times because my attention was on the data on the page, not the top bar. But once I saw it, now I see it!

I've tried Operations like Click and Search, then Tag...and still am clueless.
This is my first Treasure Hunt and am surprised to be so close to completion at 19!

On #7, Yeah, he is. I was laughing at myself because I've been to the museum in Norway that shows what he's done, and it even had the island stuff, but I had no idea he wrote things.

Even with the clues given here - I can't figure out #17. Help please?
242WeeTurtle
On #17, the clue really has more information than you need, I think. It's distracting. I got it more on instinct as it reminded me of a book I've already encountered.
Focus on lines 4, 5, & 6. It's fiction.

>231 lilithcat: Yes please. Pirate hunts were nice not religious "holiday" hunts, and I mean, "SantaThing" sounds far cuter than HolidayThing would, but, let's not make all kinds of religious (particularly just one religion) stuff on LT, yeah?

And I've been reading John le Carre: "Our Game" these days and came across farmer MacGregor which I only noticed because of the egg hunt!
252divinenanny
>250 .Monkey.: Also a good reason to do more hunts! I mean, with our international community, there's bound to be a holiday everyday we can use. Also, more things in different categories (other than spring-easter and winter-christmas) to find.

I don't see celebrating Christmas and Easter as religious myself, and as far as I can tell I'm in good company. After all, point to the bible passage that references '..and the Easter Bunny came down the path and bestowed colourful eggs to all her children.', or '...and all those who had been naughty that year received none.'. As far as I am aware, both of these celebrations predate the Christian era, and are concerned with marking agricultural points in the year (Okay, minus the Santa part - as >250 .Monkey.: mentions; but certainly the feast itself is to do with paring down the livestock for the winter months and eating meat when crops were scarce. And Easter marks the spring when the earth comes back to life - hence eggs and chicks, and rabbits as a fertility symbol I would guess). So, pretty down to earth stuff that relates to every man, woman and child on the planet (almost). Unfortunate that the 'true' meaning of Christmas time has been lost (yes the irony is on purpose). Personally, I'd much rather see a spooky Halloween ghost hunt! :D

257.Monkey.
I mean, that's great for you and all, but a great many people do see them as very important religious holidays. Obviously any individual is free to celebrate them however they see fit, or not, and attribute any meaning they want to them, or none. But it doesn't change what they are. And what they are is christian holidays. How is it possibly starting some sort of war to do silly little hunts using different religious & non-religious themes? How is it any less so by only using one religion's days?
I am most definitely in favor of dumping any religious themes and keeping with those that are less exclusionary, like pirates and ghosts, "pi day" etc. But if religion is going to be on the cards, it should certainly not be a single religion.

>257 .Monkey.: You are both correct of course. I think the point I was trying to make was that (no disrespect) Christianity absorbed a lot of existing celebrations in to itself, renaming and theming them as Christian - one of the reasons for it's fast growth in fact. But people have been celebrating Christmas and Easter under different names long before that. If that faith had never come into practice, people would still be celebrating the feasts because they transcend belief and are based on physical manifestations of our planets natural cycle. The same can not be said of many important religious observations.
As I see it, it is unfortunate that these feasts have been labelled as 'Christian'. But, I wouldn't go so far as renaming them. Call it Christmas, or the Winter solstice. Call it Easter, or Spring Equinox. It is the coming together of the family and friends and the season of good will that is important.
But, I think we are hijacking this thread. ;)

Oh, I would love to do a future hunt themed around 'National Woman's Day' or 'Black History Month' or 'Labor Day'.
I'm under the impression that Easter and Christmas are a bit unique in that there are acknowledged secular celebrations for them (eggs and candy, Santa and, um, cookies). I think that unique aspect lends them well to having fun clues developed, that feature, broadly, cute things like 'the title of a book that features a bunny' or 'remember when that one character held up an egg that one time?' Personally, I'd have a really hard time thinking of solutions to clues that had a religious element (regardless of religion).

Random comment, but if we're aiming to be globally aware, even thinking of Easter as a "spring" holiday assumes a certain northern hemispheric orientation, right? Because in the southern hemisphere, spring marks when things come back to life...around September through December, I think?
Also, I love hunts and especially adore the idea of a ghostly one.

But people have been celebrating Christmas and Easter under different names long before that.
People have been celebrating mid-winter and early-spring festivals for a very long time, that's true. Christmas and Easter may have absorbed some aspects of how northern Europeans celebrated those, but that doesn't mean Christmas and (especially) Easter aren't religious holidays with meanings for those who celebrate them that differ from the seasonal aspects. Christmas in the US is fairly secularized, but Easter isn't to nearly the same extent.

Just popping in to say I hear you all on the religious holiday feedback. While the timing and springtime-y theme is certainly auspicious, we aimed pretty carefully to steer clear of overtly religious clues/pages/themes. If nothing else, by virtue of being the small staff that we are located in (mostly) one country, we've certainly got blind spots, and we don't want to leave anyone feeling left out (or potentially offended). Your points are well taken, and I'm making note of all suggestions for other non-religious treasure hunt ideas—I love the ghost idea in particular. If anyone has feedback on the matter they'd rather not share publicly, my inbox is always open (loranne@librarything.com).

I too would certainly like to see more treasure hunts. I think all types of foci would be great - religious, secular, pagan, historical, geographic, anthropological, sociological, whatever.
The hunts we’ve had have taught me about many things beyond the mere mechanics of finding and invoking a tags page. I had to google “afikoman” when I ran into it in these comments - fascinating - and I remember in an earlier hunt learning a lot about a religion that some pirates followed in Roman times. These hunts and tidbits from other worlds of viewpoints are what make the hunts so much fun. More, please!

At this point people are talking about a lot of stuff. As a raised-Christian atheist I didn't find the hunt at all overtly Christian, since it is, as you say, a "spring" egg hunt. Easter itself, though, is another matter.

The 1001 list is fun, but certainly not anything to take seriously. If that sort of thing were to be a theme, though, there's lists made by other places available online as opposed to in a book you're intended to buy (though you can find the list itself online various places so it's not like you're really obligated to buy it even if interested in the titles on it), one of those could serve just fine for the theme. Hell even Gutenberg has a list of like the top downloaded titles from there.

I got most of them myself, but needed help with numbers 2, 6, 7, 14, and 20. The funny thing is that I knew every book mentioned, though I don't think I've read _any_ of them. No, I have read at least one Bunnicula book.
2 was a face-palm - needed the hint and then remembered thetitle
6 I understood completely (singing it in my head), and then spent forever searching for anagrams... bah.
7 I only got because of hints -I had no idea what a hodad was before I read >14 btuckertx:, and still don't know what the bomb line is about. But the Easter Island statues are made of volcanic rock (thus fire-born), and I know Thor - though trying to remember his last name was a pain!
14 I figured wasHarry Potter - the "yer" was a hint for me . But I haven't read any but the first, and I just had to go down the list.
20 I got totally stuck onham , and it wasn't until >130 Petroglyph:'s spoiler that I figured it out. Bah again.
Lots of fun, as usual!
I do celebrate both Easter and Christmas - but the religious and secular aspects are quite separate in my head. There is a Lenten link to all the eggs, but you have to think about it - and there's no reason for colored eggs there. So eggs and candy and rabbits have nothing to do with the Resurrection, as Santa and presents and reindeer and so on have nothing to do with the Birth. I hadn't realized how separate they were for me until I read this thread.
I can see the point about separating it further, though, or using (the secular sides of) other religion's holidays too. Egg hunt - maybe Spring hunt? Which (as someone pointed out) will only confuse those in the Southern hemisphere... And I hate to say it, but Halloween is also a Christian religious holiday (All Hallows Eve or All Saints Eve) - it's just not a very important one, so the secular aspect has taken over completely. Christianity has thoroughly infected modern Western culture, perhaps even more so for non-Christians who don't recognize off-hand where some things are coming from.
Don't care. Hunts are fun, themed hunts are fun, we can come up with some good ones without linking it to a religious thing. And the more hunts there are, the less the ones with any sort of religious link stand out.

I regret that this thread has turned into a should we have " religious holidays or not." I don't think there is a way where you can't offend someone . Really this is just an egg hunt.
For me in Canada, what is Arbor Day? We don't celebrate it in Canada. I take it is something to do with trees.
I don't think you can hold a hunt without someone getting their girdle in a knot about something. There are Christian's, non - Christians, - every kind of people here on LT. I'm fine with a Halloween Hunt, but by the same token, I know Christians who think Halloween is evil and do not celebrate it.
Or take what is" Remembrance Day" in Canada,. There are pacifists who disagree with it, and others who regard it as sacred .
Or Pirate's Day. No problem to me, but perhaps those have been badly affected by pirates as a refugees might be offended. My point is really, it's just a hunt for eggs for fun. Participate or not, as one sees fit.

Thanks for the fun egg hunt! And thanks for the helpful clues. I was able to get 16 on my own but I’m a bit of a completest so I liked finding them all.
Hopefully we’ll have more of these - no matter what they’re called or the occasion.

Thanks for all the clue help. I managed to get 19 of 22 without assistance, but needed clues for 3 of them. And one title I'd never heard of, so most of the clues didn't even help. But, in the end, 22 of 22. That was fun!
331Heather19
*groans* 20 out of 22 found now. Some of these seemed so much easier then the normal Pirate Day clues, but a few are totally stumping me. Took me an embarassingly long time to figure out #5. All I have left are #6 and #22... With #6 I saw somewhere in this thread that the last two words are an anagram, so I actually put them into an online anagram maker.... Still can't figure it out.
edit: The religion talk in this thread is interesting.... I would've never seen any sort of religious leaning with this Egg Hunt. In fact the only place 'easter' is even mentioned in connection to this hunt is clue #6, and it's just talking about a bonnet. I get that some people see something that takes place on a religious holiday and immediately think of religious connections, but it doesn't always have to be about that. Egg hunts (or present giving in December, or whatever) can happen completely separate of any religion. (I do totally love the idea of more hunts on more holidays though!)

I find these hunts very Americo-centric in terms of which books are assumed to be "well-known classics"; this is particularly true with children's books. These make them a lot of fun, but quite challenging.
The problem with genre-themed hunts is that they would feel like that all the way through, for those who are not aficionados of the genre in question.
I understand why LT chose the themes that they did: those public holidays are known of, if not necessarily celebrated in most countries. But if this is thought to be problematic, how about making a virtue of particularity and using themes that ARE relevant to particular nations only?
I'd never heard of Arbor Day before, until it was mentioned above; it's interesting to learn about things like that. Then I invite you to "Remember the 5th November" (Guy Fawkes' Night -UK). Then how about Maslenitsa (Slavic) and the Dragon Boat Festival (China)...

Yeah, no. That "clue" works if you already know the answer. From "fire-born" to "volcanic rock" is a pretty large leap to make unmotivated, and the rest of the riddle offers nothing to narrow it down to that pathway. And a horde of hodads (i.e. wannabe surfers) is supposed to lead me to "island people"? Come on! Expecting a large, international group of people to people to make both leaps successfully is unreasonable.

I didn't catch "hodad" as slang at all, so I assumed it was some fantasy race, and then went right to Norse Thor from there - it's not like there's any shortage of books that reference Norse myth.
(And then someone said ___ Dahl and I was like "Oh, did I forget that Dahl wrote a book with Thor in it?")
Even after clues made me realize what hodad was, I associate that style of slang really specifically with Southern California, so it *still* got me nowhere!
It looks like nobody's figured out the "bomb" part though (unless that's also surfer slang? It means "really great wave", right? does it just mean the statues are looking toward the sea?)
Did they just write a basic description of Easter Island and translate it into surfer slang? The thing is, I still don't get the surfer connection - is Thor Heyerdahl part of surfer culture somehow? Or are we just supposed to go surfers=Polynesia?

The one I didn't get the reference for was for Anne of Green Gables. I found it by googling the Lake of Shining Waters (or similar), but for the life of me I can't think what connection it has to Easter.
Admittedly, what I managed to read of it was a while ago and I loathed the series, which I realize is practically sacrilege for some people.
It's funny because I enjoy the genre actually, but I swear the main character had Narcissistic Personality Disorder or something along those lines. She really bugged me.
Also felt like we were told she had skills but never really saw her working at them or got a sense of her effort to improve herself. Just, oh she's so talented. But then NPD kind of works that way so...
I always only hear praise for the series, so I wonder if anyone else ever noticed that?

Talk Like a Pirate Day seemed to work out well. Pirates are a popular theme, so maybe something along those lines. Dinosaurs, or Aliens spring to mind as something a lot of people find interesting in various ways.
I agree it's a good idea to keep the hunts to something more special, but I guess if there were more of them, one wouldn't necessarily have to participate in every one.
Something around other countries celebrations would be interesting and informative. Perhaps something a little different every year? It could get hard to find understandable connections after a while if a theme went on for too long. And the challenge of something new would keep it fresh and introduce new books, so more educational!

...that's the book we're talking about, right?
When Matthew Cuthbert reached Bright River there was no sign of any train; he thought he was too early, so he tied his horse in the yard of the small Bright River hotel and went over to the station house. The long platform was almost deserted; the only living creature in sight being a dragon who was coiled on a pile of shingles at the extreme end. Matthew sidled past as quickly as possible without looking at the dragon. He was unaccustomed to dragons and not able to tell the males from the females, but if he had known she was female, he would have sidled even faster. She was coiled there waiting for something or somebody and, since waiting was the only thing to do just then, she sat and waited with all her might and main; which, being a dragon, was a quite dramatic amount.
Matthew encountered the stationmaster locking up the ticket office preparatory to going home for supper, and asked him if the five-thirty train would soon be along.
"The five-thirty train has been in and gone half an hour ago," answered that brisk official. "But there was a passenger dropped off for you—a young dragon. She's sitting out there on the shingles. I asked her if she'd like to go into the stables, but she informed me gravely that she preferred to stay outside. 'There was more scope for imagination,' she said, but I rather think she meant there was more room for her wings. She's a case, I should say."
"I'm not expecting a dragon," said Matthew blankly. "It's a boy I've come for. He should be here. Mrs. Alexander Spencer was to bring him over from Nova Scotia for me."
The stationmaster whistled.
"Guess there's some mistake," he said. "Mrs. Spencer came off the train with that dragon and gave her into my charge. Said you and your sister were adopting her from an asylum and that you would be along for her presently. That's all I know about it—and I haven't got any boy orphans concealed hereabouts."
...that's the book we're talking about, right?

>410 jjmcgaffey: I was never interested in fossils or dinosaurs as a kid. Surprisingly, neither were my two sons. But I did know Bunnicula and stuff like Goosebumps and Dr Seuss and Harry Potter via reading with my now adult sons :-) and I even knew who Thor Heyerdahl was! Ack! :-) lol

Anne the Green Dragon sounds like the type of story that could easily suck me right in if I'm not careful. I once made the same mistake by picking up that Seth Grahame-Smith book which sent me down the Jane Austen rabbit hole for a while.

We dinosaurs (aka old people) missed the surge in dinosaur culture.
Way back when I was in school, when Pluto was a planet and the USSR existed, we had pterodactyls, brontosaurus, T-Rex, and that thing with dinner plates on its back. Now there are so many more that I can't keep track!
Maybe my son or grandson could help me, we had a book about trilobites once...

Love the idea of a Fossil Hunt! A virtual prospecting trip would be so much fun, and there are children's books, novels, scientific and historical works - something for everyone.

Let me tell you, as someone with a five-year-old, that dinosaurs are SO MUCH COOLER than they were 30 years ago. Tons of them had feathers. Lots of carnivores were fast - no tail-dragging here. Brontosaurus wasn't a thing for a while, but now it is again. The longest claws on any animal ever known belong to an herbivore, or at least a mostly-herbivore.
Oh, and you'll probably see one if you go out in the yard. Modern birds are more closely related to T. rex than T. rex is to Triceratops - so if "dinosaur" is meaningful at all, it has to include modern birds.

I love the title Fossil Hunt! Great thinking. And although I honestly wasn't all that into dinosaurs when I was younger I know a ton of people who were and are. I've always thought dragons were much cooler. (Though that argues the question of whether they would be included.) How about a Dragon Hunt? There are probably enough books about those alone to warrant a separate hunt and they may rival dinosaurs in popularity.
That Anne the Green Dragon book does sound very interesting. I like the style. Glad to know I'm not the only one not a fan of Green Gables.
"Completest Personality Disorder"
Love it!
Glad to know I'm not the only one too, guess I'm in the right place. ^_^
It's why I mentioned it though. Some of us actually need to hear it to remember it is an option, though whether we can follow through is another thing entirely.
Ah, Jane Austen, another favorite author. The next Shakespeare IMHO. Any interested parties might try the Stephanie Barron Jane Austen Mystery series. Lots of historical details, a believable representation of Our Author as Heroine, and fun stories all round.
Also recommend Sarah J. Waldock if you like the JA spin offs. (Personally I think it is fascinating that fanfiction has become an actual lucrative genre for JA.) Anyway, her works are more for Emma sequels and an interesting series following the brother of Fanny from Mansfield Park in his somewhat Horatio Hornblower style adventures. At least, I think she published those also. I know her personally though so I may be biased, but I like her dry sense of humor. Suits JA; I think she'd approve.
Children's books might be a genre option for a hunt, but it is a bit too broad perhaps. Maybe a Children's/sub-genre hunt.
Looking forward to getting my badge when the PTB are able to get around to it! I do the hunts partly just for those little goodies. =P

Well, if you want a grown-up Anne the Green Dragon book try Jo Walton's Tooth and Claw...
424Marissa_Doyle
>423 Maddz: I always thought that book was more Anthony Trollope with dragons. ;)
425Maddz
>424 Marissa_Doyle: Oh yes, it is and Jo Walton admits that. But it’s the same sort of conceit - take a well-known book, and replace the characters with dragons.

How about something that isn't a treasure hunt, which is along the lines we've been pursuing, but instead a clue search? (Can't think of a better way to put it. But the game Clue is fun, so maybe something like that without the mystery quotient. Or with...)
I think that Food is an excellent topic everyone can relate to. Maybe International Cuisine, or Food Fiction. Something for the cookbook fans even. Could be very educational. There are some fascinating books written on the history of food, even outside of the popular diet trend stuff. But I'm betting everyone has a favorite, or can think of a book that features food as a strong part of the narrative. Psst, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory doesn't count (but only because it is obvious.) International Cuisine could lead to books that either feature recipes, history, or other topics related to cuisines of the world. Or a combination. Just some more thoughts on fun topics.

When will the winners be announced?

The golden egg is a literary reference, so I don't see them changing that.
And I'm sure there are no icon sized egg shapes that are colored gold. Doubt they are going to waste time trying to colorize a badge when they are still trying to finish the whole downtime debacle.
Geez.

I'm sure that if people who are disgruntled that the icon color doesn't match the description, staff can remove their badges, just as soon as they finish all the rest of the site improvements that have been requested.
Sheesh.

The badges were handed out on the 20th. At least that's when I got mine. What does it say for you on this page, https://www.librarything.com/egghunt2018.php?

Fabergé egg? Yes, please!
The eggs seem to be coming through slowly. One of my sons' accounts has got an egg, but not the other, yet.

Does anyone who found exactly one egg have the badge?
Is anyone who found more than one egg missing the badge?
I wonder if it's as simple as someone using a "greater than" when they should have used "greater than or equal to" in the query to determine who should get the badge.

This was a thoroughly egg-cellent thread to come back to after being out last week. I'm sorry I didn't get winners announced prior to my departure—as some of you might be aware, things were a little hectic!
I'm pleased now to announce (finally) our egg-ceptional winners! This hunt wasn't eggs-actly over-easy, and these folks all found at least 15 eggs! Congratulations to (in no particular order):
alieceey
pfeaster
LadyBookHermit
TempleCat
Narilka
karenb

LibraryPerilous
Maudee

Stats coming shortly! And I'm checking on the missing badge issue—need to circle up with Tim about that.

Those people were not the only ones who found all the eggs. Congratulations to them for being selected for the prizes, for sure, but it's very misleading to imply that they're the only ones who found 15 or more.

>457 lorax: I'm sorry, that certainly wasn't what I meant. I thought it was pretty clear from the original post that anyone who found 15 eggs or more would be entered into a drawing for one of our 10 prizes. These are the prize-winners!
In any case, I'm waiting for Tim to get me some stats on total participants, how many found 15 or more, etc. Hope to have those shortly!

It was very clear from the original post, yes. That was a month and 450 posts ago. People who don't remember the details could clearly have assumed from your post that the prize-winners were the *only* ones to find 15 eggs. At any rate, I'm looking forward to the stats, and congratulations to the lucky randomly-selected winners!
