Description | (Stephen) Grover Cleveland (1837-1908): 22nd and 24th President of the United States. Democrat. Main political experience before becoming President was as Governor of New York. He was elected president in 1884 in large part because of doubts about the integrity of Republican candidate James G. Blaine. Running for re-election in 1888, Cleveland won the popular vote but lost the electoral vote to Benjamin Harrison. In 1892, he ran again and regained the Presidency, becoming the only President to serve two discontinuous terms. His second term coincided with the Panic of 1893, which allowed Cleveland to largely do away with silver currency. |
