- Explanations
- aulsmith: A tour-de-force of speculative fiction, but I suspect folks with no background in Plato or Socratics might be a bit lost.

- Explanations
- Awfki: I was really surprised he was able to wrap this up in a reasonable way. The book is typically Scalzi, fast paced, humorous (if you like snark and sarcasm) and generally a light read. My main complaint with this series is that the aliens don't feel at all alien. They speak with the same snark and sarcasm as the humans and that just feels off. It's still a fun read, just don't take it too seriously Also, I hesitate to call a popcorn read the "best" SF/F novel of the year. If a popcorn read is the best year had to offer it seems like it must have been a pretty off year.tottman: Another great entry in the series. Well-written characters, thoughtful politics and plotting.

- Explanations
- Awfki: It feels very fresh and original. It's a blend of elements strung together in new and interesting ways and a well told story with likable characters and a dash of humor. Butcher is obviously the servant of several cats because knows exactly what is going on in their evil little heads. Also, this is a much, MUCH better selection for him than the puppy-slated Dresden novel of last year. The Dresden stuff is good but it got old for me after book four or five. This is a totally different feel and much better than than any of the Dresden novels.

- mathgirl40: Not my favourite of Wilson's books, but well-written with good character development and interesting ideas. More speculative fiction than science fiction.
