We can count our lucky stars that in 2017 we met our goal so I thought maybe we should continue to strive to overcome the tasks to clear our shelves. The theme this year will be the 12 signs of the Zodiac! Everyone seems to have embraced the star system, so I thought shooting for the stars would be a fun theme! Ticker password is ROOTS.
The ticker thread https://www.librarything.com/topic/278507) will hopefully fill up with pledges of books to be read in 2018! Remember please no discussion, just tickers!!
This month's goal is 351

Love the theme, Chèli, and many thanks forsetting this up again!

Thanks for setting up the group, Cheli! I'll sort out my tickers and thread later (if not tonight then at the weekend).

A perfect theme, thanks Cheli! Good luck everyone, I'll bet we have another great year in 2018!

I am pledging 35, low I know, but scary too. Never made a commitment to read my own tomes before.
13majkia

You are just one book below me, Kristel. Nice to see you here. Welcome to the ROOters.

I rather fell off most of the talk in 2017- hope for more communication in 2018. Will be moderate and hope for 25 ROOTs -

I'm in for another year of reading ROOTs. I will join the group as soon as LT lets me. My computer keeps telling me there is a "fatal error" when I click the "join the group" button. I will set up a thread and ticker soon. I hope to keep up with the threads and my fellow ROOTers better than I did in 2017.
18Familyhistorian
Hooray, LT is back online.

The last two years I have been reading a lot. In November 2016 I started to read through my childrens/YA books alphabeticly, to decide what I would keep and what to cull. Now there are 352 books to go and I hope to read them in the next two years.
In 2017 I have read 238 ROOTS, of those 172 were from my childrens/YA collection and I culled 61 of them.
I have set my goal for 2018 at 200 ROOTS.

To go along with the Zodiac theme, I'm toying with the idea of reading a book from my shelves by an author who was born under the Zodiac sign for the month.
There's a great website that lists many authors by month/birthdate here:
http://librarybooklists.org/literarybirths/index.htm
Just looking at these lists and what's on my shelves, I know I've got books on the TBR written by these Capricorns:
Rebecca West
Wilkie Collins
Haruki Murakami
Ernest Gaines
Anne Bronte
Anton Chekhov
Now if only I can keep it up for a whole year....

Sue Grafton, A Is for Alibi / B Is for Burglar / C Is for Corpse (reread)
I read the early "Kinsey Milhone Alphabet Mysteries" ages ago but I only ever completed the first half-dozen or so. I've had five omnibus editions, each of three mysteries – all told, A through O – around the house for ages and I've gotten or am in the process of getting the later volumes (P through Y along with Kinsey and Me) and doing a complete "Kinsey Milhone" marathon in honor of Sue Grafton's death on December 28.
Anyway, 1st for January, 1/75

I will pledge to read 50 ROOTS this year. I surprised myself last year in reaching my goal of 47, so I am going to up my number this year.
With that in mind, I finished my first ROOT on the trip back from my Christmas break with family. Hour I First Believed by Wally Lamb. There was a reason why I had been putting this one off. It was 20 CD's and it could have been edited to half that with little loss from the novel. The last 5 CD's were the most interesting. I kept listening to it, because back, when it was published it has such favorable reviews and so many people just loved it that I wanted to find out what it was. Unfortunately, for me, it just never kicked into high gear. But it is now off my shelves.
I set up my ROOT thread for this year. Here is the link. https://www.librarything.com/topic/280191
It is also on the Group Thread listing.

Wonderful to see the gang rally around our Fearless Leader and Inspirer for another year of good reading and reducing. I never was a dieter, and I'm beginning to see that ROOTing is a lot like dieting! This will require much self-discipline of which not a bone in my body is inclined toward.
Yet, in a spirit of unlimited optimism (it's easy to be optimistic, just not disciplined) I have started my thread.
**sigh**
Haven't picked my first ROOT. So many good books on my shelves that I waver in indecision. Must persist!

>78 CurrerBell: Yes, it was very silly but gave it some (in my view much-needed) levity! I've got a couple of the other books in the series, and will look up the others, although I suspect by book 7 it might be wearing a bit thin!

oh the Eyre Affair what great fun. I read it before I had read Jane Eyre and so I am sure that I missed at least half of the literary puns in the novel.
I have read three of the books in this series and read the two Nursery Crimes books as well and laughed my way through all of them. Good stuff for people who read.

The series follows the books quite well. However, like all dramas it emphasizes some events and people more than the book does because authors can describe some things while theatrical production can't do that. Somebody has to either act the thing or say the thing. I have no complaints about the novels and the show meshing and think the producers, director, and writers are doing a good job.

I finished another ROOT today. I listened to the sound recording of the YA fantasy novel Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor and loved it! This is a great fantasy novel and one I will be recommending.
Even though the novel was released last year, I had been waiting to read it and had entered it into LT as soon as I learned its publication date. That was a year ago, so it has been on my TBR shelf for a year. That makes it a ROOT!

127Kristelh
I've completed 5 ROOTS this year. Good start on this goal. I might have to amend the goal if I reach it too soon. Is that okay?
128cyderry
>127 Kristelh: You can change your goal at any time.

Thanks >128 cyderry: and >129 connie53:.

I finished my 4th ROOT last night - An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir. Of course I forgot to write down my ticker password, and have already forgotten it... so it looks like I'll be making a new one. I'm going to blame it on pregnancy brain... but really I just have a terrible memory!
139cyderry
>138 johanna414: If you make a new Ticker, please just replace the one on the ticker thread, not a new message. All you need to do is edit that message and paste the new ticker in the message and erase the old one, PLEASE!

Finished my fifth ROOT for the month for 5/55. I hope to keep on track and maybe get in a few more ROOTs before the end of the month.
143Kristelh
>140 floremolla:, I recently read What I Loved. What did you think of it?
144floremolla
>143 Kristelh: it was a 5* read for me - I liked the setting, and the characters, and the way it slowly transformed from love story to a sort of psychological thriller - there were so many references on art and philosophy and books, I'd like to read it again!
I looked at your review - your point about Leo and loss is particularly well observed. The book covered such a lot of ground I found it difficult to capture in my review* in a few paragraphs.
*on my thread - I've never got round to proper LT reviews!

Well, everybody, I think that I've welcomed you all to this year's challenge and gotten the tally list ready for the end of the month. I did notice that a few people have not officially joined the group and that some have not added a ticker to the ticker thread.
LibraryThing shows that we have 101 members in the group but I only have 83 tickers. For the new members of the group, the ticker thread helps me to calculate our progress so that we can reach our goals by the end of the year. If I need to visit each individual thread to gather the numbers, time is flying by before you all know where we stand. I would appreciate it if anyone who has not added a ticker to the ticker thread would consider doing so. If you need help, just ask but there is a thread which gives instructions (thanks connie53!) If you already have a ticker in your personal thread, you only need to copy the html to the ticker thread. Updating one spot, updates them both.
I will not include anyone's goals and totals if they are not officially a member of the group. It's too confusing to keep track.
Lastly, there are members who have not set a goal. Is intentional or just an oversight?
Please check the updated list of pledges to see if your name is there. If it isn't, you either have no goal that I have seen or are not an official member.
Let's start the new year off with as few problems as possible so that we can concentrate on ROOTs!!

I am sorry, but I made a mistake. I actually signed up for 50 ROOTs this year. I had 47 last year and I looked at my thread for last year - 2017 - instead of 2018. It is 50 for 2018.
I did so well last year that I went over my goal. I hope that I can do that well this year - otherwise I will contribute to a deficit instead of being on the asset side of the column.

I finished reading Death at La Fenice by Donna Leon earlier this week. I thought this was a re-read, but as I got about 50 pages into the novel I realized that I confused it with another novel I had read years ago. Since I had it entered into my LT database back when I first joined LT I figured that qualified that title as a ROOT.
This novel is the first in the Guido Brunetti series and in order to read it I had to do an Inter-Library Loan request for it. It turns out that not many libraries have copies of this first novel so this one came all the way from a library in Massachusetts.

>160 fuzzi: I love Heyer's books!
I have finished another paperback and hope to finish one more Kindle book before the end of the month. I have done well reading my own tomes but I also succumbed to the lure of my Christmas gift card to Amazon and got lots of new books this month (twice as many as I read!).

A belated Happy New Year to everyone. Thank you to Chèli for keeping everything on track here!
Although posted elsewhere, my ROOTing goal is (only) 12 books this year, but maybe I will exceed it.

I have finished 6 ROOTs so far, don't know yet if I can finish one more Wilkie Collins. My own ticker is updated, didn't touch the group ticker.

I listened to another ROOT and so can remove that title off of my TBR list. Physik by Angie Sage is book three in the Septimus Heap series for children. The narrator for this series is wonderful and it makes listening to these novels a real experience. This one had to come to me through ILL and it was quite a thing to find a library that would loan out a recorded book to ILL. But they did, so now I have knocked it off my TBR pile.

I added one more ROOT for the month so now sit at 6/55. I wonder if that will get me more than one star?

I don't think I'll fit in any more ROOTS in this month so here is my report for January 2018:
UpROOTED books: 5
ROOTless books: 0
Added to the TBR shelves: 3
The ROOTs were:
Three Stones Make a Wall by Eric Cline
From Solon to Socrates by Victor Ehrenberg
The Lathe of Heaven by Ursula K. Le Guin
The Brief History of the Dead by Kevin Brockmeier
The Fire Gospel by Michel Faber
ROOTs in YTD: 5
Tickers have been updated but hopefully not harmed in the making of this report.

I've added #7 for January to all tickers. Another abandoned book this time, so it feels like a bit of a cheat, but it's off the TBR list so there we are, it's included!

I finished one last ROOT for January and it was a humdinger wonderful book. For the first time in months I sat down yesterday and read because I couldn't put the book down. An American Insurrection: The Battle of Oxford, Mississippi, 1962 by William Doyle was an amazing eye-opener and simply un-put-downable. This book is going on my personal Best-Reads list of 2018. It is a five star read.
American Insurrection was published back in 2001 and I don't know why I waited so long to read it. It is an excellent example of narrative non-fiction. The book is about the desegregation of the University of Mississippi by James Merideth in the fall semester of 1962. It is also about the total ineptitude of the Kennedy Administration in handling this affair. It points out that the American North had no idea of the Southern mindset and opposition to the concept of desegregation and what form of civil disobedience that opposition would take. As a result they were totally unprepared for what happened the night of September 30, 1962 and federalized the National Guard much to late to do anything very effective and ended up sending a 30,000 man force of the U. S. Army to restore order to the university and the town. The author goes so far as to call this event an invasion and the last battle of the American Civil War. He provides evidence that this is not just hyperbole.
I was shocked by what I read in the book, coming as it did on the heels of the racist events at the University of Alabama two weeks ago. (I work at UA) I admit that I was doubtful of the credentials of the author of this book, so I enlisted the help of another librarian in researching the author. He is legit and so is this book. It is no wonder that 50 years after the integration of the big Southern Universities that there is still racism rampant on these campuses.

I had a very good month of ROOTing in January. I signed up to read 50 books off of my shelves in 2018 and this month I knocked off 6. That makes my totals 6/50 and I have 44 to read in 2018. No tickers updated.
