a delicious amalgam of new york nuggets .. i purchased it at time it was released, most immediately, for e.b. white's 1949 essay "here is new york" . .. which begins
"On any person who desires such queer prizes, New York will bestow the gift of loneliness and the gift of privacy ... It can destroy an individual or it can fulfill him, depending a good deal on luck. No one should come to New York to live unless he is willing to be lucky."

Phillip Lopate is the author of more than a dozen books, including three personal essay collections, Bachelorhood, Against Joie de Vivre, and Portrait of My Body; and Waterfront. He directs the graduate nonfiction program at Columbia University and lives in Brooklyn with his wife and daughter.
